Jocasta's Reading Room / Best OT-era Novels/Books?
« on: May 2, 2008, 04:15 PM »
I was just curious if anyone here could recommend some good OT-era books.  I have the Thrawn trilogy, which I'm in the process of re-reading, but beyond that I know next to nothing about what is good out there.  There are so many books at this point, its hard to keep track.  Anyways, are there any books (or book series) in particular that you might recommend?  I think I've heard positive things about X-Wing books (featuring Wedge?), and some other ones as well.  Although I'm sure there are a lot of great books from throughout all time periods, I guess I find myself most interested in reading in the OT-time frame - or at least about those characters that began in the Original Trilogy.  Anyways, sorry for my lack of knowledge on these books overall - I'm kind of just dipping into the "EU" books for the first time outside of Thrawn and the Han Solo Trilogy - but does anyone have any recommendations?

Other Toy Lines / Retailers Scaling Back on Movie Lines?
« on: April 28, 2008, 12:24 PM »
Looking at some of the more recent trends, it seems like many retailers (Target in particular) are scaling back on the mass movie line releases that we've seen in the past.  Aside from Star Wars, which seems to have the selling power to drive big releases, it seems like a lot of others are having their problems.  I remember movies (aside from SW) like Fantastic Four, Superman Returns, Spidey, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. all having entire aisles dedicated to them at the stores (Wal-Mart in particular with the first couple), or at least large sections.  More and more it seems like some of the stores just have an endcap or regular sized action figure section in the aisle.  I've noticed that TRU seems to be banking on Speed Racer, as that still has a large set up at our local store - but movies like Iron Man just have a normal section stuck at the back of the store.  Wal-Mart has little to no space for Iron Man, and Target has an endcap and that's it (at least at our store).  From what I've read, Indiana Jones might be much the same (endcap/section).  Also, other movies (Narnia) seem to just be TRU exclusive type releases (although I'm sure they won't be huge sellers, so it makes sense).

Anyways, not complaining at all, because it seems to be a better approach overall - but it seems like aside from Star Wars and possibly Spider-Man/Transformers, that stores are kind of scaling back on the huge releases for movie lines that we used to see across the board (at least for awhile there).  I expect Hulk will see a smaller release as well (like Iron Man), and possibly even The Dark Knight seeing a similar release.  I've said before, I think the strategy with Iron Man is a good one.  It has a balanced lineup with villains and alternate armors, and doesn't seem to be quite the sea of Iron Men like we've seen with other superhero releases.  Again, maybe the big push is still on the way for some of these things, but it seems like many retailers/toy companies are taking a little bit different (better?) approach with some of these movie lines.  Heck, I'm still surprised that they don't put out Harry Potter toys for at least the kiddos anymore, but those early Mattel lines must have really bombed.  Has anyone else noticed a change in the movie lines, or is it just the fact that there are so many to get "in and out" of the store in a summer now - or the larger number of action figure lines in general that are keeping retail space at a premium these days?  I know it seems like the number of different action figure/collector lines out there has exploded just since I started collecting SW again in the late 90s.

The Legacy Collection '08-'10 / Most Wanted Vehicles
« on: April 23, 2008, 04:30 PM »
I was going to call this "Vehicle Wishlists", but that's more Scott's domain, so I'll just leave this as a want list.  With the pictures, speculation, and announcements of the new vehicles (in various sizes) coming this year - it looks like newly sculpted vehicles are definitely back on Hasbro's radar.  After seeing that things like the Falcon, AT-TE, and others can be done - which vehicles would you like to see done at this point?  It can be OT, PT, EU, resculpted vehicles from the vintage/POTF2 days - or whatever you are interested in.  What are your vehicle wants at this point.  Here's a few I can think of:

Cloud Car (again, the old standby, probably a longshot but I'd like to see it)
Tantive IV (again, a long shot, but I'd take any new OT vehicle)
Snowspeeder (newly scaled sculpt)
AT-ST (newly scaled sculpt)
Jabba's Sail Barge (unlikely, but it would be cool)
Lars Family Speeder
Speederbike (new, clear stand included)

Juggernaut/Turbo Tank
Darth Maul's Sith Starfighter (larger scaled sculpt)
Gungan Bongo (Probably in the minority here, but after re-watching TPM on Spike TV, I thought this might be kind of a cool vehicle to have.  Its not too terribly big, and pretty much the only underwater type thing we see in the movies for the most part)
Dooku's Solar Sailor
Bail Organa's Airspeeder

I'm sure there are lots of others I'm forgetting, but those are a few off the top of my head.  Like I said, my most wanted ones would probably be newly sculpted vehicles from the OT - whether it is for improvements in scale or just something that hasn't been done (Cloud Car).  I'm not an expert on scale (I'll leave that to Jesse), but I'd be all for any that could be done reasonably close to scale - or that add in features/etc. to make them amazing (Falcon).

