So, does this mean you're going to be the JD equivalent of Bettman? Oh, this is going to be a problem... ;D:-*

Where the hell'd you learn to count, Brent? ::)
By the way, SLC, what is your real name? Us old guys get forgetful. Hell, somedays I forget my own name. :P
Ryan. I put my name under my avatar cause I wasn't sure what else to put there.
PM Jamie (jjks) cause I'm sure he'd love to join the league.
Glad to see they are finally letting you sign up. Have you created the league yet Brent?
I signed up but it's not showing up in my "my teams" list - could someone see if my team is showing up in there and let me know so I can try again if I need to?
Roster Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, G, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR
League starts 05 October. I'd like to have a week to input the teams, so the draft needs to be done by around 28 September or so. The football draft has been slow, looking like it will need three weeks to finish. I don't mind the speed like that, so we should start the draft around 07 September. Is this reasonable?
I'd say 1 point per category is fine (and I like 3 points per SHO - I don't think the goalie should be the most important player for points). The only stats I've ever tracked during hockey pools is G + A, so adding a few more should be fun.
Roster Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, G, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR
By the way, what does BN stand for (back-up player?)?
Don't worry Jesse, if you exceed the 12 hour draft rule, we'll pick for you. First guy up is Domi.

Well then I propose we get 1 point for every penalty minute. :P
As for the live draft on yahoo, it wouldn't bother me and would make it very quick. But I do understand Rob's point. I sure wouldn't have liked it for football or baseball.
What do you guys think of the +/- category being worth 0.5 point instead of 1 point? I kinda think it should have a little less impact than the actual goals and assists.
All in favor of a simple scoring format
(G = 1; A = 1; goalie win = 1; goalie shutout = 3) say "aye".
Ok then, 24th.
As a first time Fantasy Hockey participant, I'm going to abstain from voting.
JesseV = ****** up Saskatchewanian
I sent the names of the participants to Dale. He'll be picking the order for the draft and posting it in this thread. Don't ever trust a Canadian ;)
The football mag I nailed has been a godsend. The stats have stayed pretty much the same from what I can tell, and I have a very decent team this year.

Not sure when I could be available for a live draft, but it could work on the right date. Season doesn't start until October right? So we could do it sometime at the end of Sept
Is Free Agency over? Are people still signing with teams?

So, let's vote again:
1. Yahoo one night mad house draft
2. Brent's getting older by the day slowly JD online draft
...I will be in Cali with no internet access from September 3rd to September 7th. :-\
OK, so after writing that, I want to be sure I understand this. We are supposed to have 2 each of C, LW, RW, G and 4 D "active" at any one time, right? So, those 4 extra BN players could actually be any position?
As an aside, I've had a hard time finding any publications for fantasy pools lately regarding hockey. I think the lockout might have had an impact :P
Please list conflict dates for me as best you can:
Jeff Sept 3-7
Scott/Brent Sept 8 :P
Jesse: Aug 25-29, Sept 6-12 ::)
Ryan - none major, schedule posted
Brent - Monday night no
Could we plan on blasting a few rounds on the 24th? 9 PM board time?
Friday night I cannot do it, due to work schedual. That's fine Kevin, the 24th is tomorrow, a Wednesday.
Kevin
Mikey and Kevin don't need sleep anyway. And 9 pm would work better for me as well.
Still working on 24th, 9 PM central (10 board time), 2 minutes per pick (or thereabouts). 3-5 rounds?
In:
Brent
Scott
Jeff
A going away party for less than a week long trip? ::)
Ok, I'm going to propose the following:
Live Yahoo draft.
Between 26-30 September.
I'll schedule a time, likely around 9-10 Eastern.
If you're there, great, you have 90 seconds to make a pick. If you're not able to be there the computer picks for you.
...
I'm still open to a draft here at JD but I'll want to start it sooner than later to give Scott some time to be able to check in and draft on occasion for himself. We do have a TON of time to draft here.
Draft Type: Live Draft
Draft Time: Sat Sep 24 9:15pm EDT
Some of us old folks don't. We tuck our kids in, our spouses get tired and we drink. Alone. :PHey! That sounds familiar :P :-[ :'(
:'(
Well nothing's horribly set in stone Jason. I'm leaning towards a Sunday night at this point, won't generally interfere with anyone's party plans :'( and shouldn't interfere with anyone's work schedule.
I hate you all.
I just thought you should know that.
I'm thinking more and more we should just stick with the old fashioned post here when you are ready type draft since it seems to be impossible to find a day/time that can accomodate 10 guys from 2 different countries/4 time zones... :-\
If we do a board draft, just don't start it soon (and by soon, I mean tomorrow). I'm undecided on who to pick with the first pick. I tried to find some fantasy hockey mags, but like Brent already mentioned, they ain't out yet.
Fine by me. Mikey gets to decide when it starts. :P
Let's rock!
Hey Mikey, want to trade your pick for a rare Mas Amedda or Bail Organa figure? :P
(Will this work like Football where the end of the first round picks first in the second round? (not that it makes any difference to the guys in the middle of the round...)
Goaltender wins 1 pt (we could make it two for win, -1 for a loss :P)
And here I was thinking that Kevin was just being funny with that team name...
Change made...
Don't mind me...
I'm going to take a chance on the new kid: Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh
This will either be a really smart move or the dumbest move all draft. Time will tell.
I called Jamie and left him a message about him being up for the next 2 picks.
Well holy **** :o You're right Jesse, either you're a genius or a flipping moron. We'll see with time. I thought he'd last until round five or so.
Well holy **** :o You're right Jesse, either you're a genius or a flipping moron. We'll see with time. I thought he'd last until round five or so.
I won't complain about his pick, it dropped Thornton in my lap. ;D

