Pendragon, most EXCELLENT job on Mme Isard!  But you already know I think that.  :)  I hadn't even noticed the interchangeable gloves the first time -- WAY cool touch.

The arms and torso are an Annika, right?  (With some added sculpting to make her outfit more... appropriate to her position, shall I say.)  As is at least part of the head, if I remember correctly...

Very impressive custom all 'round.  I know I've got a long way to go before I match that!

Such a neat thread!  I'm going to send my husband the link to it... no use mincing my words, I suppose!  :D

All that people have mentioned sound like good suggestions, so I've only got a few things to add.  On the photography end of things, there are those neat li'l tiny tripods that one can use for close-up photos (of which we do a lot).  CHEWIE's gift card idea is a good one -- also gift cards/certificates to hobby shop type places like Hobby Lobby or whatever's in town.

On the photonovelling end of things, foamcore and posterboard and other similar things are always good.  As are Playmobil props -- they are JUST the right size.

And, of course, storage containers are always good.  Supremely useful to the customizer, yet completely intelligible to the non-specialist, and none too expensive (which is the drawback to things like tripods and Dremel attachments).  My mom's gotten me one or two.

Hope you  have a great birthday, Brent, and that you get all you want!  :D

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: Phoenix's customs
« on: May 22, 2006, 12:00 PM »
Nice work on these, Phoenix!  I especially like your customz of just "ordinary folks" like Curtis, Gregor, and Rash.  I'm looking forward to how your WIP of Jack will turn out too.  (The photos of figures holding their heads are very cute!)  This Jack seems to have some metallic silver accents in his hair... or is it just the photo?

I've redone the Baron a bit.  He's now got the proper 2/181st red stripes and a gray breastplate, and a black turtleneck to cover the neck gap and long neck.  I've also done a bit of snading and repainting on the head.  Though gosh, even after all the work I put in, it STILL seems to look a heck of a lot like the Bail head... Oh well, you guys can tell me!  :)

Enjoy!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: A few questions
« on: May 19, 2006, 01:04 AM »
Welcome, Spidey, both to the boards and to the wonderful world of customizing!

I agree with Ryan's answers, but have just a few things to add.  First of all, I found out the hard way that Aurra Sing's ball-joinged arms do not pop all the way out of the torso -- the shoulder pegs stayed right where they were, since they were made of a harder plastic.  So, just by way of warning, Aurra Sing is one exception to that rule!

Also, as far as checking figure compatibility, I know that FFURG.com has some lists of that sort, though they're by no means exhaustive.  But Ryan's right that most 1:18 heads out there can be used, with some alteration of course.  I should think the limbs from the XD figures would work out too, since they seemed to be attached to the figure in the same way.

Hope that helps!  Happy customizing, and keep in touch!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Soft Goods patterns.
« on: May 19, 2006, 12:58 AM »
I'm planning on doing Jedi master Kit fisto in clone wars episode 4, I'm going to use a microman body, but his pants are something of a mystery to me. I have no idea of how I'm going to do that small of pants, but I have to make it perfect, "It's my brothers thank God your better after 2 surgeries present"

Ah okay.  If it's a Microman, then that should be all right for pants.  I have patterns for 1:6 man's pants somewhere -- those could just be scaled down.   I'll check.

For skintight clothes on a Microman, there's also Phruby's balloon approach, as exemplified by the Ysanne Isard he's working on now for the group project, visible here.  Of course, Kit Fisto doesn't exactly wear anything skintight... but this is just one other option for Microman/lady clothing.

Thanks for the continued interest & comments, people!

Just a quick (but unfortunately photoless) update on Baron Fel: As per people's much-appreciated input, I have repainted Fel with red stripes and a gray breastplate, and have done a bit of sculpting to his hair and to his turtleneck.  Photos to come tomorrow, if all goes well.

Tykrazen, if I have a spare Lumi in the ol' bodies bin, I'll give that a try.  That sounds like it could work.  The only thing is -- and I'm usually not one to worry about this, but -- the bosom on that figure may not be big enough...

Gregor, thanks for visiting the site!  Glad you liked wha you saw.  I have a 12" male pants pattern around somewhere, which I may be able to scan in and send you -- do keep me posted on your Leon custom.  I'd be glad to help out in whatever way I can.

