Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Casting Questions

in the gym!?
so, can you wash these out and reuse them?  (the syringes)

do you need to put vaseline all over the 1st half, even the figure you're casting, or just the silcone in the first half?

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Casting Questions

I've received my casting and molding supplies in the mail now.  I think I'm already to start!
I was wondering, can I buy some of those little plastic syringes, like the ones that come in medicine bottles sometimes or with baby medicine, and use those (1 for each part a and b) to extract the casting liquid, then put it into the cups?  That way I get equal amounts.  But if I do this, can I wash them out and reuse them?

Oh, and should I wear rubber gloves when doing the molding and casting?

Thanks!

try using a 'the corps' figure's head.  there are a few bald ugly looking guys in there.  Then add lekku

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Wax Vs. Clay

thank you very much for the input Ben!  Its certainly helping since I'm just getting into the whole casting/sculpting process.  I've been doing regular customs for a while, but havent produced much.  I just got my silicon rubber and casting plastic today from smooth-on, so I will have fun very soon!

just use a twilek girl and add a mustache.  :)

cool!!!  I started sculpting and customizing in 6" about a year ago, but only did 2 thus far.  I've since went back to 3 3/4" scale.  But MAN, those are danged awesome!  You may want to look into WWE wrestling figures too as bases.  Thats mainly where I did mine from.  You can get lots of good fodder cheap from older figures.  Weapons, now thats another issue.  Not much out there.  I used those cheapo paintbrushes as a lightsaber (the kind that come like 10 to a pack with different colors for handles) and it works very good.
Have a look (its the Naga sadow and Gorc).  of course, I'm not really sure if gorc is 3 3/4" scale or 6"!

I also found a TON of less articulated 6" army soldiers at big lots as well, for 2 bucks each.  Hope this helps a little.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Wax Vs. Clay
« on: May 24, 2006, 01:57 PM »
After viewing conceptuk's website, I was amazed at the clarity of the details in his wax work.  He claims to use 'hasbro grade' wax, so is this available to the general public somehow?

I've always used clay to sculpt my stuff, and now that I've seen his, glassman's, and ben's stuff, I'm wondering if maybe wax is the way to go.  Which brand do you guys get?  It looks great for detail work.

Is it pretty soft or what?  I am just envisioning trying to make a figure out of candle wax in my head.  Is it somewhat like that?

where does he get that 'Hasbro Grade' modeling wax from anyways?  He's got some cool wax designs on his site!

Star Wars Action Figures / MicroForce
« on: May 23, 2006, 02:31 PM »
I've got some microforce figures coming to me to customize.  When I bought these, I'd just found out that there are 3 different microladies types (small, med, and large busts).

Is there only 1 microman size?

Also, now I see there is a microSISTER.  What is the difference here?  I need something like a micro-kid (male and female).  Do they make such a thing?

thanks

Just offering a suggestion to JD staff.  I was looking through the customs area and of course everyone that customizes has his/her own thread with their collection.  Then also, you have just posts that are customizing questions and advice.
Would it not be better to maybe have 2 customizing threads?  One for 'Customizers' Collections' and one for 'Customizing Questions and Answers'?  Just a thought!  :)

since you seem to be an expert on Gands, FW, is that a mask that covers their whole head or that actually what their head looks like?
