Going online with a PS2. Help!

Okay so I picked up the new PS2.  I am totally new to the online gaming world.  I tried to setup and have been battling this thing for about a week now.  Im finally caving for help.  Anyone?

What problems do you have?  I need to know specifics.  Did you set up the modem hardware first?  Did you set up an account for the game?  Give me details please.
