The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?
« on: September 11, 2021, 09:03 AM »
I gotta say, this most recent Star Wars Livestream this week was a bummer. In the first Star Wars reveal livestream in ages, only a handful of new items were revealed, most of them being repaints or resculpts. Meanwhile, feels like there's Marvel Legends, Power Rangers, and Transformers livestreams every week where there are new items revealed by teams that are clearly having fun with the products and invested in their fanbases. I dunno why it's bugging me so much.

You know, I thought the exact same thing watching this week. I still (and always will) love Star Wars, but there just seems to be so little energy in the line/brand lately. Which is strange, because with all the positive buzz with Mandalorian (and upcoming spin-offs), you’d think now would be the time to strike.

I’m also a Marvel fan/collector, and Legends just seems to be on fire the past few years. Something is revealed basically every week, and there rarely seems to be any disappointment. I feel sometimes these days that I’m a Marvel collector who also buys Star Wars things (when there are any). It isn’t as if the products are bad, I think both the Black Series and Vintage Collection have had some great figures, but it is such a slow drip.

Also, and I know this has been discussed a lot, but Star Wars fandom really has become a mine field. I know you deal with that in anything when the internet is involved, but from my experience these days Star Wars might be one of the most toxic. So many splintered groups, many of which outwardly despise what the other enjoys. That goes for the movies, action figure scales, vintage vs modern, take your pick. I know as a fan that enjoys most of it, I am genuinely happy for those who get more of what they like. For example, I gave the animated show Star Wars Resistance a chance. It wasn’t bad, but didn’t necessarily hold my interest, so I kind of stopped watching. Now if they continued making seasons of it, I’d be happy for those that did. It doesn’t take away from the things I enjoy more. The livestream comments section is just ugly, it has to be exhausting.

Although it is there other places, it seems like Marvel, Transformers, Power Rangers are at least somewhat more positive (Joe can be another story, but primarily for distribution reasons), and the fan base seems generally still excited for things instead of the usual “Hasblow Sux” nonsense. Just wish it was a more positive place for fandom now.

Other Toy Lines / Re: The Simpsons
« on: August 22, 2021, 04:58 PM »
So has anyone seen the upcoming Simpsons “Ultimates” figures up for preorder from Super 7? Along the same lines as their He-Man, Turtles, Thundercats, etc figures. Very well done, and quite cool, but fairly pricey. It looks like it could be a great line if Simpsons was really your thing though. I’ve gotten figures from some of their other lines, and they are very nicely done. Wave One is:

Astronaut Homer
Moe
Robo Itchy
Robo Scratchy
Poochie

So my wife recently find out that her job (which was temporarily at home due to COVID stuff), is now going to be permanently at home. As such, we are in the process of redoing our office to make it a nicer workspace for her. That means removing most of my collection and setting up stuff to display in our basement.

All that to say…. and news flash here I know….this barge is a behemoth to display. I’ve been going for sort of a “less clutter” approach to display lately, so I’m in the process of deciding what stays out. This thing can really only fit in a handful of places. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy I have it and think it is a great piece, but it really is difficult for someone like me (with a modest sized home) to display.

I think the overall lack of room has encouraged me to finally unload my prequel era ships. Things like that I had always held onto because “someday I’ll have room to display all of this”. But as I’ve gotten older really I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t know if I want that much stuff out, and I’d never have the room if I did. Again, love the barge and everything, but you really do have to have a space for it.

The Bullpen / Re: Marvel Legends Haslab - Galactus
« on: July 30, 2021, 10:39 AM »
I’m kind of tempted, although I don’t know where I’d put it. I passed on the Sentinel, as cool as it looks, because I had already backed big ticket stuff like the barge and Crest….and I have the two previous ones they had done. At this point it feels like I buy more Marvel than Star Wars, and Galactus would be a great centerpiece to that collection. I do have the previous version, which is nice as well, but not as grand as this new one. I’ll have to see.

