Leslye Headland brings a new @StarWars series to @DisneyPlus with The Acolyte. “The Acolyte” is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.
-
Could this be a KOTOR series?
-
Looks like it will be set in the High Republic era. Lots of fertile ground for story telling!
-
Beware: some spoilers for those hoping to go into this show cold...

I caught that interview, too. EW's Dagobah Dispatch podcast has been talking about the Acolyte quite a bit, in fact. They're still mining their interviews from Star Wars Celebration in London for content. On the most recent episode they spoke with 3 or 4 cast members - including Joonas Suotomo, who is now playing a Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca!

New date (June 4), new poster, and tease of something (likely trailer) coming tomorrow revealed by StarWars.com/LFL (https://twitter.com/starwars/status/1769755843451380154):

The trailer is here!
Lightsabers, Wookiee Jedi, spaceships, aliens. I'm liking what I've seen so far.
Maybe it'll turn out to be terribly disappointing [slowly glances over at the second half of TBOBF :-\], but I'll definitely be watching this on June 4th.
-
My only concern is with the show runner/writer.
So far it looks ok.
-
So I’m going to check it out tomorrow but this is by far the least excited I’ve been for a Star Wars show or movie since… ever?
-
I'm looking forward to checking this out. My daughter is really excited so that's probably elevated my excitement a bit more.
It's getting good reviews and it'll be a fresh take on a new era of Star Wars without everyone somehow being involved in the Rebel Alliance. That said, I'm interested to see if they will end up stuffing a Yoda cameo in there (either in a speaking role or an Easter Egg/background) as he's one of the few characters they could use. I guess maybe Chewbacca if they somehow find an excuse to visit Kashyyyk with that Wookiee Jedi guy.
-
I'm excited. Bunch of Jedi. Different era. Not sure what not to be excited about.
-
I'm happy for new Star Wars. The trailers look awesome. I just hope the writers made a good story.
-
I’m cautiously optimistic. I’ve seen some pretty savage early reviews (even USA Today) but I will reserve judgment for myself. Cast seems solid so that should help.
4 more hours to wait!
-
Not bad, I can see why some people might like this and also why other people might not so much.
It will be interesting to see where they go with the Big Bad since 100 years before the rise of the Empire would put him/her squarely during the reign of Plagueis’ master Darth Tenebrous. Doubt we will get to see him but it would be insanely cool.
-
So far I'm enjoying it.
-
I feel like whoever wrote this was like, 'I love Star Wars, and Parent Trap.'
-
I feel like whoever wrote this was like, 'I love Star Wars, and Parent Trap.'
Ha! Agreed.
Some good, some bad (hated the first fight sequence). I guess we'll see where this goes.
-
Two episodes in, I won't be surprised if this turns out really good or really bad.
-
I guess I’m kind of sharing the mixed feelings on The Acolyte as everyone else seems to be. It is not quite hooking me in the same way The Mandolorian did in its first episodes - or even the way the Andor, Ashoka, Obi Wan, even Boba Fett shows did. Granted the show is not bad so far - good characters, decent story, etc. but I think it says something that I’ve not been able to make it through the 2nd episode yet without falling asleep :P
I agree that this will either be really good or really bad when all is said and done.
-
I’m almost done watching the third episode and can’t shake the thought that this show so far is incredibly generic and offers nothing new beyond being set 100 years earlier.
I’m finding this one to be incredibly boring, with dialogue barely better than The Phantom Menace.
-
Yeah, the whole thing is starting to feel like a big waste of time and unfulfilled promise. And the dialogue is BAD. ::)
-
Last night's episode was fairly weak. All flashback and not even the whole story. Obviously the fire did not kill the coven, and we still need to see what caused Osha to walk away from the Jedi.
I expect another flashback episode next week. So while we might get the motivations of some characters, we're not going to see the main story progress for a second week.
-
Obviously the fire did not kill the coven, and we still need to see what caused Osha to walk away from the Jedi.
SPOILERS for anyone who has not seen it yet...
I kind of keyed in on Jedi Master Tommen Baratheon. He drank that poison pretty willingly in Ep2, so he had to feel bad about something. In that temple, his face was all scarred and his eye was messed up. In the flashback episode, at the start, we see Jedi Padawan Tommen get possessed by the witches and his face is fine. Taking blood from Osha, face still fine. Later in the episode, when Osha is waking up on the Jedi ship, you can see Jedi Tommen in the background next to Jedi Master Trinity and his face seems to be wounded in the same pattern as the scars we'd see in Ep2.
My guess is that the witches got into some kind of disagreement about Mother Mama wanting to let Osha go with the Jedi and Mother Lady-Maul wanting Osha to stay with the witches. There was some kind of throw-down, Mother Lady-Maul kills Mother Mama. Jedi showed up (maybe to collect the girls or sensing the danger?). Mother Lady-Maul attacks the Jedi in an attempt to stop Osha from leaving, Padawan Tommen gets his pretty face messed up, some portion of the Jedi take out the witches, they blame it on the fire.
I'll agree with you guys that this show's pacing and excitement level is not setting the world on fire, but I'm willing to see this ride to the end and judge then.

