The Vintage Collection / Re: Vintage Collection Wave 17 (2012 Wave 7)
« on: November 6, 2012, 10:31 PM »
Got my BBTS case yesterday.  And I was genuinely surprised to see how small the actual Hasbro case was for this wave.  I've been way too busy to open ANY of these figures, so that's gonna have to wait a little while.  But it's definitely reassuing to finally have these in hand.

I'm not really high on EV-9D9 8D8 resculpts for some reason....not sure why

I think Droid Factory will take care of these next year.

I think at least one of these would make for a decent Droid Factory B-A-F.  And in that case, I'd lean towards EV-9D9 since that droid has some dialogue.

That little Wookiee made me laugh.  Anyone else remember all this nonsense from the Hasbro Q&A a few years ago...

Apparently Lucas has something against Wookiees being Jedi.  There's supposedly an edict for the EU that the only Wookiee Jedi will now and forever be Tyvokka and Lowbacca.  And apparently this extends to Hasbro not making a Tyvokka figure.

I guess LFL changed their mind and Wookiee Jedi are cool again... maybe now we can get our Tyvokka action figure?  :P

I'm definitely happy to see the about face on the whole Wookiees as Jedi thing.  And Gungi was definitely one of the high points of the episode for me.

As for the episode as a whole?  I felt much more positive about this one episode than I did about the 4 part Onderon story arc. And to know that this story arc with the younglings will continue?  This season is starting to look a little better.

Is anyone else as disappointed as I am in the make-up/casting for Kili (and Thorin to a lesser extent)? He is way too human looking. It's as if he was cast that way purely to put in a good looking character. Dwarves aren't supposed to look like that, where is his big beard or bulbous nose?

He looks completely ridiculous when pictured next to the rest of the dwarves.

It honestly doesn't bother me that much.  And from I've seen of all of the dwarfs, it looks as though their facial features become more pronounced as they get older.  That is actually something that happens naturally in people:  their noses and ears continue to grow as they age.  Why wouldn't the same happen to dwarves?

Thorin, Fili and Kili look reasonably alike, and I appreciate the effort there.  The makeup department seems to be trying to make the members of the same dwarf families look as though they're actually related.  And they've done that with the other dwarf families, too.  Gloin looks very much like Gimli from LOTR.  And there are resemblances between Gloin, Oin and Balin.  Again, they're all family.  It's that level of effort in the filmmaking process that I think really make a huge difference in creating a world like Middle Earth.

The TRU stores near me are pretty well stocked up on MTT's.  But then, it seems that TRU stores are starting to get up to holiday stocking levels.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Disney Buys LFL; Announces Episode 7
« on: November 4, 2012, 11:41 PM »
Spielberg would be my first choice.  He speaks George's language, especially since they've worked so closely together in the past.  And his name had actually been tossed about for directing at least one of the prequels before GL decided he would return to the director's chair.

There are certainly some other great directors that might work well with Star Wars.  JJ Abrams has been openly vocal about his love for Star Wars and how much it influenced his own life in filmmaking.  And I've got to say, Jon Favreau might be an interesting guy to take on Star Wars.  After seeing what he was capable of doing with Iron Man and Iron Man 2, my opinion of him changed dramatically.  If not as a director, then perhaps as one of the screen writers.  Joe Johnston has definitely upped his game with his past few films.  [Captain America, especially.

I know there have been wishlist directors thrown around, like Chris Nolan, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson.  I think their work is amazing, and their take on the saga could be really interesting.  But I also get the sense that they all tend to be so involved in the screenwriting and story process of their own films that it might not make any of them the right fit for the Sequel Trilogy.  With Jackson at least, his schedule probably wouldn't permit him to take on the project.

My case from BBTS should be arriving on Monday.  But no indications yet from Amazon about the individual Royal Guard and Republic Trooper figures that I ordered.

I've seen a few of the shrink wrapped vehicle 2-packs in stores.  But so far no Mando shuttles.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Disney Buys LFL; Announces Episode 7

It's interesting news, to say the least.  I haven't been able to fully take in the news since Hurricane Sandy screwed up my internet connection on Monday night.

Part of me is frankly, a bit sad.  George Lucas was the source of this universe that we've all grown to know and love.  He put out three great films in the form of the OT, and was much beloved for doing so.  Episodes 4 - 6 are indellibly etched in the memories of a generation of fans, many of whom were kids when they saw those movies.  And that childhood nostalgia has carried Star Wars on for the past 35 years.

When word came out that a Prequel Trilogy was in the works, there was much rejoicing.  But with the release of Episode I came monumental second guessing of George's vision.  I blame the internet and discussion forums, frankly.  Because all of a sudden everyone thought that a fairly extensive home video collection and an internet connection made them a qualified film critic / director / screenwriter.  The writing was certainly on the wall after this January, 2012 NY Times article.  And I think that all of that fanboy rage  made it easy for George to relent, and sell Lucasfilm, thereby walking away from the haters.

As for the future?  We'll see.  Hearing that GL is involved as a creative consultant is somewhat reassuring.  But it will also be interesting to see what a new generation of filmmakers might bring to a new trilogy.  The list of directors who might take on the new trilogy is sure to be a great topic unto itself.

Where does the story go?  A shift in generations does seem to be in order.  The principle actors from the OT are 30 years older than they were in ROTJ, after all.  Beyond that, Imy only expectation is that we'll see the droids.  They've been there through the whole saga, and it really would not be Star Wars if it weren't seen through the sensor eyes of C-3PO and R2-D2.

I can't see the Islanders doing that.  Especially since they have something of a legacy, if you look back to their dynasty during the 1980's.  Winning 4 Stanley Cups in a row is a legacy you don't walk away from so quickly.

Wow. I'm scared about what they're going to price the At-At at.

I wonder if TRU will up the price on the existing AT-ATs that are currently gathering dust? It would be funny to see the Hoth ATAT at one price and the Endor one for $100 more.

Well, those black boots on the Endor AT-AT Driver are the PERFECT reason to plunk down a lot more cash for that version of the AT-AT, silly!

Collector's Tips / Re: Wall Paint in your collecting room.
« on: October 26, 2012, 05:30 PM »
I haven't even thought about painting.  Will probably just stay with what the house is already done in.  Need to get on the ball about shelving though - that's my issue.  Currently have only 3 Detlofs set up and just tons and tons of boxes....   :-\

Paint is the easiest and cheapest way to really change a room around.  And if you're ambitious, you can try to set up some sort of a theme.  Will it look like a movie set?  That depends on how ambitious you want to get.  But combining decent paint with good lighting will give your collection some pop when you're setting up displays.

I was at the Times Square TRU in NYC earlier today.  No sign of these at the flagship store, either.
