Vintage Kenner / What causes fading/greying of figures in package?
« on: November 9, 2005, 10:42 PM »
Here's a Vader with the head faded I'm referring to.  I'm curious what causes this in such a specific and limited part of the figure.  I've seen it on numerous figures of late and mostly they seem to be on twelve backs or at least Star Wars carded figures.

Anyone out there help?

Other Collectibles / Star Wars mini-mates?
« on: November 8, 2005, 08:49 PM »
Ignore the delusional aspect of this auction but click on the bottom picture in the auction.

Mini-mates Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade?   Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're customs as well, probably using a Jean Grey head for Mara, but they're reasonably well done.  Maybe some photoshopping for effect as well, no reason for the name plate to overrun the logo.

Now that the new Saga numbers are showing up it would be mighty helpful to have a numbered list stickied to the top for reference purposes.† Reasonable?

I've a few figures on trilogo cards and I do like them, but I worry about finishing that collection off.

I picked up a boxed X-wing in very nice shape so I'm contemplating vehicles, but I want minty boxes as well.  I'd probably dump most of the modern vehicles to get there as well.

Creatures are of interest, boxed as well.

So, what would you proceed to chase down next?  Suggestions please, all are valid.

Modern Trading / Loose R2-B1, Holo Sidious (Ep I) for trade GONE
« on: August 23, 2005, 09:35 PM »
Happy to report a trade has been made :) these are no longer available.

R2B1 and holo Sidious, as the title says.† Both are loose, mint and complete.† I'd like to trade based on fair value and would prefer sending both to the same place since the R2 is too big to go in a bubble envelope.† But if you only need one, so be it.

Looking for the following in return (no, not all).†
Evolution clone set
#33 green commanders
#6 shock troopers
AT-RT drivers - either paint app.

These can be sent loose to me to save on shipping (I'm in Canada, eh.)

Vintage Kenner / Speculate for me
« on: August 19, 2005, 11:16 PM »
Nice title, eh?

I've noticed JD is starting to get some hits by names I see infrequently, but know have some good opinions and knowledge (infinitely more than I) on the subject of vintage items.  Now despite the title this isn't a thread about finding bargains and flipping them for profit.  Rather it's the converse.  I'm interested in people's opinions on whether the movie year is driving vintage prices up?

By way of example I'm currently trying to wrap up my vintage, loose Droids collection.  I've picked up a few of them and I'm down to the following I need:
Sise Fromm
Kez Iban
Kea Moll

I'm sorely wishing I'd picked up Kea Moll first, simply because she seems to have skyrocketed in most auctions.  You can still pick her up for $20-30 but many auctions top $50 (most, but not all are carded).  I'd passed on auctions about a year ago that ended above $15.  Should I regret it, or should I just wait it out?

My real reason for asking is that I think my focus in the coming years will be increasingly vintage oriented.  I'd love to own a set of 12-backs or I may decide to try and finish the trilogo set (perhaps with some rather pricey exceptions).  I just love that trilogo stuff (must be a non-US mentality).

Anyway, I'd love to hear what people have to say.  Is the market artificially inflated now.  Will the vintage material hold it's value 5 years out (I ask because I can wait that long to buy stuff) or will it potentially hold or even go up?

Other Toy Lines / Are action figures dying?
« on: August 18, 2005, 10:02 PM »
We've heard it and said it before with respect to Star Wars or just in general.  Retailers sometimes suggest it, the section size dwindles, kids buy video games.

What precipitates the question is a store I was at today.  Local collectibles shop that splits its sales between 12" military figures and action figures.  His military sales are fairly stable and it's a pretty mature market from what I can tell, most customers are older than me.  On the other side I was amazed by what I could find and his prices have started falling.  This is an entirely huge range of figures, many lines I would collect is space, $$ and marriage weren't an issue.

But so much was just sitting there.  I don't go in often, just when I need to find something and don't mind paying above normal retail.  By way of example it's where I found my Unleashed Stormtrooper for $5 extra.  Still has IG-88 and Aurra btw.  Basically I make it in there about once a month or so.

Lots of red clearance stickers were to be found - star wars, Simpson's and many others.  All of Alex Ross' Justice League series I was sitting there.  The latest Buffy and Faith figures were there, not really moving well.  Family Guy series II was marked down (he never got in series I).  LOTR was sitting there, the latest wave, hadn't sold in a month, not even the Eye of Sauron.  The examples go on and on, never mind all the examples of sportspicks that were sitting there.

What's your take on it?

