Collect All 92! / Re: Death Star Droid
« on: May 17, 2010, 02:51 PM »
As for the DSD, I got him with the same mass purchase of the entire set of new ANH figures as a kid, so I probably never gave him much thought. One of my favorite things to play was Jawa Droid Sale, though, and he was always there. And he hung out in the Death Star, too, I think he ran the elevator or something.

I don't have that BAD version...obviously didn't get that wave, even though I would like the figure, so oh well. Maybe someday Hasbro will make big Droid Factory sets of the pieces or something. Or maybe in a few years ebay will be the answer.

I am happy with the black POTF2 version (The real DSD anyway, IMO) and I like the Sandcrawler version a lot to cover my other memories. And I really like that Clone Wars version, too.

When I was a kid, R5 was Artoo's pal, and if Han ever needed an Astro-droid, that was who he went to. And as everyone said, he was the copilot for the Y-Wing from the moment it arrived.

I am happy with Saga2 R5. The bad motivator works for me.

Vintage R5 was another bad guy to me...I think I said in the R2 thread of how I used to pretend they were both cannons due to their gaping holes in the barrel bottom.  R2 was the good guys cannon and R5 was the bad guys...ah memories.

So I guess we have Scott's childhood to blame for the monstrosity that was POTF2 R5. I bet you just loved it, didn't you?!

I always assumed the black "thingees" under the helmet were pushed up goggles. Now that you mention hair it's all I can see...sort of like one of those kissing couple/candlestick optical illusions.

I wish I had thought to make mine stand in for Wedge when I was a kid. I got X-Wing Luke alomg with most of the rest of this set (at a Rizzo toy store at the mall...I still remember the strong smell of the plastic bag my mom carried them in as we continued to shop. I kept popping my face in there to look at them all.) Got a second one a few years later on an ESB card. Man, that one could've been Wedge!

I'm satisfied with the VTSC Luke...small quibble is that his shoulders are a little bulky, and Hasbro has used it as a generic body too many times when Young Luke ought to be unique in his short stature. I was so happy with it, in fact, that I got a spare of the Vintage version, and was only too happy to get it redecoed in the Droid Factory 2-pack (Though I would've been ecstatic to get the grinning head variant at that time.)

The Legacy Collection / Re: Legacy Wave 13 - Expanded Universe
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:58 AM »
Found these this weekend, my TRU had the endcap and what must've been 5 or 6 cases worth between it and the aisle. I was pretty happy to find them at 5 bucks a pop, too.

Pretty dissappointed in the already yellowing Spacetroopers, though. Now I'm hoping he gets a rerelease down the line so we get better plastic. Happy as a clam to actually own Jaina and Jacen figures, those are two from my EU wish list I never thoought I'd see, and after the scary talk a week ago, I was ready to dash my hopes for a second time rather than jump through hoops or pay exorbitant prices for them.

I wish the repack figures had worked out better for me as far as putting together a complete BG droid...I might have picked up an R2 or Chewie or Obi Wan if they were worth the while. (As it stands, I need arms!) A funny thing that occurred to me is if this is the only case ratio we ever see of this wave (as I believe it is) then Hasbro actually had to make twice as many of the BG droid as any of the figures they decided were worth selling to us. Kind of amusing.

All in all, I'm pleased with how this wave ended up. I am done with Legacy now, and good riddance! I give the collection as a whole a D+. Do better with the Vintage line, please!

Vintage Walrus Man was really one of my favorites...I remember hearing that Cantina Alien figures were coming, and really hoping for the band...I was kind of disappointed by who we got instead, but whatever. Walrus Man was always a buffoon in my stories, and I remember he would get called "Buttface" a lot. The joke was on everyone else, though, if there was some swimming to do!

We definitely need a modern update of this guy and his partner Evazan. Even the Cantina Bar retool is pretty crappy now. And let's not forget the total suck that was the disco posed version form the first Cantina Cinema Scene. I think I threw it away as soon as I opened the set!

