The Legacy Collection / Re: 2008 Evolutions Sets

Looks like that's from the ePay.  Behold Doc, everyone.  I wonder if they managed to make a helmet for her.

A very small endcap on a feature display.  And only at Toys R Us so far.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Retailers Scaling Back on Movie Lines?
« on: May 3, 2008, 10:18 PM »
It seems like they might be doing this.  I've been hitting a TRU, Target & WM on a regular basis.  And I've only seen a real presence at TRU for these lines.  Iron Man seems to be doing well in comparison.  And Speed Racer is taking up A LOT of space.

One of the real surprises was a 12' feature display at TRU.  On that one unit they had stock 5 lines:  Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Dark Knight (Batman), Indiana Jones and Narnia.  There was minimal presence from any of these lines in the regular boys toys aisle.  But the Speed Racer feature section?  It's disgusting how much space they've taken up.  Especially since that movie hasn't even been released yet.  Certainly it's got a good deal of history, but it really looks like Mattel went over the top on this.

The Legacy Collection / Re: TLC Millenium Falcon Upgrade
« on: May 2, 2008, 09:49 AM »
I get the feeling that it probably isn't.  First off, that part of the Falcon doesn't really get seen in the movies.  And secondly, that back top looks like it's structurally important to the stability of the toy.  Plus judging by the seams on the front cover, it looks like you would be able to tell whether or not that back top would come off or not pretty easily.

The Legacy Collection / Re: Fan's Choice Returns
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:34 AM »
This is definitely a cool thread.  I've really had a good time keeping up with how the Fan's Choice Polls have gone over the years.  It looks like Scott handled the most recent Toyfare poll pretty well.  I actually wrote something up for another site that chronicles the previous Fan's Choice Polls as well.  I'm just gonna quote myself on that.

Quote
Fan's Choice Figure Poll #1
The Contestants
Ellors Madak - Duros - A New Hope POLL WINNER!

Amanaman - Return Of The Jedi
Bom Vimdim - A New Hope
Eeth Koth - The Phantom Menace, Attack Of The Clones
Teemto Pagalies - The Phantom Menace

ANALYSIS - As you can see, Ellors Madak was the winner.  He was issued as part of the Power Of The Jedi line.  This was actually one of the first figures to feature a functional weapon holster.

The other contestant actually fared pretty well.  Eeth Koth was issued at the tail end of the POTJ line.  Teemto Pagalies was issued in the first SAGA line.  Amanaman actually went on the win the next Fan's Choice poll.  The only character from this poll that has yet to be produced is Bom Vimdim, from the Mos Eisley cantina.

Fan's Choice Figure Poll #2
The Contestants
Amanaman - Return Of The Jedi WINNER!

Yarael Poof - The Phantom Menace
Major Bren Derlin - The Empire Strikes Back
Admiral Ozzel - The Empire Strikes Back
Ben Quadrinaros - The Phantom Menace

ANALYSIS - The second round of the Fan's Choice Poll was very much a reactionary response to the first poll.  Rumors of hacking the first time around were rampant, especially with Amanaman having a late surge in votes.  That may have given Amanaman an edge going into this round of voting, and he came out the victor in the second poll.  However, Amanaman was a little too large for a basic figure card, and was issued as part of Power Of The Jedi's Deluxe figure line.

The other characters in this round of voting have done pretty well over time.  Out of a total of five characters in this poll, four have been produced.  Obviously there was the winner.  But going down the list you can see that Yarael Poof was part of the SAGA Screen Scene line.  Major Bren Derlin is among the newest additions to the line, having come out as part of this year's SAGA line.  Admiral Ozzel was part of the SAGA gold card line.  The only holdout at this point remains pod racer Ben Quadinaros.  However, rumors point that he may be part of this year's Battle of Naboo wave in the SAGA line.

Fan's Choice Figure Poll #3
The Contestants
Ephant Mon - Return Of The Jedi - WINNER!

General Carlist Riekkan - The Empire Strikes Back
R1-G4 - A New Hope
Twi'lek Masseuse - The Phantom Menace
Even Piell - The Phantom Menace, Attack Of The Clones

ANALYSIS - Ephant Mon came out the winner this time, although this poll was once again mired with accusations of hacking.  Votes mysteriously kept going to the Twi'lek masseuse much to the chagrin of many a fanboy.  Ephant Mon eventually came out as part of the SAGA line's basic figure assortment in 2002.  It "weighed in" as quite possibly the heaviest basic figure to ever be part of the line.  It was also probably among the most HTF figures in the SAGA line, but also in the history of the Fan's Choice Poll.  Word is that Hasbro actually took a loss on producing this figure.

