RotS Figure Impressions?
« on: April 2, 2005, 03:24 AM »
What do you think of the figures you bought?

So far I've only opened Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, and Grievous, and I'm actually having a blast with these action features I so professed to hate.

I think that by making the features activated by squeezing legs makes these far more enjoyable.

Anyway, I gotta open the rest of my stuff.

Thoughts?

I am 99% happy with the line so far, with having 35 different regular figures so far... can't really complain.

Just wanted to see a bit more out tonight as far as vehicles/playsets and a better selection instead of a ton of #'s 1-12.  Maybe I'll find more variety tomorrow.

I am ecstatic...I didn't buy any obis, maces, R2s, the first Ani, vader, and some others, but overall...these are great!

My son loves r2 and 3p0, I like thm as well, think they are well done. Thought the paint apps on r2 as far as the 'dirt' is only on the feet but not on the middle leg is a little weird but not distracting.
3p0 is probably the best I've seen.
OPened deluxe anakin vader and he's pretty cool. getting the vader head/cape to stay on requires making sure it is pushed all the way on.
Opened chewie and tarful, look cool and chewies 'wookie rage' feature works ok, he can still pose is arms with articulation at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. the knees can turn but don't bend?!
they can't hold their guns too well though.
Then I opened the anakin color change lishgtsaber and it is the best thing so far. Has a cleat blade and a strong enough light to be either red or blue. simple switch on the handle changes the color.
Still have the clone troopers, obi-wan and grevious and dooku to open.
overall, I'm satisfied. :)

i'm pretty content.  Some things are better than I had hoped, and others are about what I expected.

Deluxe figures were a bit "meh" to me...  I did get Greivous though, and he's rather interesting, and fairly poseable too.  A SA Greivous with 4 arms that actually folded into just the two would have been better, especially if the feature could've been kept, but it's ok.

Most other deluxe I'll wait on though, save for the Clone Specialist coming up.

Basic Figs I got:

-Blue Senate Guard (x2)...  This guy kicks a lot of ass.  My gripes would be that his pistol's squished, and his rifle feels like it's made from the same material as a condom.  Beyond that, a fantastic army builder.  No Red Guards in my haul though.

-Count Dooku...  FANTASTIC figure.  Very nice and I love his left hand doing force moves.  He's real close to being a flawless figure.  Wish his saber blade came off and hitched to his belt though.

-Alya Secura...  Another great figure.  Can hold a saber with 2 hands (I wasn't so sure when I saw her arms).  I'm not wild that her arm articulation is limited, especially the left, but she's great to me.  Far superior to her Saga incarnation....  Speaking of, I wholely now expect to do a Geonosis Arena shelf to put my old Saga Jedi on.  I appreciate the pre-posed figs NOW more than I did before.

This is why Hasbro NEEDS to articulate figures like this.  I think it only enhances the pre-posed one's value to people.

-Ki-Adi Mundi...  Holy hell, he rocks.  His ankles make him a little tougher to pose than some (boil/freeze may fix that), but either way he's great.  His robe is one of the best in the modern line, period.  I love putting it over his cone like he's out in the field fighting the war...  Maybe on a rainy world somewhere.  Just neat to get that.

-Clonetrooper...  Better than I imagined.  The waist articulation does bite, and I think simply a SA Clone sans feature would've sufficed.  He does have 2 guns though, and he's incredibly poseable and sturdy.  Great figure.

-Tarrful...  Sucky weapon, bad articulation (I don't get it really, he looks like he has articulated knees but he doesn't).  He's probably my only disappointment, but he's still not horrid.  He's average, and for the Saga line he'd have been pretty good actually.

-Mace Windu...  Sink the shoulders in and he's damn near Dooku quality.  His leg articulation bites though of course, and those shoudlers are awkward.  His sculpt is better than I thought, but he does have a shine too.  I dig him for what he is.  A poseable Mace.  His feature's not bad either.

-Luminara Unduli...  More Jedi greatness, and in a gausey skirt!  Very poseable, very cool.  Can't complain.  I don't think her saber hooks to her belt though.  :(  I dunno why some this feature is there and others it isn't.

-Lava Vader...  He's an exclusive...  He looks nicer than I thought, but if i wasn't a completist I'd have slept in Saturday morning.

What the hell is up with C-3PO's nubby left thumb and the 10-degrees-below-zero erect nipple on the battle droid?

It is for you to attach the "blast effect" to make it look like "he done got shot"!

I've only opened the Clone, Dooku, and Grievous' Bodyguard.

Not much to add about the Clone and Dooku. They're both GREAT figures, simply great all around.

