Other Toy Lines / Re: Transformers
« on: January 11, 2019, 05:43 PM »
Thanks Ben, I appreciate the info. I may just forget it then. I doubt our black hole of a Wal-Mart would have these anyways. I sort of wanted Bumblebee, then thought it might be fun to collect minibots. Still sort of interested in these re-releases, I wasn't able to get many Transformers as a kid so it is kind of like getting many of them for the first time. I got a Prime reissue a few years back, as well as a Sideswipe from when our KB went out of business. Had a Soundwave at one point that I had to sell, although I wish I hadn't. From time to time I still think about trying to get a few modern versions of my favorite characters that just display nicely on bot mode. Saw a new (I think?) Optimus and Megatron the other day at Target. I know the Masterpiecd versions are really the best, but I don't know if I can spend that much.

I found these at Target this week (aside from Bossk). I wanted the Luke because of the face deco changes (although this is one I didn't think was too bad in the previous version), and ended up picking up another Boba Fett for sone reason. I already had one, but kinda wanted an extra for the desk. Originally thought about Bossk too, but didn't see him. IG-88 looked like the deco was different to me as well.

Speaking of the reissues Ben mentioned, I've been hearing about these and wondered how difficult the minibots have been to find. I basically try to avoid our Wal-Mart any more at this point, so I haven't been there in quite a while. I wasn't sure if they had come and gone already, or if they were as difficult to get a hold of as their Star Wars exclusives. I'd like to pick up the Bumblebee at least or maybe the whole set. I remember seeing the Hot Rod the last time I was there, but that's been a long time ago.

I'd sort of like to see a new Y-Wing as well. The couple I've picked up over the years (aside from the CW bomber), and it never seemed real solid to me. The rear landing gear on mine always collapse. Also wouldn't mind seeing Luke's X-Wing again too....or the skiff (which could use a re-do probably too). Really I'd probably buy about any OT vehicle they would put out in that packaging. 🙂

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?

I don't necessarily mind the 5 POA stuff either if the sculpting is there, which it has been lately. I do like getting more articulated versions of the main characters and troops, which TVC does a decent job of covering....eventually. And that's if you can find them. I pretty much just preorder most everything more since retail has become such a gamble. I happened to hit up WM at the times waves 2/3 were showing up there, and found what I needed that one time. Otherwise I only saw Wave 1 at all stores, all year.

I don't see them moving away from 3 3/4" stuff, at least until after Episode 9. Think of kids who came into the franchise primarily with TFA, and started their collections there and moving into Last Jedi (not to mention Rebels, Rogue One, and Solo), and have maybe built up their own little collection only to have a scale switch with the supposed capper to not only the new trilogy but the Skywalker saga? That would stink.

That is assuming kids still care about the non role play toys, which is probably a lot more hit and miss than the old days. I personally hope 3 3/4" never goes away, it is my preferred scale and I like the potential it offers for vehicles, beasts, and playsets. Plus, it is where Star Wars began. Unfortunately, it seems six inch, or larger scale at least, is where most toys have gone. I can't think of much in the aisle, aside from the recent Jurassic toy line, that is still in that size. They might have primarily been so the figures could interact with the dinos.

I could see there being some truth to this as well. I do think, and think it was mentioned at Yakface or in the comments there, that it might be closer to 6" scale. That's hiw the Marvel line(s) are anyway. They might be slightly smaller, but I don't think they are quite down to 5" scale because every once in awhile they throw in a character that hasn't been made in Legends yet (like movie Shocker from Spider-Man: Homecoming), that collectors pick up. I think that line does fairly well too, although I don't watch too closely. Marvel in general may be a better seller than Star Wars at this point.

Not sure how I feel about it overall. I've been getting less and less interested in the 5 POA stuff lately, but am saddened by the fact that maybe kids don't care about Star Wars much anymore. Star Wars is kind of a different beast too where vehicles, beasts, and - in the past - playsets, are a bigger part of the line/universe than other properties. It would be strange picturing the line without them, or at least very, very few.

If it meant that the Vintage Collection got more attention, that would be great though. If it were the only line at that scale, they would definitely have to pick up the pace so there would be more stuff out for movie launch. Maybe still restrained, but at least a dozen new figures from Episode 9 would be nice. Honestly though, if this news is true - and the state of things with Star Wars collecting in general - the writing might be on the wall for TVC, at least as a retail item. I could see the DTC route too, but then we may be looking at $20-25 per figure.

Other Toy Lines / Re: 2019: What Are You Collecting?

I know this thread has slowed down a bit over the years, but thought it might be nice to update going into the New Year. More slowing down and selectiveness for me, just don't have the room these days.

Star Wars

Vintage Collection - Probably most to all of these. Definitely all OT stuff, hope we continue to see vehicles and other stuff in this category. Can't wait for the Sail Barge.

Black Series - Picking and choosing here, but the line has really been strong lately. All OT stuff, and honestly kind of excited about some of the prequel stuff on the way. Although I'll always be a 3 3/4" guy, this really seems like the line of the moment (and future?)

