Other Toy Lines / The Future of Action Figure Lines?
« on: October 17, 2008, 12:39 PM »
It seems like these days there are more lines than ever on the pegs (heck, Star Wars alone has three assortments right now), and there's a lot more competition in the action figure aisles than there was even when I started collecting again in the late 90s.  We're seeing more and more exclusives, and now entire waves as exclusives (like Marvel Legends, and DCU Classics).  It seems like most, if not all, lines are getting more expensive across the board.  We're seeing prices for 3 3/4" stuff like SW, Joes, the upcoming Marvel Universe, Indy, etc. hitting $8 each in some places.  The larger scaled (6") stuff like Legends and DCUC range anywhere from $11 to $15 right now.  Anyways, where do you see the action figure lines headed in the future?  Do you think we'll start seeing less lines overall (and less individual releases within those lines)?  Will we see more of a shift to smaller scale stuff with oil prices (even though they are currently a bit lower) and have less and less 6" and taller scaled lines on the pegs?  Is the competition in the toy aisle going to start to weed out some of the various lines?

It seems to me (and I guess I'm thinking mostly of Star Wars, but it applies to other lines as well) that we're getting more releases than ever in a year (not even counting exclusives), but at the same time prices are getting higher.  Like I said, even ten years ago when I started collecting a little there was just a lot less in the aisle.  Now there are just tons of lines, many of which seem to be aimed more so at collectors, in addition to all of the "kids' lines" (I'm thinking like TMNT, Power Rangers, Ben 10, etc.)

Anyways, sorry for the long post, but do you see any changes in the action figure lines in the next 1, 5, or 10 years?  In a way, it sort of reminds me of my days as a sports card collector when I was younger.  When I was collecting those (late 80s/early 90s), at the time there was (I'll use baseball as an example) Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Score, and a "new" company called Upper Deck (I might be forgetting a couple).  I can remember (about the time I got out of it), it started branching into more and more lines and sublines, prices went up (and you got less cards per pack), and collecting them got to be more of a chore.  It might have been age, and I don't know how the industry in general did, but it seemed like a lot of my friends and I got out of them almost totally at that point.  The action figure collecting area sort of seems to be heading that way too.  There are more and more lines all the time, prices are getting higher, there are more collectors, and in many cases we're getting less for our money (less accessories, etc.)

There's a short list of things we've seen so far.  I'm leaving off the "main" characters (Obi-Wan, Anakin, 3PO, etc.) since we know they are on the way, unless its a significant costume difference (Padme).  I'm sure there is lots that I'm missing here too, but I thought it might be fun to add to the list with each new episode.

Other Collectibles / Star Wars Clothing
« on: October 9, 2008, 04:10 PM »
I didn't see that we already had a thread for this, so I thought I'd start one here.  I don't know how many of you buy/own Star Wars clothing, but I've got a few t-shirts around the house.  Anyways, I was over at the Zazzle site (which has the "customizable" Star Wars shirts at SWShop), and it appears they have a couple new lines of shirts - consisting of "Homeboy" and "Hater" shirts.  The homeboy ones are just various characters " my homeboy" type shirts, and the "hater" section has a few different choices.  Anyways, just thought I'd pass it along for anyone interested.  I kind of like the crashed AT-AT shirt under the Hater section which says "Fail".  Anyways, you can check them out HERE if you are interested.

On the more general topic, like I said I mainly have a few t-shirts that I've picked up over the years.  I usually tend to lean more towards ones that look like the "vintage" shirts that were out with the OT myself, but I've seen a number of newer ones at stores in the past few years as well.  I also noticed that Tina Fey was wearing a Princess Leia for President shirt at the end of SNL a couple of weeks back..."This is our most desperate hour" - which is available at SWShop as well.  Anyways, just thought I'd start a SW clothing topic for anyone interested.

