The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Clone Wars Slave I?
« on: April 5, 2010, 11:37 PM »
The new trailer is definitely very cool.  If you haven't seen it yet, check it out.

That being said, I don't think a tricked out Slave I would or should go for $100.  With Hasbro the price point has always been related to the size of the box.  And I cannot see a revamped Slave I needing to ship in a box that would fit something like the AT-TE or the Turbo Tank.

If there are plans for upsizing Slave I?  I could see Hasbro shipping it in a box that's roughly the same size as a Republic Gunship.  That seems much more appropriate for Slave I given the way that Hasbro has scaled vehicles to the figures.  And given Hasbro's recognition of how pricing and economic pressures have hurt collectors as well as their own bottom line, I could see them trying to offer a medium/large vehicle at a more attractive price...provided it has mass appeal.  The involvment of a young bounty hunter in the Clone Wars might be the foothold Hasbro needs to do this.

The AOTC poll results were not terribly inspiring as far as character choices go.  I think there are definitely some more visually interesting characters from Episode II that have fallen by the wayside.  And the poll didn't feature anywhere near enough Jedi.  Especially since the arena battle is the single biggest gathering of Jedi in the entire Saga.

I thought that was called "The Bus That Was In Desperate Need Of A Brake Job", but who knows?!?!  All of these new fangled movies...who can keep up with them?

Who could forget that classic, Space Truckers?   ::)

Dennis Hopper has definitely had his share of stinkers.  But there are also some true classics.

Apocalypse Now

Easy Rider

True Romance

Blue Velvet

With a film legacy like that Dennis Hopper is always going to be with us.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Antique Finish Detail

I have a bad feeling about this....

Antique Force Detail Collection = April Fools Day Collection?

NICE!  You've gotta love spinning fanboys into a tizzy.  Given the state of things over at the RS forums, good on Curto for messing with that mob.  It'll get plenty of the know-it-alls over there a chance to whine, because they just LOVE to whine for the sake of whining.  For something to "mysteriously" show up in their photo database without any kind of front page news, SOMEONE should have known better.  And the way so many people in the fanboy community take things WAY too seriously? It makes this even better!  Although they really need to develop something of a sense of humor.  As for me?  I enjoyed the joke immensely!

I caved today and bought some of the Iron Man 2 figures.  I'm going to stick to movie figures mostly.  Today's acquisitions?

MOVIE SERIES
-Mark 4 armor
-Mark 5 armor
-Mark 6 armor (lightup)
-Iron Monger
-War Machine

I'll probably pick up the Mk 1 & Mk 2 armor, too.  And I couldn't resist one of the concept armors.  So I picked up the Hyper Velocity armor, too.

Tonight's episode had all of the elements of a WWII era submarine movie.  Which for me was a very interesting turn.  It's great to see how the series has visited a number of genres.  Last week it seemed to be a film noir/Peter Lorre kind of deal.

There's plenty for me to do.  I've been biding my time on a bunch of things.

-At least one wave or more of Clone Wars basic figures
-Some of the Deluxe figures w/ vehicles
-Both TFU multipacks
-The last wave of comic 2-packs
-The online exclusive comic 2-pack
-The EU wave
-The Shadow ARC-170 (bargain hunting)
-The Crumb Bomber Republic Gunship

NFL changes overtime format for playoff games
Team winning coin toss must score touchdown to win in sudden death

Honestly, I'm not liking it.  I think it should either be sudden death (any scoring method) or a full OT quarter.  Anything else seems like a compromise.  And this thing the NFL chose makes it look almost as ridiculous as OT in college football.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Drop in Collector Interest/Figures?
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:37 PM »
My threshold was $6.99.  $7.50-$7.99 was my breaking point where I had to make more severe cuts, and to be totally honest I was cutting back at $6.99 in the duplicates department, so I just made that more severe when the price went up yet again.

Isn't that funny, how as little as .50 per figure can sway one so easily from going overboard with purchases?

I think my tipping point was after SAGA2 ended, I seem to recall the price on those was $6.63 at Wal-Mart - when Legacy hit the next year, the price was $7.46 or something close to that.  That's when it hit me that enough was enough on the overbuying.

I think the price increases in non-movie years are PART of the problem, but not the sole problem.  Look at the other economic factors that are affecting people (jobs, higher fuel costs, general economic pressures) and I think you'll see a number of reasons why people felt the need to either cut back or drop out.

R Lee Ermey actually did a piece on his show Lock 'N Load about John Basilone and the M1917 machine gun.  And in that demonstration they showed that it was possible (albeit difficult) for a Marine to fire that weapon from the hip.  Video Here

All of the Marines in the series appear to be from the 1st Marine Division, albeit from different regiments.  But it's clear that the notable Marines in the series like Leckie, Phillips & Basilone were all involved in the Guadalcanal campaign.

There's a huge contrast between the Marines of The Pacific and the men of Easy Company in Band of Brothers.  Easy Company and the 506th PIR were constituted in the Spring of 1942.  That unit trained together and shipped to England as a unit until they were dropped into Normandy in June 1944.   The Marines on the other hand were either from existing units or men who enlisted immediately following the Pearl Harbor attacks.  The Marines landed on Guadalcanal 9 months after Pearl Harbor.  So to compare the units in terms of their time together may not be an appropriate comparison.  But I suspect that over the course of the HBO series the characters will be developed so that the viewers will be able to identify with them more.

Nick I think I am glad you brought up that you had an uncle in the ARMY in the Pacific.  They were on many of the islands that the Marines were on, but not in the numbers so they ddin't get the recognition.

I was glad to see some mention of the Army landing on Guadalcanal in last night's episode.  But it only highlighted how woefully undersupplied the Marines were, and how difficult the conditions were for them to deal with.  I haven't been able to watch the full episode yet, but the situation looked pretty grim at times.
