Title: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Morgbug on September 21, 2011, 12:15 AM
Bedlam baby!  ;D

First preseason game tonight.  Surprisingly mature hockey crowd; more calm at points than expected for sure.

Traffic was a nightmare downtown and it took nearly an hour to get to the game.  Bars all around MTS packed with folks without tickets.  Everyone was really happy and no, unlike Vancouver absolutely no riots (but then we won tonight).

Beers: $8.25 for a Jumbo.  Ouch.

Fully noting it was a split squad game, but we sure got a nice game out of our boys.  Scheifele is making Chevyldayoff look like a frickin' genius with a four point game in his first NHL outing (2G, 2A).  Byfuglien is a monster - first shift flattened two guys and a five minute fighting major.  He will be a favorite in this town.  Ladd played well too.  So we won that one 6-1 but lost the other half 5-1 in Columbus.  Do I care?  Nope, not for a second.

Nice mix of old and new Jets gear on the fans and no whiteout.

Happy.  I am.

Malkin looked good last night...  I didn't catch all the game since I was tied up till late, but what I did watch was good.  Love this time of year.

I am digging Shanahan as the league's enforcer of bad hits so far.  He's doing a good job of explaining what and why and leaving it out there for everyone to see.

It will be interesting to see if some guys try to take advantage of it though and take some exaggerated dives.  It would be awesome to see Shanahan call people on that as well.  Probably only take a couple of one game suspensions to cull the diving a fair bit.

Oh and had lunch with Byfuglien, Kane and Ladd the other day.   ;)

I need to see if I can score some tix to the Winter Classic this season.  My father knows someone that's been hooking him up with various Philadelphia sporting event tickets.  Hopefully he can come through with the WC.

Okay, that would've been a hell of a lunch!  Any cool insight into the game?

If you have 45 minutes to kill (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockeynightincanada/hockey/video/#id=2149799874&tab=1).  Not as meaningful to many here as it was to me, but neat for hockey fans.

About 17 hours and change until puck drop.   ;D

Ew.  That sort of sucked, at least the end score did.  Didn't really seem like anyone cared about the outcome all that much.

One questionable call (interference on Stuart) followed by an absurd call against Byfuglien and the Habs rolled away with it.

Make no mistake, the Habs played well, the Jets played very poorly, so the outcome was an accurate reflection of the game, but there were some dubious calls.

Still, tons of fun.  My ears are ringing like I was at a concert.  Loudest crowd I've ever been in at a sporting event.

And with that, you've been welcomed back to the NHL, Brent. :)

I hope they activate him for next week...  I'm sure Brent would like a closer look at him on Monday and then I believe the Pens head here the next night.

Then again, maybe we're better off if he's not playing when the Pens come here... :P ;)

I think they'll probably take a week or two of contact before he's active for a game.  Just my guess, but who knows.  I'm just happy he's doing well.

Don't have tickets to a Pens game, so the longer he sits, the happier I am.

Lost to the Hawks tonight, so we're 0-2.  Much better game than the home opener but the studs on the team need to step up at some point.  Still don't care that they lost.  Put up a good effort in a tough building.
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Jeff on October 17, 2011, 02:38 PM
Lots and lots of re-alignment talk out there this past week... the four most common seem to be:

1 - Detroit in Southeast, Winnipeg to the Central
2 - Detroit in Southeast, Winnipeg to the Northwest, Minnesota to the Central
3 - Detroit in Southeast, Winnipeg to the Northwest, Colorado to the Pacific, Dallas to the Central
4 - Detroit in Southeast, Winnipeg to the Northwest, Vancouver to the Pacific, Dallas to the Central

I prefer #2 or #4.  If we can't get into the Central, then at least ship Vancouver off the Pacific instead of Colorado.  We get rid of those 9pm starts and keep our only US division rival.  #3 pretty much guarantees the continuation of the endless 11th Province jokes on Versus NBC Sports Network.   :P
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Morgbug on October 17, 2011, 04:19 PM
But you are the 11th Province.  Well, 12th if you factor in North Dakota but I'm pretty sure NBC is unaware of that state's existence.