As a huge Bruin fan, you have no idea how hard that decision was ... :'(
Well he is the next Wayne Gretsky you know... :-X
You're a B's fan and you picked an unproven kid over Thornton??? Wow.
As you can see, I like to live dangerously. ;D
You already have a backup goalie I think. Haven't checked, but you may be able to play only one at a time. It's a default setting I believe.
As for Jesse's pick, I'd say a lot hinges on Lemieux's health this year for Crosby, so you and Jason look fairly linked together at this point. Hope you kids get along :P
If they call the game the way they say they are going to, Super Mario will go off and I'm sure Crosby will put up some good numbers, but I wouldn't have grabbed him in the 1st round.
Sounds ultimatley fair, Brent. You could leave that last draft round out and let us all scramble and trade over free agency.
So as it looks right now, I can only start one goalie per night? It doesn't look that way on the team page...looks like two per night.
Kevin
As I said, I'm gone for a while.
Joe Sakic, C. From the Co, Avalanche.

ps.
The Avs suck. :-*
Who BTW do not suck, they are better than the Wild anyday.
What the hell kind of name is Wild anyways?
p.ps.
The Canucks suck too (I meant the hockey team... but it usually holds true for the rest too) :-*
You're not Canadian, you're Sakatch..., Sodbus...., Gappe..., ah, never mind.
The first Defenseman of the draft taken is:
Sergei Gonchar, Pit
Paul Kariya, LW Nashville. Ex-Av. :P
Well, I'd been hoping to avoid picking players off the same team, but since Daniel Alfredsson, OTT, WR is still on the board in the third, I'll take him.
Has anyone found a good fantasy hockey guide online? I'd like to make a checklist but can't find one.
I'll be around and Jamie told me to call him when he's up. Just hope Jeff picks soon.
Can't believe someone stole Kariya from me. Not a happy camper >:(
Missed some rounds there Brent. I had it laid out until round 6.

Uh, dumbass, I have the keys to this league. You might want to be more selective in where you mock me. Lest you find yourself with a roster comprised of:
Jason Allison
Eric Lindros
Tie Domi
Scott Lachance
and a host of other notables. :-*
Well, that's sort of cool, but I assure you, Vinny never would have made it back to you.

Re: Datsyuk: I agree Jason. I still think he's a very good player and one that's going to have to seriously pick it up. I love Yzerman as much as any hockey fan but methinks he maybe should have retired. :-\
It's almost like you're a wing nut or something :-*
BTW, I'm eyeing up another Wing for later on :P
I'm about to be away from a PC for the next 4 hours, and would PM someone my picks, but I don't have a clue who I'm going after next.
Apologies in advance for grinding this to a halt.
On Jason's Fantasy Football request, I'm also in the league, and so in TN Daniel if that's further enticement to humor us and sign up!
I'm sitting here with my next 2 picks ready to go and can't do a thing.

And I don't know how much longer I'll be around. I may send a pick to someone so Idon't hold things up since I have to head out for a dinner thing soon. :-\
Dammit.

Whaddya all say I just make picks for everyone? You guys trust me, right? :P
Depending on who Jamie and Jason pick, I might have enough for Jeff.
Jesse's Klippers select:
Ryan Smyth, LW, Edm
I'll be back with Scott's in a moment.
I wanted Domi. >:(
Sadly, I'll be around all weekend. 12 hr shift today, 10 hr Saturday, 8 hr Sunday.
Given it's a long weekend, we'll probably have a pretty low number of picks made. I'd be happy if people check in as best they can but I sure can't be disappointed with the way it's gone to this point.
I will be in Cali with no internet access from September 3rd to September 7th. :-\

Jesse leaves again on us at some point too relatively soon. Would be nice to knock off a couple of rounds today/tonight but whatever.
Sorry it took so long, I've been in class and I tend to sleep in until about noon, get ready then leave. :P
I think we're doing pretty damn good. Nearly 7 rounds in less than a week. Those football pool guys must be slow. :-*
I guess Scott is still busy... :'(
Jeff should just call his dumb ass on the phone to get the show movin' along again.
Oh, and I'll take Gretzky, if no one's chosen him yet. Thanks.
:-*
Waiting on a drunk punk.