Ok, another vehicle opinion question.  With the short break coming up from most of the current SW offerings, I've been looking at some things I had to pass on earlier and see if I wanted to pick them up now or not.  One of those is the AAT.  I know its been released a few times in various pain schemes, and I was just curious if this was a decent ship.  I see the TAC version is currently in stock at HTS, so I could pick it up from there I guess if I decided I wanted it.  After checking out TPM for the first time in awhile on Spike TV lately, it sort of "reminded" me of some of these prequel ships that I never got around to picking up.  Can anyone recommend the AAT, or is it better to pass?  Is one version/paint scheme significantly better than another?

Hall of Justice / DC Universe Classics Wishlists
« on: April 21, 2008, 03:52 PM »
Since it seems quite a few of us here are interested in this line, or have even transitioned into these from Marvel Legends, I was wondering if it might be fun to post some "Top 10" lists after seeing what's coming from the DCUC line for the rest of this year (or at least most of it).  What are you "most wanted" figures after what we've seen is already on the way?

There is still a lot to see obviously, since the line is just beginning, but here's ten off the top of my head that I'd really like to see done:

1. The Flash (Wally or Barry - or both)
2. Green Arrow
3. Zatanna
4. Martian Manhunter
5. Black Canary
6. New Joker
7. The Question (Vic Sage)
8. Poison Ivy
9. Dr. Fate
10. Captain Marvel

Lots of Others: Poison Ivy, Beast Boy, Alfred the Butler, Commissioner Gordon, Starfire, Ra's Al Ghul, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Vigilante, Kalibak, more Batman villains, etc.

The Original Trilogy / Uncle Owen/Aunt Beru and C-3PO
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:40 AM »
I'm sure this has been discussed before (probably long ago), so this isn't a big new revelation or anything - but while watching ANH on Spike this weekend, it got me wondering after the "purchase of the droids" scene, why doesn't Owen (and later Beru) remember C-3PO (or R2-D2 for that matter).  In AOTC, C-3PO is obviously already at the homestead (albeit in his silver form), and R2 visits alongside Anakin and Padme.  Sure, I know that protocol and astro droids are common in the Star Wars "world", but wouldn't the voice/attributes/personality be recognizable on 3PO in particular?  Has anything ever been mentioned regarding this by Lucasfilm or others?  Just curious.

Jocasta's Reading Room / Incredible Cross Sections of Star Wars
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:18 PM »
I was just looking for any opinions anyone might have on this book, The Incredible Cross Sections of Star Wars (The OT Edition).  I've thumbed through it long ago at a bookstore, but just haven't ever picked it up.  Is it a pretty good book?  I've got the various visual guides for the characters and everything, but I thought this might be a good book for the vehicles.  Any opinions?

The OTC/VOTC collection was a great time for OT fans, with a lot of nice figures (even with all the repacks in that collection).  We got two nice Yoda figures, and both have their positives, but I was curious which Yoda you guys prefer.  Do you consider either of them the "definitive" OT Yoda?

The Original Trilogy / Return of the Jedi - 25 Years Later
« on: April 8, 2008, 12:16 PM »
I always enjoy hearing people's discussion, thoughts, and opinions on the movies - and with this being the 25th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, I thought it might be a good time to bring this movie up as well.  It seems like ROTJ is usually looked at as the weakest of the OT, and ranked below the PT for some people as well, but I guess I have fond memories of it because it was not only the first time I saw Star Wars in a theater, but its also the first time I remember going to a movie as well.  Because of that, I have a little more of a connection to this movie.  I can see why the Ewoks may annoy some people, but I never had a big problem with them - particularly as a kid.  Overall though, I really enjoyed many parts of this movie - the whole Jabba's Palace/Skiff sequence, the Speeder Bike chase (which seemed so cool back then too), and the DS II lightsaber battle.  Also, because of my age, this is where the majority of my vintage figures came from at the time.  My two favorites were Han Solo (with Trenchcoat) and Jedi Luke Skywalker.  I can still remember buying those - with allowance/chore money - one at a drug store in a town about 20 minutes away, and one at our local "variety/mom and pop" store.  Back to the movie, I also enjoyed the further expansion of the universe with new aliens like Admiral Ackbar, Jabba the Hutt, Nien Nunb, Gamorrean Guards, all the Jabba's Palace creatures, and even the Ewoks.  It might just be me, but even with the great advances in CGI these days, I still kind of like the traditional, old-school, costumes/masks.  I still think that ROTJ is the only time Jabba looks "right" to me.  What are your feelings on Return of the Jedi?  A worthy capper to the Saga, or a weak link?

