Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Jeff For Fan Club President!
« on: April 28, 2006, 06:43 PM »
It is with a heavy heart that I must abandon my campaign for the Honorary Title of President of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club.   :'(

I would not give up this fight if there was a chance that we would prevail. But it is now clear that even when all the provisional ballots are counted, there won't be enough outstanding votes for us to be able to win. And therefore, we can not win this election.

My friends, it was here that we began our campaign for the presidency. All we had was hope and a vision for a better Fan Club. It was a privilege and a gift to spend four weeks traveling this Forum, coming to know so many of you. I wish that I could just wrap you in my arms and embrace each and every one of you individually all across this nation. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I will always be particularly grateful to the colleague who became my partner, my very close friend, an extraordinary leader, Willrow Hood (aka the Ice Cream Maker Guy).  I thank him for everything he did.  Willrow and I would be the first to tell you that we owe so much to our families. They're here with us today. They were with us every single step of the way. They sustained us. They went out on their own and they multiplied our campaign, all across this country.

I want to thank my fellow staff members and my friends. That great ‘band of brothers’ who criss-crossed this country on my behalf throughout April. Thank you. They had the courage to speak the truth, and they spoke it again and again, and for that, I will forever be grateful.

Thanks to Democrats and Republicans and independents who stood with us, and everyone who voted no matter who their candidate was. What you did made a difference, and building on itself, we go on to make a difference another day. I promise you, that time will come. The time will come, the election will come when your work and your ballots will change the world, and it's worth fighting for.

I want to especially say to the Star Wars Fans in this journey, you have given me honor and the gift of listening and learning from you. I have visited your homes. I have visited your churches. I've visited your union halls. I've heard your stories, I know your struggles, I know your hopes. They're part of me now, and I will never forget you, and I'll never stop fighting for you.

You may not understand completely in what ways, but it is true when I say to you that you have taught me and you've tested me and you've lifted me up, and you made me stronger.  I did my best to express my vision and my hopes for the Fan Club. We worked hard and we fought hard and I wish that things had turned out a little differently.

I'm proud of what we stood for in this campaign, and of what we accomplished. When we began, no one thought it was possible to even make this a close race. But we stood for real change, change that would make a real difference in the life of our nation, the lives of our families.

So here -- so with a grateful heart -- I leave this campaign with a prayer that has even greater meaning to me now that I've come to know our vast country so much better. Thanks to all of you and what a privilege it has been. And that prayer is very simple: God bless America. Thank you.

If you've been procrastinating and you still want to cast a vote, I would ask that you vote for the current leader in this race - Tommy "USCWANNABE" Costabile - by entering tom.costabile@gmail.com as your referral.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: TSC Figure Cases
« on: April 28, 2006, 06:11 PM »
Looks like Hasbro will have a new case for the TSC figures later this year...

Rumors from earlier in the year said these would be Target exclusive, but that white mailer box sure makes it look like they will come from someplace else... (HasbroToyShop perhaps?)

Thanks again for the speedy payment!   :)

Maybe this week will be my lucky week?

After my finds this week, I'm up to... one.

I personally missed "Part 1" of the story (in Detective #817 I believe) since my local shop was sold out by the time I got there - but, from what I've read in the last three issues I don't believe that Jason Todd has been mentioned.  I think that his story might be being covered in Nightwing, so someone else might be able to shed some light on that for you (Jeff - I thought you used to read NW fairly regularly?).

Yeah...

Jason Todd is not dead OYL and is currently in New York City posing as Nightwing in that book.  They haven't really explained "why" Jason is now bothering Dick, but the explaination is coming soon I guess (hope)...  :-\

He's basically the same character as he was when he was the Red Hood, but it's just Grayson he's after instead of Bats.  Maybe he got tired of getting his ass kicked by Bruce so now he's moved down a notch?   :P

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Hasbro 1st Quarter Losses
« on: April 28, 2006, 03:36 PM »
So, this afternoon I finally had a chance to listen to the Q1 2006 Hasbro, Inc. Earnings Conference Call (click on section 2 to hear them talk about SW, a few minutes in).

