Gentle Giant / Re: Gentle Giant Busts

I'm still waiting on the GG Collector's Club offering for Mara Jade.  If that fails, then I'll consider eBay.

In other mini-bust news, I'm starting to get a little antsy for my case of ROTS Clone Troopers.  I hope they get to my local comic shop soon!

25 look great though and that's a nice sizeable group to head up a Scout Unit attached to an Infantry Unit...  Now we just need a good speederbike for all them.  :(

Hmmm, the speederbike.  It's the mention of that which makes me think that the VTSC Scout Trooper isn't TOTALLY perfect.  Why?  Because a properly proportioned speederbike probably would not work with the VTSC Scout Trooper in it's current state.  The legs are too close together for the Biker Scout to sit on the speeder bike.

That's not to say that the VTSC figure isn't a great starting point for a revised Biker Scout with the speeder bike.  I think all this figure needs are ball jointed hips and it would work perfectly with a speeder bike.  But as things stand now, the Biker Scout looks a little weird on the speeder bikes we have.

This past week was 50+ hours.  But the most in one week?  78 hours IIRC.

Well, the other thing about "Lando in Smuggler's Gear" is that we don't really know what that outfit looked  like.  Sure, we could guess that it exactly like Han's  but I bet Lando would prefer a different cut to his pants.  Myabe baggier pants, with shorter boots like the Rebel Fleet Troopers...

I imagine that there may be Lucasfilm documentation of that.  It seems that photo documentation on the first film was somewhat slipshod, but with every subsequent movie there was greater and greater documentation of characters and costumes for continuity purposes.

I definitely know the shot you're talking about.  It's an iconic shot.  But to me I guess it's just 4 figures facing a background, and that's where it loses it's charm.  I think that Luke getting the robotic hand is just more interesting to me in terms of the sculpts and the potential for details.    It just seems like a personal taste thing.

How would you go about making a Medical Frigate Screen Scene, anyway?

Have Luke on the table getting his new robotic hand, surrounded by 2-1B and Leia.  Luke can have a panel that opens up to the mechanism of his hand.  I think that's probably the most interesting way to offer any of the three characters for that scene.

It's definitely a foolish move to go with a pre-order on a con exclusive through eBay.  Let the event happen and then watch what happens.  I don't think Gentle Giant is going to sell through all 2,000 pieces in Indy.  Especially since they stated in their blog that they'll be offering Mara Jade and the Shock Trooper to collector's club members after Gen Con is over.

Let things play out.  You'll probably save money and you'll be happier in the end.  Whether you get the piece directly from Gentle Giant or from someone who attended the show, you'll do better than what these pre-sells are offering.

I really hope that they make a Bespin Wave in 2008 that consists of:

Luke Skywalker (Medical Frigate)
Princess Leia (Medical Frigate)
Lando Calrissian (Smuggler's Gear)

Why these haven't been made yet I have no idea.  I'd think these figures would be no brainers.  Heck, give us the Luke, Leia, R2, and 3PO in a box set looking out the window from the Frigate.  I'd buy that...

I think the reasoning might be that the Medical Frigate has been kind of an afterthought when it comes to TESB.  Think about it.  There are some great scenes when it comes to Hoth, the Bounty Hunters, Dagobah and Cloud City.  When you think about those, the Medical Frigate scene kind of pales in comparison.  Especially when you consider that there really isn't any action involved with that scene.

But seeing how those main settings have been gone over through the years, the Medical Frigate starts to look like something Hasbro could explore.  I think that Luke, Leia and 2-1B could make for an interesting Screen Scene, but I don't think they would make very compelling figures.  Smuggler Lando would probably be a more interesting Basic Figure in comparison.

But I think that Cloud City is probably the most fertile ground for new characters from TESB.  There's Willrow Hood obviously as well as other Cloud City background citizens (Wiorkettle and Treva Horne anyone!), E-3PO, the various Bespin Guards, new or different Ugnaughts and the possibility of Vintage style Bespin Han Solo, Leia or Luke Skywalker.

Indulge the bitter old purist for a second...  as I said at RS, I can't believe only 4 of the 25 are from the OT.  Just a few years ago, all 25 would have been from the OT.  Does it hurt me that EU figs are produced?  No, not really, but it can be looked at as that many more OT figs that would have been produced instead.  Well, if it keeps the line going, that's fine with me.

That's kind of the way I see it.  We really have gotten so many OT characters at this point that we're really starting to grasp for characters that will be made into figures for the first time.  I think it's also kind of telling that we only had 6 PT characters in the poll (and that's if you include Clone Wars Padme).  I think the line has just gotten so much bigger in the modern era that character selection has become something of an issue.  Just how many first time figures can we get every year?  Especially with lines consisting of 70+ figures a year like this year, or even if the line were to consist of 50 figures?

With that in mind, it seems like the EU is going to be the wave of the future for Star Wars figures.  Because eventually I think we're going to run out of Cantina aliens and Jabba's Palace aliens.

As for the votes for Revan?  I stand by my statement that with KOTOR being one of the hottest games of the past 5 years that there was a big fanbase waiting to be tapped.  As for them having to make a concerted effort to vote for Revan?  I don't think it was a big deal for people to cast their votes.  Actually, ToyFare made it pretty easy to vote.  I think that a lot of the votes for Revan came from people who are more casual collectors and might hang out at board like TNI,, ToyFare's forums and even video game boards.  Just because those people aren't hanging out at dedicated SW boards doesn't mean that their votes should count any less.

