The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: Toy Fair 2013
« on: February 1, 2013, 11:06 AM »
From spies at German Toy Fair from JediNews UK (I've bolded the most interesting parts):

Quote
The Black Series 3 3/4".  The new Vader art black card style...not vintage...but same size. It is squared off with no die cut fancy shapes.  The bubble takes up nearly all the card and wraps around the edges and taped, similar to the ROTS line back in 2005. Figures on display were Anakin, Padmé and a Clone.  These appear to be the same Ep2 figures that were originally going to be in the Build-A-Droid line.

So, there you go.   I guess that kills speculation that the vintage cards were coming back.

Very disappointed to hear that The Black Series will use the new Vader art and not the retro-vintage cards.  But at least they are still quality 3.75", even if they are just the previously announced BAD figures on a new card.

12" Figures / Re: 2013 Hasbro 12" Figures Released
« on: January 31, 2013, 10:13 PM »
I really want to see how silly they look next to the normal versions without, ya know, shelling out any cash.

As far as I know, Jayson is planning to pick up the Slave I for his Kubricks.  If he does, I'm sure Yakface will have some nice comparison shots between the various Slave Is.

6" Figures / 2013 SDCC Exclusive 6" Fett w/Carbonite Block
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:06 PM »
We've got a trusty source that says Hasbro is looking to kick off the 6" line in a big way at SDCC this summer...

(here's where I insert the standard "always in motion, the future is" disclaimer - you guys have all seen how much the plans have changed since last August/Celebration 6)

If it happens, it's going to be a very, VERY popular 6" figure... or should I say figure set?   :-X

6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?
« on: January 31, 2013, 12:51 PM »
Just taking a look around the general internet, a LOT of the geek blogs are freaking out (positively) for these.

There may be a bit of reservation amongst the 3.75" loyalist worried that the 6" line costs will start cannibalizing the 3.75" tooling budget if the 6" line takes off, but out in the general toy blog world, there is a TON of positivity and excitement for these.

Should be an interesting ride as we wait to see where these fall.

Since Disney entered the picture, we have seen a lot of change.  Coincidence?
I'm not sure I subscribe to that as much as the changes in the toy business.  Look at some other licensed boys toys.  And the growing trend seems to be to offer a range of figures in multiple scales.  We've seen that in movie lines like Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Green Lantern & more.  If anything, Hasbro Star Wars seems a little bit late to the game in that business model shift.

People have been asking for these since the beginning of the fan Q&A (2006/2007) and probably long before that.  It would be interesting to find out why we're finally getting these after Hasbro had said "no thanks" to this new scale for so long.

Are 3.75" sales to the point where Hasbro had to finally try something to appease the retailers?  Is it a Disney directive?  Is it Hasbro themselves testing the waters to see if 6" scale would work for Episode 7?

Movie Heroes / Saga Legends '12-? / Re: Class II Ships - Ideas?

Dessert Skiff

What would you put on your Dessert Skiff?  A banana split?  :P

While I'd love to see a new Skiff in the Class II assortment, I agree with Jesse that Hasbro knows they could get away with that one for more than $20 as a store exclusive, especially if they go the POTF Kenner box with it.   I think I'd much prefer that if it meant they'd take the time to get the scale on it fixed like they did with the Speederbike upgrade.

Had a #nerddream last night that I found a Class I Death Star Gun with Saga'06 DS Gunner and gray Death Squad Commander (DS Trooper repaint) and a Home One Holotable/Display with OTC Madine and TVC Ackbar.  :-[

Just tossing this out there to alleviate concerns - straight from the latest PR email from Hasbro:

Quote
Yesterday, Hasbro's new line of collector-targeted Star Wars figures, Star Wars Black, was announced on USAToday.com, which will include both traditional 3.75-inch action figures and a brand-new scale, 6-inch figures.

If Black Series is for collectors and it contains traditional 3.75" figures, then it stands to reason those 3.75" figures will continue to be $10+ collector-style 3.75" figures.

Whether or not the Movie Heroes/Clone Wars lines end up in $6/5POA land remains to be seen, but there should be enough evidence now to stop the "OMG the 3.75inch collector line is dead" stuff...  for now.  We'll see where we are next year if 3.75" has another year like 2012.  :-X

I think it's going to go like this:

Lower priced "cheapo line".
Higher priced 3.75" line, less stuff but keeping the status quo.
very much higher priced $20-ish line, 6" figures, testing the waters.
And then go from there.

Yeah, you can almost see the separation:

$6 - 3.75" for kids (5POA like Iron Man, Spidey)
$12 - 12" for kids (Like Anakin/Clone)

$10 - 3.75" for collectors
$20 - 6" for collectors

Buy at the basic or double your money for extra big fun!  :P

Did anyone else read DD's quote and catch a bit disdain for collectors (who they now cater to)?

I don't think so, I think that was him more speaking to the general USA Today audience...  but based on some of the things collectors have had to say about Hasbro (or even him specifically) over the past year, I would not be surprised if he is harboring some annoyance with the hard core "I want Cantina Guy #15" folks.  :-X

Sure you don't want to go?

Sure, I want to go...  the family budget and real life just got in the way again this year.  :-\

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: Toy Fair 2013

Man, what a turn around.  Just a few weeks ago, it was sounding like Hasbro might not have anything to show for Star Wars...  but now we'll probably at least get:

- some 5POA Movie Heroes figures for kids
- a wave or two of Vintage Collection er, Black Series 3.75" figures (though they may end up just being pulled from the cancelled Droid Factory figures)
- hard copies of the Black Series 6" figures, with maybe a slideshow peek at Wave 2?

Might not be so bad afterall...

6" Figures / 6" Black Series - 2013 Wave 2
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:04 PM »
Only news we have so far on Wave 2 is that it will be another four figures...   thoughts/guesses?

I'll guess they keep up the 3 OT, 1 PT mix
- Jedi Knight Luke
- Princess Leia
- C-3PO
- Anakin (RotS)

(it'd be just like them to give Han the shaft until wave 3 or 4 with the way they've been treating him lately :P).

6" Figures / 6" Black Series - 2013 Wave 1
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:01 PM »
Wave 1, due in late July (maybe even as soon as SDCC) or August.

- X-Wing Pilot Gear Luke Skywalker
- R2-D2
- Darth Maul
- Imperial Sandtrooper

Maybe they will keep the vintage kenner cardback style, but just change the name from "The Vintage Collection" to "The Black Series".

Could be they are trying to escape the "vintage" part of the name to be more future focused...  after all, if it's just a plain black cardback, it'd be a little boring. ;)

6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?
« on: January 29, 2013, 12:01 PM »
Let's keep this thread about the general 6" line and move the 3.75" news to the "Future of SW Thread" since it's about to get crazy in here, I think.  ;)

Back to the 6" - Luke looks great...  but $20 each?  I think I'd rather have the $160 instead of the 8 figures.  :-X

Also, I like how they say the new line will focus on the Original Trilogy... but then Darth Maul is in the first wave. :P

"The first wave of four, due out in early to mid-August, includes Luke Skywalker in his X-Wing Fighter flight suit, fan-favorite droid R2-D2, bad guy Darth Maul and an Imperial Sandtrooper."

Dragging this topic over from the TVC section...

I was thinking about this last night as I was dusting some shelves.  It's too bad that things are in a crazy state of flux right now, because there are a bunch of low hanging fruit here for Hasbro.

So many little vehicles mentioned here already (the Mos Eisley speeders) and even stuff like Yoda's Escape Pod from RotS would make a nice set.  Hopefully they find a way to keep the Class I sets alive in whatever happens next with the line.   :-\