I do think it will reach its goal, and there are already teases for Frankie Raye Nova and Surfer as stretch goals, so that will help the numbers as well. It was a lofty goal though.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: HasLab Project
« on: July 15, 2021, 05:32 PM »
I don’t know what to think if this is true. I have been all in with anything from the OT, specifically with Black Series, but I can’t imagine the size/price of this behemoth. Plus, I personally collect too many things anyways, so space is always an issue. I’ve already gotten the barge, and backed the crest, and our house is only so big. Very cool that they are making it though.

Joe Defender / Super 7 G.I. Joe Ultimates
« on: July 15, 2021, 02:38 PM »
Just announced today, Super 7 is doing a G.I. Joe Ultimates line in the same style as their Thundercats, Turtles, Silverhawks, etc lines. Looks like they are based on the style of the cartoon. First wave is Duke, Snake Eyes with Timber (commando), Cobra Commander, and Cobra BAT.

I’ve already been in on the Classified Series (when I can find them), so I don’t need another line, but wow these look good. I know I’m at least in for Snake Eyes. I think my earliest Joe memory was of him and Timber in that first mini series. Still the one I revisit the most.

I’m honestly not usually one to stress too much about packaging, although the shipping the past couple years has been atrocious, because I generally open about everything. The exception to this is retro carded stuff, particularly the Vintage Collection, and even more specifically the figures that were in the original line.

I’ve started getting my figures in over the past week too. I ordered two of each in the hopes that maybe one of each would be passable. First was a lone Paploo, who did arrive in a box, and was in fair shape. A big crease in the bottom right of the card, but otherwise largely “ok”. I’m hoping for a minty set of TVC Original Trilogy figures, but with the WM exclusives that might be too much to ask.

Then today I got in two AT-ST Drivers, packed separately for some reason. One in a bubble mailer, pretty much destroyed. The other in a box, also destroyed (the box was too small). I’m not sure that ordering more would help. First world problem, for sure, but just a bummer.

I’m actually kind of excited by these as well. I know not technically anything “new” character wise, but at this point I just get excited by these more definitive updates of OT characters. I ordered 2x Luke, 2x DSD, and 3x Tuskens....and now we hope/wait.

I’ve seen the complaints about the non-removable helmet on Luke as well. I usually like the removable helmets as well, but I also get it. These Endor figures in particular have always looked a little wonky, so this might be a good compromise. An alternate head would really be the perfect scenario, but that’s probably too much to ask.

All in all, I didn’t mind the showing yesterday. Not a ton of newness, but I liked what we saw. Now new Mando figures please  ;)

The Bullpen / Re: Marvel Legends
« on: February 27, 2021, 09:02 PM »
I wasn’t sure if these deserved their own thread, but they are technically labeled as Marvel Legends on the boxes. These are the new 4”, 5 poa “retro” figures. I was able to find the first couple waves at Target recently (in addition to the Hasbro Pulse exclusives), and I really like them.

Again, very simplified figures, but comic accurate and they have amazing card backs. Kind of remind me of the current MOTU Origins in that they look and feel like toys, and remind me of childhood. Fairly reasonable at $10 each as well. Just pretty cool. Here’s who I’ve grabbed so far:

Spidey/Electro (Pulse Exclusive)
Cap/Black Panther (Pulse Exclusive)
Iron Man/Cyclops (Pulse Exclusive)
Spider-Man
Captain America
Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel)
Hulk
Human Torch
Magneto
Daredevil
Elektra
Ice Man

Looking forward to more! Tough to know whether to open them, I usually open pretty much everything but I’m really digging how they looks on these card backs.

The Vintage Collection / Re: 2021 TVC Wave 6 (New TVC Wave 21)
« on: February 26, 2021, 05:29 PM »
These make me happy, both look really well done. So glad to see an update on this version of Lando, long overdue. Always nice to see more Mando figures. Such a slow drip with TVC, but they pretty much always look great when they do come out.

