Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Official Space Exploration Thread

Yeah, I know what you mean Rob.  When NASA had the lunar impactor mission a few years back, a lot of people thought they'd get to see HD video of this thing flying into the surface of the moon.  But it wound up looking more like black & white time lapse images.

Sending a video stream over those kinds of distances is really prohibitive.  Satellites that provide video service are at an altitude of 23,000 miles over the Earth's equator, and you've got to have very precise azimuth and elevation adjustments in order to receive signal, let alone transmit.  Doing that from the moon, which is over 10 times that distance was a challenge in 1969.

Transmitting live video from Mars would be even more difficult, and the problem is twofold:  precision delivery of the signal, plus the power that would be required to do so.  The space craft probably doesn't have enough onboard power to transmit video.  And that's likely why NASA muxes together their telemetry with data from the onboard instruments and still cameras.  It's a lot more efficient from a power standpoint.

The wide shots of the bridge that was left intact were of NYC's Queensboro Bridge, otherwise known as the 59th Street Bridge.  I was surprised that this particular bridge would play a prominent role in the movie since it was also featured in a pretty big action sequence in the first Spiderman movie.

I thought the 'exile' bridge was the Queensboro since it had the cable car along side it (that runs from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island).

I wasn't sure about that one.  I mean, who knows a bridge by the footings at the water?  I for one wasn't sure that the "exile bridge" was the same bridge that was left intact.  From what I could tell Gotham had somewhere between 6 and 8 bridges.

Quite frankly, one of my few complaints about Dark Knight Rises was that it was so obviously New York freaking City.  The most iconic place in the country.  You can see the shape of the island, the Empire State Building... Saks... it seemed... lazy.

Yeah, the Empire State Building stands out.  But that Saks was not the one in NYC.  Despite the name, Saks is a chain.

There are a lot of city street shots that could have been in a number of northern US cities that have high rise buildings.  I think a good deal of those may have been shot in Pittsburgh, because there were lots of street scenes that were totally unfamiliar to me as something from NYC.

Nolan's Batman trilogy definitely calls on multiple cities to stand in as Gotham.  In the first film and the second, it largely seemed to be Chicago.  And you can totally spot a lot of distinctive Chicago landmarks:  bridges over the Chicago river.  Buildings that are an indelible part of that skyline.  The elevated train and the roads underneath them.  And even the fire escapes / back stairs like those on Jim Gordon's apartment are something you see a lot in Chicago buildings.  It's interesting that Nolan decided to change things up after making Chicago stand in for Gotham as he did.  But seeing how the third act of The Dark Knight Rises transpired, Gotham clearly had to be an island city in order for that plot device to be carried out.  In that respect, Chicago just doesn't work.

The third film seems to be much more of an amalgam.  Chicago seems to have fallen by the wayside in lieu of Pittsburgh and New York.  Most of the bridges, skyline and riverfront are totally NYC.  The aerials even show 1 World Trade Center which is still under construction.  Lower Manhattan is part of the location for the Stock Exchange heist.  And the establishing shot that shows Wayne Manor sitting on the cliff across the river from Gotham is clearly set on New Jersey's Palisades cliffs near the George Washington Bridge.

The neighborhood scenes look much more like Pittsburgh.  Obviously, Heinz field is in there, too.  And some of downtown Pittsburgh seems to be the location for the police chasing Batman on the Batpod.

As for the movie?  I thought it was a good final act in the trilogy.  Granted, I'm coming from a place where I didn't have much of a history or connection with Batman comics.  When it came to comics, I was far more into reading Marvel titles.  I think that Nolan was interested in a character arc for Bruce Wayne that had a clear beginning, middle and end.  And I think that part of the story arc was that NOBODY, in the real world, could continue with such an obsession to be a vigilante like Batman indefinitely.  Not even a billionaire like Bruce Wayne.

I like the fact that we hadn't seen the last of the League of Shadows.  The League certainly seemed larger than just Ra's Al Ghul and the henchmen that were brought to Gotham in Batman Begins.  Tying Bane and his partner to the League presented a viable threat to Bruce and Batman since they know who he is, and his alter ego couldn't protect him or his loved ones the way he might have intended.

As for the end of the film?  I don't think it's worth getting into the physics/timeline of flying a bomb far enough offshore to get it to a safe distance.  I was more tied up in the fact that Nolan had established a real sense of jeopardy for Batman.  That, and the fact that for a while the audience really seemed to think that he had made the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the city.  It was not a happy ending in any sense of the word.  And perhaps that's why not everyone is onboard with this final chapter in the trilogy.  But I have to respect Christopher Nolan for bringing us a more complicated and dark interpretation of the Batman character, and treating the audience like adults.

