Some more GHIII info hit the net today:

Guitar Hero III Hands-on

A couple of videos showing the new (different) look:

First Guitar Hero III videos are ... different

And the first look at the new Les Paul-style guitar:

Guitar Hero Les Paul Controller Impressions

That's a non-playable prototype, and it looks a little funky with the all-white faceplate, but there will be removable faceplates, which I'm sure will look more Les Paul-ish.

Other new stuff on the guitar:

*Detachable neck - not only for ease of storage and travel, but also for possible double-neck extensions in the future
*Totally wireless
*Two different strap knob positions
*Toned-down fret button colors for a more-realistic look

The real reason probably has to do with money.  You know, smaller package means less material and freight.  Fit more on the shelf too.

That's a really good point and you're probably right on the money.  The boxes for the other guitars are huge, and they'd be able to save a considerable amount of space (and money) by shipping the guitars in two pieces.

Pearl Jam's "Even Flow" has been confirmed to be in GHIII.

Horrible song, horrible, horrible band.  Good thing they don't have any fans around these parts.

Rock band will be sick, 10 frets?? Awesome apparently the extra frets are for solos :D

The Stratocaster controller will have 5 additional fret buttons located further down the neck to be used in special solo sections. Additionally, the controller will feature an effects pickup switch. Harmonix has confirmed Guitar Hero guitar controllers will be compatible with the game, as well as other third-party guitar controllers. The company has also said that Rock Band will also support the use of additional third-party controllers, and, should Activision (the current publishers of Guitar Hero) request it, they can make the Rock Band guitar controller work with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.[citation needed]

Rock Band's microphone instrument will be similar to the model used in the Harmonix-developed Karaoke Revolution games. According to an article in Game Informer, "Vocalists sing along to the rock tunes as they always have. Additionally, a phoneme detector will pick up the individual vowels and consonants." The microphone can also be used as a tambourine and cowbell when there are no vocals.

The drum controller is similar to the DrumMania arcade game, and will be based on striking one of 4 foam pads, representing the snare drum, tom-tom, hi-hat, and crash/ride cymbals. The set will also feature a kick pedal for bass drum and will ship with a pair of authentic drumsticks. The legs of the drum peripheral can adjust in height or be detached if the user wishes to place it on a table-top, while the kick pedal can be adjusted laterally. Harmonix representatives have said on numerous occasions that "If you can play the drum parts on hard, you can pretty much play the drums [in reality]."

Can't wait to pick this up  :D

Their loss.

If this one sells the way the last one sold, I think they'll still squeak by. . .

Oh, it will sell.

They could make more profit if they shipped it in a smaller package, that is all.

That's true, but by the same token, I'm sure they don't mind the extra visibility at retail that the enormous packaging provides, especially with the competition they'll have this Christmas, in the form of Rock Band.

And speaking of Rock Band, ten new tracks were revealed recently.

So here's Rock Band's confirmed track-listing so far:

1960s
"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones

1970s
"Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who
"Mississippi Queen" by Mountain (non-original recording)
"Suffragette City" by David Bowie
"Paranoid" by Black Sabbath (non-original recording)
"Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Φyster Cult
"Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones
"Highway Star" by Deep Purple

1980s
"Tom Sawyer" by Rush (non-original recording)
"Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi
"Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash
"Epic" by Faith No More

1990s
"Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters
"Enter Sandman" by Metallica
"In Bloom" by Nirvana
"Vasoline" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Say It Ain't So" by Weezer
"Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Sabotage" by Beastie Boys

2000s
"Main Offender" by The Hives
"Go With the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age
"Reptilia" by The Strokes
"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet
"Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
"The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails

There's a little bit of overlappage there with GH3:  Cherub Rock, Mississippi Queen, Sabotage, and Paranoid.

Where should a newbie start in regards to Guitar Hero?  Should I buy the GH2 set with game and guitar?

Is wireless the way to go?

What system will you be playing it on?

Will there be anyone else playing with you, or will you be. . .  playing with yourself?

And you may want to wait and see how this whole GH III/Rock Band thing shakes out over the next couple of months, too--'cause they both have pretty impressive song lists of their own.

As far as guitars go, the Gibson SGs that are packed in with GH and GH II are pretty much identical, except for color.  Both are wired.

I can't comment on Red Octane's wireless PS2 guitar, as I haven't used it.

There will be a new wireless guitar packed in with GH III, the Kramer Pacer.  I haven't heard too much about that one yet, but the guys at ScoreHero (a big GH fansite) got to try out the new wireless Les Paul controllers (for the next-gen systems) and seemed to think that they were much-improved over the wired SG controllers.  The same may be true for the PS2-exclusive Kramer, I don't know.

There will also be a Fender Stratocaster controller packed in with Rock Band, but that's all I know about it.

The new guitars may be another good reason (along with the new songs) to wait and see what happens with the new games this fall.  But if you don't care about that stuff, and are itching to get started, you can't really go wrong with the GH II bundle (I don't know if the first bundle is available anywhere anymore--probably not).

Amazon's got the GH II bundle for $69.99 right now with free shipping - I believe it sells for $79.99 everywhere else.  Not a bad deal at all.

Thank you kind sir for the info.

I've seen the track listing for Rock Band and it too, is impressive.

Do we know if the GH 'guitar' will be compatible with Rock Band?
