Saga '02-'04 / If You Had to Choose
« on: March 12, 2004, 04:03 PM »
Just something I was thinking about this afternoon....although this is a tough question for me, if you had to put away/sell, etc. your modern collection, and could only keep 12 figures, 1 beast/deluxe, 1 small-scale ship, and 1 large ship, which ones would you choose?  Would you go by which figures you think are the best done, your favorite characters, the most iconic characters?  Just curious which ones you would choose for yourself, from POTF2, POTJ, Episode I, or Saga.  I'll leave OTC and VOTC off for now, because I think many of us (including me) would choose some of those VOTC figures, but since they aren't out yet...we'll just leave it at the current releases (even if you don't have them yet, you can go by online pics if you like).  For me, I would probably go by the main characters, or favorites...just if I had to limit my display to this many only.  I'd also go with all OT characters I think, just because they are more appealing to me.

Figures:
1.  POTJ Han Solo - Bespin Capture
2.  Saga Chewbacca - Cloud City Escape
3.  Saga Darth Vader - Masters of the Darkside Repack/Death Star Clash
4.  Saga R2-D2 - Jabba's Sail Barge
5.  Saga Luke Skywalker - Jabba's Palace
6.  POTJ Boba Fett - 300th
7.  POTF2 Commtech Stormtrooper
8.  Saga Yoda - Jedi Master (would rather take one of the upcoming OTC/VOTC versions though)
9.  POTJ Ben "Obi-Wan" Kenobi
10.  A version of C-3PO (I only have the shiny gold POTF2 version, and the Escape Pod one, neither is great...would rather, again, have VOTC version)
11.  POTJ Princess Leia - Bespin Escape
12.  Saga Lando Calrissian - Skiff Guard Disguise

Beast/Deluxe:
1. Saga Ultra Jabba the Hutt or possibly Ultra Wampa

Small-scale Ship:
1. Saga Landspeeder

Large Ship:
1. POTF2 Millennium Falcon

Personally, I don't have all of these items (Lando, Jabba), but if I could only have a small, one shelf display...these are the ones I would choose.  Of course, if we're talking future figures, I'd take probably the entire VOTC collection for the figures, and leave the others the same.  Sorry if this is a stupid question, our servers at work are having troubles, so I've been just sitting and thinking :P.

Nice job Jesse, I really enjoyed the review.  Look forward to more.  This is one of my favorite figures, and one I have been looking forward to for a long time.  I'm definitely on board with your comment that this figure could have used ball-socket elbows.  That would have been really nice.  I like the soft goods cloak too, but I just can't get it to sit just perfect....and can't decide if I want to display him with or without it (for now, with).  The paint job on the head of figure I have leaves a little to be desired though, and the knees seem kind of loose...otherwise, a great figure, and one of my favorites.  Definitely the best ROTJ Luke we have had, and probably the best Hamill likeness we've seen.  Again, good job!

I feel bad that you haven't gotten yours yet either Mikey, that is strange.  Mine had been pending for quite a long time (couple months probably), and I finally e-mailed them to just politely ask what was up...they told me that they would all be shipped this week sometime, and actually my status went from "pending" to "shipped" the next day after I wrote them (last Friday).  I got them on Tuesday I think.  Hopefully yours are on the way soon.

That is funny, nice piece of artwork there :).  I'm starting to think Kobe is going to get off too, and if he is innocent, he should.  The only thing I don't want to see is everyone being all "poor Kobe" even though he was still an admitted adulterer....a label that is overlooked way too often with athletes and celebrities I think.  But, if he didn't rape her, then he should go to jail, I agree.  Hopefully they will find out the real truth in this case, whatever it may be.

Big game between the Wolves and Lakers tonight, both will most likely be at full strength too.  Wish the game was on ESPN or something...but NCAA conference tourneys will put the kibosh on that I think.  Should be a good one, have fun at the game Scott!