But it seems that once again the Fan's Choice polls were the source of good figure ideas for Hasbro.  Once again, 4 out of 5 of the contestants have eventually gotten their figures made.  General Riekkan was immortalized in plastic for the SAGA gold line's Ultra figure assortment, being packaged with a tactical display screen.  R1-G4 came out in the SAGA gold card line as well, but in the Basic Figure assortment.  Even Piell made it into the Screen Scene assortment, being issued as part of a Jedi Council 3-pack.  The lone holdout now is the Twi'lek masseuse.

Fan's Choice Figure Poll #4
The Contestants
McQuarrie concept Stormtrooper - WINNER!

Imperial Dignitary - Return Of The Jedi
General Carlist Riekkan - The Empire Strikes Back
Captain Nym - The Battle For Naboo video game
Rebel Commando in Scout Trooper disguise - Return Of The Jedi

ANALYSIS - The Ralph McQuarrie concept Stormtrooper was the winner this time around.  His victory was a first for Star Wars figures, being the first figure to be based off concept sketches and not having appeared in the movies or TV shows.  This figure was issued as part of the SAGA line during the gold card phase.  Two variations of this figure exist, with one having the lightsaber held high, and the other with the lightsaber held low.

The other contestants this time around haven't fared as well.  Only 3 out of 5 of these contestants have been produced.  The Imperial Dignitary was in the SAGA gold card line, and General Riekkan made his second poll appearance here, but as mentioned in the previous poll's analysis, he was part of the SAGA Ultra figure line.  Captain Nym and the Rebel Commando in Scout Trooper disguise have yet to be tapped, but don't count them out yet.

Fan's Choice Figure Poll #5
The Contestants
Captain Antilles - A New Hope - CO-WINNER!

General Jan Dodonna - A New Hope - CO-WINNER!

Rabe - The Phantom Menace
Yarua - The Phantom Menace
Ben Quadrinaros - The Phantom Menace

ANALYSIS - On this occassion the voting was so close that Hasbro deemed that both Captain Antilles and General Dodonna were co-winners.  However it was only Captain Antilles that bore the Fan's Choice winner designation on the packaging.  Both of these figures were issued on the SAGA gold cards.

Yet again there are 4 out of 5 poll candidates that have been made!  The winners got made in the SAGA gold card line.  Rabe and Yarua were pretty much in the same wave, both as part of the end of the OTC line, or what some call the Post OTC line.  But don't forget about Ben Quadrinaros!  This is his second time around in the polls, but once again there are rumors that he might be coming out later this year.

It's kind of amazing that after the 5 polls, only a few of the contestant remain unmade.  Those being:

-Bom Vimdim
-Ben Quadrinaros
-Twi'lek Masseuses Ann & Tan Gella
-Captain Nym
-Rebel Commando in Scout Trooper disguise

So it definitely seems that the polls have been fertile ground for figure ideas.

Hmmm.  There's so many cool characters just from KOTOR and KOTOR II.  Here are the ones that I think are remarkable:

-Bastila
-Sith Trooper
-Jolee Bindo
-T3-M4
-Zaalbar
-Darth Sion
-Darth Traya
-Jedi Exile
-Carth Onassi
-Atton Rand
-HK-47

The Legacy Collection / Re: Defender Wishlists 2008: A New Hope
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:55 AM »
The rumors have been pretty strong regarding Commander Praji.

And while I was hoping for Davish "Pops" Krail - Gold 5 to at least place in the poll, I think I'd like to see him packed with a new Y-Wing.  My personal hopes being that Hasbro will sell that as an exclusive, and include a voice chip that keeps saying "STAY ON TARGET!"  I think that would make for the ultimate Target exclusive.  ;)

But very surprised to see that the space/zero G Stormtrooper didn't place at all.  Perhaps folks are trooped out?  Or maybe it's just too obscure of a trooper to make people take notice.

The Legacy Collection / Re: Most Wanted Vehicles
« on: April 25, 2008, 04:36 PM »
Very cool stuff Sal!  Building a scratch model has got to be one of the most impressive things one can do in modeling.  But I'm equally puzzled by the new paint scheme.