Vancouver has to go to the Pacific.  It's idiotic not to put them there.  Like Minnesota and Dallas, we don't want to watch games that start two hours later.  While Winnipeg is new and has no leverage in the situation, it's just dumb to put four Canadian teams in the same division.  I can survive watching a division with Edmonton and Calgary but truthfully I could care less about seeing them that often.  I am in the minority on that locally though.

Would rather see us in the Central if there was a choice given.  Agree completely Dallas should be there too and it seems silly to me that Winnipeg and Minnesota would be in different divisions given the potential for a rivalry there and the relative short distance to travel by air.

I'm not convinced Detroit is moving East.  They are a huge draw and I'm sure in some way they'll eke out some concessions from the NHL and stay in the West.  The NHL has to think of it from a marketing standpoing and Detroit is often the only sellout in many Western arenas.  I know the east would be thrilled to have them back there as a draw and Detroit would like the improve travel but I'm not convinced it benefits the league.

Post by: Jesse James on October 17, 2011, 09:14 PM
They were reporting here that Columbus is trying, very hard, to get moved to the East over Detroit too...  They're mentioning them as much as Detroit on the talking head shows out this way anyway.  I think Nashville was mentioned too, but they said were not likely.

I'd dig Columbus a lot, but either way I can't say I care I guess.

I know we are only 1/8 of the way through the season, but it's nice surprise to see EDM and MIN in the top four in the West.  :P

I'm sure neither team has much chance to hang on and be in the top four at the end of the year, but I've seen enough from my Wild so far this year that I'm now expecting a 7-8 seed in the West and not just "at least we were better than last year".

I always hate saying that with how many people hate him (usually just rivals though).  Nice post Jesse.  ;D

When he scored that goal my heart skipped.  It reminded me of all the comebacks I watched Lemieux make growing up, and how they made me emotional when I was younger.

How many games do you have where your goalie shuts out the opponent, and winds up the #3 star?  That was a good game.

I'm ecstatic Crosby is back and I hope he gets to play many more years.  The realistic side of me says one shot to the head and he's done forever.   :-\
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Jesse James on November 23, 2011, 09:01 PM
I guess he's been ok for months though, they were just being incredibly cautious and rightly so...  But he's been chomping at the bit to be back, and I think he'll be ok.  Fortunately he's not one to take that many shots to the head too though, like say Lindros was (bigger/slower target).

All you can do is just hope everything's fine and he's ok for the rest of his career.  *shrugs*  Not much else to say I guess, and no sense worrying about it as a fan and all...  It'll either happen or it won't.

Ok Reallignment has passed the Board of Govenors (can't make the link work, I am posting from my iPad).

What are your thoughts?

I haven't read all of it, but I like Dallas not being in the Pacific (2 time zones away) and I dislike the top 4 teams from each division making the playoffs.

Dallas being moved will help viewership locally for sure. I'm sure it makes me not a true Hockey fan but it is just rough to start watching an away division game when the puck drops at 9:30pm or later.

I'm in the same boat as you Paul - glad to be in a grouping that gives us less of those 9pm road games.

Should be interesting to see how things work with playoffs - inter-conference rounds 1 and 2 are going to make for some big battle matchups guaranteeing rivalry playoff games.  And I'm not really sure how the conference finals work?  1vs4 and 2vs3 or AvsD and BvsC?  Or something else more standard?  Have to see how it shakes out I guess...  also wondering what they are going to come up with for names... would be neat to see some of the older "classic" names make a come-back instead of geographical names.

I really thought they'd take the easy way out and just swap DET-WPG, but I'm glad they didn't.  I'm sure some of the decision must be a little proactive - now they can move PHX east to Quebec/Toronto and there will be a spot for them out there no matter where they end up. :P

And, in other news - not only still the best in the West, but kings of the NHL baby! Seriously - 17 wins, 37pts?  Crazy - still not expecting this run to last the whole year, but it's been month and the Wild are still playing like they can't lose.  I am loving the fact that this team can go into a 0-2 hole and still find a way to win games 4-2 or 3-2.  Great goaltending and timely scores are really helping us stay up top. :)

Finally, a MN team that can win! (yeah, I heard the Lynx won the WNBA championship, but do they count?)