The Bodyguard is a good fig overall, but improvements could be made. I think we could use an SA version later down the road, because this thing would be great with leg articulation. I like the arms how they are, but the wrists should be articulated without an action feature for a perfect version. ;)

I was also talking with Famine earlier, and he suggested that a varient bodyguard be made with the cape over the left soldier, just so the guards would be in allignment with Grievous when guarding him.

Also, let me say that the action features are FAR better than they were 3 years ago.

Color me more than impressed, even with the Collection 1 stuff.  I was a little worried after reading Brent and Jared's thoughts on them.  I passed on almost half of the first 12 but I think I bought everything else through 32.

The great...The Jedi.  Great figures all around, even Mace.  I'm mad they didn't include a Cloak.  But he's even a nice figure.  The other semi-duds are Plo Koon and Saesee Tiin.  They should have cloaks like Ki Adi.  But even so, they are all great.  And its a welcome sign, especially after the crap fest that were Saga Jedi figures :-X  Saesee gets further demerits for mixing plastic and soft goods in two different colors in a BAD way.  If you are going to do this, do it in the same color so it doesn't look goofy

The best of the bunch though is Agen Kolar, he's IMO the best figure of the first 32.  Great robe AND a soft good application underneath with tons of articulation.

I'm also really digging The Emperor and Chancellor Palpatine.  I'm a little worried about Dooku and Palpy clogging pegs along with Padme and Mon Mothma in a few months but these figures are amazing.  Also high on my impressed list is Dooku, he's amazing and shows what can happen when they spend some time on something (LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE FOR M WINDU ::))

The good...I actually think the Clone Trooper is OK.  The shoulder has the same crap that the Mace does, but its not horrible.  I also dig the two Blue and Red guards  C-3PO is good too, probably the best, but still not what we all want :-\  Tarful is also a nice HUGE figure.  I'm not the wookiee nut most of the rest of you guys seem to be but he's great.  I don't like the painting they've done on the Wookiees though across the board.

The OK...Mon Mothma, Grievous and Guards, Padme, the guy from NYPD Blue, they are boring but decent.

The bad...R2, the only figure I didn't really care for at all.  I wasn't going to buy it but I couldn't resist for some reason.  It sucks, IMO.  Stupid action feature and a bad paint job (yellowish highlights)

That's not bad, and to be honest, for the most part I'm pretty easy going on stuff.  I have the Jedi lined up on my computer desk and all of the lightsabers sticking up all over is a neat effect. :)

I bought all of the Jedi except for Anakin 1, Kenobi 2, Yoda 1, and Mace Windu.  I actually screwed up and bought Spinning Yoda, Kenobi 1, and forgot about Windu.  I will have to go back and get those later.

I really like all of the Jedi.  I am not disappointed at all with any of them.  They look solid to me.

I like the Clonetrooper much more than I thought.  I bought 2 of them.  Chewbacca and Tarful are fine with me.  Vader is much better than I thought as well.   Sidious is nice to.

I just don't have any complaints with what I bought.  Granted I have not opened them yet.  I may save some for autograhps at C3.  I have not decided that yet.  I don't really want to plunk down money for the photos when I have something for them to sign allready.

Anyway, they were all good to me.  I stayed away from the BD, SBD, R2-D2 and several others.  I may go back later in the year or get them on Ebay someday.

All in all I really like the ROTS figures.  Much more so than AOTC or Ep1.  Even the Lava Vader was better than I though.

Amazingly, both versions of Yoda have been the only disappointments with the Basic figures for me.  Everything else has been either really good (as in every last one of the Collection 2 figures I have), or better than expected (every other Collection 1 figure).  Yoda just falls short.  The first one looks ridiculous (and Yoda with a Big Ass Cannon is funny in and of itself), and the second one is awful.

As far as unintentional humor goes, the "Jedi Kick" Obi-Wan has been the source of much laughter this morning, and the "Wookiee Slayer Concert" Chewbacca is fun as well.  And no matter how hard I try, I can not figure out why Mace is pouting.

The Obi-Wan Deluxe figure, on the other hand, is simply horrible.  This has Force Flipping Saga Deluxe written all over it, and I really hope they don't ship anymore of them, as this is going to be the only Deluxe figure that won't sell to anyone with a passing interest in the film.  Anakin/Vader is a lot of fun, although I still can't figure out why his Anakin cloak is so huge.  Grievous is very cool with a lot of posability despite the feature, and Sidious is awesome.  It took me a while to get the head to work right (it was apparently offline inside and I had to fiddle with the arms to get him to look straight ahead with either face), but once I did, it's been nonstop fun.

So, taking into account the first 28 figures and the first four deluxe figures, Hasbro's done a great job on all non-little green man figures.  Thumbs up!

Both Super Battle Droid and Battle Droid legs are still real bendy. Thankfully the BD comes with a (really cool) base. That's the only real disappointment in the figs so far, along with lightsabers being a little bent.
