Watto's Junk Yard / Re: LEGO #2, Hasbro #3

"Has' Blows It: Kids Say 'No' to GI JOE, 'Yes' to Lego."

In other news, PLAYMATES still in business...how many times can they reinvent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? A LOT, THEY HOPE.

Cool, but I disagree with its line-up. It's too main character happy. Ghosts over Ugnaughts or 2-1B or Imperial Gunner or EV-9D9? Spirit figures are kinda boring, and those can be filled with the "living" counterparts. Why does Dengar rate more than 4-Lom or Zuckuss? Any of the hunters aside from Fett were no more important storywise than Snaggletooth and Hammerhead. (Background characters)  Smuggler Lando? He appears onscreen less than say, Bespin escape Leia.

Anyway, adding to vintage Kenner, I limited myself but couldn't keep it at 20 like I intended. I never wanted a Yarna figure as a kid,  but she's notable as having made it to prototype (why her of all characters Kenner?) and I still don't care  :-\.    I'd almost boot Piett, but there was a lack of a grey uniformed officer in the vintage line so might as well get specific. Most named rebel pilots are incidental, especially since Biggs was mostly cut from ANH. A few droids need representation by their model, specifics aren't important.  I love Cantina aliens, but most of them are briefly seen fluff...Jabba's goons at least are belligerents. The vintage Ewoks assortment covered the Ewok bases for the most part (except a female and wokling).

1. Rebel Fleet Trooper
2. Tarkin
3. Garindan
4. Dr. Evazan
5. Cantina Bandsman
6. Owen Lars
7. Beru Lars
8. Stormtrooper Disguise Han
9. Ceremony Luke
10. Ceremony Leia
11. General Dodonna
12. Sandtrooper

13. Bespin Escape Leia
14. Tank Top Luke
15. General Riekeen
16. Snowspeeder Luke
17. Piett

18. Mon Mothma
19. Mon Calamari Officer
20. Pote Snitkin
21. Oola
22. Slave Leia
23. Wedge
24. Y-Wing Pilot (ROTJ)
25. Vader with Removable Helmet
26. Ewok Village Leia
27. R4 astromech (any one)
28. CZ droid (any)
29. "Smuggler" Lando
30. Ishi Tibb (Jabba one, I guess)

Hasbro was going to do that AMP'D stuff that which was sort of building toys? (Could be why they canned it.)

A 3 3/4" Trek line that doesn't suck.

3 3/4" Stargate line. <-- that also doesn't suck

Fixed that for you...

There was a 3.75" line of Stargate figures for the movie but they were only about 5 POA and had the large, goofy, overly colorful accessories.  They used the AWE Striker for one of the vehicles IIRC also.

   E...

They weren't 3 3/4" (that would've made too much sense), more like 4 1/2",  they looked too big next to 3 3/4" figures.  I had the whole run via clearance sales.  The Awe Striker mold was modified to seat just one figure.

I don't think the differences (evolution) was drastic enough that it matters terribly...  to me the sculpts didn't improve too much really.

Depends on what you compare. Amanaman to Walrus Man? R2-D2 to EV-9D9?

It would matter to some people. I think if they did such a line, people would nitpick that stuff to death. LOL.

"HE'S GOT TOO MUCH DETAIL."

"A desert stormtrooper with a moveable neck? THE HEAD SHOULD BE FUSED TO THE BODY!"

 ;)

I think they should toss ten random figures in a header bag with 10 random accessories, sell them like army men.  :P

I've bought random GI JOE figure lots from China a couple of times, and that was mostly disappointing, probably because the 2002-2006 New sculpt/G2 era lost its appeal to me. And about 7/10 of the random figures are those style. They are rarely cheap enough to take the risk (had to be well under $2 a figure for me). It's kind of like playing the lottery, only you actually get something besides a piece of paper. Some of those somethings might have factory grime on them, or even marker writing. Or the wrong parts. Never tried the random SW lots, because they are never cheap enough (and sellers who sell them seem to be smart enough to pick out better figures to sell in lots by themselves.)

So random chance has a fun appeal to a point.

Adding to vintage Kenner in style would be neat to a point (original trilogy only). But then they couldn't bother to get rocket-firing Fett's foot holes the vintage size.

Of course,  when talking "retro" style, we must remember that vintage Kenner SW evolved. Sculpting improved. They ditched the telescoping sabers. They started to use a few posed stances (Hoth Luke, Jedi Luke, black Bespin Guard). More soft goods. But most folks talking retro probably think 1977, lightsaber inside arms, cheap plastic capes, simpler sculpting.

So would you want Tarkin as they'd make him in 1978 or 1985? Rebel Fleet Trooper? Mon Mothma? Garindan? Ceremony Luke?

That sounds neat, but my nostalgia dies around the $10 mark.

Universal Monsters had a Kenner-esque line from Remco that was good (especially for Remco).

Some company made a silly looking Terminator 3 3/4" line...years before Playmates. I have the endo skeleton figure.

Sad to report that the Rite-Aid near my workplace no longer has the C-3PO with Ewok throne. Was it bought? Did its card finally rot away? It's been months since I've checked.

Now the oldest SW figure is Clone Wars Trooper Denal.  They also still have Heavy Duty and Ripcord from Rise of Cobra.

Got  teeny little Mawhonic, techinically a Discover the Force release. I'd passed him up for months, because I'd passed on his vintage carded release even cheaper during an Amazon sale late last year. But with this version I get the flag. The flag is a bit chintzy, mine's not applied/taped even with the pole.

Proper scaling aside, he'd be awesome figure if he were Ree-Yees scale. You could get a team  of Gran mercenaries. Instead, he's just small and strange.

Anything blind bag/boxed over $3 or is too much to spend on chance, maybe $4 if it's something substantial (as in "not tiny unposeable rubber mini figures"). I got a playmobil guy on sale for $3 but I figured out which one it was based on feel. And at least those and Lego minifigs you can parts swap.

The non-McQuarrie one seems more pulp sci-fi novel cover than Star Wars. But that's not a bad thing. Not sure why they've never revisited concept art figures, I assume it goes back to Hasbro hating (collector) money.
