The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Why would Lars take in baby Luke?
« on: August 20, 2009, 12:32 PM »
I was thinking about this the other night. What was the conversation like between Obiwan and Owen Lars about taking in Anakin's child? Did Obiwan tell Owen what happen to Anakin? If he did, why would Owen put himself and his wife at risk if Vader found out his son was alive? At the end of ROTS we see Owen and Breu very happy to see Obiwan and accept the baby. What made Owen become so negative towards Obiwan? Why didn't Obiwan just raise the baby by himself or at least setup an agreement to train Luke as he grew up?

I'm not sure this has been clearly explained anywhere, but my take on it is this:  Owen & Beru are more than happy to take on an adoptive son.  Maybe they can't have kids of their own, but Anakin is family of a sort and so why not take on his boy to honor Shmi if nothing else?  They obviously raise him/love him like a son despite retaining the aunt and uncle title.  When Luke talks about joining the rebellion or seeking out Obi-Wan, Owen is just pulling the crusty old "stay and help onthe farm" bit to prevent Luke from going off to war.  If you knew the boy you raised as a son was likely heading off to a life of fighting, you'd probably want to keep him sheltered as long as you could.  I don't think Owen is so much negative at Obi-Wan as he is just scared of Luke running off and getting hurt if he knows the truth about his dad.

I brought up the reluctance of Obi-Wan to train Luke over in the Yoda thread, but totally agree with you there.  I don't understand at all why Obi-Wan wouldn't be more involved in Luke's training at a younger age, especially after what happened with Anakin after starting his training so late.

The other piece I don't understand is why they didn't change his name from Luke Skywalker to something else if they were trying to hide him.  Why not call him Luke Lars until he finds out he is truly a Skywalker?

QB- Just stop, Favre is not better at this point.
RB- Vikings
WR- Seriously, for once the Eagles are deep and talented at the postion. Berrian is fast, but not a #1
O-line- Vikings are good, real good, but if the Eagles are healthy they have 2-3 potential pro bowlers there.
Defense- Vikings front 4 is nasty, but the Eagles were #3 in the league last year. I expect a drop off because of everything they've lost but they still be very good.
Coaching- Not even close

The only clear cut winners are RB and d-line and you could argue the rest. Vikings have a cake walk schedule, but every year someone comes out of no where to the schedule means dick.

Personally I love the circus, its gonna be that much more funny when they lose in the 1st round. Oh and Favre is something like 6-10 at the metrodome. Huge pwnage.  ::)

Okay, I don't recall Favre ever getting benched.  When was the last time McNabb was benched?  Kevin Kolb?  Enough said.  I think Favre is just about washed up, but I would take him over a guy who's too lazy to show up for the Superbowl.  I mean really - the team has so much faith in him that they went out and signed M. Vick?  Vikes have a better O-line, the better running game, and a much better defense as well, and I don't know how in the world do you rank Philly as #3 last year.   ???

And thanks for the laugh on WRs.  Please tell me you don't truly believe Hank Basket, DeSean Jackson, and Kevin Curtis are among the leagues elite receiver corps.  That's just too funny.  I don't like Minnesota's receivers, but I'd expect about the same performance out of Berrian, Rice, and newcomer Percy Harvin.

Andy Reid looks like Einstein next to Childress, but he's 50 and never won a Superbowl, so no reason to think he's got a better chance to do it this year with an even weaker defense.

We do agree on one thing though - I fully expect to see the Vikes make the playoffs and blow it per usual.  Favre has faded down the stretch the last 3 seasons, so it will be sweet justice to see them go 9-0 then lose the first round of the playoffs.   >:D

The Eagles are better. They beat them last in the playoffs and are younger, faster, and generally better in multiple areas. This isnt Favre from circa 2000, he'll be toast and wind up costing them more than helping them like he did last year with the Jets. We all remember how that love fest started last year. Besides that Philly owns Favre and have his whole career. Look up his stats against them.

Regular Season Stats for Favre vs. the Eagles: 5 wins and 6 losses big whoop.  I would hardly call that owning a QB.  Look up Favre's stats playing against the Vikes in the Metrodome - that's pwning.  Besides, you can hardly predict the Vikings season solely based on Favre or how Favre does against the Eagles defense.  In what areas do you think the Eagles are better?

QB- Advantage Vikings (when will McNabb be benched?)
RB - Advantage Vikings (I'll take All Day over Westbroken any day)
WR - Toss up (I don't really like anyone here)
Defense - Advantage Vikings
Offensive Line - Advantage Vikings
Coaching - Advantage Eagles
Most players convicted for killing animals - Advantage Eagles

I think I'm going to side with the Vikings here.  I even think the Vikes have an easier schedule this year.

Well, based on those areas, I would argue that the Bears are going to be a match for Vikings.  Similar defense and ball control style, but better coaching than Brad in my opinion.  Cutler provides a similar advantage and is a lot younger than Favre, who has broken down at the end of the last couple seasons.  I think both will be very competitive, but both also lack a strong receiver threat to compliment their QBs.  If the Packers defense has improved in the off season, they'll be right up there too.  Nice to see contenders in our division again regardless.
I think and have thought for a long time that the Bears D is mightily overrated.  I don't disagree that their team is better with Cutler but Forte needs to prove he isn't a one year wonder and their D needs to get 5 years younger.