Locals were saying it'll play out as 1v4 and 2v3...  For what it's worth.

It was all the talk last night between periods so it was fun speculating that the old school names may be coming back too.  Now if the All Star game would go back to orange/black.  :D
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Morgbug on December 6, 2011, 06:37 PM
Now if the All Star game would go back to orange/black.  :D

That would pretty much rock.

I'm extremely happy about the realignment going the way it did but a ton of people are upset we don't have Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in our division.   ::)  Not such a big deal to me as I've always hated Vancouver and the natural rivalry was Calgary and Edmonton anyway.

But I'm thrilled to be in a division with two original six teams in Detroit and Chicago.  I think a natural rivalry can arise between the Jets and the Wild (your team name sucks  :P) that could become quite enjoyable.  I'm also quite happy about the other teams in the division aside from maybe Columbus but that one does make sense too.  Always liked the Stars (either northern or southern incarnations) and I think the Preds are a pretty neat team too.

I think the NHL made a winner out of every team by having home and away games with each team each year.  Makes sense from a marketing standpoint to have the Crosby's, Ovechkins, original six or whatever deems a team worthy of seeing visit each team in the league.

It's particularly meaningful to my season ticket group as we have seven guys and five of them are Habs fans.  But so is my wife, so that really makes six of seven.  It's so bad we have a "Habs clause" in our group contract whereby if you've seen them, you can't select them again in a draft until everyone else has.  That could mean, depending on how your draft lines up and who picks what team, it was a minimum of 14 years until you got to see them again  :o  Now with the home and home it's only a seven year wait.  Still a really long time but a great improvement.

So with Winnipeg's move to the former Western Division we'd hardly see Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, Montreal and lots of other exciting teams on a yearly basis.  Even worse we might not have seen Detroit next year with the old scheme and we didn't get a home game with them this year either.  There's a lot of talent on that team I'd like to see play a game.  Now it's a nonissue and it makes our drafts a lot more interesting for our group.

I am very pleased.

Agreed...  The 2 with every team is, to me, key...  It's amazing how long it's been for visits to certain cities.

I love playing the same teams in the playoffs each year. Most of the best rivalries were forged this way. It should be a blast to get some hate in on Boston, Buffalo, Toronto, and Ottawa. Plus everyone already hates the Habs.

Fans are big winners with every team coming into town every year.

I also like that two teams could play in the semi's one year, an then for the cup the next. With the game times mostly starting in the same time zone, kids will be able to enjoy more games.

My only loss in the changes is Washington only coming to town once. Lightning fans will miss watching Ovie cry.

I give this two big thumbs up.

Anyone else watching the Winter Classic today? I've had it on most of the morning so far. I don't know either of the teams too well this year but Flyers and Rangers games are always fun to watch.

As always I was a bit annoyed with some of the classless boobirds in Philly who were booing the Canadian anthem. At least it did seem to die off a bit towards the end, and it seemed like it may have just been a rather loud minority.

Boo on the NHLPA for kiboshing the realignment for another year.  I'm happy in the sense we get the eastern teams that would have been out of our division for another year, but I was really looking forward to Chicago and Detroit being in our division.

Bah, lockout/strike to start the 2012-13 season.  Yay.

I know we were playing above our station quite a bit during our run in December, but man injuries have just killed us this year - Koivu, Bouchard (again), Lantendress, etc.  We made some nice trades at the deadline to get some new parts for next year, but there is a fair amount of work yet to be done before we're a real team...  :-\

We haven't been quite so depressing but we have proven we are the Atlanta Thrashers still.

Huge game tomorrow night against Florida.  And yeah, I didn't think Florida was a likely choice to win the SouthEast division either.  In fact, the game tonight was my second last pick (Ottawa was my last pick) of ten games for our season tickets.  Instead of being a 'blech, Panthers' this game is a huge four point swing one way or the other.