« on: May 10, 2010, 12:28 AM »
I vividly recall finding vintage Red Snaggletooth on the pegs for the first time at a Toys R Us...I'm almost positive he was the last Star Wars figure I got. I, too, was blown away by the update since I already had the Blue Snag. I really liked the new version...I remember playing that they were father and son, and Red Snag would cause a lot of trouble.

POTJ Zutton was one of the first figures I actively scoured for...everything else had seemed to come easy up to the end of POTJ. Later on he became fairly common, and I seem to recall a head-color variation that was funky looking.

For my money, Vintage is definitely a cross between Zutton and Takeel. Whenever I saw Takeel sitting next to Han's booth I would think "there's Snaggletooth." I would much rather see an update of Takeel over Zutton on a vintage card, even though the picture wouldn't "match" the Vintage version.

Count me in the camp that had one...thanks to my parents getting my brother and I the Sears set for christmas. I believe he is still in my basement packed away with the few cherished childhood playthings I've kept too...but he looks nowhere near as good as the pics posted here so far, the silver boots are almost rubbed off.

I didn't pick up the KMart set for the modern version as it didn't wow me and I had already kitbashed a Blue Snag out of a POTF2 Takeel head (with hair painted black) on a POTF2 Garindan body painted the appropriate blue and silver. That could stand an update to the SAGA2 version, and I'd prefer to do that over tracking down the "official" release.

« on: April 29, 2010, 11:09 PM »
Yeah, Hammerhead figured into my stories as a kid...probably because of all the Cantina aliens they gave us, he was the freakiest-looking with the tiniest bit of screen time and therefore I could do what I wanted with him. He was always a bad guy...heck every alien was a bad guy (Out of turn, I'll admit to getting my mail-in Admiral Ackbar with his funny stick and immediately having him sword-fight with Luke Skywalker and try to destroy the Rebels.)

I really like the Saga2 Hammerhead and won't be seeking out an update...they would probably screw up a more articulated version with poofy cloth robes or something. Bah! The further along we get in this the more I detest "soft goods." As Jesse said though, I can't knock the Cantina Bar version or the original POTF2 version (with his outlandish pacifist's BFG,) both are solid figures in their own right, if not as authentic as the most recent release. No stinker here!

Collect All 92! / Re: Greedo
« on: April 28, 2010, 02:18 PM »
Ha! Greedo here surprised me, I figured we would get Boba Fett as #13...

But I did get Greedo with the other aliens in the Sears Cantina Set, so I guess this is more accurate "chronologically." He was definitely in the B-Class of figures I would play with (and lower as we progressed through the movies and got to the well-done aliens from ROTJ)

Never noticed as a kid how inaccurate his costume was, either. When we got the POTF2 version, it was easy to admire the authenticity, though now his pinhead and washed out colors make him another oddball from that time.

I like the Saga/Cantina Bar Set Greedo, but I've gotta admit it's just because I prefer the sculpted vest to the hairy thing the VTSC version has. Of course you can put them together to get the best of both worlds, and maybe Hasbro will release it like that someday, but stricktly speaking I go with Saga/Commtech/OTC. Plus, you gotta love the blast wound.

« on: April 26, 2010, 12:09 AM »
For whatever reason, as a kid I called this guy a "squat commander." My first one's neck post broke in '79, and I remember writing to Kenner to complain and ask for a replacement. They sent me a brand new one, as well as a whole set of replacement weapons and capes for all the even came with four X-Wing guns, which were real cool because I didn't own an X-Wing yet!

I consider this figure 100% done. The color was wrong on the vintage, end of story to me. I always assumed he was grey with a rank badge because up until the last minute it was actually going to be a Tarkin figure, when they realized he was a boring old man who never even used a weapon, and made him a new head.

I kind of enjoy the kitsch of the POTF2 disco-dancing version as well.

Wait, wait...OTC or Saga2? I could've sworn that the OTC one was a repaint of the POTF2 one, and the new sculpt was from the first Saga2 wave..?

Either way, yeah, a neo-vintage resculpt would be very appreciated...especially if they gave him a vintage-y coat, one of the best cloth robes from back then IMO. I have never been able to get the "new sculpt" to stand on his own.