The Legacy Collection / Re: Most Wanted Vehicles
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:42 AM »
I can think of a few vehicles that could stand to be done as well as re-done.

EPISODE I
-Naboo N-1 starfighter - w/ vac metal parts, and working droid socket (which would require an R2 unit with telescoping dome)
-Trade Federation Battle Droid transport - I think this has a much greater likelihood of being made than the MTT.  The MTT is just huge, and this seems like a more attainable goal with some genuine play value.  As for getting my own MTT fix, I think that I might have to make do with tracking down the Pepsi MTT cooler.
-Gungan Bongo - This plays a  relevant enough role in TPM that it could do well with the kiddie audience

EPISODE II
-Dooku's Solar Sailor
-Republic Gunship - Carrier
-Rickshaw droid

EPISODE III
-Republic Assault Gunboat
-Yoda's Kashyyyk escape pod
-Droid Gunship
-Droid Tank
-Wookiee Catamaran
-Bail Organa's speeder
-Clone Turbo Tank
-Theta class shuttle
-Imperial V-Wing

EPISODE IV
-Imperial Landing Craft
-Rebel Hangar pilot transport

EPISODE V
-Snowspeeder - resized - The snowspeeder is really a small vehicle, and you can see the most striking contrast between the cockpit of the vintage toy (your figures swim in there) and the cramped cockpit of the vehicle in TESB.
-Twin pod cloud car

EPISODE VI
-Jabba's Sail Barge
-AT-ST - new sculpt - the scenes with Chewbacca and the Ewoks in the AT-ST really showed that the vehicle should be a twin seater.  Given the current state of the AT-AP, a more accurate AT-ST should be an attainable goal.

EXPANDED UNIVERSE
-Ebon Hawk - Why not go for one of the coolest EU ships of all time?

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: A power only one has achieved....
« on: April 20, 2008, 02:35 PM »
I think that Sidious was talking about Qui-Gon.  Yoda is able to discern that Qui-Gon has managed to maintain his identity through the Force.  And while Sidious might be a master of the Dark Side, he must be very attuned to the Force as a whole.  He might be able to detect that Qui-Gon has managed to maintain his identity in the Force.

As for him offering to help Anakin discover the secrets to immortality?  I think that's just part of the seduction.  Sidious tells Anakin what he wants to hear, even though he might not have the answers.

Hey Hasbro! / Re: TX-130 Saber class fighter tank-PLEASE!
« on: April 20, 2008, 02:17 PM »
I think that if this vehicle makes it into the new animated series, it's chances of being made climb dramatically.

8563
That would certainly make sense.  After all, the Sandtroopers attack on the Lars Homestead never happens on screen in ANH.  But we do see the whole conflict between Maul and Obi-Wan at the Homestead in Visionaries.

So what would we get for $34.99?  Well, from the comic there's Darth Maul, Obi-Wan, Owen Lars, Beru and a juvenile Luke.  I'd venture a guess that for the added cash we might get the Homestead garage dome.  And maybe a moisture vaporator, too.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Big Items of the Future!
« on: April 17, 2008, 10:24 PM »
IIRC, there was a different modern Death Star playset that was shown at a Celebration 2  collecting panel.  It was definitely different from the one shown at C3.  But I can't recall where I saw images of that one.

8565
I agree, The Complete Cross Sections is the best way to go.  It's all 4 of the original Cross Sections books rolled into one, plus the drawings for the TIE Bomber and B-Wing.  I think the entire series is a tremendous collection of work.  And the books and they offer some great insight.  The Falcon drawings alone are fantastic, and I think they might have served as some inspiration/reference for Hasbro in the design of the new Millenium Falcon.  But to simplify my thoughts on the books?  They're fun to check out.

I would definitely like to see more books in this series in the not-so-distant future.  I think the Clone Wars offers a cool opportunity for that.  Sure, we've seen most of those vehicles in the prequel books, but there are still some that might be of interest to fans of this series of reference books.

I actually had a chance to chat with Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen, the artists for these books, at Celebration 4.  They're very cool guys who have a very strong background in industrial design.  They were very much open to discussion at their art tables.  And they gave some great insight on the development of the first book during one of the panel discussions.  Apparently when the original book was in the works, it was quite a challenge for them and David West Reynolds to come to agreements about the inner workings of the starships and other vehicles.
