Also, this seems to be an indication that there's going to be a REVENGE variant of Vader

The fact that he's in the SDCC mega-pack is a pretty good sign too.  :P

Silly me.

All in all it's a slightly underwhelming first look.  I'm sure we'll see some more in a few hours.

Security for the SDCC floor is relatively tight, and exhibitor badges are the only thing that will get you on the floor before Preview Night kicks off.  Those are tough to come by.  I managed to get one for SDCC coverage a couple of years ago and wound up pretty surprised by just how much I was able to photograph before the crowds came in for Preview Night.  I am very surprised to see that Superherohype was able to get in THIS early.  But unless we see a SW fan site get in early I think we won't see anything appreciable until about 8-10 PM ET tonight.

SDCC in person really is something impressive, and seeing it firsthand is the only way to completely grasp just how massive of an event it's become.  Almost all of the exhibitor booths are being built and setup right until the moment the doors open.  And word has been filtering in that some people already started lining up outside the convention center as early as Monday.

I also continue to be astounded by the fact that they're still managing to stay in San Diego.  When I went in 2009 I heard that there were an estimated 200,000 people in town for Comic Con.  It's a great city and I would definitely visit there some time other than Comic Con.  But the Con seems to be outgrowing the facility.  There's been talk of moving to another city, but San Diego seems committed to expanding to meet the growth of Comic Con.  LA seems to be contending for the Con, since so many movies are being promoted at the show.  But only Las Vegas may  have a big enough convention center and accomodations to host the show.

I think we might have to wait for some better images to determine that.  As for the set, I wonder if they've re-done the cockpit in the Vader TIE?

Also, this seems to be an indication that there's going to be a REVENGE variant of Vader

Does R2 look like the battle damaged one from the first Droidfactory 2 packs to anyone else???

The R2 from the shot of the figures on the top shelf?  I got the feeling that those might be the figures from the DVD 4-packs.

Stephen Dillane seems to have been cast as Stannis Baratheon for season 2.  HBO viewers may recall him in his role as Thomas Jefferson in the John Adams mini-series.

I had thought about Kang when I saw Thor, and the whole Cosmic Cube storyline got brought to light.  Who knows?

Also, I was just checking out the Comic Con program grid, and surprisingly the major upcoming comic films don't seem to be listed, Avengers included.  You've got to think that there will be SOME kind of Avengers panel.  Especially since most of the cast was part of a presentation last year.

I get the feeling that the theatrical re-release of TPM in 3-D would be a bigger marketing push than anything else.  We did see some new packaging samples after all.  But then, producer Rick McCallum did express some open concerns that if TPM in 3D doesn't perform well in the theaters, that could jeopardize the release of the other movies.

We've seen the BluRay DVD 4-packs that are coming up soon.  They're okay but nothing special.  And truth be told, there are SO MANY titles that are being reissed on BluRay that a big marketing push that includes a toy line might be more than collectors can bare.  It seems like Vintage is at least going to run through the end of this year, and I think the relaunch is going to come at Toy Fair next year for the TPM 3D release.

As for the current status of the line?  There have been changes within the Hasbro Star Wars team that might account for some of what we're seeing on the retail end.  Plus a lot of Hasbro's marketing is focused on other properties:  Marvel movies, Transformers, etc.  We might see a more concerted push for SW when the Clone Wars returns to TV in the fall.

IIRC, isn't there a REVENGE version of Luke (Endor Capture)?

I think Gambon did quite a good job as Dumbledore.  Richard Harris was a great actor, but he never really got much of a chance to sink his teeth into some of the more complex parts of Dumbledore's story.  The closest we even came to that was in the flashback scenes in the second film, and those were quite brief.

I made a point of checking out the movie today.  I was very surprised to see that Ciaran Hinds was cast as Aberforth Dumbledore!  Lots of emotional moments in this final chapter.  And it was fairly true to the book.  The final scene seemed a tiny bit off.  Perhaps I had a difficult time picturing the characters at that point in their lives.  All in all, a very good way to bring the series to a close.

It looks like the first teaser (which appears after the credits of Cap) has leaked online.  It is very poor quality, but if you'd like to see it, it is probably wise to do it quickly:

Avengers Teaser

A lot of the "quick flashes" type of stuff going on, and I look forward to seeing it in better quality (or on the big screen), but man it is exciting that this big team up movie is happening.