Oh yeah, I forgot about Simpsons...add that to my list as well.  Just interested in the line because I like the show so much, always wanted to pick up a Homer and a Ralph...but I know that would lead to more.  So far behind now though, used to peruse the ebay auctions once in awhile for those figures though.

Thanks for posting that Scott.  Season 4 is definitely one of the best, and one I hope to pick up.  I only have season 2 thus far (passed on 1 for now, haven't gotten 3 yet)...but I don't want to skip on season 4.  Really like these season DVD sets, Simpsons is one of the shows that we can watch over and over and still find funny.

CNN only had these listed (as did the radio) I wonder where Conan ranks

That's a good point Scott, I think that Conan is one of the funniest guys on TV.  I find myself laughing every time I watch his show, just his little comments and quips that he rattles off quick, and the way he makes fun of himself.  His style of humor is just funny to me I guess.  Interesting list overall though.....

I just received my Chewie and Luke from Kebco on Wednesday, and I'm happy with these.  I know a lot of people don't care for the Chewbacca, and although I will admit that it is a little "extreme", I do like it.  Like Scott said, in person it looks pretty good I think.  I've been trying to stick to OT-only, since these things do take up a lot of room...but that Clone is pretty cool too.  I think I'll continue with just OT, my display space for them is already full...and I still want to get Bossk and the Tusken later this year.  Hmmm...what to pack away now for more room? :P

The Bullpen / Marvel Legends

I had never seen those before Scott, those are kind of neat.  I was just looking through some listings on ebay for the, there seems to be quite a few of these buggers indeed.  Not something I'm going to collect, but kind of a neat little line.

Other Toy Lines / Other Lines That Have Tempted...
« on: March 12, 2004, 11:58 AM »
Although like the majority of the members here, I am primarily, first and foremost a Star Wars collector...I can honestly say that several lines have tempted me over the past months.  And also, what's funny to me, if it wasn't for the fact that I got into collecting Star Wars again I wouldn't even know about most of these lines ;).  Many come and go, and I end up being glad I didn't get into them too far (money, space, interest)...but a few continue to be tempting to pick up.  I was wondering which other lines have tempted you and why...and why you caved in and bought or gave up and moved on.

Personally, I have been back and forth on a number of lines (as many of you can probably see from my posts), but it pretty much just comes back to Star Wars only.  I think a lot of other lines are really great, and if I had unlimited funds and space, I'd be in for more.  However, the only line (so far) that I have ended up picking up with any regularity is Marvel Legends.  Here's a breakdown of any others that have been/or are tempting:

Marvel Legends: Maybe giving up....Only collect the Spidey/X-Men figures, and not sure if I will continue or not.  I have Beast, Colossus, Gambit, Wolvie, Magneto, as well as a Spidey 2 Spiderman.  I thought I would give up on this line, but I know once I see the likes of Juggernaut, Brown Wolvie, Iceman, etc. I might rethink it.

MOTU: Gave up on this...started waaay too late, and Mattel hasn't done a very good job of running the line anyways.  Only ended up with a He-Man and a Sy-Klone out of it, but would still like to get a Roboto if I ever see one for a decent price.  Otherwise, I'm glad that I ended up not buying into it too heavily.

Batman and/or Justice League:  Gave up... Just because I've always been a Batman fan, I was interested.  Again, run poorly by Mattel it seems, too many variants for my tastes, and I ended up with just a Zipline Batman.  Considering the new animated line when it comes out, have to see what it will offer.  Justice League I am just too far behind on, and think that I would regret it if I ended up buying them all off of ebay or something.

Lord of the Rings: Still interested....these movies are so great, and is really second to only the Original Star Wars with me.  I only have two figures thus far, and would be really far behind, but Toy Biz likes them some re-releases, so I guess I can pretty much pick up at any time.  I wouldn't want anywhere near a complete set, just a handful of my favorites, probably 10 figures or so at most.