Basic Line - not sure here, kind of at a crossroads. I'm not against 5 POA, and a lot of the Solo stuff looked great, it just hasn't been as exciting for me lately. I'll wait and see, but I sort of lean toward dedicating the funds to Vintage Collection more. Likely skipping Resistance stuff too, so that might be all we see until Episode 9 stuff.

Marvel Legends

I've been pretty much all-in on these the past few years, but again space is tough after collecting all these years so I'm hoping to get more selective here. I'll always go for Spidey stuff (waves), and likely go for new MCU characters (Captain Marvel, etc.), and otherwise lean towards classic characters.

Other than that, I hope to primarily focus on more vintage toys. I finished the "regular" Star Wars line last year, so I might dabble in the odd POTF figure here and there as I can afford. Otherwise I've shifted focus to GI Joe, and right now I'm trying to complete the figures from the 1985 line. Overall I sold off way more than I bought in 2018, and may do a little more of that in 2019.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Best of Black Series - 2018

End of the year, curious to hear what some of your favorites of the year. Tough to choose for me, with the advent of face printing really upping the game for Hasbro. Any number of figures could be someone's favorite.

Favorite Regular Release Figure

Han Solo (Bespin) - Sentimental for me. Favorite version of Han and maybe the best likeness yet

Lando Calrissian (Skiff Guard or Solo) - incredible likeness on both of these
Grand Moff Tarkin - Great version of a critical character of the original Star Wars
Range Trooper - Minor character, cool look. Nice use of soft goods
Rey (Island Journey) - Face printing makes this look so much better than the original release

Favorite Exclusive

Gamorrean Guard (Target) - much like the TVC version, basically perfect.

Chewbacca (Target) - probably the best Black Series Chewie yet
Princess Leia (Bespin) - great likeness, best we've seen in a Leia (along with this year's Hoth)
Admiral Piett/General Veers (online/Walgreens) - good looks and good idea for an exclusive
Zuckuss (Disney) - nice to finish off the hunters

Favorite Vehicle/Beast

Enfys Nest with Swoop Bike - Just a nice overall set, but pretty interchangeable with.....
Dewback with Sandtrooper - love new beasties, and it looks great

So much goodness this year, and pretty much every character could be interchangeable for "favorite/best". I kind of started running out of room for this line this year, just as they were really hitting their stride, so I've had to rotate the display. Looking forward to more goodness in 2019!

The Vintage Collection / Best of Vintage Collection - 2018

I know many (most?) of us haven't seen much past Wave 1 this year, but with the return of the Vintage Collection this year, what was your favorite (s) of the year? I got lucky and found waves two and three around the time where we got reports of them popping up in Wal-Mart. I've never seen them there or anywhere else since then. Although we had a lot of repacks, I think the new we got was pretty great.

Best Regular Release: Range Trooper

Best Exclusive: Mimban Stormtrooper

Best Repackaged Figure: Hoth Rebel Soldier (any time we can get one of the OT figures out in that original card, that's great in my book)

I don't know that any of the new figures were bad at all, and I'm really looking forward to what is on the way in 2019!

Kind of sad to see them go as well. I can't say I ordered from them a ton anymore, but still a couple of times per year (and definitely at convention exclusive time if I was able). As others said, another avenue lost that just makes collecting more difficult. It is almost becoming an online only (EE, BBTS, etc.) game for me anymore - especially for Vintage Collection. TRU gone, our WM is awful, and Target has had Wave 1 since release day.

Word is breaking that the great Stan Lee has passed away at age 95. So sad, he - along with George Lucas - had a big part in guiding my childhood.

TV-9D9 / Re: Star Wars Resistance - Coming Fall 2018
« on: October 29, 2018, 08:35 PM »
I was just discussing this show with our eleven year old tonight when we were sitting down to watch the newest episode. We both agreed that although it isn't "bad" it just hasn't really grabbed us so far. I know full well that I am not the target audience, and I'm fine with that, but it just seems sort of "meh" so far. I'll stick with it, but it hasn't quite stuck the way Clone Wars and Rebels did (at least for the most part).

Star Wars Resistance / Re: Star Wars Resistance 3.75" Basic Figures
« on: October 8, 2018, 09:25 PM »
It wasn't really mentioned (doesn't seem to be much anymore), but is it basically the next Solo wave (Beckett, Val, etc), then right into these early next year? Seems like there might not be much else out in the "basic" line until Episode 9 then.

Love the Crait Luke, and everything in general looks great. I'm sure it is the idea of outfitting the Assault Tank, but it is surprising how much love Rogue One is getting early on in this Vintage Collection comeback. Tank driver, tank commander, plus repacks of the Death Trooper, Jyn, Cassian, and Scarif Trooper. Not to mention that I believe the upcoming Stormtrooper and Death Star Gunner are considered to be from Rogue One as well. Pretty large percentage when we only get 16-20 figures per year.

I was making a run to ACE today and decided to take a peek inside the Walgreens next door, and lo and behold they had a shelf full o' Veers. Actually the only Star Wars figures they had at all.