As for Joseph Gordon Levitt's character?  I really thought that they were working towards him taking on the Robin role.  But the end of the movie changed that for me when he found the cave.  I almost have to wonder if Warner Brothers put some serious pressure on Nolan to give them some sort of sequel option they could use if they wanted to continue on wiht the Batman franchise given the continuity that he had established.

I'm going to be hitting TJ Maxx with a vengeance.  I was never able to find Laufey or King Loki.  And I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Sif.  I was lucky and found her at TRU, but only once.

If you come up with an extra Laufey I would be interested   8).  I have been going daily to my closest TJ Max/Marshalls and still nothing.  I have only seen one Sentinel and it was at Marshalls and it was the Silver one.

So I think my local stores suck for toys.

I haven't found any sign of Thor figures at TJ Maxx near me.  I've seen figures from the Iron Man 2 and Captain America lines, but not Thor.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: X-Men/Wolverine Movies
« on: August 2, 2012, 10:00 PM »
I read about the Days of Future Past storyline in the past few days.  That was easily my favorite X-Men storyline of all time, and I've always felt a good degree of attachment to it.  But are we bound to see some significant changes to that particular story in order to make it work on screen?

Ellen Page has definitely come into her own as an actor since she played Kitty Pryde in X-Men: The Last Stand.  Will she and Wolverine still be the central characters in the movie adaptation?  And then there's the matter of the relationships.

There's clearly a continuity that's been established by the previous films that diverges from the books.  The film interpretation of the Phoenix storyline had to be scaled back tremendously.  But this story dealt with someone travelling from the future to the past in order to change the course of history.  How do you accomplish that in the movie and make it work?  That remains to be seen.

I've seen remnants of this wave near me over the past few days.  It's nice to know that it's hitting the stores, but it would be nice to see it in more significant numbers.

Guessing you're talking about the Galen Marek/Shae Vizsla wave?

Correct!  Wrong thread.  My apologies.

Fantastic work, Lando!  The whole scene looks great.  And it definitely shows you just how much well designed lightning can accentuate a scene like this.

JD Sports Forum! / Re: 2012 Summer Olympics

BTW Nick, I understand how timezones work and that most of the NBC cable networks are showing events all day.  However, they are not showing the more popular events (swimming, gymnastics, etc) live.

Yes, you understand timezones, but not television programming.  NBC appears to be saving the events with the higher level of interest for prime time when they can reach the maximum number of viewers.  And that has to do with the finances of them buying the broadcast rights for the Olympics.  They HAVE to show some of it tape delayed and in prime time in order to collect those ad dollars that help finance an incredibly expensive broadcast operation like the Olympics.

Right now, there are at least 4 networks with coverage airing RIGHT NOW.  Do you think if NBC was airing a swimming event that anyone would be watching Water Polo, Boxing, Fencing or Tennis which are all on right now?  Probably not.  In fact, it would probably hurt the ratings of those other events.

Is the internet going to spoil some of those results for some?  Absolutely.  But not for everyone.  And that's probably because the casual viewers aren't so wrapped up in the games that they're going online to find out the results.  It's a very calculated risk.

It's all about the cape. The ROTS version was inadequate, especially after seeing how well it could be done with the TFU black version. This new one doesn't look as good as TFU cut, but it's a definite upgrade.

I still have to shake my head over that TFU Shadow Guard.  It was probably one of the most HTF figures of all time.  And even with the TRU exclusive TFU packs, that figure never got repacked.  It really was annoying!

Who's watching what?

I'll watch the swim events when I can as well as track & field.  Hard to do without spoilers because NBC's coverage is horrendous!

We're in an age of social media, and there's a 6 hour time difference from the UK to the Eastern Time Zone.  There were bound to be spoilers on some of these events.  Millions of people in Europe were live tweeting during the opening ceremony yesterday.  Almost all of the surprise was lost.

What's the alternative?  Air the events live when people are asleep?  Or expect the audience to get up early so that they can watch the Shotput competition at 5 AM?  The events that are in primetime in the UK are something that people in the US could watch live, but you would probably lose a lot of the audience.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a US broadcaster that could provide Olympic content on so many different platforms, too.  Just doing some channel surfing, I was able to find Olympic coverage on 6 channels that are on basic cable.  And I think there's web content for some of the lesser seen events, too.  I think ABC/ESPN are the only other network groups that could offer anywhere near the programming.  In their case I think I've got about 4 or 5 networks on my cable that are under that Disney/ABC/ESPN umbrella.