Star Wars Universe / Favorite Track from the Star Wars Soundtracks?
« on: October 9, 2008, 11:43 AM »
One thing that has always been great about the Star Wars movies is the great music of John Williams.  I've been listening to some of the soundtracks lately while working, and it got me wondering what some of the favorite "songs" or tracks are around here.  I can't point to any specifically that I don't like, but there are some that stand out.  The main theme and Imperial March go without saying obviously, as I'm sure almost everyone enjoys those.  A few other favorites:

Main Theme
Imperial March
Yoda's Theme
Yoda and the Force
The Hologram/Binary Sunset
Cantina Band
Princess Leia's Theme
TIE Fighter Attack
Emperor's Throne Room
Duel of the Fates
Battle of the Heroes

There's plenty of others to list as well, but I don't have the time right now.  Like I said, I can't point to many I don't like really - so this list could be long.

TV-9D9 / The Clone Wars - Season One Discussion Thread
« on: October 3, 2008, 08:13 PM »
Just thought I'd start up a place for us to discuss the new weekly series, starting tonight.  Two new episodes scheduled for tonight: "Ambush" featuring Yoda and some clones, and "Rising Malevolence" featuring Anakin, Ahsoka, and Plo Koon...and I'm guessing some more clones :).  Anyways, feel free to discuss the series here, for those who are watching.  I also just read that the episodes will be available for download on itunes starting tomorrow (new one each week), for $1.99 each.  Just as a heads up for everyone, if interested.

Vintage Kenner / IGN's Greatest Star Wars Toys - A New Hope
« on: October 3, 2008, 09:36 AM »
IGN has a new feature up discussing the greatest Star Wars toys, and this time its featuring the "Star Wars/A New Hope" toys of the vintage days.  Although you may not necessarily agree with their rankings, its still a nice trip down memory lane.  Just thought I'd pass it along.  Man, I miss those simpler days sometimes :).

The Bullpen / Marvel Legends Red Hulk Wave
« on: October 1, 2008, 03:48 PM »
I found two figures from the Red Hulk Target wave of Legends today, Black Spidey and Union Jack (picked up the Spidey).  It was indeed $14.99.  There were a couple other figures from this wave that I was on the fence about, but I think I'll likely pass at that price.  This wave has been pretty spotty around here though, as I've only seen one each of Silver Savage and these two.  The Black Spider-Man is a really nice figure though, and much better than the previous SMC version I have.

The Bullpen / Marvel Universe Wave 1

For anyone interested, CoolToyReview put up pics (carded and loose) of Wave 1 of the Marvel Universe line (this is the 3 3/4" one).  Its made up of:

Human Torch
Iron Man
Silver Surfer

Star Wars Universe / Which Star Wars Movie Do You Watch the Most?
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:50 AM »
I suppose these days with many of us having seen these movies tons of times, and with them showing up on television more regularly lately, the days of fans popping in the DVDs to watch one of the films from the Saga might not be as frequent.  But, if you do still pop in the DVDs once in awhile, which movie from the Saga do you find yourself watching the most?  Do you choose to watch a trilogy at a time, or the whole works together, or just a film here or there?

I have to say, until Spike aired them this year, I hadn't watched TPM or AOTC for quite awhile.  I caught them both on Spike (actually, I usually catch at least some of each of the movies when they are aired on there, if we're home).  I'd have to say I watch the OT in general the most, by far.  I suppose over my lifetime I've probably seen the original Star Wars the most of all, because I remember a time where that was the only one that was really on TV (usually on FOX locally on weekends, or on TBS).  I went through a period where if I popped in a DVD to watch though, it was usually Empire (my favorite), and Jedi gets plenty of views as well.  I watch ROTS the most of the prequels, and enjoy checking that out every so often as well.  I know that I'm probably against the norm here, because although I've seen them all so many times, I do still watch them probably at least every other month or so (the OT at least).  Anyways, which movie do you choose to watch the most, if you watch them at all anymore?

The Original Trilogy / Most Iconic from the OT
« on: September 19, 2008, 03:27 PM »
I mentioned this while posting in the OT vs PT thread in the prequels section, that the Original Trilogy seems to really have a lot of iconic characters, vehicles, locations, etc. that are recognizable by non-fans and the public in general.  What are the most iconic items to you from the OT, or the things that you think almost anyone in the general public would know?  Off the top of my head:

Darth Vader
The Droids (R2/3PO)
The Soundtrack/Music
Death Star
Millennium Falcon
X-Wing/TIE Fighter
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Jabba the Hutt
Boba Fett
the Cantina
Lando Calrissian
Speeder Bikes