I think he passed out again. ;)
Mark Recchi, Pit, LW
Amazed to see both of those guys available at this stage in the game.
The Klippers are up....
I'm heading out for a while and I'll update the list later tonight. Scotch to the left of me...
Mike Ribeiro LW, Montreal
Uh, here's a bit of an odd question and I don't quite know how to resolve stuff like this:
I was matching my list here in the thread with the list in The Hockey News and it didn't take long to find a discrepancy:
On the Yahoo list, Mario Lemieux is listed as a Center. In THN he's listed as playing the left wing. I have no idea what to do with that, if anything :-\
There's no override - but if you feel that he should be listed as something else - I think there is a way you can send an email challenging his designation.
I think the THN listing of Lemieux as a LW is a typo perhaps.
Well, Kevin was here but decided against picking, I suppose. No real rush though, once we Jeff we're stalled until Wednesday.
Adrian Aucoin, D, CHI
Being a Bruins fan, out of principle I cannot select a Montreal player. I just cannot. :(
I also did not take Vokoun because I didn't want to stab one of my best friends in the back.
Dammit!!! You won't like this either Brent:

I also did not take Vokoun because I didn't want to stab one of my best friends in the back. As a result, I will round out my goalie core and select...
Robert Esche - G, PHI
I'm guessing no one will complain if I cheat and snag a free agent before I tell the rest of you that free agency is open :P
I'm guessing no one will complain if I cheat and snag a free agent before I tell the rest of you that free agency is open :P
Um, I'm not really sure how that affects my upcoming picks. Does that mean we can select unsigned players (but couldn't before)?
??? ???

Gracias to those of you that left Vokoun for me. Now the only one of you I have to hate is Ryan for taking Kariya. :P

Still waiting on Ryan.
Thanks Matt. I just sort of posted in the thread to get his attention. He knew he was up last night, but he had an exam to study for. Good reason.
Dick Tarnstrom D, Pittsburgh.
Kovalchuk sounds more and more like he won't be in Atlanta this year.
Goalies:
tie = 1 point

I have a question about this, since there are no longer going to be ties because of the shootouts, does a tie mean an OT loss?
Hung over (again), and stumbling through work. Picks coming shortly...

OK,
I deleted the ******** from this thread, now let's just keep going and I'll remind everyone to try to act like you like each other...
:-*
Sergei Samsonov, Bos, LW
It's a bit of a gamble due to his contract negotiations but
Nick Boynton D, Boston.
Sergei Samsonov, Bos, LW
Hoping he'd make it to me for one of my subs. I'll just go with my next choice.
Hows about Pavol Demitra, C, LA
Uh, hello?
Uh, hello?
I'm guessing Kevin's at work and that's fine, I'd just been hoping to rattle off another round. This place gets sorta quiet on the weekend.
Officially tired of this draft now >:(
Marc Denis, Col, G for the IceMuskies please. On to Rob...
Ok, officially bored here. Last round will be free agency style. I'll give everyone at least 24 hours notice (here) to fill out the last roster spot.
I need to get this draft entered because I've another starting shortly. So only Kevin, myself and Mikey have a position left to pick. Call it an executive decision. ;)
As to exactly when free agency will start, that will be after I enter all the players in and once I activate the league. I won't activate the league though until I've given at least 24 hours notice. Though to piss off you young guys with social lives, it'll probably occur around 10 pm CST on a Friday or Saturday night :P
I don't agree w/ the free agency thing, but oh well.
Out on newstands today: The Hockey News: 2005-06 Ultimate Pool Guide ::)
I'll make the draft live tomorrow at noon board time.
I'll make the draft live tomorrow at noon board time.
Does board time = EST? This fancy dancy computer talk confuses me.
That was the time I thought would best screw over everyone. Lunch for the easterners, actual real work time for those of us central and too damn early for anyone westerly. As for me, I've already selected someone from everyone's team and replaced them with one of my picks that I wasn't happy with. I thank you all for your generous contributions.
Most rookies will be unavailable until they have played in at least one professional game. Rookies currently available appear via special agreement.
I think Vanek is a rookiee as well
That leaves only Hamhuis, who I know played in the previous season.
Forgive my ignorance, but to add my final bench player, do I just click "Add" next to the player's name?
Are we supposed to be able to see our teams yet? I can't see mine but the last few posts make it sound like some people have been making roster moves.
(Sorry if this was already answered, I haven't read everything)
You need to go to tomorrow to see your players, they don't show up for today's date. Damn near crapped my drawers ::)
I'm in Florida during the first week of November
Be afraid, I'll be there this weekend too. :P
Ummm I have what seems to be a really stupid question but how does the scoring work do we just go head to head with someone each week, or is the scoring cumalative over the season?
Buisness or pleasure?
Kevin
Doing our work draft in 15 minutes. You should hear the complaints. I sent out notification twice in the past week and all manner of I don't have time; it's too soon; I haven't prepared yet; can we do it another day are rolling about ::) Sorry, no sympathy from me.
This one's for money too. If they haven't signed up for the league by Sunday night, they're booted and their team becomes free agents. If they haven't paid by October 5th, I suspend their team until they do pay. One night, two nights, ... ;D
The second we put money in there, it ain't for fun. I want to kick all your respective asses.
Any idea what to do about Hamhuis? This is insane that he still isn't listed anywhere.
What's a roster?
Is that the Candian definition of a roster or the American definition?
How cute, you two are still attached at the hip.
I think I set somthing up wrong on my roster. Does it look alright? :-\
Kevin
And in other news Jeff's team absolutely blew up tonight.
I kicked Biron to the curb (goalie for Buffalo) because I thought he was supposed to be their starter. Apparently not.
Amazingly, Olaf Kolzig (Washington) was still available. I think I got very lucky finding him.