After the discussion going in the TPM thread, I was wondering what everyone thought of AOTC at this point.  Like TPM, I re-watched this movie for the first time in quite awhile over the weekend on Spike TV.  Also like TPM, there is a lot of things that bug me, and some stuff that I really enjoy.

I remember coming out of the theater after seeing this for the first time, I thought it was great.  It seemed closer to "Star Wars" to me, maybe due to the presence of the Stormtrooper-like Clones, as well as ties to Boba Fett and other OT concepts.  The vehicles started looking more OT-esque as well, different from the sleeker/shinier looks in TPM.  My friend and I left the theater saying that the last 45 minutes or so (if I remember right) were amazing.  Pretty much from when Anakin and Padme get taken into the arena to the end - good stuff.

I pretty much feel the same way now.  I really enjoy the Arena battle(s), as well as the lightsaber battles following (although I always wished that Anakin/Dooku would have been a bit longer).  It was a nice setup to the Clone Wars and ROTS, and like Jesse mentioned in the other thread - it would have made a nice first movie, setting up a Clone Wars centric Episode II.  Dooku was a pretty cool villain, and I did enjoy Jango even if he was essentially just "cashing in" on the popularity of Boba Fett.  He still looked pretty cool to me, and Temuera Morrison was pretty good in the role.  I don't have quite the problems with Hayden as many others do, as I think he is a decent actor and has been good in other non-Star Wars movies I've seen.

On that topic though, some of the Anakin/Padme stuff was cringe-worthy to me.  From the first viewing to the current one, the "fireplace" scene dialog and the running through the grassy hills stuff was just not for me.  It really seemed cheezy.  I remember someone saying in an older thread one time that the original Clone Wars animated series seemed to portray the love story better with a few words or "looks" than the entire AOTC movie did.  I could see that.  Other than that, I don't know that I have a ton of other major complaints about the movie.  Jar Jar was really toned back, and there's things that could be changed, but the love story stuff didn't work for me as well as I'd hoped.  Also, it might just be me, but for some reason some of the Obi-Wan/Anakin banter really sticks out to me.  Mainly the way that Obi-Wan, when he's "scolding" Anakin, always calls him something that seems excessively long.  "My very young apprentice", "my young padawan", and things like that.  It just stands out to me as sounding strange for some reason.  They are supposed to be "good friends", and for the most part that didn't seem to come across all that well to me.  Anyways, what are your thoughts on AOTC now?

Watto's Junk Yard / Vacuum Cleaners
« on: March 31, 2008, 10:03 AM »
I was just wondering what sorts of vacuums you guys have.  We've always bought what I guess you'd call the "cheaper" versions, usually under $100, and the one we're currently on seems to be on the downslide.  The Mrs. wants to get a "good" vacuum (she has her eyes on a Dyson), but we've just never spent that much on a vacuum cleaner before.  I was curious what types of vacuums you guys have (or have had), and what you might recommend.  Does anyone here own a Dyson, and if so, are they any good?

Watto's Junk Yard / Question for DVR/Tivo Users
« on: March 28, 2008, 03:25 PM »
Just curious, for those of you who have a DVR, Tivo, or some other digital video recording device - do you save things on there for an extended period of time?  Do you just use it to record shows you might miss, watch them, then delete them?  Do any shows or movies get "saved" to rewatch several times, or do you keep things cleared off?  Just wondering.  We've had a DVR for a couple of years now, and it usually ends up getting fairly full by the end of the TV season.  We tend to keep some shows (The Office is one), and rewatch them periodically - or through the summer/until the DVD is released.  Although this isn't necessarily the case with The Office, it seems like many shows get "replayed" less and less, instead replaced with some new reality show during the off months.  Anyways, do you keep your DVR clear, or do you save things every so often?

Jocasta's Reading Room / "Tales of the/from the..." Books?
« on: March 24, 2008, 04:20 PM »
I just had a quick question regarding the "Tales of the/from the" books.  I've often heard books like Tales from Mos Eisley, Tales from Jabba's Palace, and Tales of the Bounty Hunters talked about quite a bit, and I was wondering if any/all of them were a good read.  I've really only read the Thrawn trilogy as far as Star Wars books/novels go (I also have the Han Solo trilogy, but haven't finished it yet) - and I've been looking for some other OT-era based books to check out.  These seem to be talked about a fair amount, and I was wondering if anyone had opinions on them.  Thanks for any advice.
