Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Official Pixar Thread
« on: April 4, 2013, 08:48 PM »
I don't know that the long-ish break between movies is a big deal for Pixar.  There was quite a gap between Toy Story 2 and 3, as well as the Monsters movies.  My daughter was pretty psyched to hear about another Nemo movie, and we're looking forward to Monsters U this summer as well.

Also, put me on the Incredibles 2 petition.  Love that movie, and it seemed like the most ripe for a sequel of any of the Pixar franchises.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Cars

This might be a bit of old news, but I just saw it for the first time today.  I have to admit, aside from our daughter having a handful of the Cars cars, I didn't get too into hunting these down, but these new Disney exclusives are kind of neat.  I wouldn't mind the R2/3PO pack, or the Leia one for our daughter.

I have to admit, having the OT characters included (especially Han/Chewie) has me a little more interested in this line.  Not sure if I'll pick up any of those initial ROTS/AOTC figures, but unless the OT ones are horrible, I might be in on some of these.  We'll have to see what they look like.  Since we already have pretty great articulated versions of these already, it makes it easier to give a little more leeway to a line like this.  Plus, it is nice seeing a $6 pricepoint on SW figures again, even if they are scaled back articulation-wise.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Movie

I was hoping to get out to it this weekend, but may have to wait.  Most of the reviews I've seen of it have been fairly positive, and mostly along the lines of "big stupid fun".  Overall it seems that most people feel it is much better than the first movie, and maybe embraces the 80s toys/comic/toon more than they originally tried to.  If all that is true, it sounds good to me.  I don't expect Joe to necessarily be in a tone of The Dark Knight, and I'm fine with big stupid fun.  Sounds like it could have a decent weekend, so maybe we'll see another.

First trailer for July's "The Wolverine" is up today:

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/thewolverine/

Looks pretty good so far.  From what I understand they are pretty much pretending X-Men Origins: Wolverine never happened, so I don't think this story has any relation to that one.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: 'The Hobbit' movie
« on: March 24, 2013, 04:03 PM »
Just watched it (nearly an hour) with a tour of their facilities, video Q and A, etc.  They did show a clip involving Gandalf and Radgast that is sort of from the appendices, involving the story of the Necromancer.  Also, there were several unfinished/behind the scenes shots throughout the question and answer period that showed a bit as well.  I think you can still view it (again, if you have a code) for a couple months.  He said the trailer will be released this summer.

For anyone that picked up the blu ray this week (and got the UV code included), there is a sneak peek for Part 2, The Desolation of Smaug hosted by Peter Jackson going up in about 7 minutes from now (3 ET/2 CT).  Just a heads up!

I'm sure most have seen this already, but Target has an exclusive version of the Blu Ray of the Hobbit for sale tomorrow that includes a LEGO Bilbo minifig.  I believe this is an "exclusive" fig, as it is Bilbo with a blue jacket - I don't think we've gotten that version yet, right?  Anyways, just a heads up for anyone interested, I think it is the same price as the regular release.

Feedback / Re: efranks' feedback

Eric helped to hook me up with an out of production Harry Potter LEGO set.  My daughter has gotten way into Potter in the past few months, and it is great that we were able to get a set to build with each other since they've dried up around here.  Thanks again for making our family very happy!

Not sure how many of you saw/enjoyed the first Kick Ass, but here's the trailer for the sequel (Red Band version, just to warn you):

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/13/watch-the-kick-ass-2-red-band-trailer

To be honest, I don't usually go for the blood/guts type movies that much, but I really did like the first Kick Ass and am sort of looking forward to this one as well.  Jim Carrey looks like he could steal the show.  I've only read a few issues of the comic book, so I'm not sure where the story goes (or if the movie even follows it all that much).

The Bullpen / 2013 Marvel Legends
« on: March 13, 2013, 08:47 PM »
I got the latest wave of Legends from BBTS, and they really are some pretty nice figures.  Of the variant figures I received the Protector (instead of White Iron Fist), Hyperion (instead of Sentry), Red She Hulk (instead of Lyra/Savage She Hulk), and Archangel.  I still don't have room for all these, until I rearrange things, but I really think Hasbro has improved on the Legend figures after a somewhat rough start.  A nice looking line overall, although not very space friendly :).

I haven't really bought much of the movie stuff this time around, but I did get the Ninja Duel Snake Eyes this week, and it is a pretty nice figure.  I have been holding off on the figures a bit this time around, since pretty much all the ones I grabbed from the first movie (aside from SE and SS) have been packed away pretty much since then.  The Tomahawk (or Eaglehawk) is tempting though, when that hits.