I'd hardly say that after the last 2 nights.
Iginla just got an assist after they reviewed that goal.
Wow - 9 points for Ryan, 8 for Jamie and 7 for Scott tonight - nice job guys. It makes my 3 points look a little sad. Look out Jeff, there's a few guys on your tail! ;)
I only had two players as well for a whopping 1 point. I did get all excited though when I saw that Montreal won in a shut-out, only to find that Theodore was on the bench. >:(

I am perfectly fine with them the way they are...
Don't get too comfortable with a big lead, every slot gets only 82 games.

So there really isn't an advantage to making a whole bunch of changes daily to get different players that are actually playing, since it could mean less games available for points at the end of the season? If so, that's really good to know (although, I've only made a few changes so far).

Bottom right of your "My Team" page is a link called "Maximum Games Played".
That will tell you how many games you have left - you can plug all your guys in every night if you want, but at the end of the year you'll run out of games and ALL of your players will have to sit on the bench.
If you can just plug in all of your backups every night that your starters aren't playing, then it takes away any skill involved in looking for favorable match-ups and knowing who to start on a given night versus a given opponent.
It definitely takes more skill this way - even though in Hockey that puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.
It's just plain stupid.
It's just plain stupid.
Not stupid, strategic. Just keep an eye on your Maximum Games Played at the lower right hand corner of your team screen (like Rob kindly pointed out), and it shouldn't be a big deal.
Again, I'm no fan at all of the capping. I just wish we'd known ahead of time so we could discuss it like we discussed the scoring. I would have been very vocal against it.

That's how it's supposed to be. Why have backups then if you can't use them? They aren't just there in case someone gets injured. You try to pick guys later in the draft that can actually help your team, not sit there until someone is hurt.
Again, this is an all points league so obviously it's a sprint to the finish line, out score the other guy each and everyday league. What's the point in capping the positions? I've never liked leagues like that. It's just plain stupid.

My point was that you CAN use your back-ups, if you feel like on some given night they're playing against a team that makes them more likely to score a goal than the other guy. I've got an extra goalie and I try to put the two that are most likely to win in on any given night. Which is strategy.
I wouldn't say strategic because again, the only "strategy" involved is basically not using up your games early and waiting for people to burn their games and then overtaking them at the end.I disagree. Were I Jeff, I'd be screaming as many guys into the lineup as I could at this point in the season. The only guaranteed thing is that guys are going to cool off while other guys are going to heat up.
I think the cap serves to equalize the teams. For guys not paying attention, it allows them a chance to come back later in the year.
I think the cap is fair. As Rob said, it's strategic playing, not just drafting well. I saw we keep the cap. Maybe we can set it higher, but a total removal seems to cheapen the game.
Kevin
Because we didn't draft under those rules. When we drafted, the league settings page said 82 game cap per position.
Simple as that.
Kevin
It's far less strategic and more based on the whims of the schedules and the like. This is a good point though the counter is that you would have to adjust your personal roster to take advantage of it. Of course this is where the drafting strategy argument then comes in.
The number of transactions can be limited. The other solution has already been mentioned: a longer waiver, say 4 days. That would prevent flipping players on a daily basis. Plus you may end up losing a guy on waivers or may not get a guy you request because of the priority of the waiver wire.
How on earth would opening up the thing to unlimited games increase the amount of strategy involved? It reduces the amount of strategy - you just plug everyone that you can in every night.
It also could screw a lot of stuff up - say you've got a bunch of Right Wingers, and none of them play on a given day - you're just out of luck - but if someone else's team just happens to have a favorable schedule where their Right Wingers don't have coinciding days off - advantage them.
It's far less strategic and more based on the whims of the schedules and the like.
Besides, as always - we didn't draft with this in mind. I'd have drafted somewhat differently if we were doing this. I might not have drafted to fill starting spots in the middle rounds.
This is a lot like when you wanted to add a flex position to the Football league last year part way into the season. At first I didn't see what the big deal was, figuring - hey we all drafted the same so the rule change would affect everyone the same but it doesn't work that way - people might have drafted 3 top tier RB's with their first three picks that year knowing they could plug an extra one in. It's like re-dealing a poker hand after the bets are on the table and if we were playing for money (thank God we're not) everyone would be furious at the mere suggestion of something like this.
You're right. If none of your RWs are playing one night and all 3 of mine are you are at the mercy of the schedule. Again, how is that any different than it is right now? What does that have to do with the cap? Again we aren't adding starting spots.
Congrats to Mikey for a 13 point jump last night. That's got to be a record so far for a single night.