Modern Classifieds / Loose Vehicles for sale - POTF2/POTJ
« on: August 12, 2005, 10:38 PM »
Hey y'all, I have a couple of vehicles to unload.  Loose, mint, complete.  They've been stored for the bulk of their life in plastic tubs, but have been on display on occasion.  No dust on them and I can provide pics if you like.

POTF2 Tie Fighter $12
POTF2 Millenium Falcon $25
POTJ Tie Interceptor with pilot $35

Shipping is extra and will only be what it costs me.

I'll happily take trades as well, just work out the retail price of the figs and you'll have it figured out.  Clones are best - repaints of #6, 33, 34 or the AT-RT driver.

Watto's Junk Yard / Surge in spam?
« on: August 12, 2005, 11:44 AM »
Anyone else seeing it?

For the longest time I received next to no real spam at my hotmail account.  The occasional thing went into the junk mail folder, but in the last couple of weeks it's skyrocketed.

In general I don't post my hotmail account anywhere.  The only recent sign up I've had is with robby.jp and there seems to be some correlation with the timing of that but I think that's just coincidence.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing?

Modern Classifieds / Clone wars animated figures for sale
« on: July 29, 2005, 10:28 PM »
Hey guys.  In an effort to pare some stuff down, I'm going to sell off some extra things.  The first to go is a set of animated clone wars figures.  They're all on mint US cards and are as follows:

Clone trooper white
Durge white
Count Dooku Mace Windu
Asajj Ventress
Anakin Skywalker (first)
Obi Wan Kenobi
Yoda
ARC Trooper season III packaging

I'd like to sell them as a lot, simply asking regular retail plus shipping.

I'll trade them off as well, for newer ROTS figures (new clones, higher numbered figures, multi-clone packs, etc.)  I can probably find a red clone to go with the set as well if you want one.

cheers.

JD Sports Forum! / JD Fantasy Hockey 2005
« on: July 29, 2005, 04:45 PM »
Since I don't want to run a football leauge, I'd be willing to run a hockey league on JD/Yahoo.† I'm presuming they have hockey on Yahoo, we've typically used a different online site, but for consistency and since we're running other pools on there, I thought it simplest to stay.†

Usual point schemes are remarkably easy except for the goalies:

1 goal = 1 point
1 assist = 1 point

Goalies:
1 goal = 5 points
1 assist = 5 points
win = 2 points
tie = 1 point
shutout = 3 points.†

In the past, we've run goalies/shutouts at 5 points but that tends to make them the best players on the team in terms of points.† A 3 point line for a shutout means a good goalie is still important, but not absolutely critical.† I'm open to all manner of suggestions regarding goalie point scoring schemes.†

Typically we draft 10-12 players, one of which must be a goalie.† We can increase that number if you like, but we usually only use three spares (two skaters, one goalie) in addition to whatever we're allowed to start.† Sort of a draft 'em and live with 'em unless they're hurt scheme.

Seriously.

All the news that Hasbro is seemingly releasing for ComicCon has my head pretty much spinning:

-More cup sets with rehashed figures
-Another holo figure
-Lava figures/exclusives
-Clone pilots that were never in the movie
-Clone repaints in bad case assortments
-Box set after box set with odd inclusions (clone pilot?)
-New, largely unnecessary and mostly repaint vehicles

Really, I was looking forward to a bit of a slow down on Hasbro basic figures (regardless of what packaging) but clearly that's not to be.  Worse, they seem to have no concept whatsoever regarding what is or isn't sitting at stores.  I have no qualms about reshipping Darth Vader or any clones (aside from a pilot) but is Grievous, Tarfful, Anakin or Obi-Wan remotely hard for anyone to find???

I just don't get the logic behind these and if they were to be easy to find, packed well (in the sense of assortments) and sensible figures, then fine.  But the only redeeming aspect is about 1/3 of the figures released are new army builders.  The rest is largely undesirable crap.  The kid portion of the market has moved on to Fantastic Four, so all they're doing is pissing off collectors, what many people consider to be the real market anyway.

I've moved from carded completeist to loose completeist to loose incomplete getting what I want.  I'm finding vastly more appeal in products from Gentle Giant, Sideshow, Master Replicas, Kubrick and others.  Don't get me wrong, I still like the 3 3/4" scale but half the fun is finding stuff myself.  I haven't bought anything for myself in better than a month, Scott finds my stuff for me.  It's easy, uneventful, cheaper and while I'm tremendously appreciative of the help, it's no fun.

When you start adding up all those factors, I wonder why I bother.  There's clearly lots of other stuff to collect, albeit more expensive, but if we're looking at 200 figures over a two year span that would leave me with a fair bit of money to divert elsewhere or simply not even spend.  Is anyone else out there in the same boat?