Same here. It's like these series were originally thought of as movies, they take the director's cut and divide it into 8 parts.

Sweet Jeebus. Another "there is no father". I hated that with Phantom Menace and I equally hate it now. Just a bloody stupid take regardless of who wrote it. ::)

Holy ****. Hi Brent!
As for this episode, I honestly think it’s the worst single episode of Star Wars since Disney took over, and it’s not close.
The jury is out as to whether this will be the worst series yet, but it’s got a good head start as far as I’m concerned.
-
Wow...an episode so bad it brought Brent back!
Good to see you dude!
-
The jury is out as to whether this will be the worst series yet, but it’s got a good head start as far as I’m concerned.
I mostly find this series boring and uninteresting so far. Devoting the entirety of episode 3 to a backstory element that didn't really even clarify anything meaningful is super weak.
TBoBF had a lot of that same stuff, but I also found some of The Book of Boba Fett to be totally nonsensical and kind of cringy.
I think The Acolyte still has a ways to go to reach the depths of TBoBF, but its certainly not anything I would recommend that any casual fan watches.
-
It’s so bad. It’s grounded in nothing. The characters are bland and expected. The dialogue is cringey. The plot and conflict are milk toast.
I can’t stop thinking about how bad it is so far.
-
One thing in the Star Wars universe that I'm kind of tired of is cute droid sidekicks. I'm not sure if that is something that Dave Filoni insists on with many writers, or if that is just the model that many feel they need to follow, but they need to stop it.
-
Walking. Talking. Walking AND talking! :D
I think I speak for many when I say I would have liked to have seen a lot more from that character before their untimely exit. Or anything really.
On the bright side, we are halfway done. ;D
-
One thing in the Star Wars universe that I'm kind of tired of is cute droid sidekicks.
My daughter; lover of Lola, Chopper, and now Pip; would like a word with you. :P. At least this droid side-kick isn't just an astromech and they tried to do something a little different.
I think I speak for many when I say I would have liked to have seen a lot more from that character before their untimely exit.
100% agree. Was really disappointed by how that whole sequence on Khofar played out. And the cliffhanger ending was just mean.
-
Just finished it. It’s certainly a better episode than that absolute train wreck last week. But that’s not saying much. This all feels so small, so local… so… inconsequential.
-
I'm taking the show as it is. I had few expectations for the series, and little to go on other than it's set in the era of the High Republic, and this might be the beginning of the emergence of the Sith.
So far I think the show has achieved some of its goals. It's showing the Jedi at their peak, but also some of their flaws. The orthodoxy among some, and the arrogance of others. The detachment from ordinary people. The way the order is perceived by those outside of the Jedi - notably, the taking of children. The politics creeping in with the mention of the High Council and the Senate this week.
It was interesting to see Ki-Ad-Mundi turn up in the series. And I'm wondering if the Kel Dor on the mission to Khofar was actually Plo Koon? Definitely sorry to see one character go before they could really be explored further.
This is showing why the Sith might be finally emerging from hiding. And this could be why the Master is setting events in motion by sending Mae to kill Jedi, and having agents like Qimir at their command. IIRC, I remember him saying something that came from the Sith Code - either in the show or in a clip.
I didn't have an issue with the Coven in the third episode. In a galaxy of trillions of beings, there are bound to be more Force practitioners than just the Jedi. And I think it's more than likely that the Jedi would come into conflict with these smaller sects given the status of the Jedi within the Galactic Republic. Conceiving children through the Force? It's not unheard of, but it is surprising to have it occur with the characters in this series.
Are there picking points? Some, sure. I do NOT like the design of the Jedi starship. It doesn't look like anything that was reminiscent of the PT. The interior seemed like it was a used universe design, but different from what we've seen before.
-
And I'm wondering if the Kel Dor on the mission to Khofar was actually Plo Koon?
I wondered that too with Dave's love of Plo but the SW.com twitter said that was Ithia Paan (https://x.com/starwars/status/1803241203531763794).
-
I'm a little fuzzy on my lore, but in Episode 1 didn't the Jedi Council say that they thought the Sith were destroyed or in hiding for 1,000 years, and that Darth Maul's sighting was the first?
The Acolyte takes place only 100 years before Episode 1. How are we supposed to think about Mae and her master? Are the creators splitting hairs and neither are Sith, but something else Sith-like? I know there are the Witches of Dathomir, and The Acolyte introduces us to a similar (but different?) coven of force witches that Mae and Osha come from. And I guess Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati from Ahsoka are Dark Jedi, which technically are not Sith.
-
I think it's certainly possible that Mae's abilities could have been written off as the product of her origins with the witches in episode 3. There are definitely other Force users in the galaxy. Linking them directly with the Sith, in light of the disappearance of the Sith a millennia earlier? I think what complicates our perception of THIS story is our knowledge of that history, along with the re-emergence of the Sith at the time of TPM. Are there more Dark Side users in the galaxy than we've been led to believe? It seems like that's a possibility since people leave the Jedi order - like Osha.
It also seemed that Vernestra Rwoh was trying to keep this off of the radar of the Jedi High Council. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like if that information got to the Council, there was the possibility of it getting back to the Senate. And I guess she was trying to prevent that from getting out.
-

