You know, when I read this thread title, I thought you meant like "Oh great, another kitten killing thread" and it turned out to be a REAL dead cat.
Sorry to hear that. When my cat died last year, I was pretty sad too. It was a real bummer.
She was about 12 years old....and had lived with my Dad all that time. My stepmom wanted me to take her to my house (since I finally settled down and bought a place instead of moving all the time like I did through my twenties). I said I really didn't want to disrupt her final years, but she insisted....so I did.
Even 2 weeks after she moved in with me, she was still hiding under the couch most of the day except when I would sit with her. She was always an outside cat, and HATED being in the house. She also had to wear a collar with her name on it, (just in case she got away) and she hated that too.
One night I had some friends over, and she got outside as people were walking out to my patio. I didn't see her again that night, and so I put up missing posters all over the neighborhood the next day.
I was in line for AOTC when I got the call that someone had found my cat. I was SO excited, until they told me that they found her dead in their yard. They had two mean Germand Shepards that probably killed my cat, but they blamed it on coyotes or something.
I ended up picking her up the next day and taking her to get cremated. It was really sad.
The worst thing is now my girlfriend's cats live with me, but neither one is friendly like my cat was, and they just run away all the time. I miss my cat.
