Other Toy Lines / Re: Zica Toys 3.75" Sectaurs Figure Line
« on: July 29, 2019, 11:44 PM »
I had sort of forgotten about these until they were on BBTS front page today when I stopped there. Looks like they are on the way soon-ish. Honestly I never had these as a kid, but was at least aware of them. After learning more about the original line over the past few years, I'm kind of interested in picking a couple up. I'm just a sucker for 80s nostalgia toylines.

Post SDCC (and yearly) bump. With possible changes in the upcoming Star Wars lines (less 3 3/4"), looks like things could be changing for many...

Star Wars

Vintage Collection - I'm in as we get them, specifically OT stuff and new figures that get sprinkled in.

Black Series - possibly the future (and present?) of Star Wars collector figures at retail. I'm selective here, and will continue to be. Right now I have three floating shelves for BS figures, and can only display so many, so I really think about each figure that comes into the house. OT focus here as well, and any face paint upgrades we get. Likely in for some Rise of Skywalker figures, and the Mandalorian.

Marvel Legends - What I've primarily been buying the last couple years, to be honest. There is just so much if it, so I don't get everything, but quite a bit of it. Hasbro has really been killing it on this line, and I've been loving the MCU stuff as well as the classic comic looks they put out.

MOTU Origins - Not out until the Fall of 2020, but I'm likely in on this. Already have a collection of Classics that I'm very happy with, but the combination of vintage style/scale, a somewhat reasonable price, and a retail presence sounds like a fun thing to get in on the ground floor with.

Otherwise, that might be about it. I honestly don't have a ton of room left to display things, so I've gotten a lot more selective with "other" stuff, particularly modern. I have been picking and choosing from the Transformers Siege line, I really like those. I still work on vintage toylines like GI Joe, TMNT, Super Powers, Secret Wars, etc. when I have the time/money.

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?

I was thinking about this a little more today, and although it is sad in a way, I think I am ok with it. TVC is really what I primarily collect Star Wars wise, and it appears that it is continuing for now. Looking back at the past couple years' releases, it looks like we could see roughly 12-25 figures per year if they continue on a similar schedule (and a mix of new/repacks). All this reminds me of one of my favorite eras of my collecting, Power of the Jedi. It had a similar number of releases/schedule, and although prices are higher now, it was a much more "manageable" collection for me back then.

Still not sure how long a line like this will have a place at retail, but we will see. I still think they sort of want, or would just be ok with, a lineup of "5 inch GOA is for kids, Black Series is for collectors". Either way, definitely a new era of Star Wars collecting. One thing I kind of like about that GOA line, for kids in particular, is they look like fun toys. Like, toy toys - the type a youngling can grab, bash together, go on adventures in the backyard, etc.

As others have said, with Jayson's great reporting I guess I kind of felt the "tremor in the force" here. I was really hoping they would at least hang on through Rise of Skywalker, because it does seem weird to have a consistent line of figures for two thirds of a trilogy. Also, although I know kids aren't necessarily into Star Wars figures like previous generations, as someone with a daughter who had pretty complete runs from Force Awakens and the Last Jedi, it's kind of a bummer she won't really get to "complete the set". Admittedly she is less interested in toys now, but I'm sure there are other kids all over who are still young enough to be.

Outside of that, I guess I get it to some extent. I think, at least in the Marvel side of things, those 5/6" $10 figures gather way more interest than any 3 3/4" stuff they ever had. Plus, it just seems like Star Wars collecting or interest - particularly outside of the collecting community - is really in the gutter right now. I know I haven't seen anything move at our stores, for a long time. Anyways, overall a real bummer, hopefully TVC can continue on for awhile longer. I could see that line going "fan channel" or something eventually too.

I just feel like maybe all the secrecy hurts Star Wars a bit. I get that a lot of it is out of Hasbro's hands, but just in general. I mean, there is a level of secrecy with Marvel stuff too, but Hasbro is able to basically be the talk of the show with their Legends reveals each time. Often 20-30 new figures shown in some instances. If they can't show movie stuff, they unleash a bunch of new comic based figures. I don't see why they couldn't just mix things up unveiling some OT and PT stuff, or just characters they missed from Force Awakens, Last Jedi, Rogue One, Solo, Clone Wars, or Rebels.

I still kind of wonder about the basic line of 3 3/4" stuff. I don't know that we have had much in the way of rumors for that, where everything else has been covered. I think TVC will continue for the time being, but I could also see that eventually moving to "Fan Channel" or some sort of online exclusive type of thing. I personally love the scale/line, but it sort of seems to be becoming more niche. I could see them wanting the primary lines being the 5" and Black Series.

On the other side of the Star Wars presentation, Marvel Legends hit it out of the park once again. Among other things they announced:

MCU Avengers wave with Endgame Thor BAF
Squirrel Girl with Scooter

Cosmic Ghost Rider
X-Men 3 pack (Cyclops/Jean/Wolverine)
Polaris/Havok 2 pack

Morph
Nate Grey
Dani Moonstar

And more....