How dare you share a non 50 year old white heterosexual male opinion about Star Wars.
-
When they first said, "don't tell the council, the senate will find out", I thought they wanted to explain why Jedi council isn't in show. But once the episode ended I took it to be how they will explain TPM's reaction to Maul.
-
The thing I keep coming back to is that it’s really NOT the emergence of the Sith. Darth Tenebrous would definitely have been active during this time and Plagueis would more than likely already be his apprentice by this point. They can’t retcon Plagueis either because he is mentioned in ROTS. It seems like kind of a stretch having all these different bands of Sith running around IMO and no one suspecting anything.
-
I think a lot of people have been wracking their brains about who this possible Sith might be. Especially in light of the established lore about the Sith. But then I think about what the franchise has done with movies and shows when previous stories (usually in print) have potentially limited where a show or movie might go - they plow it under and do their own thing. George Lucas was notorious for doing this. And the entire Sequel Trilogy did its own thing, because otherwise adhering to a lot of the previously written EU stories could have left those movies painted into a storytelling corner.
The uproar surrounding a certain Jedi Master has been ridiculous. Because how many people REALLY embraced that character before they felt like they had a vested interest in poking holes in this series? He had some moments in the 2D and 3D Clone Wars series. A lot of his scenes in AOTC were cut. And I would defy any of these "critics" to be able to name the actor who played him without looking it up online. Just stop it!
What I think is actually going on here with the Sith? I think it's becoming clearer that we've already seen his face, and it's Qimir. The tidbits that he has fed to Mae, the insights, and the bits of the Sith code? He seems to know too much to simply be a procurer of useful items. He knew where Kelnacca was. And I don't think a snare was going to stop him.
-
I read the Reddit thread on last night’s episode right at 10pm and I’m out. I’m not wasting another second on this stupidity until i know how it ends.
This show just makes the Jedi look stupid, weak and generally incompetent. And soooo easy to kill.
We really need to reverse this trend of glorifying villains and making them unbelievably powerful and invincible. It’s just stupid.
And I never liked the whole idea of cortosis, it just seems silly.
-
And I never liked the whole idea of cortosis, it just seems silly.
People bought into the idea that Beskar could defend against a lightsaber. Why not Cortosis as well?
-
So you didn't actually watch? My favorite posts. "It's not exactly what I wanted so I won't watch". I like that the good guys aren't infallible and the bad guys aren't pure evil. It's what always kept me away from Marvel and DC even if it turns out that was more my thought than reality. I liked "edited to not have name" the new Sith's reasoning for being who he is. I know a lot of people don't like Disney's take on the Jedi, but it feels way more realistic to how groups that have been in power for a long time end up acting.
-
Last night changed me from 67/33 the show is gonna be only better than TBOBF to 67/33 it'll be better than OWK and maybe Ahsoka
-
So you didn't actually watch? My favorite posts. "It's not exactly what I wanted so I won't watch".
I haven't watched it yet because I watch with my kid. They're away right now, and I'm saving the episode for later.
But one of the things that has bothered me SO MUCH about people's hot takes on the series have to do with their preconceived notions - most of those formed before the first episode had even dropped on Disney+. People went into this wanting to dislike it because of the showrunner or the lead actor. And I maintain that's on the so-called "critics" who went into this new series with an agenda of their own.
I like that the good guys aren't infallible and the bad guys aren't pure evil. It's what always kept me away from Marvel and DC even if it turns out that was more my thought than reality. I liked Qimir's reasoning for being who he is. I know a lot of people don't like Disney's take on the Jedi, but it feels way more realistic to how groups that have been in power for a long time end up acting. At most it makes THESE Jedi look not great.
I think the Marvel VS DC theme has some bearing here. I always found the Marvel characters, heroes and villains alike, to be more grounded. More flawed. More human. While DC characters seemed more like an archetype than a real person who deals with real problems. It's led me to feel like the Marvel characters were more relatable for me.
I think an exploration of how the Jedi have become aloof and out of touch needed to be done. It was always present in the PT, but very much as subtext. This series has put that concept front and center, and it can be unsettling to see the imperfections of your heroes. Those flaws and frailties make it more clear why the Jedi Order was doomed to fail.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new episode.
-
Sorry Nick for having the sith's name in there. I edited it but see it's still in your quote of mine.
-
Sorry Nick for having the sith's name in there. I edited it but see it's still in your quote of mine.
No worries! I had kind of figured out who it was already before the episode dropped. Check my post with the really small text!
-
So you didn't actually watch? My favorite posts. "It's not exactly what I wanted so I won't watch"
Yeah, but would anyone continue to watch something they don’t like? I forced myself to watch the first four and they just got worse and worse. I’m not one of those anti Disney nuts, I tried to give it a chance but it’s one of the worst scripted shows I’ve ever seen. The characters are all over the place from one episode to the next and the plot is just nonsensical.
Maybe there will be some big payoff with Tenebrous or Plagueis showing up at the end, but short of that I don’t really care anymore. I just hope this is a one off season and not an ongoing thing.
-
You made a pretty bold statement about episode five because of what Reddit said. Regardless you do you. I'd probably finish the final four episodes of a Star Wars show I was already four episodes into, but that's just me.
Like I said, I was leaning second worse live action show, but not all this hyperbole about it's "the worst scripted stupidity where the Jedi suck". To each their own. You're obviously not the only one who hates it.
-
I’ll be interested to see if anything comes of this series. I still really don’t know where its going and the journey hasn’t been that interesting, but its not awful either.
The only thing that has really bugged me is the opening battle where Mae killed the Jedi Master with knives.
-
I'll agree with you guys that this show's pacing and excitement level is not setting the world on fire, but I'm willing to see this ride to the end and judge then.
I have to admit that I liked the last two episodes a lot more than the first few. There are so many different things we still need to learn - who is the stranger's old master? Does the stranger have a current master, if so who? What is Sol hiding?
Going to be a lot packed into these last two episodes...
-