Because as it stands right now, I've got plenty of days in the future to make up for situations like that - if there is no cap, and such a scenario occurs, then that's the end of it, so-and-so got extra games.
I'm very much against removing the cap so far after the draft. I'm more open to the idea of raising it a little bit to give Back-ups added worth - then there actually is some added strategy involved if you only get a few changes to use so and so and you need to use those extra games wisely.
Congrats to Mikey for a 13 point jump last night. That's got to be a record so far for a single night.
I believe Jeff scored 19 one night.
Raising the cap by 18 games allows you to get some Bench players in - hence, extra games. Pretty simple.
Whatever validation you may feel you have gotten from me, you're entire argument for getting rid of the cap is invalidated by the fact that you're bringing up what is a subsantial change 2 weeks into the season. This is a pre-draft conversation, plain and simple. Like I said before, if we had any money on this and you suggested a change of this magnitude, the conversation wouldn't even be entertained.
Last time I counted, the voting was 3-2 to leave it the way it was with Jeff saying he could go either way.
I'm for the Max game limit...
I'm also sick of people bitching about the rules after the game starts

I'm sick of rules not being clearly laid out in their entirety for all to see before we start anything. I'm not blaming Brent mind you, but we spent so much time discussing the rules and there was no mention of a max on games.

I'm sorry to interrupt here, and not to take sides, but I must add that this rule about max games was clearly posted before the draft on the league settings page at yahoo. There is no "if"s, "and"s, or "but"s about it. Posted for all to see, 24/7, right on the league settings page.
Hope that helps.
Okay back to Seahawks/Texans on ESPN.
:D
...So you didn't check to make sure everything was the way you wanted it, before Brent finalized it? :-X
Kevin
I'll ask you again Kev, why have 4 centerman if you have a max on games you can use? :-X
My entire point, obviously missed on those who would rather just be haters and talk ****, is why do we have 5 bench spots if we can't even utilize them? Why did we fill up our rosters if there is such a small max on games? We all asked for more guys on our teams, and I did so thinking we'd actually be able to use them. It truly is beyond me why we have such a small cap, and why we have a cap at all, if our benches are so deep. Basically, we are hoarding guys that others can't pick up to help their own teams with the way we have it now. If you can expand the cap # Brent, please do so. Otherwise I suggest shrinking the rosters. This is just like football last year. Huge rosters, nearly every decent player in the NFL taken and put on someone's roster and the majority of those guys couldn't be used. Someone explain that rationale, please.

Injuries, backups, favorable play rotation.
It's called strategic playing. Do YOU want to give up all your bench players? Why not delcare them all free agents as a gesture of how devoted to this campaign of mid-season rule change you have going here? First the flex position, and now this fiasco.
It seems when you get in a leauge rut, you want everyone to change for you. You really should read over the specifications, and leauge rules, before you sign up for another leauge. It's getting rediculous. Go take a nap or somthing.
Kevin
If you spent as much time shaping up a better team, you might stand a chance of winning the league.
If the games stay capped at what they are at, I vote we shrink the rosters down. No point in having a deep bench if you can't use it.
I'm sick of rules not being clearly laid out in their entirety for all to see before we start anything.
Here are the settings as they currently are. These are all subject to discussion/vote/whatever. I like it simple but I can change.

Another day goes by and my team clings to it's 1st place position despite constant threats from the #2-5 guys.
The points are piling up, but my little squad keeps finding a way to keep me on top... 8)
I've got NO players playing today. I expect to drop a few spots by the end of the evening. :-[
I'm on your tail, only a point behind! And with 4 players playing tonight, here's hoping I can knock the Minnesotan out of first. :P
Uh-oh. The Canuck is in first now. You guys are supposed to be good at hockey, it is an American sport. We stole it fair and square. :P
Oh you wishy-washy ******* make me crazy :P

What the hell, my opinion doesn't count!!?? >:(
The team of the night last night? Team Dressel gets 8 points to get back into the mix - congrats Kev.
Finally got to see a shootout tonite in the Preds game. I bet they are hoping all their games go to a shootout.
Ohmygod guys, if you're going to whine about missing points because you had to leave a guy on the bench I'll can the ******* league right now. Honestly, how many TD's have I left on the bench because I couldn't play all my wide receivers this year (the answer is six, btw). Same ******* thing in hockey.
Here's a suggestion, I tolerated all the discussion with its inherent lack of maturity. The decision is made. Grow up or **** off. Ok?