Woof. I mean I get that a lot is held back for Rise of Skywalker, Mandalorian, and the whole triple force Friday thing, but yeah that has to be one of the biggest snoozers they have had. Fett helmet looks cool, and the Black Series Dagobah Luke shows promise....but they couldn't have had some non new media reveals? A couple OT figures, or PT figures, or something from the previous Disney era movies? Seems like they could have planned out to have something to show.

I'm sure there will be a lot of hate for the 5" line, but I kind of get it. Although it isn't exactly the same thing, those $10, 6" Marvel figures seem to sell like gangbusters to the kiddos/parents. Not to be doom and gloom, but I wonder what that means for the 3 3/4" basic line? Seems like a lot of different lines to have out at once otherwise.

HA! Compared to the Rancor, Torture Droids and Bib Fortuna, another Luke is the least exciting thing they could have thrown in there!

I'd like to see those as well, but honestly I'd be down with an all new Jedi Luke with face printing. I don't know about everyone else, but I have a tough time leaving the pre-face scanned figures in the display. The newer ones are worlds better in that category.

Huge mistake not having anything to show for this line at SDCC, Todd.

So they didn't show anything for this license either? That is disappointing. Hopefully something pops up later. Did they at least show something from Harry Potter?

Awesome pics of new Stranger Things figures from McFarlane at SDCC!

....is what I wish I was saying this morning. Way to completely waste all the momentum of the new season guys.  ::)

We just picked up our first few in this line recently, as we let our daughter watch the entire series with us this summer, and she is totally obsessed. Got her the Season 3 Eleven for her birthday, and we also got a deal on the Ghostbusters 4 pack. I kind of figured if she got into the figures and wanted more we would be way behind, but not really. No Steve? Max? Jonathan? Nancy? Billy? Seems like now would be the time to really push things out.

I bought in on Classics really really heavily, so I’m really not interested in starting another line, even if it is at retail. I haven’t bought anything Super 7 has offered, other than He-Ro and Eldor. I’m hoping I can pick up the Classics I missed for a reasonable price now, but we’ll see. I’m more interested in toys for the movie, and I know how much trouble Mattel has at retail. Just trying to avoid another cluster**** like the 200x line.

When I first came to post this here, I thought "I bet Ben will be excited by this news too", but I get where you are coming from. I was "all in" on Classics for quite awhile as well, before finally dropping the sub and trying my luck getting the random figure here or there as they were released (not great luck overall). I think, all in all, I got pretty much the majority of characters I would want for me to be "complete". Off the top of my head, I just missed out on Jitsu and Kobra Khan. The only Classics I've bought since the switch to Super 7 are the Filmation He-Man and Skeletor. I've also been picking up the 5.5 "retro" figures from them, but thinking about stopping now knowing these are in the way. (Plus, $20 often seemed kind of steep for those).

Although I still have my Classics on display, I think at $15 each I am likely in on these. I just love the vintage homage look to these (packaging as well), and I think they look pretty fun. I'll have to see where I'm at with collecting in a year, but I'm interested so far. Two more reveals today, Evil Lyn and Teela.

Probably more news to come this weekend, but if anyone has seen the Prince Adam/He-Man SDCC exclusive from Mattel, it is apparently a previews of what is to come in 2020. Pixel Dan posted a pic of a vintage inspired Skeletor in the same style that is apparently part of a RETAIL line titled MOTU origins, $14.99 each. I'm definitely interested....

The Vintage Collection / Re: Big Items of the Future!

Honestly, this is more what I expected to be next with the whole HasLab thing. I have a few Transformers, primarily vintage or from the recent Siege line, but I can't say I'm interested personally. I just don't have the budget for this stuff often (actually relieved in a way that we get a break before the next Star Wars one, unless that gets announced next), and I'd rather save for a Star Wars project.

I don't collect Transformers either... but 8000 at $600 for a line that's collected less than Star Wars (as far as I know at least) seems like a tall order.

I've been kind of curious about this as well. Is Star Wars still the big dog among a collector fan base - at least for things offered at retail? It is difficult to tell these days. Some exclusives, particularly online, sell out quickly...but the retail environment, at least locally, seems bleak. Same things always on the pegs, regardless of scale/line, and nothing seems to be moving (3 3/4" in particular). Transformers may not be there, but what about something like Marvel Legends? Honestly, that seems like the biggest game in town as far as Hasbro lines. I don't see why every project necessarily has to be a big/expensive item. I get that it is things like this that won't make it to retail (and also grab headlines). I mentioned it before, but it could possibly be a good outlet for the return of GI Joe (3 3/4", 6", whatever), since apparently it isn't retail viable without a movie.
