Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Customizer's Block???
« on: June 4, 2006, 10:00 AM »
Well if you are going for a Jabim soldier, I'd suggest a crew neck t-shirt (Which can be dremeled from a JP3 Jack Kirby figure) with a XD battle of the bulge trenchcoat over top

How about pimp Vong?  :P

well I'll be late on mine... the parts are mostly cut but I'm... grumble... out of Plastiweld and the hobby shop has it on backorder for the past 2 weeks...  grrrr...  Hopefully Thursday they'll have it.

You don't like the X-wing  ;D

I think it has a great vintage prototype feel ala the At-At Ion Cannon.

other than...?  :P

2 Bib Sculpts and the one from the Clone Wars Jedi 3-pack

I think you  could use an x-wing by itself as the base.  slice out where the astromech is so that it goes right from the cockpit to the tail.  Cut in front of the cockpit and use stryene to build out the front.

Lighting stand for taking pictures

Oooooooooo.... that's a good one.  Now I have to find a new girlfriend :P...

My ex used to hate buying me Star Wars, but she loved buying supplies for customizing.  Of the many gifts she bought me that are still used to this day were:

1) Pepe Wax Pen
2) Badger Air brush
3) Storage Drawers
4) Dental Probes (for sculpting -- easily available at Medical supply stores.)
5) Comic Backing Boards (for printing cardbacks)
6) Ink Jet Catridges

11 of the 12 figures for this set are getting closer to done -- here's a couple teaser pics of where I am.

Front Row:
Luke Skywalker Wayland Final Duel
Ralrra Kashyyk Guard
Noghri Warrior Kashyyk Assault
Clone Stormtrooper (with Removable Helmet)
Leia Organa Solo Kashyyk Assault
Luuke Skywalker (Wayland Duel)

Back Row:
Mara Jade Wayland Final Duel
Death Squad Commander
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Talon Karrde Wayland Assault
Lando Calrissian Wayland Assault

Not Pictured (because not really started yet):  Joruus C'boath

The concept behind this is what would a Thrawn Collection look like if Hasbro decided to realease one.  Figures were chosen based on playability as well as recognition.  Some figures were planned and dropped as I worked through the ideas.  Some that made it as far as parts selection included Han Solo - Wayland Assault, Captain Palleon, Garm Bel Iblis, General Covell.

Most of these still have some work to be done on them, so more detailed pics will surface as I finish them up.

As always, I love suggestion for improvement.

What about the ROTS Luminara Torso for the bodice?  Instead of dremeling you can use an xacto knife to remove the necklace, then add a thin line of epoxy to denote the edge of the fabric.

Not sure about workig with mylar -- but transparencies would work.  It's a variation on a technique used for stage design.

What about the Chap Mei Skeletor clone?  Body shape seems just about right for that.

I like the parts choice on Luke but the hair seems um... bleached.  Actually it kind of reminds me of Mirth from Mage.  Can't wait to see the finished products.

I'm officially baffled -- what is the base of the first one?

Since you all seemed to wnjoy my last post as RS - I thought I'd share my most recent.  I figure I'll be banned in about 2 hours :P

My post from the Dustin for Pres thread:

Dustin and Philip:

When you made the first post on the main page of 'scum, I came on here and raised the concern about the dual messages you were sending by it. I warned that the "commercial" nature of your appeals wasn't going to win any friends, influence people, or get our boy Dustin here elected. Many of your "supporters" here blasted me as being a bitter, jealous person, spiteful of Rebelscum, instead of hearing the considered points I was making. So far, it is looking like I was right.

A "nobody", in terms of the collecting community, is turning in more subsciptions than Dustin. A lot of that appears to be driven by the disdain for how Dustin has been presented. Good politicians know when the tide is against them and adjust to it. Instead you are continuing more of the same and the gap is widening.

There's still a chance for you to step up to the plate, but you are running out of time. From the free product given away by Philip's venture, it is obvious he is supporting you in your efforts. I think it's time you ask Philip to do something noble.

Philip, you've made some small coin off of Star Wars collectors through your endeavors over the past few years. As you have stated time and time again, you run it like a business so you can keep it going. I'd advocate that you start doing what socially responsible businesses do -- give back.

Why not offer to publically donate $10.00 to a charity for every subscription Dustin brings in between now and the end of the contest? (If he manages to bring in another 100 subscriptions -- which would seem to be a stretch -- that's only $1,000 -- a small part of your star wars collection budget for the year.) Have all his supporter sites get the word out. That would be a noble effort rather than the sad joke this is becoming.

The Fan Club SHOULD have done something meaningful with this contest -- something other than crass commercialism. Sadly they didn't. Here's your chance to show what REAL leadership within the collecting community should be.