Easy there Brent. Jamie and I talked on the phone not long ago 2nite and we both agreed that we didn't see the max game cap at the beginning of the season and like 2 of the "no" votes were actual "I could go either way" votes, so you gotta know people aren't sold on this max game cap. Like I said via PM, I think those voting "no" don't fully grasp what they are voting against. They'll see in the long run when they run out of games early. Despite what others say, there is no strategy involved with a game cap. You may think a guy could go off on one team that nite and that another guy won't against his opponent and be completely wrong. It's a guessing game, not strategy. We should have done a head-to-head league because then you can utilize all your players. Too late now, but I for one won't stop voicing my frustration if I have more nites like 2nite.

Stategy or not, it's the rules we're playing under. It's been discussed to death, and voted on. There isn't going to be a change.
If you have displeasure to express, save it for the creation of next year's league and in the meantime, try to enjoy yourself. There's nothing riding on this league. It's just for fun.
Wow, that took a long time ::)

Fair enough, just keep it civil because everyone's sick of the rancor in these threads.
I think I should mention that I had Demitra on bench all season - I went ahead and started him tonight because I thought he might have a good game - bam, 2 points. Tomorrow he'll be back on my bench.
That's strategy, no matter what you think.
And if you're going to be mad if you lose the league by the amount of points on your bench, make sure you add up everyone else's bench points too. Then sit back and try to get your best matchups in your line up each night. Stategize.
[Sorry dude, it ain't strategy. If you were able to use him, you would. You've kept him on your bench because he is a C/RW and you already have Iginla, Amonte and Alfredsson at RW and Richards and Jokinen at C. You've had him on the bench because you can't use him. There's no strategy involved in not being able to utilize your team to it's fullest.

Dude, yes that is stategy. By playing Demitra tonight, I'll have to find a different night to SIT Iginla or Alfredsson - and I'll look for a night where they go up against a good goalie/defensive team on the road - strategy.
Fine. Just realize that if you want a league without a cap, it will have to be elsewhere than Yahoo. The maximum number of games is 100. You can't set it higher, at least not in a points league.

No, that's not strategy. That's being handcuffed by the rules. The new NHL is far too unpredictable.

No, that's stategizing within the rules - surely you at least understand what I'm getting at right?
And you not seeing a clearly posted rule until later and assuming that it was a certain way because some other league is, isn't grounds for changing the rule later.
BTW, did your Clone 5pak reach you yet?
And you're right, it isn't grounds for changing it but there is nothing wrong with pointing out an obvious flaw in the rules and suggesting a change is there?
BTW, did your Clone 5pak reach you yet?
No, but that's just because I haven't been at my workplace lately I suspect. It's probably waiting for me, but I won't be down there until Tuesday next week because of meetings.
Is there another online site to run without a game cap? Or does Yahoo rotisserie run that way?
And you're right, it isn't grounds for changing it but there is nothing wrong with pointing out an obvious flaw in the rules and suggesting a change is there?
No, there's nothing wrong with that - but at this point certainly you must know that you've accomplished that goal and we're going in circles.
Yeah, I had to a leave a right winger out tonite and chose JP Dumont - cost me a G and A. :(

How was your 1-day reign in first, Saskatch? :P
Can anyone explain to me how the Yahoo player rankings work?!
Can anyone explain to me how the Yahoo player rankings work?!
How is the NHL about rescheduling postponed games? Two of my guys aren't playing tonight because of Hurricane Wilma and I'm wondering if they just scrap the game, or do double headers (which I doubt) or set it up where they play on some day that they both would have had off?
How was your 1-day reign in first, Saskatch? :P
Sweet. I'll be back though. ;D
I screwed up today. For some bizzare reason I thought that Belfour was up against Philadelphia and not Boston - so, figuring that Philly is the top goal scoring team in the league, I sit Belfour. Next thing I know he has a 5-4 win over Boston.
Whoops.
Figures I had Gonchar on the bench ::)

What?

What?
Gonchar had 3 points last night and Brent didn't start him.
Your 19 points is tied for most in a day with the 19 that Jeff had early in the season.
Saturday, Oct 8th -
3A - J. Thornton (Bos - C)
2A - S. Koivu (Mon - C)
3A - M. Recchi (Pit - LW,RW)
1G, 1A -M. Hossa (Atl - RW)
1G, 2A - W. Redden (Ott - D)
1G, 1A - B. Stuart (SJ - D)
1W - E. Nabokov (SJ - G)
1W, 1SO - D. Hasek (Ott - G)
Forwards = 15 pts
Goalies = 5 pts
Total = 20pts ;D
Sorry boss, my bad.
You just want until I take pictures after the white Evo set hits and I'm able to find 50 of the 501st troopers too.
You kidding? I should have those pictures before the new year. :)
Daniel Alfredsson is my hero.
Scratch that - 8 points down... :(
I'm not sure if this has come up yet but, my goalie (Aebischer) had an assist tonight, will that count as a point?
Scratch that - 8 points down... :(
And stay down... beeeotch. 8)
Whoops, benched Demitra because I'm a game or two over the pace at the Center position and he drops in 3 assists in the first two periods.