The Vintage Collection / Re: TVC Tantive IV Hallway Playset
« on: February 9, 2021, 12:03 PM »
I got a chance to open and set mine up last week, and it really is neat. Like you mentioned though, more than one could be a display problem. I picked up two of the Carbon Freeze sets (one full price, one discounted on Amazon), and haven’t even opened the second. Heck, I took the original down yesterday because I just don’t have a place for it right now.I like it, just challenging to display for me.

LEGO / Re: The End of the Road?
« on: February 9, 2021, 12:01 PM »
Although I don’t probably have the amount of LEGO that you guys do, I have been having the same thoughts overall with my collection. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy it anymore, quite the contrary, but we just don’t have the room for it all. Over the past year plus I’ve been downsizing the amount I have on display, to have a cleaner, non “a toy store threw up here” look, which has lead to packing stuff up (and then to selling stuff). I’ve always liked the idea of “when something comes into the collection, something must go out”, but that is sometimes easier said than done.

Like your story Dave, I got into LEGO because of our daughter. I have so many fond memories of building LEGO with her, which led to me starting to buy some sets as well (I never had any as a kid). Now that she has kind of lost interest, and packed all of hers away except for one (TFA Falcon), I’ve done much the same. I only have my OT Falcon out and displayed (as well as a Mega Construx Castle Grayskull). Everything else has been put away. I only ever picked up OT sets, so I don’t have a ton, but still quite a few.

Much like with action figures, it is difficult to purge them. I truly do admire those that can and do. I’ve sold off a lot over the past few years, but much of it has been non-SW, so it was a little easier. I always disliked the idea of having so much of my collection in totes in the basement/garage/etc, but I know I have 12 or more full as I type this. Seems silly.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Transformers
« on: January 31, 2021, 01:48 PM »
Ok, so has anyone seen the reveals of the Super 7 Ultimates Transformers line? Seems like the RED line juiced up, with a larger scale/price. Kind of surprised Hasbro let them do it, although it is different markets. I have some of their other Ultimates figures (Turtles, Thundercats, Voltron), and have been very impressed with them. Anyone interested in these? I have the initial RED figures, and have Bumblebee on preorder...but may change course here, we’ll see.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Thundercats, Hoooo!!
« on: January 31, 2021, 01:44 PM »
Not sure if anyone here collects Thundercats Ultimates from Super 7, but they announced a Thundertank this past week that is getting a lot of conversation due to the price ($450!). I started watching an interview Pixel Dan has up with Brian Flynn (Super 7), that I think does a good job explaining why it costs what it does. I get it, it is a large toy from a smaller company with a probably comparatively small fan base.

I’ve been collecting this line (well, so far just updates of the Mattel figures), and plan to complete at least the main team and heavy hitters, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to swing this or not. I’d love to have it, and they are offering some sort of payment plan, but I have so many other interests I’m not sure if I should. Even within Super 7’s stuff....I love their Ultimates TMNT line, and if it got to the point where they would give this treatment to the Party Wagon, I’d rather have that. Anyways definitely a cool toy, really amazing what we are getting these days.

Hall of Justice / Re: Batman TAS / New Adventures 6 Inch Line!
« on: January 31, 2021, 01:38 PM »
I bought a Killer Croc figure from BBTS recently, and it arrived today. It’s a bit bittersweet because it is likely the last BTAS figure I’ll ever buy. I really enjoyed this line while it lasted, and it basically got me into 6 inch collecting, so I’ll always have a soft spot for it. I have a few figures left to track down, but the aftermarket prices for these are insane. I don’t even want to think about how expensive stuff like the Batcave playset with Alfred sell for. I don’t have a complete collection, but I’m extremely happy with having 80-90% of what I wanted from this line.

I was in a similar boat. I really enjoyed the line from one of my favorite shows of all time, and tried to keep up as they were released, but as money was going other places some started falling through the cracks. Then it got a little difficult to catch up on some because of secondary prices. I too always hoped to get things like the Batcave, Batwing, and Batmobile...but got priced out. I don’t really have room to display them properly anyways, but that is true of many things. Wish I could limit myself to one line like some can do, but I just like too many things!