Spoilers ahead so don't read anymore if you have not seen the episode:
My guess is Vernestra. She is the embodiment of everything wrong with the Prequel Era Jedi. She's more concerned with politics than the will of the Force, she's deliberately hiding things from the rest of the order like she's trying to cover-up a mistake she made. Case in point: when Mog starts to hypothesize that Sol might be the fallen Jedi and killed everyone, she does nothing to dissuade him even though she knows Mae has a master. Some shady **** going on there.

That is my guess too. Plus the scar on his back seems to be more than a standard saber slash and that would line up with her crazy whip-saber.
-
I've been thinking that Qimir might have been Vernestra's padawan at some point. And I think she's trying to cover that up.
I am not convinced that he's actually one of the Sith, despite things that he's said. There was a music cue used with him that sounded like something related to Kylo Ren. And his helmet is reminiscent of something that the leader of the Knights of Ren wore before Kylo Ren took over that sect of Dark Side users. Could the Knights of Ren pre-date the rise of the Empire? I suppose it's possible.
-
Very possible Nick. We still haven't seen this one dude who has been cast.
-
I didn't mind the "real" story, but why spend a full second episode on the same basic story? A bit frustrating.

The review of last night’s episode over at JTA is just brutal. :D
Wait - you're telling me that JTA, notorious haters of Disney era Star Wars, had nothing nice to say about The Acolyte? #shocked (https://jedidefender.com/jsmentek/lol.gif)
I'll admit that this show isn't GREAT but it isn't the trainwreck that some make it out to be. Not every show is going to be able to be a Breaking Bad or The Sopranos or Mad Men. Sometimes you have to decide whether you're going to just enjoy the ride or you're going to quit watching. That's a personal choice - trying to tell other people what they should or shouldn't enjoy is a waste of time.
I'm watching The Acolyte. I'm generally having fun and enjoying the 30-40 minutes each week watching with my daughter (who is also enjoying the show). I guess that's all I want or need from this show. Could it have been better? Sure. It's not Andor, but it's also not Book of Boba Fett.
-
The review of last night’s episode over at JTA is just brutal. :D
Perusing those reviews reminds me why I no longer visit that site: toxic