I might be interested in Samsonov depending on what you're asking.
Make me a trade offer in Yahoo if you're interested.
What happens if there is a tie at the end of the season? What's the tie-breaker?
Congratulations to Jeff, who not only caught up to my team, but is about to jump way out in front once the Shutout points for Fernandez show up.
I need a goalie if someone has one available.
Damn you Jeff, every time I catch up to you my team stumbles and your's jumps right back out infront.
I'm hoping to see some production from my team because I'm on the negative side of total games expected to be played. Basically, I can play everyone every night for a while (except my centers, I'm actually too far ahead).
Proposal sent.
News from yahoo today was that surgery would have put him out until the end of February but that he was NOT going to have surgery and that he could be back in a couple of weeks.
I'm overloaded with LW
News from yahoo today was that surgery would have put him out until the end of February but that he was NOT going to have surgery and that he could be back in a couple of weeks.
excuse me, I have to go pick him up elsewhere :P
Brent,
Bryan McCabe is now designated as IR but when I put him on IR it doesn't give me an open roster spot. Any idea why?
I'd like to add a free agent but can't.
I was pissed though when I got back only to find out that Jeff had matched the shutout with one of his own. At the rate I'm going my team will never erase a 40 point deficit.
I'm still kicking myself for dropping Cheechoo when he wasn't doing much. He just scored his 28th. >:(:-*

It's middle of the pack for me this season.
It's middle of the pack for me this season.
I always seem to be 15-20 points behind and start to catch up, then you have a good night and I'm behind again. I'd like to actually make it to middle of the pack. ;)
Kovalchuk is available. I'm looking for goalies.
I wish you'd have offered him before I trade Theodore to Jason. I'd much rather have had Kovalchuk than Frolov.
Is there any trick to figuring out which goalies are actually getting the start on a given night? I'm getting tired of not having nay idea and picking two of three guys to go only to find out that one of them is on the bench (for the actual game) and a guy on my bench got a win that I won't get credit for.
??
Yahoo closes out roster changes slightly before a game starts...
Unless you're on the coaching staff, it's always gonna be a crapshoot as to who will be in net against whom.
I'm all for anything to boost the level of competition. Jeff's team has really run away with it and the guy closest to taking 2nd place from me is Brent, who's 14 points back, but has used about a billion more games than me at every position but goalie to get to this point.
I agree. The level of competition isn't where it should be.
Looking over the league just now, one problem I see is the "goalie hoarding" by some teams (having 4 and 5 goalies) yet they are still way under on using goalie games.
Looking over the league just now, one problem I see is the "goalie hoarding" by some teams (having 4 and 5 goalies) yet they are still way under on using goalie games.
In any event, barring about 3 or 4 major injuries to your squad, no one's going to catch you Jeff. I'm starting to think that it's just about wrapped up.
I'm certainly not throwing in the towel - just being realistic, and pushing for a little reverse mojo... 52 points in this league is a BIG margin to overcome.
Yeah but look at the dropoff to the next goalie to a dime a dozen wing, why in hell would I make that deal, the first deal I offered was a mistake which is why it was quickly canceled
And he's not only my #1 Goalie, he's the #1 goalie in Hockey
A back-up wing is not enough, sorry
Because...
#1 You were the one that wanted him
#2 You need to make my team better, by trading him away, I lose 34 points at G to my next highest Goalie and only gain 10 at RW and 11 at D over my worst 2 guys. You could look at Yahoo's ranks and do the same thing, Kiprosoff is ranked #5 while Gaborik and Corvo are 40th and 111th
Like I said, I wasn't going to give him away for one of your back-up Wingers
I mean, Brent had to dangle Ilya Kovalchuk (78pts) to get himself a top-flight goalie...
It's not crazy logic, Goalies are at a Premium, I have the top one,You wanted him and I want maximum value for him
Points are not points as Jeff pointed out, I could go and pick up a guy off waivers like Mike Sillinger who has only 3 points less than Gaborik. Who could I pick up at Goalie?
Your logic smacks of sour grapes, sorry, and I will try and stay out of the cellar with Kipper leading the way with another shutout last night :-*
There's no sour grapes bud. My team is challenging for one of the top spots. Your team is 10 points away from rock bottom, #1 goalie or not.
So what are everyone's thoughts on planning for next season? I think we need to go to a head-to-head format because looking at all the Yahoo leagues run here at JD, the point-based system is flawed each and every time. I also think we need to cap the # of goalies each team can have. I'm saying 3 max.