I will clarify to say I'm ok with not making the playoffs this year (holy crap are tickets expensive!) but it would still be really fun if the Jets could with the SouthEast title so we could hang that banner from the rafters.

Also really digging the trade we made with Chicago for Oduya.  Dumping a guy in the last year of his four year deal for a 2nd and a 3rd round pick this year?  Genius.  Especially if that guy hasn't nearly justified his salary as Oduya did not.  I do hope it works out for Chicago, but I don't think it was a good deal for them.

I think all those games in hand FLA has on Winnipeg and a talented and heating up Washington will keep that banner somewhere else. Great story this year though. and much more fun to watch than the empty seat backs in ATL.
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Morgbug on February 29, 2012, 10:44 PM
Oh yeah, I agree.  The chances of Winnipeg hanging that banner are really slim.  We have three games with each of Florida and Tampa plus two (or maybe three) with each of Washington and Carolina.  We'd need to win pretty much all of them to hang that banner and that's doubtful.  But it would look funny.

Young team, lots of draft picks this year, hopefully Scheifele is ready next year.

That arena though?  It seriously rocks in there.  Don't go home every game feeling like I was at a concert, but some of them, yeah, loud as a rock 'n roll show.  Good ringing in the ears after the Bruins game.   8)

It really is going to be quite the exciting month or so for the rest of the season. I really hope my Avs can keep up the momentum they have going and take a playoff spot. It's sad how much the Northwest has dropped off as a Division over the last few years. Vancouver hasn't had much real competition late in the season for the division title for a few years.

I still think the Avs can make a run for the playoffs this year. They did certainly make it a lot harder on themselves with that loss to Columbus though. If they miss the playoffs by a point or two, that will be the game that lost it for them.

For real!  I could make a push at 2nd or maybe even 1st place here if I can get strong play out of that guy.

Of course, I didn't know he was going to suit up tonight.  That's the second time that's happened this year, last time he scored 6.5 points, and 2.5 tonight.

I almost went to that Rangers/'guins game, but my brother decided to see the Hurricanes instead (cheaper). I know we both were leaning towards this game because of the Pittsburg's history, but at least we saw a win.  ;) My 3 year-old daughter enjoyed going, too, and talked all about the hockey game, though she wanted to go home part way into the 3 period. I was trying to get her to hold out, but she had school the next morning and the Rangers had just scored an insurance goal with about 5 to go, so I figured we'd go and someday she'll be old enough to be psyched to sit through a whole game...

of course, by that time we'll be back in Minnesota.  :P

Bloodbath in Chicago between the Blackhawks and Canucks.  Daniel Sedin was knocked out of the first by Duncan Keith which led to about ten different fights throughout the first and second periods.  Ultimately the Hawks won in OT, but that was a brutal game.

I've seen enough from my Wild so far this year that I'm now expecting a 7-8 seed in the West and not just "at least we were better than last year".

*sigh*

Another shut-out loss over the weekend mathematically eliminated us from the playoffs.  And, I'm pretty sure we're not even going to be able to swing that "better than last year" part.   :'(

At this point though, with the second half of our season being pretty much an injury-ridden train wreck, I'll be more than happy to see them continue to tank out the rest of the year and increase the odds at the #1 pick this Summer.   :P

You'll get me for 9 games + the playoffs.

Can I join your Smashville bandwagon?

I've guess moving to NY and adopting the Rangers as my team is a good move. One nice thing about NY is that  every night is hockey night... either the Rangers, Islanders or the Devils are playing.

freakin Stars.  Oh well. The Stanley Cup is still fun to watch without my favorite team.

I haven't seen much of the eastern Conference, so I don't know who will be cursed with my support.

I know my wife will be wearing her Blues jersey every night they are on so I am probably stuck supporting them.

I don't think the Stars had much of a chance anyway.  All their goals seem so accidental, not just pure scoring chances. The goalie is pretty solid but he has very little in front of him.

