Hall of Justice / DC Universe Classics Wishlists
« on: April 21, 2008, 03:52 PM »
Since it seems quite a few of us here are interested in this line, or have even transitioned into these from Marvel Legends, I was wondering if it might be fun to post some "Top 10" lists after seeing what's coming from the DCUC line for the rest of this year (or at least most of it).  What are you "most wanted" figures after what we've seen is already on the way?

There is still a lot to see obviously, since the line is just beginning, but here's ten off the top of my head that I'd really like to see done:

1. The Flash (Wally or Barry - or both)
2. Green Arrow
3. Zatanna
4. Martian Manhunter
5. Black Canary
6. New Joker
7. The Question (Vic Sage)
8. Poison Ivy
9. Dr. Fate
10. Captain Marvel

Lots of Others: Poison Ivy, Beast Boy, Alfred the Butler, Commissioner Gordon, Starfire, Ra's Al Ghul, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Vigilante, Kalibak, more Batman villains, etc.

The Original Trilogy / Uncle Owen/Aunt Beru and C-3PO
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:40 AM »
I'm sure this has been discussed before (probably long ago), so this isn't a big new revelation or anything - but while watching ANH on Spike this weekend, it got me wondering after the "purchase of the droids" scene, why doesn't Owen (and later Beru) remember C-3PO (or R2-D2 for that matter).  In AOTC, C-3PO is obviously already at the homestead (albeit in his silver form), and R2 visits alongside Anakin and Padme.  Sure, I know that protocol and astro droids are common in the Star Wars "world", but wouldn't the voice/attributes/personality be recognizable on 3PO in particular?  Has anything ever been mentioned regarding this by Lucasfilm or others?  Just curious.

Jocasta's Reading Room / Incredible Cross Sections of Star Wars
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:18 PM »
I was just looking for any opinions anyone might have on this book, The Incredible Cross Sections of Star Wars (The OT Edition).  I've thumbed through it long ago at a bookstore, but just haven't ever picked it up.  Is it a pretty good book?  I've got the various visual guides for the characters and everything, but I thought this might be a good book for the vehicles.  Any opinions?

The OTC/VOTC collection was a great time for OT fans, with a lot of nice figures (even with all the repacks in that collection).  We got two nice Yoda figures, and both have their positives, but I was curious which Yoda you guys prefer.  Do you consider either of them the "definitive" OT Yoda?

The Original Trilogy / Return of the Jedi - 25 Years Later
« on: April 8, 2008, 12:16 PM »
I always enjoy hearing people's discussion, thoughts, and opinions on the movies - and with this being the 25th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, I thought it might be a good time to bring this movie up as well.  It seems like ROTJ is usually looked at as the weakest of the OT, and ranked below the PT for some people as well, but I guess I have fond memories of it because it was not only the first time I saw Star Wars in a theater, but its also the first time I remember going to a movie as well.  Because of that, I have a little more of a connection to this movie.  I can see why the Ewoks may annoy some people, but I never had a big problem with them - particularly as a kid.  Overall though, I really enjoyed many parts of this movie - the whole Jabba's Palace/Skiff sequence, the Speeder Bike chase (which seemed so cool back then too), and the DS II lightsaber battle.  Also, because of my age, this is where the majority of my vintage figures came from at the time.  My two favorites were Han Solo (with Trenchcoat) and Jedi Luke Skywalker.  I can still remember buying those - with allowance/chore money - one at a drug store in a town about 20 minutes away, and one at our local "variety/mom and pop" store.  Back to the movie, I also enjoyed the further expansion of the universe with new aliens like Admiral Ackbar, Jabba the Hutt, Nien Nunb, Gamorrean Guards, all the Jabba's Palace creatures, and even the Ewoks.  It might just be me, but even with the great advances in CGI these days, I still kind of like the traditional, old-school, costumes/masks.  I still think that ROTJ is the only time Jabba looks "right" to me.  What are your feelings on Return of the Jedi?  A worthy capper to the Saga, or a weak link?

After the discussion going in the TPM thread, I was wondering what everyone thought of AOTC at this point.  Like TPM, I re-watched this movie for the first time in quite awhile over the weekend on Spike TV.  Also like TPM, there is a lot of things that bug me, and some stuff that I really enjoy.

I remember coming out of the theater after seeing this for the first time, I thought it was great.  It seemed closer to "Star Wars" to me, maybe due to the presence of the Stormtrooper-like Clones, as well as ties to Boba Fett and other OT concepts.  The vehicles started looking more OT-esque as well, different from the sleeker/shinier looks in TPM.  My friend and I left the theater saying that the last 45 minutes or so (if I remember right) were amazing.  Pretty much from when Anakin and Padme get taken into the arena to the end - good stuff.

I pretty much feel the same way now.  I really enjoy the Arena battle(s), as well as the lightsaber battles following (although I always wished that Anakin/Dooku would have been a bit longer).  It was a nice setup to the Clone Wars and ROTS, and like Jesse mentioned in the other thread - it would have made a nice first movie, setting up a Clone Wars centric Episode II.  Dooku was a pretty cool villain, and I did enjoy Jango even if he was essentially just "cashing in" on the popularity of Boba Fett.  He still looked pretty cool to me, and Temuera Morrison was pretty good in the role.  I don't have quite the problems with Hayden as many others do, as I think he is a decent actor and has been good in other non-Star Wars movies I've seen.