Last night's episode was arguably the weakest episode of the season. Admittedly, Torbin was messed up by the witches and it lead to the events that ultimately killed off the coven (except Koril...she's still out there), but was it bad enough to send Kelnacca into self-imposed exile, Torbin to retreat into the Force and Sol to have such guilty feelings? If the answer is yes, the director and writers did not effectively show that.
As for the witches exploiting a vergence in the Force to create Osha and Mae and actually spitting one personality into two people....I feel that required a little more time to flesh out.
One more episode and it should be a banger to wrap up everything.
-
Agree with most comments here. This show is not great, but not terrible. My daughter and I have been watching it and she thinks its fine.
I do think it was odd to revisit the destruction of the coven and not really reveal anything new. I would have liked to see something that was clearly controversial that would leave a deep regret with the Jedi. Sure Torbin and Sol shouldn't have gone back, but what option did Indara have to resolve the situation once Kelnacca got "possessed"? Sure you might feel bad that it ended that way, but it didn't seem controversial.
I thought they were developing an interesting dynamic with Qimir and Oshi as she considered becoming an acolyte. To just drop that story line completely and go back to the coven story line seemed like an odd choice.
It'll be interesting to see how they wrap this up and if they leave it totally open ended. I guess there haven't been any statements as to if this is a one and done season or if there will be more seasons, but it doesn't appear a second season has been green lighted yet. Maybe it'll depend on how the show does from a viewership perspective.
My recommendation would be to take the $ they're spending on this show and try something different vs. do another season of this.
-
I thought they were developing an interesting dynamic with Qimir and Oshi as she considered becoming an acolyte. To just drop that story line completely and go back to the coven story line seemed like an odd choice.
Yeah, it felt like there was some flow building and this flashback episode disrupted that. It might have made more sense if Sol went to the Council and confessed to the events that happened since he's the sole survivor in a 5-minute monologue with some scenes intersperse in it than a whole episode dedicated to another version of previously seen events.
-
If they don't have a named Sith Lord in the last episode, this will be a gigantic failure. At this point, they have skated around the "Sith have been extinct for a millennia". I suppose events haven't been reported to Council. "Darth Teeth" seems to be a lot more powerful than a Knight of Ren. I would certainly say he seems stronger than Darth Maul or at least TPM Darth Maul. I have no problems with him kicking the crap out of the Jedi. You have to remember the Jedi have become quite arrogant by this time. This series ties in well with the High Republic stuff. The Jedi's arrogance has blinded them to threats against the Republic.
I keep wondering if the green Jedi woman is Sith. They could obviously hide in plain sight based on the prequels, but I wonder if they would go as far to plant themselves in the temple. I also keep going back to the "I have no name" line. I was thinking, sure you do, your master gave you a name. However, I wonder if he is just repeating what has been done to him. He has put Mae on a quest of revenge, that she must kill a Jedi without a weapon. We haven't seen a lot of canonical Sith lore, but one of things explored in the post Disney comics, is that a Sith must kill a Jedi and take their saber kyber crystal to bleed it into a red crystal to make their Sith lightsaber. I wonder if Teeth's master has been doing this to him and thus he was passing some of this on to Mae.
What I have wanted in Star Wars for quite some time, is a canonical Sith lineage from Bane to Sidious. This show could fill in part of that. This could be a way of showing the apprentice trying to take over from the master. That Teeth is the acolyte of the apprentice and is recruited to help him kill the master. I like the James Luceno Plaqueis novel, but the one thing that surprised me is that Plaquis was still the master going into the events of TPM. I figured Sidious had been the master for some time by then. It also made it seem like Maul really wasn't a Sith. His birth name was Maul and Sidious just gave him the title of Darth while Plagueis was still alive. Hence why I want a lineage. I think it could be done via novels and comics for the most part.