Muppets: Still interested...always have been to some extent.  This is another line I probably won't end up getting, because I'm just way far behind.  Plus, I wouldn't want all of them anyways...just ones from the actual "Muppet Show" for the most part.  That was one of my favorite shows as a kid, so I guess nostalgia has a lot to do with it.  Plus, Palisades seems to do a great job with this line.  I'm getting an Indy Kermit for sure (if there are any left), and after that we'll see.  They really put out some amazing product in this line though it seems.

A lot of other lines are pretty cool too, like the Kubrick/Minimate side of things.  Those are still tempting (particularly Star Wars and LOTR), but I don't know if I will end up going for it or not.  The LOTR ones will be hard to pass up once they show up in the stores, but I know if I get them, I will want to pick up the Star Wars Kubricks as well...which would be both difficult and expensive for me.  The main reason I stay away from most of these is the money aspect, although some I end up glad I didn't buy into.  Plus, I don't have a completist attitude with any of the other lines, just what I like.  For now, its just Star Wars first and foremost...and always will be really...but I think I'll be checking out the LOTR stock on this weekend's shopping trip as well....and I still look through the Muppet listings on ebay from time to time (Rowlf was my favorite, but that Tuxedo one is too expensive...and I also like Fozzie).  Again, that Indy Kermit is too cool though :).  Sorry for the long post, down time at work...but I look forward to seeing any of your opinions.

Hall of Justice / Re: Mattel Batman
« on: March 12, 2004, 11:32 AM »
I think I'm actually kind of leaning the same way Morgbug, although I never really got into this line (same with MOTU, a theme with Mattel-handled lines maybe?).  I got the Zipline Bats, and I thought that figure was so outstanding...and I looked into what else was out there.  I've always been a Batman fan, and thought it might be a nice "small" collection to have.  Then after I saw what was out there, the line's problems, and the possibility that it might almost be over...I kind of reconsidered.  I'm thinking about holding out to see what the next animated line has to offer.  I like these comic versions, but I just don't know if the line will last too much longer from the sounds of it.  And, seeing a collector of the line such as yourself give up on it says a lot to me to that maybe it isn't worth it to try to get into.  I'm happy with my Zipline Bats for now :).

Good topic, and I agree with most of the people mentioned here.  I remember when I was younger, I thought Dana Carvey was hilarious, but now he just makes me sad.  I agree, I think he probably still is funny...but just in the wrong places now.  He belongs on something like SNL, but unfortunately probably won't ever go back.

Eddie Murphy...good call on that one.  What happened to this guy?  He was very funny, and still can be (I might be stupid, but I get a kick out of him in Shrek)...but in movies where he actually appears...yikes.  He has had some real stinkers over the recent years.

Robin Williams...I'm not sure about him either.  I think he is probably one of the funniest guys around, or at least was.  His old comedy stuff is really good, but anymore when I see him he just seems a little....too much, for me at least.

Bill Murray...I think he still has it.  I always enjoy his movies (haven't seen LiT though), but he was great in the Royal Tenenbaums (under rated movie I think).  I'll still always remember him mostly from SNL, Caddyshack, and Ghostbusters...but he's done some other good movies too.

Chevy Chase is someone I really enjoy, when he was at his best.  Christmas Vacation is one of our all-time favorite movies...and definitely my favorite of his.  The other "vacation" movies aren't too bad either.  Caddyshack, of course, is great too.  Just happened to see him in Funny Farm on TBS a week or so ago, I haven't seen that movie in a long time.  He's got some other movies that aren't bad, I know a lot of people are fans of Fletch, although I don't know if I have ever seen the whole movie.  Its too bad to hear he is a prick in real life, he's one of those guys you hope are nice in real life.  For some reason I still get a kick out of the video for "Call Me Al" with him and Paul Simon, not sure why, just seems funny to me.