On that topic though, some of the Anakin/Padme stuff was cringe-worthy to me.  From the first viewing to the current one, the "fireplace" scene dialog and the running through the grassy hills stuff was just not for me.  It really seemed cheezy.  I remember someone saying in an older thread one time that the original Clone Wars animated series seemed to portray the love story better with a few words or "looks" than the entire AOTC movie did.  I could see that.  Other than that, I don't know that I have a ton of other major complaints about the movie.  Jar Jar was really toned back, and there's things that could be changed, but the love story stuff didn't work for me as well as I'd hoped.  Also, it might just be me, but for some reason some of the Obi-Wan/Anakin banter really sticks out to me.  Mainly the way that Obi-Wan, when he's "scolding" Anakin, always calls him something that seems excessively long.  "My very young apprentice", "my young padawan", and things like that.  It just stands out to me as sounding strange for some reason.  They are supposed to be "good friends", and for the most part that didn't seem to come across all that well to me.  Anyways, what are your thoughts on AOTC now?

Watto's Junk Yard / Vacuum Cleaners
« on: March 31, 2008, 10:03 AM »
I was just wondering what sorts of vacuums you guys have.  We've always bought what I guess you'd call the "cheaper" versions, usually under $100, and the one we're currently on seems to be on the downslide.  The Mrs. wants to get a "good" vacuum (she has her eyes on a Dyson), but we've just never spent that much on a vacuum cleaner before.  I was curious what types of vacuums you guys have (or have had), and what you might recommend.  Does anyone here own a Dyson, and if so, are they any good?

Watto's Junk Yard / Question for DVR/Tivo Users
« on: March 28, 2008, 03:25 PM »
Just curious, for those of you who have a DVR, Tivo, or some other digital video recording device - do you save things on there for an extended period of time?  Do you just use it to record shows you might miss, watch them, then delete them?  Do any shows or movies get "saved" to rewatch several times, or do you keep things cleared off?  Just wondering.  We've had a DVR for a couple of years now, and it usually ends up getting fairly full by the end of the TV season.  We tend to keep some shows (The Office is one), and rewatch them periodically - or through the summer/until the DVD is released.  Although this isn't necessarily the case with The Office, it seems like many shows get "replayed" less and less, instead replaced with some new reality show during the off months.  Anyways, do you keep your DVR clear, or do you save things every so often?

Jocasta's Reading Room / "Tales of the/from the..." Books?
« on: March 24, 2008, 04:20 PM »
I just had a quick question regarding the "Tales of the/from the" books.  I've often heard books like Tales from Mos Eisley, Tales from Jabba's Palace, and Tales of the Bounty Hunters talked about quite a bit, and I was wondering if any/all of them were a good read.  I've really only read the Thrawn trilogy as far as Star Wars books/novels go (I also have the Han Solo trilogy, but haven't finished it yet) - and I've been looking for some other OT-era based books to check out.  These seem to be talked about a fair amount, and I was wondering if anyone had opinions on them.  Thanks for any advice.

TV-9D9 / Star Wars on Spike TV
« on: March 19, 2008, 11:36 AM »
Since this covers the entire Saga, I thought I'd post this here.  Its sort of old news coming back up again, but Spike TV will be airing the entire Saga starting in April.  Star Wars.com has an article up featuring some ads that Spike TV has been showing on billboards, etc. advertising the Saga (beginning April 4th the way it looks).  Even though we all have these on DVD, there's something about them showing on TV that I've always liked.  I can still remember getting excited seeing ads on NBC (I believe) showing Return of the Jedi when I was a kid :P.

The Original Trilogy / Was the 30th Anniversary a Big Enough Deal?
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:53 PM »
I have to say I thought about this topic after listening to a podcast that discussed the same thing, but do you think that they (Lucasfilm) made a big enough deal out of the 30th Anniversary?  Sure, there was the Celebration (which it sounds like some people felt was the weakest of them all so far), the Rose Bowl parade dealy, and they had the "30th Anniversary Collection" action figure line, but it seems like there could have been more done.  Heck, in the TAC line alone, we still ended up getting as many (or more) prequel/clone figures than stuff focused on the actual 30th anniversary of ANH.  Also, I think it might have been kind of cool to put A New Hope back in theaters for a bit, and follow suit for the anniversaries of ESB and ROTJ (and down the road, the prequels I guess).  I guess it wouldn't necessarily have to be for the 30th Anniversary (25th might have been better even), but it just seems like they could have done some more things like this - but maybe its just me missing the OT goodness :).

I remember as a kid, when I first saw the OT movies (ANH and Empire in particular), Vader really seemed like a "bad guy", and to some extent, "scary" to a little kid.  Not the "terrifying" type of scary, but more like there's no question he's the baddest guy in the SW universe.  Granted, the OT is a story of his redemption (ROTJ in particular), but overall there was no question he was the main SW baddie.

Did the portrayals of Anakin/Vader in the prequels change how you look at Vader at all?  Does it make the character better/deeper, does it weaken the character and make him less of an imposing figure?  Overall, did the prequels change your perception of Vader for better or worse?