We will see where this ends up on Tuesday, but it better not be another flashback episode. I'm expecting a Sith Lord in their full power kicking someone's butt.
-
I know its not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it.
It was definitely not the best TV show I've ever seen, but certainly not the worst show I've ever watched. I liked the lightsaber battles and I got enough out of the story for me to find it worthwhile time spent.
I'd watch Season 2 if they decide to make it.
-
Knowing Disney, they will probably leave this completely open and drop it like a hot rock. However, they left a ton of questions to be answered. I think we were robbed of an after credits sequence that could have named a certain character that seems to have made a brief cameo.
In other lore, I can't believe it took me this long to actually identify the green jedi. She was in several of the High Republic novels and comics. She even makes her lightwhip in one of them and hides it from the council because she is worried they wouldn't approve. She was knighted at age 15 and took on her own padawan at age 16. They say she is 115 in Acolyte so the original High Republic stuff is 100 years before the show. I'm so far behind in my reading. Part 2 of High Republic goes even further back in the timeline.
At this point, we have to have a continuation, or they just wasted our time. They could have at least had Osha ask her new master what to call him with a reply of you can call me Darth whatever. At least the entire kill a jedi without a weapon storyline had a payoff.
-
Didn't hate it, but didn't love it. Interesting cameos and I thought the final episode was done well. It played out mostly how I predicted.
There are a few questions I want answered, so if there was a season two, I'd watch.
-
Palpatine: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?
Anakin: What, that Homeless Guy that lived in a cave?
:D
-
Yeah, not the greatest, not the worst.
Overall I was left feeling mostly unsatisfied.
I really think the story could have been a lot tighter. There was just too much unimportant stuff going on and too many characters. There were too many tangents that they spent a lot of time on. If they had taken the 8 episodes and told a cleaner story I think it could have easily been 100% better.
For example, the Jedi spent the first few episodes figuring out who Mae was. Then the Jedi were figuring out her plan and what her motives were. Then the Jedi were trying to figure out who Qimir was (looks like he got away without any witnesses other than Vernestra sensing him). And then in the last few episodes the writers were teasing if Qimir was really the master and what his relationship was to Vernestra. I think they should skipped through all that backstory and spent a lot more time on Qimir, Vernestra, and the creepy dude hiding in the cave. I know they kind of wanted to tell the Osha becoming an acolyte story, but I'm not sure I buy Osha going to the dark side with the way they told the story.
And that tracker weasel was annoying. Can't Jedi just use the force and figure out where other Jedi are?
-
Final take... this feels like Star Wars Twilight. Not the awesome Twilight ship, but a weird soapy production that was poorly conceived, and odd characters and bad dialogue.
-
CANCELLED.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. I guess it’s good Disney listened to feedback and admitted a mistake, but this feels like an L. I worry it means that will take fewer risks and just go with more AI-driven OT era stories all in the same old format.
I didn’t love or hate the show overall, but I am disappointed to not see the loose ends tied off or get some payoff from the final cameos.
This is the real tragedy of Darth Plageuis the Wise.

Love it.
This show had more action figures made than some of the sequel movies, too, and in a timely manner. Hopefully, we’ll still get Kelnacca and Qimir/The Stranger.
-
Not surprised. This show was hated before it even aired.
-
I didn’t hate it until after it aired. I thought it was mostly unwatchable. I let my Disney membership lapse after four episodes and wasn’t in any hurry to extend it to catch the rest. I’ll watch it when there’s something else worth subscribing for…
But honestly good riddance. I’d rather the budget go towards stuff that’s a higher caliber than this.

