Star Wars Model Kits

Have any of your purchased the ERM Star Wars model kits for "greebles" and things as add ons to customs or custom vehicles?  Chewie's custom tank has gotten me thinking about good sources of greeble parts for larger surfaces.  Anyway, I'm just wondering if people have used these and if they work well.

I use bits from old mecha kits... so long as the kits are styrene (as most are), you should be able to use any part for almost any application.

The problem is you might spend $15 - $40 for a few greebly bits.

I use tons of model parts, and not just Star Wars kits either. I've used parts from military kits (armor, naval, aircraft), cars, real-life spacecraft, etc. Just about anything will do with modifications and imagination

I found a CIS tank droid at my Hobby-town  and it has alot of little greeblies.

Thanks guys.... I figured you could use stuff like this.  The key for me is what Rem hit,  I don't want to spend a bunch on greebles.  I'm going to keep an eye out for models though.  Never know what you might find on clearance right?

Yes - models are a good idea.  Check Big Lots if you have on in your area in the toy section maybe.

I picked up a ton of Star Wars and other models about 6 years ago for less than a buck apiece when my local comic shop decided to liquidate their plastic model inventory. I've been parting them out ever since

Hi there,

I never throw out anything. My wife and I go to flee markets and find all kinds of stuff, including old model kits. When I made my pod racers, I used model kit frames, Crayola marker shells, plastic Coke bottles a loose and incomplete Sabulba pod racer, $1 store submarine toy, ect... anything that would make since when put together. As said in the old school house rock show said, "Necessity is the mother of Invention" ( and what’s in the pocket book ).

Where as I havent actually used SW model kits I have culled parts off other types of models. Gundams are a favorite target of mine, as are beleive it or not old power ranger parts. Ive ransacked my old Joe vehicle parts too on occasion. 

But you never really know what youll find till you start looking.

The best advice has been said...  Throw out nothing.

Or if you do be selective and have good reasoning to do so.   Like it's just too damn big to keep for instance.

I keep everything from computer cases to drink stirrers and more...  Model kits are pricier and pricier these days, so buying cheap kits isn't as easy...  And buying from HLJ isn't always fun due to international shipping.

Keep your eyes open at toy shows for model kits cheap...  Or flea markets or whatnot.

Old Star Wars kits have as useful parts as old battleships...  One's no better than the other generally.  I just sold the Dagobah Encounter kit I had to Ryan actually and it's almost a full playset unto itself.  Little work and it's a fantastic set.