So what, he should just give up? If someone doesn't believe a trade will benefit himself, why would he go through with it?

Except maybe basketball. I won last year and I'm second last this year. I really don't see any big issues going on there. Is rotisserie the answer? Can it work for hockey?
I'm all for capping the number of goalies but I sure can't fault anyone here that's carrying lots. They saw the problem and addressed it. Me? I'm carrying de Vries on my roster as an extra defenseman ::) Can't blame anyone for that, although I could reasonably ask what the heck is wrong with Atlanta?
I'm open to having the league run as head-to-head though I won't hide my preference for leagues run the way this one is. I also will say that there are flaws with this one, no doubt about it, but I think those can be addressed in a number of ways:
- cap the number of goalies or simply reduce the active position to one goaltender, then the most you'd be able to carry was three anyway
- add a flex (or forward) and utility position for the skaters to allow for some freedom in your rotation (2 positions)
- reduce the number of players on each team's roster, maybe downwards to 15 or so
- change the point scheme, at least a little - I think 2 points for a win, -1 for a loss really changes the thinking for goaltenders and resolves many of the issues. I don't want to add a goals against strategy because we've done that at our spawn league and even with only -0.5 pt per goal it's made goalies essentially useless.
- I would like to add PIM, but at a sufficiently low point value that it doesn't override the skill aspect. Again, the spawn league has 1 pt per PIM, goons rule. I'd suggest 0.25 pts/PIM but even that might be high. Oh and I'd like to point out that in the spawn league I have Bertuzzi and he's been useless under that strategy ::)
- I'd like to keep the number of defensemen positions at 3 or 4 players though, so not everyone loads up on forwards alone. I think that's one positive aspect of this year's league.
- I'm not a fan of adding power play goals, power play assists or other modifiers like that. We're having issues with those at spawn again.
The funniest thing is the pool I run at work is the one with the least number of complaints: one goaltender, nine skaters, one bench position, one IR. Simple, straight forward. A point is a point, except for goalies: W=2, L=-1, SO = 3. The only big strategies are picking up or dropping players. No one's holding more than two goaltenders because of that minus stat, though lots of folks are holding two to get the max number of games.
No, you wouldn't. Because I've had to make the same damn decisions as you have when I've had multiple centers playing. I've had to choose between Elias/Spezza/Datsyuk/Horcoff. You're in exactly the same boat as everyone else.
But don't worry, you'll likely make it there eventually and Rob will probably pass me as well due to that damn cap.

If you've got Spezza and Datsyuk, it's beyond me how you would start anyone else at C and burn those games.
It would be wrong of me to complain about the cap because I left four points on the bench last night, right? :-X
Kozlov 2
Bondra 2

Oh sure, now you say that because you've passed me :P
A few of us are fighting it out for 2-4 but the league champ was decided so long ago that it really took the fun out of it for me. Anyone else feel that way?
Why would H2H produce any different result, points are still points and if thats the way we were playing 9 times out of 10 Jeff would still be wininng more than the rest of the teams
From what I've seen, Jason seems to be the only one that has a problem with the points based league (at least, the only one whose expressed his concern), so it seems unfair to completely change the league because one person is unhappy with it.
Why don't we just set up two leagues and enter the same draft into both and see what happens with the results in each - a season-long experiment of sorts... :P
If you'll indulge me, I'll run the league both ways.

**** I'm a useless tool around here, aren't I? :-*
52 points, 49 days left61 points, 47 days left63 points, 33 days left61 points, 26 days left
Winding down...
71 points, 12 days left
I think your teams forgot they were supposed to be making up a point a day over these last 50 days. :-*
Brent's team has flown past me, but not for long. He's far shorter on games than I am so I expect to finish in second barring a total meltdown.
Might I also add that it's total crap that Yahoo still has Vokoun on the Can't Cut List. I can't afford to drop anyone else, and I really need to bag another goalie before there is no one else.
Shame on you for stealing Mason from me Brent >:(
Mason with another shutout. Damn you Brent >:(
Probably safe to congratulate Jeff on winning Year one of JD Fantasy Hockey. Thank goodness it was someone from Minnesota, that's almost like Canada anyway. ;)
Looks like the final results are in... looks like a TIE for third?
1. Jeff's Hockey Team 856
2. Canuckleheads 794
3. Shocker Troopers 782
3. The Zods 782
5. Bushleaguers 771
6. Klippers 721
7. Minnesota IceMuskies 701
8. Massholes 692
9. The Famine 676
10. Puckin' Crazy 663
Thanks to everyone for sticking it out the whole year!
I'm in favor of more than 1 IR spot - you shouldn't have to drop a player because you're desperate to get a temporary replacement for him.
We can always try to hold a live draft for one league and the usual post draft for the other. I think it'll be more fun to have 2 different teams.
A part of me likes two different drafts, but I also think it would be interesting to see how the two different formats fare with the exact same rosters. I'm a little torn on this I guess.
