The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars Episode VII
« on: Today at 06:20 PM »
It seems like the circumstances regarding the Empire in EP7 are leaning towards either A) the Empire is resurgent B) never really went away and now exists in a state of Cold War with the Republic, such as it is or C) the war never really ended. I'm fine with either, but would prefer something along the lines of B. Lucas intended for the Empire to be defeated at the end of ROTJ, as he intended the film to be the last at various points. He also intended for there to be as many as 6 more films beyond Jedi at one point, so it's uncertain if the Empire had been truly defeated. As has been pointed here and elsewhere, the Empire suffers a major defeat at Endor, but not a fatal one. You can look to what's happening in the Middle East right now (to a certain extent) and elsewhere in history to see how this plays out.

The Empire, militarily and politically, remains intact post Endor. The Emperor dissolved the senate, placed command of the galaxy in the hands of regional governors, and supported them with oppressive military that is only slightly represented at Endor. The entire Rebel fleet is present at Endor and suffers more extensive losses, one assumes, than the Imperial Fleet did. That same Rebel fleet is unlikely to have completely liberated the galaxy from an Imperial war machine that is at 97% capacity. No doubt some systems reject the Empire and there is a popular uprising. No doubt the Empire responds. No doubt someone, one of those governors or as yet unknown character (Max Von Sydow?) steps into Palpatine's shoes. The Rebels and Empire settle into a decades battle of attrition that sees a fledging new repbulic constantly under assault by an Empire that is simply too large and too powerful to truly go away.

I went ahead and got one. After a week of looking at the retail one and fence sitting with him, I figured what the hell.

I fiddled around with the headset and it does work better, so thanks Jesse. I do think my example is a little bit looser than maybe yours, but it's fine. And I agree that there's nothing really bad here overall in this wave. There's a lot of complaints about this, that or the other thing and I keep expecting someone to lend me their pass to Perfect Town. I'd like to visit. I'm stunned we're even getting figures like Toryn Farr or the Commander after the near fatal calamity that was 2012. Let's be real. This line has nearly used all its nine lives. We could be Joe collectors after all. I have my likes and dislikes and more importantly I'm having my cake and eating it too. Let's enjoy what we have and maybe not expect perfection or personal apologies for the affronts against humanity that are imperfect toys.

I agree pretty much with all of Jesse's thoughts on Wave 4. I have the set now (except for Luke) and very impressed all around, even with Yoda. He seems very small in that blister and for $10 it's a stretch, but overall I like him. The Commander is nearly perfect, loose hands aside. He's a figure I've wanted forever and they've done him justice. Toryn Farr is another character I've always wanted and happy with her too. I almost wish the headphones were sculpted on, to avoid losing them (they are a little loose) but no real complaints.

Yeah this was the biggest look and move on I think I ever did.

I'll just repeat last year's with some adjustment:

Padme Handmaiden
R5-X2
Trade Federation PK droids 2 pack
SA C-3PO
Senator Palpatine
Toonbuck Tora
Kitster / Wald
Bib Fortuna
Tey How
Female Naboo Pilot

Wow, Vader looks amazing. May have to reconsider him.

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: Black Series Rumors
« on: July 30, 2014, 04:54 PM »
Yeah I just shrugged at this. No doubt some of these guys are in development, because you know, what else, but I think it's clear from what we've seen recently that the 'collector line' is not going to generate a ton of excitement and certainly not 18 figures at a crack. Maybe for the movie next year (probably) but I'd like to see some follow up from some of the places that leaned on this. A lot of the comments I see out and about regarding 'other sites' and their reporting makes me think what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Vintage Kenner / Re: History of vinyl cape Jawa
« on: July 30, 2014, 04:48 PM »
For me the vinyl cape Jawa was something of an urban egend and probably explains my fascination with the Jawas in general. From the EB set and some of the catalogs (Sears? I forget) I expected this one but never found it. Few if anyone even knew about it and among my circle of friends, very poor and far from any completeists, it was positively mythical. This was before there was a real understanding of variations. Most people did not know/care about Blue/Red Snags; DT Luke; etc. It was only after the line ended, mostly in the early 90's, again for us, that any of this became interesting. Yakface was not a figure I became aware of until the early 90's. I was 11 in 1985 when the line ended, and my interest transferred swiftly to Joes and Transformers. By '87 I found girls and rock and roll and the rest is history. Until I got back into collecting, of course, early-mid 90's, and reconnected with Star Wars. I always like the Jawas and the VC Jawa always remained an object or goal. I finally got mine about 4 or 5 years ago. Glad I did as I recently paid twice as much for my DT Luke, a figure that is rare but I think is fair to say not as rare as the VC Jawa.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6" Black Series 2015 Wave 1
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:47 AM »
I think one factor may be time. We have a window until next Christmas for OT and PT figures and after that it's unlikely any significant attention will be paid to them. We have five or six or more movies in the pipeline in as many years and the toys will be turning from one film to the next. Who knows on long term but in addition to definitely curbing tooling costs maybe Hasbro is looking at as this is their last hurrah with all these guys. We may not get all the figures we want in this scale.

I expect more at NYCC if only to fill in some known blanks (3-PO and Emperor black series, SL royal guard and rebels obi-wan). I expect the further we get to toy fair the more the gates will open. Episode 7 toys won't land until thanksgiving so there will need to be a lot of pre-game for the august reset a year from now.

Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Rebels Mission Series
« on: July 27, 2014, 10:06 PM »
I agree 100%. Outside the deluxe 6 inch this was the highlight for me. I'm a fan of these and I get why people aren't but combining the vintage aesthetic with the outstanding sculpting and not to mention the price... I love it.  I'm glad to see some of these characters again.  I know I've bought them time and again but these are hallmark pieces (Wicket especially) and it's likely we will not be this way again with these characters. Starting next year it will be an unyielding avalanche of new.  Bring it on. But let's enjoy the OT one last time before.

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
« on: July 26, 2014, 12:17 AM »
Haven't seen too much reaction on it, but in addition to the outstanding 6 inch offerings, the Saga Legends/Mission Series stuff I thought was excellent. The Wicket/Biker Scout in particular I thought sculpt wise may be the best representation we've ever seen on these guys. Bossk/IG-88 also very, very good. IG-88 and the AT-AT Driver honestly were positively 1998, though IG's figures have all more or less been similar, outside of the neo-vintage release. I personally enjoy these quite a bit and feel they're getting better all the time.

I was just thinking what would be next in the deluxe 6 inch line and I think a Dewback is about as strong a lock as you can get. I'd like to think a landspeeder wouldn't too much of a stretch, but not sure. A Snowtrooper and E-WEB heavy blaster and as mentioned elsewhere a Hoth Han or Chewie maybe with a Probe Droid would be candidates as well.