Add last night's other loss to Columbus and there goes the playoffs. I'm still pretty excited about this team in the future, but I think they need to add a good veteran goal scorer in free agency this year. But they won't of course. They had a few disappointing games down the stretch, but really have played great since the end of January or so and have been a lot of fun to watch.

I'm not sure who I'm pulling for in the playoffs this year. Vancouver I suppose.

OT loss to finish the season and Stamkos pots his 60th goal against us.  At least the crowd showed some class and gave him a standing O.

Missed the playoffs in a pretty lame ass division but I don't think there are many people around here who care much about that.  An absolutely incredible year that flew by.  Welcome back to Winnipeg, NHL, we missed ya.

No worries Morgbug at least now you get to draft ahead of the lightning. Barring a miracle 1.8 percent ping pong chance.

Crazy that fans in the peg are the only ones in the league that boo Stamkos every time he touches the puck. The kid is a great image for the league. It was nice to see the ovation though.

Now to play who do I hate more in each of the playoff match ups.

They boo the top player for each team, so it's nothing personal against Stamkos.  There's a lot of respect for his level of talent.

I'm not sure why the fans started booing the top player, it doesn't make sense.  But you aren't going to fight it so might as well join it.  It lacks class, but it seems to be what's done now.  I'm only at a quarter of the games so it's not up to me.  It is what it is.  I think the only thing to take away is that the fans are just that engaged in the game up here.  We're just having fun.
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season

I did not know they did that for every team's top player. We save that for people who really go above and beyond live Ovie's "my stick is on fire" 50th goal celebration. He still gets booed every time he touches the puck. Lindros is the only other person I can think of that we have given that treatment to.

It is great to have Winnipeg back, and the fans. I talked to a guy last week that flew himself and his two boys down to Tampa to see a game because they could not get tickets up there.

I'd love to see Quebec City get their team back too. There is something magical about seeing a game played in Canada.

A lot of people travelled to see a lot of Jets games this year.  I know Phoenix was a huge draw at home against the Jets and there were several hundred that attended that game.  Minnesota was even bigger, simply because lots of Winnipeggers make that drive for mini-vacations all the time as it's only seven hours.  Three thousand Jets fans made the trip for the game in St. Paul.  Very cool.

As for Lord Stanley's Cup, I'll go...

NY, BOS, NJ, PHI in the East
and
VAN, SJ, CHI, and DET in the West

Man, the 4/5 match-ups are going to be great games.  Pit/PHI will be a slugfest and NAS/DET could also go either way...

Not sure if anyone else is watching the Blackhawks/Coyotes series, but Torres knocked out Hossa in the first period with a vicious hit.  Speculation is that he will get suspended for at least 6-10 games.  He left his feet and hit Hossa directly in the head with his shoulder.  They had to carry Hossa off the ice on a stretcher.  The worst part was that there was an official less than 10 feet away and he completely missed the call...

NHL badly needs to get things under control, these playoffs have been brutal and I could care less which player on which team is doing the injuring, hit them hard.  Long suspension and loss of pay for both playoffs and regular season.  Ridiculous.

The linesman nearest that Hossa hit actually flinches in the video when the hit is made, presumably because he thought Hossa would fly into him rather than drop like a sack of rocks.  And no call?  GMAFB.  Cannot in any way say he missed the play because he's RIGHT THERE.

My wife and I were both yelling about that exact same point during the replays.  I seriously thought that Q was going to burst a blood vessel in his face when he was screaming at the officials after the play.  I was glad to hear that Hossa left the hospital under his own control and even happier to hear that Torres was indefinitely suspended until his meeting on Friday.

I'm really hoping that the Hawks can at least win one of the next two games (if not both) because I have tickets for Game 6 on Monday.  It would be awesome to see them win the series at home when I'm there.

The Rangers played like they should have for the past few games. Hope they can pull it off in the Garden on Thursday. Can't stand Chris Neil. The play-off experience was amazing last night until the third period when the Coyotes went up by 2.  After that the enegy just left the building.  The Blackhawks are in desperate need of a first tier goaltender as I think this season showed a distinct disadvantage for the Hawks in goal.

Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: I Am Sith on April 24, 2012, 06:57 PM
Eddie O has been saying that exact same thing all series against Phoenix and it seems from memory that the main goals they scored were all up high.  They also didn't have nearly enough traffic in front of the net.  Smith had way too many open looks at shots.

One other thing that Eddie O said during the Hossa/Torres incident that I would love to get people's opinion on was with respect to how the league can get bad hits under control.  He stated that if a player is suspended for an illegal hit, then the team should have to play short handed for each game that player is suspended.  He thought players and coaches would have more incentive for policing themselves if that were the case.

I realize that it would never happen, but it could possibly keep things under more control.  Now, I'm not in favor of neutering players like the NFL tried to do this past season, but I did think he brought up an interesting concept...
Title: Re: NHL 2011-2012 Regular Season
Post by: Morgbug on April 24, 2012, 10:53 PM
All the league has to do is take away the instigator penalty.  As long as you have some dumb ass enforcer out there that'll beat the crap out of some moron that takes a cheap shot then the cheap shots stop.  Ever see Gretzky take a couple of shots to the head?  Why not?

The red line might help with open ice hits too, but I'm still of the opinion you should skate with your head up, not down.

And yeah, I get the issues with fighting and enforcers having issues but three cases over a summer is correlation, not causation.

Post by: Morgbug on April 27, 2012, 06:26 PM
Meh.  It stands to reason it would stay in the U.S.  More teams alone stacks the odds.  Deeper pocket owners too.

The fabric of the league has changed dramatically for players too.  They used to want to play to win and weren't so concerned about the market they were in.  Not so anymore.  Canadian franchises have a distinct disadvantage in that respect.  Maybe not Vancouver.  Toronto shouldn't but they've been mismanaged for so long that it's become less desirable.  Montreal and its language issues makes it less desirable.  Winnipeg/Edmonton are probably on par, objectively speaking, with Columbus and Buffalo.  Calgary?  Not sure what their problem is.  Proximity to Edmonton perhaps.

It's all the same to me.  The Bruins had more Canadians on their team last year than the 'Nucks did, so the Cup still finds it way home with the players.

A few more years of declining U.S. dollars coupled with subsequent increased taxation and maybe we'll see a shift.   :P

As hard as it is to score in hockey anytime, when you have a lead and 10 seconds on the clock you should win 100% of the time without exception. Anything is pure CHOKE.

I love when Torts tells reporters to stop coaching. I always thought he and the New York media would be a bad combination, but as long as they keep winning he can do what those of us who have to deal with the press would love to do and tell them to buzz off when they try and stir the pot.
He also tries to deflect attention from the players loss by making the story about him when they lose. I really don't think it is ego, he believes that keeps the pressure off the locker room.

I expected 6 games, which it still could go that way, but it's not looking it after tonight.  Sometimes a hit like that sparks a team to win one or two though.  I'm sticking with 6...  I honestly thought Brodeur might collapse.  Goaltender is rough, and I figured his age may catch up to him, but I'm shocked honestly.  Dude's gotta be in awesome shape for any age, much less his.

It's not been the most interesting series though, even the close games.  I've only been watching in bits.

6 isn't out of the question now.

On a side note, has anyone else noticed the hot blond behind the Devils' bench? Wowza.

Congrats to the Kings and their fans.  No, really.

The burning question though is why is no one mocking Philadelphia mercilessly?  Hello?  Carter?  Richards?  Turfed.  Bad team environment.  Yeah, about that....

Oh, people are.

Congrats to the Kings, and wow, I wish I'd put something on this.  :-\

Scuderi's the man by the way.  Loved him when he was here, and hated to see him leave.  He was a classy guy here, really respectful and a fan-fav.  I liked Sykora too though, but I was pulling for Scuderi.

Congrats to the Kings. It was a fun series to watch. Too bad so much of tonight's game came down to that 5 minute major. There sure was some great goaltending in the series.

Yep, congrats to the Kings.

Always nice to see a franchise get its first championship, as long as it's not the Philadelphia Eagles.