I definitely understand the desire for the line to maintain its standard as far as articulation. I also do understand Pawlus' sentiment about the Kenneresque figures and I share it. I'd be more interested in these than a lot of the Black Series (four inch) stuff we're getting. Articulation isn't the end all be all for me. A lot of my favorite figures are from the POTJ era, with minimal articulation compared to today. A lot of my favorite figures are tricked out. It just depends on what the individual figure requires. If the 5 POA line has great sculpts, they can hold their weapons and can sit in a vehicle, then awesome.

I'm kind of in the same ballpark.  Articulation isn't the end all for me either, although I'm not sure if I'd like to see a return to 5 POA stuff necessarily either.  I guess it would all depend.  The fact that we've already gotten SA versions of pretty much everyone that matters at this point (aside from the upcoming new movies of course), it is easier for me to not get as worked up about it - at least for now.  If Ep7 rolls around and 5 POA is the only option, I'd have to see.  The sculpts would have to be pretty amazing.  One thing I do like is toys for kids, and that aren't $10 each.  I can understand the points that are made about figures holding weapons, fitting in vehicles, and being durable/able to stand.  Of course, there are examples of SA stuff that does all of those things just fine too.

With all of this shift away from prequel era stuff, and rumblings that Disney really wants a return to the OT "magic" times, part of me wonders if we won't see a line approach similar to the vintage days by the time the new trilogy comes around.  Simpler (and cheaper) figures, vehicles (not necessarily to scale), and maybe re-releases throughout the year(s) of the "big guns".  Who knows, maybe those days are gone, but with all the changes we've seen with the franchise lately, you never know.

Star Wars Universe / Star Wars Changes
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:57 PM »
Figured this belonged here as well as anywhere.  With today's announcement of the Clone Wars ending, Detours being indefinitely postponed, and following the delay/cancellation of the AOTC and ROTS 3D releases, it sure seems like a lot of things are changing in the SW universe.  We've seen changes being tried out in the action figure line (with the 6" series and the 5 POA stuff) as well, and it now seems as if we'll have a lack of almost any new SW stuff until after the new movies get going (at least for the most part).

I read in one of the articles today about the CW news that it seems like since Disney took over there has really been a shift away from the prequel era stuff.  Sure, we'll see some figures this Fall, but that is more because of the late game change in plans than anything else.  We've seen the indefinite delay (and probably/possibly cancellation) of both the 3D releases and Detours.  The new Black Series 6" line is made up of 75% OT, and I have read news about the upcoming movies saying how Disney wanted to get back to the look and feel of the OT with the new movies.  Now, I'm not complaining mind you, because although I love all the SW universe (prequels and CW included), I also prefer the OT and that "feel" as well, it is just interesting to me to see what a big shift has come about in the past few months.

Disney really seems to be clearing the slate as things gear up for the new trilogy.  Aside from (hopeful) DVD or some sort of releases of the resolution of CW, I don't know that anything else will be out prior to the new movie.  They did mention some new animated series, but I doubt it is far enough along to make it out prior to 2015.  Everything else (3D, Detours, 1313) seems to be delayed or cancelled.  It is just an interesting time in the SW universe these days, for better or worse.  I just wonder if we'll see even more changes coming up (possibly even with the action figure line), or if things will settle down a bit now.

TV-9D9 / Re: The Clone Wars - Season Six?
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:50 PM »
I guess we had heard rumblings of an ending, but I honestly thought we'd get at least one more season - probably airing on Disney XD.  So much is just left hanging there, so I'm glad we'll hopefully get some sort of resolution whether it is via "bonus content", direct to DVD releases, online, or whatever.  It still baffles me what a freefall it was for the Clone Wars.  It was really the darling of both Hasbro and Cartoon Network (and Lucasfilm) at the beginning, and slowly all three (maybe partially because of Disney) have swept it silently under the rug.

I'm sad to see it coming to an end.  It had a nice run for a cartoon, since so many these days (particularly actiony ones - non Spongebob types) are lucky to get past the syndication number and call it a day.  That being said, I have become invested in characters like Ahsoka, Ventress, Rex, etc. (or even Maul, Cad Bane, etc.) and I want to know what becomes of them.  Hopefully we'll get more details soon.  It is probably a topic for another thread/forums, but I read in one of the articles about this today how it seems that almost all prequel era stuff is being pushed away, whether it is the PT 3D releases, the CW show, or even the whole 75% OT/25% PT lineup of the new Black Series 6" line.  Interesting how that has changed.