Star Wars Universe / Re: luke skywalkers death?

I personally don't think main characters should die in EU, Chewie's death was a pointless thing to do. ::)

From what I understand of the story arc that this happened in, Chewie's death was supposed to raise the stakes in the NJO series.  Throughout all of the EU novels up until then, you always knew that the main characters were going to get out of their respective predicaments.  As a result a good number of the stories left people a little "blah" and there didn't seem to be a reason for them to continue following the storylines of the novels.  In that regard I can understand why Chewbacca was killed off.

Using same Qui-Gon with the Tin Set, They should have used the POTJ Mos Espa Qui-Gon instead.

Not really.  The Qui-Gon in this set is from the EPISODE I line and was referred to as Qui-Gon Jinn - Jedi Master.  The figure in the EPISODE I Tin set is the POTJ Mos Espa Qui-Gon Jinn with a SG Jedi robe.

Well said, i will be passing on the At-At now that i can get the figure in the tin.

The one caveat to keep in mind though is that while both Biker Scouts have the flip-up visor, they ARE different figures.  The POTJ mold Scout Trooper is packed with the AT-AT and the VTSC Scout Trooper is packed with the 30th Anniversary tin.  If you have to have one of every figure, then you might have a bit of a quandry.

The 20 back card is a good place to start.  We've gotten 2 of the figures that were first introduced on the 20 back card in this format.  I think it might be cool to touch on the rest of the 20 back figures in the near future, but not absolutely necessary.

Out of the 20/21 backs that are left:

Walrus Man
Death Star Droid
Power Droid

I'd be down for a new Walrus Man--he could use a re-visiting.  Two of those were just done in Saga, and there might not be a whole lot left to improve on with them.  Snag, DSD and Gonk would be a hard sell for me at this point.  What can be done with them to give them added-value?

It does get tough after a while.  Regarding the two that were just made in the Saga line, move those later in the release schedule and see what can be done.  Possibly knee articulation and ball jointed shoulders for Hammerhead?  As for R5-D4, go with the R4-G9 body with the retractable center leg and more accurate paint apps.

Snaggletooth might be tough since we actually got a decent version of him in the POTJ line and that figure just didn't sell well.  The Gonk is kind of tough too.  What do you do with it?  Especially in order to get people on board with the higher price point?  The only things that come to mind are a better paint job and a new form of leg articulation.  I think a decent Death Star Droid is a possibility.  The quality of protocol droid sculpts has really improved, and I think that could be translated to this droid.

How about the mail-away figures from the vintage line?  I remember a fair ammount of enthusiasm about the mailaways at the time.  The ones I can remember?  Boba Fett, Bossk, 4-LOM (actually Zuckuss), Nien Numb, the Emporer, Admiral Ackbar, etc.  Go in this kind of direction and I think the vintage style line can have some legs.

You mean to make the next mail-away promotions be for actual vintage mail-away characters, and not just ******** characters like Georgetrooper?  Yeah, that I could get behind.  It'd be a nice nod to the vintage line.  Someone not too long ago suggested having a mail-away for a "secret action figure," just like the old days.  I totally love that idea--but the secret wouldn't last too long, in this day and age.

I don't know if it would be good to make these figures mail-aways.  I think it would definitely harken back to those days of mailing your POP's off to Maple Plain, MN, but I think I'd want to see the figures ship on the vintage style card the way the George Trooper does, inside the white mailer box.  First and foremost, I thought they were cool character choices.

Having grown up with the line from it's inception and having the perspective on it that I have now, there are definitely some things I'd like to see in this line.

The 12 Back Figures.  The 12 back figures were the iconic first releases of the line.  With that in mind, I'd really like to see Hasbro address these.  So far we've got the following:
-Luke Skywalker
-Princess Leia
-Han Solo
-Obi-Wan Kenobi
-Darth Vader
-Tusken Raider

So that only leaves the Death Squad Commander and the Jawa from the original 12 backs, right?  Basically I'd like to see those two as soon as possible.

I guess if we were to be real sticklers about it, we have gotten a number of these figures on other cards (Vader on TESB, Stormtrooper on ROTJ).  And there might be some costume differences on Vader.  But I think that's only something you'd address if you were REALLY obsessed with the concept.

Now beyond that?  The 20 back card is a good place to start.  We've gotten 2 of the figures that were first introduced on the 20 back card in this format.  I think it might be cool to touch on the rest of the 20 back figures in the near future, but not absolutely necessary.

As for the rest?  I agree, core characters and army builders are a good direction to go in.  There's definitely some fodder in that respect for this line in The Empire Strikes Back.  But I'd also go so far as to do the Bounty Hunters.  I think they're interesting enough characters to get some consideration.

As for other characters?  How about the mail-away figures from the vintage line?  I remember a fair ammount of enthusiasm about the mailaways at the time.  The ones I can remember?  Boba Fett, Bossk, 4-LOM (actually Zuckuss), Nien Numb, the Emporer, Admiral Ackbar, etc.  Go in this kind of direction and I think the vintage style line can have some legs.