For those too lazy to listen, in this conference call, they claim that sales of Star Wars for 1st Quarter of this year were at $51 million globally, compared to $101 million in 1st quarter 2005 (that number included all merchandise that was available in stores on April 3, 2005)!   :o

They also go on to talk about how 2nd quarter will suck-ass since 2nd quarter last year had $147 million in Star Wars sales globally and they only expect to make half of that in this year's 2nd Quarter if they are lucky (and THAT is the whole reason the UGH promotion is in 2nd Quarter  ;)).

And finally, in the Q-N-A portion, they talk a LOT about how they are banking on the Transformers Movie and Spider-Man / Marvel in 2007 to really pick them up going forward as they see more and more Star Wars drop-off...  :(

Well those are fairly disappointing to me.  I don't buy this line, but nothing there is going to encourage me to do so.  Where's the Wampa?  Where are the Imperials?

Um... The Rebel sets there are Hoth Wave 1 sets.

The Wampa and Imps are in Hoth Wave 2 sets:

It's that kind of attitude which is losing this election for you, Ralph Nader.

Oh... we'll just see about that...  >:(

Yeah, I didn't see it so much as a win by the Wings, but a choke job by the Oilers.  To the Wings credit, they didn't let it slip away when the Oilers offered it to them though...

Lots of bad calls (or missed calls), but man was it just me or did it seem like the Oilers put the Wings on the power play 10 minutes out of the 20 minutes in the 3rd period?  And a couple of those PPs were 5-on-3!

Edmonton had a great shot to go up 3-1, but all those 3rd period penalties just killed them in the end.

As creator of the Official Ice Cream Maker Guy Website, I hereby throw my support behind the Smentek/Hood campaign :-*

Incidentally, I finally got around to throwing your banner up on CloneWarz today when I updated with some old news. Huzzah and so on.

Yeah, I'll get right on those front page announcements since I know you all love them so much!

One of the lines that we got for the reason they chose Indy was that it was "centrally located" and easy to get to for the majority of the country.

If you draw a 500 mile radius around Indy, you cover a lot of ground - St. Paul, Lincoln, Little Rock, Atlanta, DC, Philly, Buffalo, Detroit, Toronto, etc.  If you draw a 500 mile radius around LA, you cover a lot of California, a lot of desert, and a lot of ocean.   :-\

Anyway, to keep the rumor buzzing, here's some info that I got from an e-mail list I subscribe to -  the LACocnCenter did in fact make a pitch for C4.  Here's a brief exerpt:

Quote
I've been working with the LA Convention Center and Visitors Bureau on
the bid to get Celebration to LA for months now. Blame, me, flame me,
whatever- but I drove 4800 miles round trip for C3 and wouldn't mind it
a bit closer this time 'round. Proximity to Hollywood and San Rafael
might allow us to see more "A-List" actors show up, and perhaps a bigger
LFL archives exhibit to boot- we had 120 props and costumes at FIDM..

And the LACCVB and City of LA is incredibly behind this convention- more
than I've ever seen an organization gear up for something that is just a
potential event. They want it to happen here, and are willing to do what
it takes to make it work.

When LFL and Gencon came out to tour the LA facility, we presented a
large unified front of all the fan groups in the Central/Southern
California area. There are several thousand of us in the lower half of
the state... In an informal poll, I found it interesting how many of
them made the same arguments about not attending Cs 1-3 that are being
made here, but will now bend over backwards to volunteer if it is on the
west coast. I left a lot of friends- some bigger fans than I, if that's
possible- behind when I went to C3; they just didn't have the means to
travel to Indy. I'd love to see them get a shot at going to a
Celebration, but am not thrilled that others of you may have to face the
same decision they did for the previous three cons.

I guess we won't know until we know, but it sure sounds like LA tried to land it...

Saga Collection '06 / Re: VOTC/VTSC - Buying Extras?
« on: April 26, 2006, 11:09 PM »
For VOTC, I bought 1 of each for my opener set and then I grabed 3 of the figures for a second opener - 1x Han & Chewie (for the desk at work) and 1x extra Stormtrooper.

2x Han Solo
1x Princess Leia
1x Luke Skywalker
1x Obi Wan Kenobi
1x Darth Vader
1x Lando Calrissian
1x Boba Fett
1x C-3PO
1x Yoda
2x Stormtrooper
1x R2D2
2x Chewbacca

This time, I'll grab a second Biker Scout and Endor Han, maybe a Tusken (not sure until I find at least one to open and judge)...