In my heart I want all of the Star Wars stories to succeed, but some are just really not that good, including The Acolyte. I'm okay with the cancellation and also hope that they can find better ideas than another season of this.
-
I'm a bit bummed about a cancellation because I would have liked to see where they went with this. I guess I'm in the minority on that though.
I guess maybe if the show had been set more from Qimir's point of view - showing him recruiting an acolyte, setting her against Jedi and then slowly revealing why she hated these particular jedi (because of a misunderstanding over something that happened on her home planet), slowly revealing Qimir's boss and setting up a S2 where Qimir and his acolyte face off against other Apprentice candidates, etc.
There's a lot of potential there but people get so caught up in the force witches, the twin birth/creation, and all the other things they felt "broke" canon that once again the loud whiney voices drowned out the voice of people who were willing to give it a chance and grow into something. I guess though when a tv show costs $165million you can't really wait for it to grow into something...
-
I read yesterday that the show had a bigger budget than Dune 2.
-
While I'm good with the cancellation I kinda hope the story can get wrapped up via comics/novels or maybe even a short animated bit (e.g. Tales of the Jedi/Empire) as I don't like the loose ends.
-
This makes the 3rd live-action Disney SW series that wasn't renewed for a second season, presumably because the ratings weren't there. I wonder if that will re-shape budgets or thematic parameters for new productions.
-
What are the other ones?
Was BoBF ever supposed to be more than one season? I haven't heard anything on Ahsoka but I thought they had hoped to do another season.

I think BOBF was a we'll do one season and see what happens (either more TBOBF or just fold him back into TM). Kenobi I think was always designed as a limited series. D23 confirmed a second season of Ahsoka is "in development" but based on LFL record lately, I'm not considering that a sure thing until they start actually shooting.
------------------
The ratings numbers are hard to find/confirm, but it is rumored to go something like this -
(views per episode)
TM S2 - 29.9mil
TM S3 - 24.8mil
Kenobi - 19.1mil
TBOBF - 14.9mil
Ahsoka - 13mil
Andor - 9.9mil
Acolyte - 9.3mil
So Andor, which most "fans" seem to say is "the best" D+ show was actually the lowest watched series until The Acolyte came along. Andor cost $250mil for 12 episodes; Acolyte seems to be about $180mil for 8 episodes. Seems like they cost about the same to make so I guess it's lucky for us that Andor was scripted/designed from the start as a two-season show or it might not have gotten a Season 2 either.

It stated definitively in that article Rob posted that Ahsoka has already been renewed for Season Two. Which I’m happy about mostly because I like the characters even though I did not care for some of the choices the writers made.
Relieved Acolyte won’t be back though, I rarely use the expression “insulted my intelligence” but it really applies here. Rob summed it up best I think.
Not sure people are going to love Skeleton Crew either but maybe it will turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

It's genuinely disappointing to see this happen. But the toxicity from segments of the "fan" community really hurt this series before the first episode dropped on Disney+. A lot of people were intent on hating it before they ever saw the show, and they made their feelings abundantly clear to anyone that would listen, and even those that weren't interested in their hot takes.I do not like seeing Star Wars fail. And I don't like seeing anyone cheer for Star Wars to fail. I think it's harmful to the franchise and it keeps new fans from embracing the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Because why would they want any part of the a$$holes who actively campaign against almost every new show or movie that Lucasfilm produces?
I think the series got more and more interesting as it went along. It showed how the Jedi Order had morphed from something like a monastic order into a festering segment of the Galactic Republic. And it showed an increased sense of diversity in practitioners of the Force. Qimir / the Stranger helped turn the Sith from two-dimensional characters into something more complex and nuanced. How did they get there? And we saw that to a degree with Osha and Mae as well. Now we lost the opportunity to see that develop more deeply than we already have.
-
I watched the first episode of the Acolyte when it dropped, but I did not opt to watch the second one even though it was also available. I wasn't captured by the first one, it felt amateurish and hollow somehow ( it turned out I was in the midst of a heart attack at the time, so perhaps I was...distracted?)
Once I took care of all that, I never came back to the show. Like I said it didn't hook me with the first one, and even though I am a lifelong Star Wars and SW toy fan, these days it has been my stance that they need to pursue me, not the other way around. If they can't entice me with the "entertainment" or make it fun and easy to purchase their products, I am just as happy to ignore it. It was the first live action SW TV show on Disney+ I didn't watch all the way through. (I tried Resistance and Bad Batch, which were both also a first episode try and pass.)
Looking forward, I hope more Star Wars projects are launched as self-contained things. My one big letdown with the Ahsoka show last year was how unresolved it ended, and from what I hear the Acolyte had the same kind of "ending." Leaving the story unfinished is just more salt in the wound for the fans that did engage. Mando Season 3, as much as I disliked it, had an ending even if it opened the door for more adventures. Resolving things is a necessary part of storytelling.

