Watto's Junk Yard / Scavenger Hunt Contest
« on: August 13, 2003, 03:37 PM »
This is the first star wars forum I have ever seen where it's scavenger hunt trivia questions have more to do with the personal facts about it's members than Star Wars itself.

Very interesting concept, and still a little scary too.

I'm glad I didn't tell anyone my Dog's name when I was a kid. That might have been number 14.

 ;D

So, this may be a really lame answer...but it'll work.

Get a floppy disk and run the home networking setup wizard on your XP machine. Then, take that disk and make your win98 machine a client.

9 times out of 10, if you've tried everything else it's time to finally bite the bullet and run that stupid wizard.

Well, I appreciate everyone's replies to what I said, and believe it or not, I share a lot of the same views about the current state of the site over there.

The difference is....I want to try to do something to help it, rather than keep tearing it down.  Sure, I could spend my day causing trouble for the one or two mods they have left over there.....but that wouldn't really be productive.

So, I've just reporting posts like crazy, doing the best I can as a member to try and help clean it up.

My advice is if you aren't please with the place, try and be part of the solution by doing that.....not part of the problem by doing things to make it worse.

And when I called JD a "tiny site", I didn't mean it in a bad way. The fact that this place is cozy is one of the cool things about it.  It's just not really well known yet. Someday it will be, and when it gets to the point of being as big as RS or any of the others....I hope that it doesn't have to go through all this stuff too.

You should be able to download a patch from Cnet. I don't think it's linked in that article above, but here is a site with everything you need to know.

I went by RS as usual last night, just to see what was going on, and I thought that whole "demonstration" was pretty lame. Once was kinda funny, twice was overkill.

I understand that a lot of people over here have ill-will towards RS, and I understand that a lot of you have ill-will towards certain moderators over there.

My question is....why keep going back? Why turn it into "Site wars"?

It sheds a bad light on THIS site IMHO.  See it through the eyes of someone who has never been over here. They'll think JD is just some tiny site with a beef against RS, and that's not the image you guys want, is it?

You guys are all really cool over here, so why go over there and start up and post in 85 different threads just for the sake of proving a point that the site needs better moderation. I think they know that. Or at least, I hope they do.

To me, this is like seeing one of my friends stalking his ex-girlfriend. Throwing eggs at her house because they broke up, and constantly talking trash about her.....and me still being friends with her.

You guys used to call that place home, and some of us (I for one) still enjoy hanging around there. I'd even like to see it improve, and maybe if they take action it will someday. I don't want to see them crash and burn just out of spite.

Still, if you guys are going around setting fires all over the place and then shouting "BOY, this place is burning down!!" it really doesn't make you any better than the people who are making it suck in the first place.

Sorry if this comes off as a lecture, but I just thought that was kind of lame to do that twice in a week.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Kevin Smith movies
« on: August 11, 2003, 07:14 PM »

My favorite Kevin Smith movie (and possibly favorite movie of all time) is Clerks.  I worked retail as a teenager, so I really identify with it. Same with Mallrats, though I think that spoke to most of us slackers. I don't see why it got such a bad rap, it was genuinely funny.

Jay and Silent Bob is kind of a nice big inside joke for all of his fans, and a bunch of dick and fart humor for the American Pie generation.

Then there are the two more "Serious" movies, Chasing Amy and Dogma. I found Chasing Amy to be lacking in some of the qualities that make the rest of the movies great to me (junvenile humor maybe) but it's still a good flick.

Dogma.....I have to say, I don't really "get" religion, so I don't know whether this was educational, or over my head...but I liked it.

There are more movies, Check out viewaskew.com   I think it may be to your liking.

I really liked this movie too.

I really thought the produced parts at the beginning and end of the movie were great.

They are a great example of what a bunch of idiots will do with a 2 or 3 million dollar budget, whereas Tom Green sort of blew it with Freddy Got Fingered.

Just the fact that most of us even know eachother by (real) name puts us way ahead of other forums on a personal level.  Beyond that, many of us could probably tell you the names and ages of many members wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, children, pets, what kind of car they drive, what they do, where they live...  It goes on and on really.

OK, that's just scary to me. Does that mean you guys actually listen when I divulge stuff like that?   :)

plus why bother have hope for them when the better palce is the here and now?

Because as nice and friendly as this place is, there are only a handful of posts every day to look at.

I'd love to see either Rebelscum settle down, or this place liven up.....but neither one is the optimal hangout in it's current condition (unless you only like to stop by once a day.)   :)

I don't know what it's going to take over there to get someone to listen. I think sometimes it's like they HAVE to see the place literally burn to the ground before they react, and make a change or two.

However....regarding Matt's comments about this place in comparison, I would like to see what would happen if JD finally got that kind of traffic.

I mean the front page of Wattos Junk Yard has less than 10 active topics in the last 2 days....whereas over there Wuher's has 10 active topics in the last hour, and (partially thanks to Scott) probably 10 times that amount in the last two days.

What if some of the mods of this site volunteered for double duty?   :)

I'm still over there all the time (as you guys probably know) just due to the speed of responses.

I like this place a lot better, and I always think to myself it would be my first and only stop if it were only more populated......

BUT THEN I think, hey...if it was more populated, it might just turn into another 'Scum.

So....this place is my cool down joint, and that place is the mosh pit.  :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Question about Ads on this site.
« on: August 5, 2003, 02:58 PM »
Yeah...."lucky". That's the ticket.   :)

Seriously though, I did an experiment. I reloaded this page 5 times. 4 out of 5 I got the disreputable site that shall no longer be named, and on the 5th I got Cloud City Collectibles.

So maybe I'm in freaky ratio hell or something.

Watto's Junk Yard / Question about Ads on this site.
« on: August 5, 2003, 01:05 PM »
Every day I've been here this week, Bam.

Brian's Toys ads.

I'm sure they're paying a lot of money and helping to keep this site up and running, but it seems like they're getting extra heavy rotation this week or something.

This isn't to start a big debate about Brian's Toys being the scourge of the Star Wars collecting universe (although they are).

I'm just curious why they seem to be in such heavy rotation lately. Did they send a big check, or am I just unlucky to be hitting the site at the exact moment their lame ads come up?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Worst CD you Bought...And Still Own
« on: August 5, 2003, 11:29 AM »
Alice in Chains self titled CD does kind of suck, though I liked the song "Again".

 :)

Somehow, I got from BMG...the Fast and the Furious soundtrack.  I'm not sure how, or when I got it (or if I paid for it at all). For the life of me, I can't remember ordering it, but somehow...it's on my shelves.

I've listened to it once and haven't since.  I think that's actually going to replace my top choice.