RollaJedi, about the Gand helmet, I've actually been wondering that myself!  I have heard it called both a mask (implying covering just the face) and a helmet (implying covering whole head), so it's a bit ambiguous.  One piece of evidence for the latter, though, is the strange sort of "collar"-like piece at the back of Zuckuss's head in both 3.75" and 12" figures (see, for example, this image).  That "collar" wouldn't seem to make much sense unless it were part of a helmet.   In any case, though, if it is a helmet, it's one that conforms pretty closely to the natural shape of their heads.  Just a thought -- hope it makes some sense.

Ryan, thanks for posting!  Actually, the two separate chest boxes weren't part of the original plan.  They kind of happened serendipitously.  I already had the box WITH tubes in my fodder bin.  The box WITHOUT tubes, however, I received in trade from Pendragon along with the pilot body.  I hadn't been expecting it -- he just threw it in out of the goodness of his heart, and the tubes were already cut off.  So it was just one of those things!

More to come soon, along with hopefully some new photos of Soontir and maybe... just maybe... something completely different.  :)

Welcome, Glorbes!  Wow, these two are exquisite.  Fantastic sculpting work on both.  I like that you've achieved a sort of "concepty" look that nevertheless is very much in the spirit of SW.

Making SW customs at this scale is so ambitious because there's so little actual SW fodder at this scale -- which makes your work all the more impressive.  Looking forward to seeing more!  :)

Esther,
I love that you've started your own thread.  You should show off more of your customs here and put a link to your website in your signature file!!

There is a link to my website in my signature file, darlin'!

As for Wynssa, I don't know if that PLC Ceremonial Leia would work without a LOT of modification.  The shape of Leia's bodice and Wynssa's are completely different (Wynssa's got the halter top, Leia has a boatneck) -- and we all know from that other Plourr what a klutz I am at dremel sanding!  I'll keep looking around for something, though.  Maybe Oola might work, even... assuminmg I can get my claws on one...

Glassman, thanks for the comments!  I do indeed plan to sand down his neck and generally try to make it look more convincing (as well as add at least red stripes to his uniform).  More on that to come, I hope!

Great work so far, Brent!  I really love the red caped guy on the previous page fighting with Darth Maul.  Do tell us more about how you made him, and what that head is!   And that fabulously scary Ephant Mon-based fellow... jitters!  That is a face I would not want to encounter alone at night...

Great work also on the sets/scenery -- great use of real sand.  (And the funny thing is, it looks perfeectly in scale, even though it is, of course, 1:1 sand!  :D )

Keep up the excellent work -- looking forward to more.

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: What's cook'n? - wip

Commando soup and baby back ribs.

Yes, very cute, Phruby!  What exactly are you casting them in?  To the uninitiated in the ways of casting, it looks almost like that agar stuff one uses for DNA electrophoresis... :)

Oh, those are the baby twins, aren't they... At first I thought they might be Ayy Vida torsos or some such (another sort of "babe," at least to some ;) )  Do you have any particular plans for them at present?

Thanks so much for the comments, everyone!

You've just GOT to do these 2 Finds!

Believe me, I've been wanting to make these two every since I first saw that wedding scene in my copy of Blood and Honor!  The Soontir would be pretty easy -- just stick the Bail head or some such on a repainted Ozzel (anyone got one for trade?  :) ).  Wynnsa/Syal will be a good bit harder.  Perhaps some (heavily repainted) Ayy Vida parts for the bodice?  I'd have to think further about the head, though.

Darth Ennis, I've got tons of older stuff at http://www.findswoman.net! :)  But what the heck, since we're on the topic of Rogue Squadron comic books, I may as well showcase my two versions of Plourr Ilo, the Warrior Princess.  (Don't be afraid to click on the link -- I'm not using Geocities anymore!  :D )

More to come very soon, I hope, especially a BIG 12" custom with TONS of soft goods...

Wow, that balloon bodysuit has really taken shape, Phruby -- and you've put so much work into it.  It definitely looks much more like "one piece" now.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Soft Goods patterns.
« on: May 17, 2006, 10:33 AM »
My FFURG softgoods article has a few patterns attached to it in PDF format, a basic cloak and a basic skirt.  Here's the link:

http://www.ffurg.com/accessories/sewing.htm

Smarty, what sort of figure do you want to make pants for?  I've not made pants at 3.75" scale, and I'm not sure I recommend doing so, because they would probably end up being too bulky for the scale.  (With the exception of things like Slave Leia and Ayy Vida, most SW figures are already wearing something on their legs anyway.)  Now 12", of course, is a different matter...

Hope at least some of this helps!