Already pulled from YouTube.

I was SERIOUSLY tempted to pick up the new book today.  Instead, I opted to pick up a paperback multi-pack of the first 4 novels.  I'm about 400 pages through A CLASH OF KINGS, and I'm going to start A STORM OF SWORDS as soon as I'm done with the second book.  Plus, I'm probably going to go back and read the first book since I only have the HBO series as a reference.

It is pretty silly after all this time.  The prop coat was on display at Celebration 4 in LA, and it was pretty clear that it was brown.  But people hang onto the nostalgia of the Kenner vintage figure with the blue coat and they superimpose that onto their memories of the movie.

Shadows of the Dark Side / Re: 2011 TRU Force Unleashed Box Set

Hasbro's lineup for this box set (and to a lesser extent the RC set) makes it much more transparent that they're trying to keep costs down by repainting existing sculpts.  To that I give a loud and clear "BOOOOOOO!"  Especially since they're re-offering the EVO and Jump troopers AGAIN.  Why not reissue the Shadow Guard if you're going in that direction?  That figure was easily one of the more scarce offerings of the past 5 years.

They are, however, clearly trying to appeal to the video game generation of Star Wars fans.  I think that's an important direction for Hasbro to turn to in an effort to stay relavent.  But the fact that Hasbro has effectively done NOTHING for TFU II shows that they haven't been able to work effectively with LucasArts to market a line of video game based figures.  Is it Hasbro's reaction to getting burned by LucasArts because of the inordinate delays on the original Force Unleashed game, and the resulting delays for the figures they developed for that game?  Possibly.  Video games have been notorious for release delays.  But you would think that with a multi-million dollar licensing deal such as Hasbro has with Lucasfilm that SOMEHOW they would be able to work out the kinks on a release schedule for video game figures.

Saw this earlier today at the otheR site.  It looks like the following lineup:

-Starkiller (cloaked)
-Darth Phobos
-EVO Trooper
-Jump Trooper
-Trooper TBD

I hope this time around Starkiller will actually look like Sam Witwer.

Great news!  Peter Dinklage has been amazing in his role as Tyrion.  He certainly has one of the most interesting character arcs of the series.  Lena Headey has also been pretty remarkable as Cersei.  I had to do a double-take when I first found that she was the same actress who played the Queen in 300.

I've been re-watching the series these past few days on HBO On Demand, and it's remarkable just how much detail has been worked into the entire series.  Perhaps it seems like it's getting a little more depth since I've started reading the novels and I notice that much more.

Looking forward to season 2, I have to wonder how the showrunners will handle some things.  Will we get a name actor as Stannis Baratheon, for starters?

And in related news, Brienne has been cast.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Could Droid Factory Survive....
« on: July 14, 2011, 03:58 PM »
In the Star Wars universe I think this idea was best suited to the droids.  There was the whole Droid Factory concept from the vintage days that Hasbro was able to resurrect but in the Build-A-Figure format that had become popular with other licenses.

Marvel Legends made the Build-A-Figure concept really popular, but in their case I think it worked because of HOW they did it.  Marvel Legends focused on a couple of different avenues:  characters that were far too big to fit on an individual card; or characters who might not sell well on their own, but the chase of putting together a Build-A-Figure enhanced the appeal of those characters.

So what types of characters in the SW universe would this concept work with?  Again, droids worked well.  Parts were interchangeable, and there's some history to the droid factory concept.  But what other kinds of characters would work?

Troopers - I think the heyday of most Republic & Imperial troopers has passed.  Between the current Saga Legends and Vintage Collections I think the collector market has become inundated with these guys.  The only way I think I might find this concept appealing is if there was removable / interchangeable armor for these characters.

Large Characters - This was a focus of other build-a-figure programs, but what to address?  Most large characters have been addressed in some form:  Ephant Mon, Hermi Odle, Jabba the Hutt, Wampa, etc.  And other creatures might be just too big to take on in this format.

So what do I think COULD be an appealing avenue?  EU characters.  Some of them have been tough sells to the broader audience that buys Star Wars figures.  But if you add the chase factor of trying to track down parts for a build-a-figure, you may start to drive the market to try to buy figures in order to complete that build-a-figure.