Spoken like a true homer.  ;)  Frankly, I'm skeptical that the Vikes can make the playoffs given Brad's coaching.  I'd trust in Forte's ability more than I trust in Brad's ability to successfully use all the weapons at his disposal.  Also factor in that Favre has not had any time to gel with his new team and has practiced even less than at any point in his career - the Vikes have a lot of question marks as well.

I still think the Giants and Eagles are better.
I don't...the Vikings lost their best player on Defense in EJ Henderson last year and still almost beat the Eagles in the playoffs last year with basically a rookiee QB.  Favre makes AP all that much more dangerous because now they can't stack the box all day long.  Even though I hate the man I still root for my team and believe they are now the NFC favorites...but mainly because of their Defense and ball control offense

Favre definitely helps the team, assuming he doesn't decide to retire again.  Have fun with him Viqueen fans!

You should get to Target and pick these up ASAP if you want them.  Most of the stores around me have them in the SW planogram at $16-17, but a few in the area have already started clearancing them and they are all gone.  They come in small white boxes and are hanging on the pegs near the basic figs and galactic heroes.   I've only seen them at Target.

Collector's Tips / Re: Wal-Mart Figure Stands!
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:43 PM »
I found these 2 months ago.  It was tough to find some without major cracks in them, I think they're made of bamboo.  I was tring to decide if I should buy like 50 of these things, my crap is all over the place right now.

I need to finish my basement so I can spread out more.

I haven't found any with cracks across three wal-marts, but some are definitely in better shape than others.  My problem is that the WMs around here only seem to carry a handful of them.  I'm using 4-5 per display shelf, so I have to visit a new WM every time I start on a new shelf.   :P

Thanks!  I'll have some new photos to share in a couple of weeks.  I ran out of space and will have to revise how I display these after I pick up some JL cases from Jeff.

just curious on if its a good idea to open box sets just to display them in Medicom cases. I love how they look stacked in the cases. Not sure if I will ever sell them, hopefully not, but do you think they lose a lot of value when opened? Sometimes I see some figures listed seperatley and they sell pretty good. Just so you know. I have no intentions of ever selling them but I want to protect my investment a little. Please share your ideas and opinions.

I guess it depends on your display.  I like having a little compartment box for each guy, so I tear into any kind of packaging, be it boxes, cards, etc. If you just have your figs on a shelf, then I would totally keep them boxed, though I still might open them up to take a look at the fig.  Some of the detail on the back and being able to repose them is part of the fun of collecting these (for me anyway).

Collector's Tips / Wal-Mart Figure Stands!
« on: August 16, 2009, 11:35 AM »
Okay, technically I think they are meant to be spice racks, but you get the idea.  I recently found these at Wal-Mart and am starting to incorporate them into a lot of my loose displays.  They're only $5.74, which is way cheaper than any other stair-displays I've been able to find.  YOu can fit figures 2-3 deep per shelf depending on the figure and whether or not you're using stands.  I found them in the aisle with the dishware racks and silverware trays.

Been a while since I made any changes to this, but I had a SSC gift card to burn and picked up a spare Clone Armor Obi-Wan.  I have never opened any of my SSC, so it was nice to pry one out of the box.  They are super detailed and love the articulation, but joints are pretty loose.  Still, this is easily one of my favorite 12" figs.

Hot on the heels of my last two, Tarkin arrived from Thailand today in nice minty form.  I am slowly becomming a Kube Completist.   :-[

And here's how he looks!  I was worried about his condition given the use of a stock photo in the auction, but I think he's dead mint.

Wonderfest Chewie arrived in the mail today!  He's neat, but I definitely prefer the EB version.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Is Yoda a coward?
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:13 AM »
I was surprised to see the title of this thread when I was viewing the main page of the boards so I had to take a look...

Well, couple of things here:

#1 - I don't get your rationale on why Obi-Wan couldn't train Luke.  He could have easily set up some kind of deal with the Lars family to train him periodically or be some weird uncle that helps him.  If you're syaing Obi-Wan just had to sit and wait for something like his aunt and uncle to get crispy-fried, that seems like a pretty weak strategy for Obi-Wan.  It also doesn't jive with the movie, since Obi-Wan asks Luke to join him BEFORE anyone knows what happened to Owen and Beru.

#2 - Months on the Falcon still doesn't make sense to me.  Your rationale on clothing doesn't make sense - the issue is that Han and Leia look pretty much the same coming out of the Falcon to greet Lando as when they escaped Hoth.  Lando didn't give them clothes prior to their landing did he?  Maybe they cleaned up and just coincidentally looked similar, but its a valid plot hole in my opinion.  Even if it was just a few weeks, I don't see how Leia could have fixed herself up and I seriously doubt that Han carries make-up and hair care products on the Falcon.

All I thought was cheese was the new hope line.  Kinda like saying YOOO JOEEE! in the Joe flick...meh..probably just me though.

Don't even tell me that the Joe's don't yell this in the movie.  Do the bad guys at least yell "Cobra! Cobra! Cobra!" before they start shooting?   ;)