******* A dude?? You doing ok?

******* A dude?? You doing ok?
Yes, thanks, much better these days. It wasn't an event as much as a slow build up. The doctor who fixed me up said it looked like it had been going on for a week or more, and I knew I felt bad but I just kept pushing through, until the goddamned Acolyte.
No I am just kidding, the show didn't do it. It wasn't until I spent the next day out with my sons that I really noticed I was slowing down and out of energy...then I took myself to the ER to get checked out. We're all getting older, here -- keep an eye on yourself!

Woah man. That's really scary. Glad to hear that you thought to go get yourself checked out after noticing something was off and that everything was okay, considering. Wishing you the best in your recovery.
-
Yes, thanks, much better these days.
Also glad to hear that you made it through your ordeal, Muftak - wishing for an easy recovery for you.
-
Sheesh! I hope you're recovering! Get well!

Glad you're doing okay now!

Thanks everyone, sincerely. It was days after my 50th birthday, such a wake up call for what the rest of my life means to me.
I did not intend to derail the thread

PLEASE!
I think it's a sign of the quality of a community when we can set aside our hobby and have a conversation about what's important - THE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY! I know that you and I discussed this in another setting, but I'm still very glad that you can see that people care, and are glad that you got treatment and are doing better. I know that I am. And it's a reminder to us all that we're not the little kids who saw the OT in the theaters anymore. We have fuller lives, families, responsibilities, etc, and that we have to be more conscious of taking care of ourselves.

Wholeheartedly agree. Don't feel bad for 'derailing' anything. We are just talking about movies, tv, & toys here normally, none of which are particularly important in the grand scheme of life.

Had a similar wake up recently. I’m 44 and in February I found out I have a genetic heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. I could live to a ripe old age without any major consequence, or I could need open heart surgery, heart transplant, or I could be one of the small percentage of people who just have sudden cardiac arrest from it and die. So now I have a cardiologist. The good news is he says he’s not that worried about me and that I’m on the less concerning end of the spectrum for people who have this. Super lame though.

Well, since I turned Disney Plus back on for a month or two for Skeleton Crew, I finally watched the last 3 episodes of Acolyte.
They had a few moments in them that were okay, but none of it changed my opinion of the show, I still think it was awful and generic and predictable. The only two things worth bringing up for me after it was that 1) it was cool to see live-action Plagueis even if just for a few seconds... and 2) that green lady Jedi sure did Sol dirty at the end.
Hopefully they can find a way for Plagueis to get into some other stories that are better than this one was...
-
The fight scenes were well choreographed, but there was a lot of poor writing. Characters' motivations changing on a whim, it was just lazy at times.
You would think Jar Jar Abrams was involved.
-
I got Disney+ back for Skeleton Crew too but still have no desire to go back and resume this stinker. :-X
-
I honestly think this one is better than Skeleton Crew. I have a feeling both are going to have the same let down of an ending.
The biggest problem with Acolyte is they basically lied to us as to what the show was about. It was supposed to be about the Sith, which seemed quite incidental to the plot. It did show the arrogance of the Jedi and showed how Palpatine was able to bring them to ruin.
I guess we have to assume Vestara didn't say anything of significance to Yoda, otherwise, Yoda kept the existence of the Sith hidden from the rest of the Jedi.
My guess is that some of this will get told through the books/comics since that is where Vestara came from. I'm terribly behind on the books so I'm still only in the second chunk of High Republic stuff currently.