Tim Allen...I agree with what everyone has said.  He is a really funny guy, and I used to watch Home Improvement quite a bit when it started and I was younger.  As the show went on, it got un-funny to me.  Some of his movies are not too bad though, no classics mind you...but watchable, at least to me.

I actually got back into collecting (not counting childhood stuff) a little later than most of you.  For me, it actually started around the time of Phantom Menace, when Star Wars hype was at a big high again.  I worked at a local store (a Pamida for those of you who have heard of them) in our town when I was in college, and remember when the first shipments of Star Wars figures came in.  A co-worker and myself ripped open the boxes a little early, and were able to buy whatever we wanted before we put the stock out.  I thought I would just buy 6 Episode I figures, just to have some, but it went downhill from there.  After that, I discovered the POTF2 line, which I thought had great sculpts compared to vintage (looking at some of them now, I think they look terrible...but at the time, they looked great).  I first picked up a commtech Han and Luke, and then I remember finding the site Brian's Toys and picking up a number of loose vintage and loose POTF2 figures.  I got to 20 or so modern figures, and it was downhill from there.  I believe CollectStarWars was the first collecting site I came across, and was my favorite at the time.  After spending a long time lurking, I eventually joined up and posted every so often.  I also migrated to Rebelscum when that merger took place, and began to post there a little more regularly.  Once Galactic Hunter started up, I was on board there as soon as I could be.  I started to pretty much just post there, because I thought Rebelscum's forums were getting kind of wacky.  Then, I heard more about JediDefender here from Scott, and eventually came over and joined up.  I'm very thankful he told me about it, because this is my favorite community....and probably actually the only one where I have actually gotten to know some of you as friends, and by name.  I now post mainly here, and occasionally at GH (but the traffic is low there at times).  I have posted the occasional reply over at Rebelscum too, but probably less than 10 times since I joined up here.

To be honest, I kind of stayed away from posting at first...because I didn't want to be one of "those guys".  I was pretty uneducated on the whole forum/board thing at the time, and now I have really embraced it.  It is a great way to meet people with common interests, and it is fun to chat about it.  I have met some great people through these boards too, and I think sometimes it is just nice to know that someone else out there is "like me".  None of my friends (high school or college) collect anything like this (toys, movie stuff, etc.)...so it is a little harder to talk to them about it.  They think its neat when they see it, but most of them would have no clue about most of the lines, characters, figures, etc. that I would talk about.  And, to be honest, I always think that some of them probably think it is silly....but oh well, its my only hobby so what else am I going to spend that expendable income on? :P  Overall though, I don't think I'm a snob.....I do wonder sometimes when I see people in the aisles if they belong to one of the online communities, but I don't think I would ever have the guts to go up and ask them.  Honestly, I don't know how a person could really collect a line anymore these days without some online news.  With the way things sell, don't show up, or have chase figures, etc., I don't think I would even know what is out or coming out without some sort of news source.  Its funny thinking back to buying vintage figures when I was a kid, I didn't have any idea what was coming out or when, you just went to the store and saw the figure and "cool, I want that".  Of course back then, most things weren't hard to find it seemed.  The only snobbish way I think I am is that I maybe have a little bit of a preference to the communities here and at Galactic Hunter (which is much of the same people).  Particularly here, I have never met so many helpful people in a community...it seems like everyone here is looking out for one another, and that is nice.  There are so many nice people here, and it is a great community to be a part of.  I thank all of you for making it that way, and keeping it that way.

The letter is a good idea.  I really hope that those of you who got your orders in yesterday morning are able to get everything you wanted.  I personally was not able to get my order in, and I'm really hoping that there are still some Adventure Kermits left whenever they come back online, but its only fair that those who ordered their stuff first yesterday have that opportunity first again as well.  On that subject....does anyone know when the heck they are coming back online?  You would think they would be working 'round the clock to fix whatever bug there was...I was kind of surprised it wasn't back up and running this morning....but then again, I wasn't surprised too I guess :P.
