Kubricks / Re: Kubricks and Minimates
« on: April 12, 2004, 10:16 AM »
Well, I took my first jump into "mini-fig" land this weekend.  We were shopping, and there was nothing new on the Star Wars pegs, so picked up a mini-mate set at TRU for around $8.  I bought the four-pack with Spider-Man, Venom, Green Goblin, and Damaged Spider-Man.  I should have never done this, because now I want to get more of these little guys.  They are very cool little figures, nicely articulated, and they score big points with me because they don't take up too much display space.  Plus, even though they could be cheaper, I don't mind paying around $2 a figure.  They had a couple of different types of packaged sets there...ones with plastic windows, and oens with solid boxes, with pictures on the front.  Are the solid boxed ones the newer releases (or how they release them now?).  The one I got was a solid box (they didn't have any Spidey ones in plastic window form, mainly just Daredevil sets.  Anyways, I hope this hasn't started another addiction, but I already want to go pick up an X-Men set next time we're there :).

Saw 2 of these at TRU this weekend (in Sioux City, IA), but passed as well.  I just don't have the room for it, and I guess the FX X-Wing is good enough for my collection right now.

« on: April 12, 2004, 10:01 AM »
More of the same around here, after checking out Target and TRU this weekend.  Target re-stocked (since last week when I was there) with the Hoth and Tatooine waves, that had at least one of each figure from those waves.  Otherwise, it was just more of the Animated Clone Wars (Wave 1 only the way it looked).  At TRU, the basic figure selection was poor, consisting of mainly R-3POs, Bail Organas, and Ack Med-Beqs.  They did also have 3 each of Jabba and his Denizens, as well as 2 Wampas.  I also saw 2 of the new X-Wings on the shelves there, and several 12" figures collecting dust.  I saw a little boy of about 7 or 8 ask his mother for the X-Wing, only to be turned down.  Disappointing to see that, a child actually interested in Star Wars but unable to get it.  Otherwise, still no sightings of Yavin/Jabba's Palace/Star Destroyer waves around here really.

Yeah, I see your point.  Red Skull was the worst offender of the chase figures.  The ones that are just "variants" with different paint apps, or perhaps a different head, etc. aren't quite as bad since there is at least another more readily available version out there too.  I certainly hope Star Wars doesn't go this route, its hard enough to find the figures themselves the way it is! :)

Gentle Giant / Re: Bust Ups!
« on: April 9, 2004, 03:56 PM »
GalacticHunter has an article up detailing the first wave of these (for preorder at AFX apparently).  Although they might not have the detail of the slightly larger "mini busts" from Gentle Giant, this does look like it could be a neat little line...and much more affordable.  Haven't decided if I'm going to get them or not yet, but they don't look too bad.  The first wave is "Heroes of the Rebellion".  You can check out the article here:

GH's Bust Ups Article

Here's a look at Wave 1 (Ceremonial Han, Ceremonial Luke, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Yoda, and C-3PO)

Anyone else interested in these?  I've always liked the other Gentle Giant busts, but have never gotten any due to the price of them.  The size of these, along with the lower price point makes them tempting to me.  However, I have these Unleashed "statues" sitting here as well, so maybe I don't need more :).

I'm disappointed that ML 8 is getting pushed back until next year (I'm guessing, or end of this year), because that had some of the figures I was looking forward to the most (Doc Ock, Iceman, etc.).  I did read on the TNI boards that the "art deco" is referring to variants like Cable and Dark Phoenix, so just changes in the paint...or...art, I guess.  Jay C from those forums posted that over there anyways.

I'm with those of you who aren't fans of "hard to find" figures.  I'm certainly not a completist with this, or any other line, but I could see where it would be really frustrating.  Maybe re-releasing past chase figures will help some people find those.  The color/paint variants wouldn't be so bad if it were the collectors that could find them in the stores.  However, they all end up in seller/scalper hands usually, and end up being on ebay.  Like you said Morgbug, they end up in collections, but for a ginormous markup.  Its too bad this trend seems to be passing on to a variety of lines now, with that Unleashed Red Clonetrooper showing up this week as well.  Not a trend that needs to spread :).

Thanks for posting Mikey.  I guess I'm kind of disappointed that we won't see those Wave 8 figs this year, but not overly surprised.  I guess it is good news that Toy Biz will be releasing some of the chase figs, it will make it easier for some to pick those up now.  I wouldn't mind getting a Maskless Wolvie if I happened upon one.  So I'm guessing Wave 8 will be the first part of 2005 then?  I got into ML around the time of Wave 3, so I'm not sure, but how many waves did TB normally release in a year? 2?  If so, we're at least getting 3 now.  Plus, I guess its fine with me since I wouldn't have the funds to keep up with both Star Wars and ML if Legends came out with as many figs as Star Wars does.

The Digital Bits rumor mill has some information on the possible revamping of the Special Editions for DVD release.  You can check out the story here:

Digital Bits Star Wars SE Rumors

They have a picture of what could possibly be new footage of Ian McDiarmid replacing the actor/monkey that was used in the holograph in ESB.  Interesting to say the least.  They also mention the CGI Jabba being fixed up in ANH.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Vintage OTC Figures
« on: April 8, 2004, 02:23 PM »
Thanks for the pic Scott, the Stormtrooper really looks amazing.  I still like that Yoda, this picture makes it look even better than the last one I think.  Metal chain on Vader would be pretty cool too.  Even further examples of why these figures shouldn't be limited....especially the Stormtrooper.  Who's not going to want tons of those guys if they are made like the SA Clone was?  Not that the commtech one is a bad figure, but this one looks like it could be even better.

From what we can see, it looks to be just as great as the rest of the VOTC we've seen so far.  It is hard to tell for sure, but it looks like SA Clonetrooper-type articulation, and the sculpt looks nice as well.  I'm actually surprised we haven't seen pictures of wave 3 yet, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Chewie, R2, and Boba as well.  Thanks for the pic Scott.

If anyone cares, it appears that KBToys.com is blowing out all of their MOTU stuff.  Not too much there for figures, but what they do have are all $3, as well as Castle Greyskull for $10.  They also have some other miscellaneous items, you can check them out right here:

Just thought I'd post that apparently the Spider-Man 2 trailer (2 1/2 minutes long) is set to air tonight during "The Apprentice".  We don't watch this show, but according to SuperHeroHype, the trailer is supposed to air around the 40 minute mark of the show.  It will also be online later on tonight.  I'm pretty excited for this movie, and anxious to see the full trailer.

Also, SHH also had a story that Ron Perlman appeared on the Best Damn Sports Show and said they just heard this morning that there will be a Hellboy 2.  I haven't seen the first one yet, but from what I have heard it has gotten pretty good reviews.

Also, filmforce has word today that movies centered around Black Widow, as well as Deadpool, have both been confirmed to be in the works.