« on: April 23, 2010, 10:13 PM »
I had the vintage one as a of the first couple figures I had. But it never saw much play. I think I would have played with him much more if Kenner had made a Bantha I wanted one of those back then.

I'm split down the middle about the VTSC and the Saga '03 versions...the softgoods on the VTSC is about the best softgoods I've come across. I did buy two of them when they were available. I really like the Saga '03 version (again, more of a sculpted robes fan), the head and "sand-stand" are really great bonuses (the stand is one of the best-looking stands Hasbro ever tried.) I would have bought another one or two of those if I had ever found them in the it was I feel lucky to have the one I do. And I'd be totally up for a rerelease with a modern/dustier deco.

The old Saga sniper/Massiff wrangler sculpt is good for background filler. The POTF2 one is abysmal, though, and the absolute worst is that god-awful Bantha pack-in one with the weird legs.

« on: April 21, 2010, 12:34 PM »
I'll join in on the Jawa love-in here, too. Jawas have always been a favorite of mine too, I wore a Jawa costume for Halloween in '79 (kindergarden). Please Scott, add a picture of the Vintage Jawa without the's a shame to cover up all the sculpted goodness under there.

I got my first Jawa as the last of the original 12 back in '78, of course it was the cloth robe version. On the bonus side, I was able to talk my mom into getting one for my little brother too, since they were so hard to find. So I already had the collector mentality at 4. Those original jawas also stood in for children when I would play as a child.

I was very pleased with the POTF2 two-packs, I bought them every time I saw one, resulting in having more of those than any other figure by far. Over the years I've given some away to nephews or others.

I loved that the Ronto jawa was another new sculpt. I wound up with a couple of those, too.

The Commtech version has to be my favorite. The sculpt is just perfect IMO. To my eye its a work of art the likes of which come along very rarely in the toy line. I have a customized one that wears a shorter robe to show off his spindly little legs (Not because I needed to have that, but I used the longer robe/skirt for another custom, so I sort of wound up with a leggy jawa.)

The OTC ones were a real nice upgrade, and a two-pack of jawas is always alright by me. I picked up a few of those too.

The 30AC version really won me over for simply the fact that it was a well-articualted jawa without a light-up panel on the hood, plus I was impressed they went to the trouble of making a movie-accurate variant (ie the orange-vest jawa.) I was able to do away with my custom "short POTF2 jawa with JarJar's vest" version. I got two to have a non-vested version as well.

The Legacy version, however, just hasn't rubbed me the right way at all. The rehashing of the 30AC one is fine and kind of expected, but the new belt plus the brown vest plus the ion blaster just added too much bulk and really detracted from the figure. And that's not even getting into the scale of the pack-in droid. The first time I didn't want a second of a jawa.

I don't yet have the Legacy soft goods version. It looks to take care of some of the bulk issue, but then again, it's a cloth bottom robe so I'm not expecting much.

An "honorable mention" ought to go out to the Hallmark "Jawa & R2" ornament which fits in well with my jawa figure display, and the Clone Wars Jawa two-pack, which add some diversity too. That makes for, what, 13 different Jawa sculpts so far? Not too shabby for the little guys...

My pick for the "ultimate" modern jawa so far still goes to the CommTech version. One of my favorite figure sculpts ever.

Collect All 92! / Re: Darth Vader
« on: April 16, 2010, 02:06 AM »
Vintage Vader was one of my favorites as a kid too. Wore him out to the point that he couldn't stand anymore, and like Scott said, lost the saber, the cape, the paint...

Got a replacement in '83, and just loathed the vinyl cape at that point. New Vader ditched the 70's vinyl for a more modern cloth cape by stealing Squid Head's. The brown worked for me since Jedi Luke had a brown robe too.

As far as ultimate Vader goes, I think as long as we have the current state of cloth robes I will never be satisfied with Vader in the same way I am with a VOTC Han or Chewie. The cloth is always too bulky, too smooth, and too "shimmery" for me to be supremely satisfied. We need to get to a state of a nicely pliable, yet molded and detailed plastic/PVC version of the robes...something I have no idea if it will ever be possible.

Until then...I guess the 30AC version is my go-to, even though I only bought it at the time for the Ben Kenobi robe accessory.