I've listed those in a loose order of what is most recognizable, but there are certain things that I think that almost anyone might know.  Vader and the droids are obvious, and I think the main characters in general from the OT are pretty memorable.  The secondary ones like Yoda, Lando, and Boba Fett are also fairly well known.  I know those that don't even know the movies that well will reference some things, for example - not necessarily nice or appropriate, but I would hear people reference someone/something fat or big as "Jabba".  Winter weather sometimes brings about Hoth references, things like that.  Or there are memorable scenes people might remember from each movie like the Hoth battle, speeder bike chase, the trench run.  Anyways, what are your most iconic images from the Original Trilogy?

Jocasta's Reading Room / Star Wars Tales
« on: September 19, 2008, 12:06 PM »
I've been on a bit of a TPB buying kick lately, and one of the SW ones I've been looking at are the SW Tales books.  I've never read any of them, but they seem to get fairly favorable reviews on Amazon (if you can go by that at all).  I was just wondering if anyone here had read them, and if you would recommend them as good/fun reads.

Here's the page for them at Amazon:

The Legacy Collection / Legacy Collection Battle Packs
« on: September 11, 2008, 03:32 PM »
It looks like RS has a report up showing that some previous Battle Packs are making a return in the Legacy Collection (not that they need to):

Clone Attack on Coruscant
Jedi vs Darth Sidious
Jedi Training on Dagobah

I guess these are good sets for kiddos or new collectors, but they've all been out fairly recently so I'm not sure if it is necessary or not.  I won't be picking any of them up personally, but I always kind of thought the Dagobah set was kind of neat.  I would have liked it as a kid (or if I didn't have the figures included).  A nice Obi-Wan and Yoda, a decent Luke, a Vader, and an R2 repaint.  Now if they'd just put out a Dagobah playset to go along with it :P.

Watto's Junk Yard / Green Lantern
« on: September 5, 2008, 03:36 PM »
WIZARD has art (and a link to more) up for some concept art for the possible upcoming Green Lantern movie.  Apparently this art (by Brian Murray) was used as part of a presentation package for the film.

The Legacy Collection / Vehicles: Do You Buy Them?
« on: September 2, 2008, 04:24 PM »
I know we had a thread going like this in one of the other "line" threads, but I thought with the recent push of the vehicles - plus the introduction/testing out of larger vehicles like the Falcon and AT-TE - it might be a good time to discuss the vehicle subset overall.  It seems like (myself included) when we discuss running out room (or budget) lately, its the vehicles that really eat up the space in collections (whether its on display or in storage).  Has that changed anyone's vehicle collecting habits?  Do you buy them all (at least all new ones, repaints aside)?  Do you stick to one trilogy over the other?  Do you pass them altogether?

Personally, I sort of pick and choose right now - although I will say I've considered dropping the prequel vehicles strictly because of the space (and budget) issues.  I haven't done that yet (nor have I picked up an AT-TE yet), but I will say they definitely take up a lot of room and it makes it difficult for someone like me to display them all (I have a relatively small office to display anything I collect).  Anyways, I think I'd always like to collect the best version of each OT vehicle (if we start getting more "new sculpt" treatments similar to the Falcon), and right now I'm only missing the Sandcrawler and Cloud Car from vehicles that have been made.  I might be facing a bit more of a budget crunch in 2009, so the prequel vehicles - as cool as some of them are - might be something that has to go unfortunately.  I guess you can lump in the new "playset/environment" pieces into this as well, since it is a similar situation of higher prices and larger space takers.

Now that we've seen the Clone Wars animated movie released (which was a bit of a surprise when it was first announced), do you think we've seen the last of the "new" Star Wars movies on the big screen?  Of course, we'll likely see 3D versions of the Saga at some point - or maybe even just regular re-releases for some anniversary or an other - but do you think we'll see any other new movies on the big screen?

Will we see another animated movie (even though this one didn't do great box office numbers) eventually?  Will we see some sort of live action movie to kick off that series if/when it happens?  Will Lucas (or someone) go back and continue the Saga with even earlier prequels - or something that happens later on in the timeline?  Obviously, its impossible to know for sure, but I was curious what some peoples opinions were on the future of Star Wars at the theater.
