Thanks Joe!  Looking forward to trading with ya' again sometime...   8)

Watto's Junk Yard / The Official Shark Thread
« on: July 14, 2003, 02:54 AM »

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always been fascinated by sharks.  When I first saw Jaws way back in 1977 on "ON TV", that fascination turned more specifically towards Great White sharks (and Tigers to a lesser extent).  I think they're the most amazing and breathtaking creatures on the planet, not to mention one of the most misunderstood.  A buddy and I have long been planning on trying to do a Great White Shark diving expedition (or maybe just one from on a boat) up near the Farralon Islands near San Francisco, where these sharks are quite abundant due to the huge seal population.  I also came real close to dropping about $800 on a huge, and very real Megalodon tooth last year...

One of my favorite weeks of the year for TV is fast approaching as well...  SHARK WEEK on the Discovery Channel!  It's airing sometime in the first half of August.  So, anyone else have a thing for sharks too?  I know at least David does...

Saga '02-'04 / Toys R Us FINALLY has NEW figures!
« on: July 10, 2003, 01:41 PM »
My wife just called, and told me she just hit the motherlode at a Toys R Us!  Looks like their store is finally back in the game now!  Patty scored the Wat Tambor, Padme, Coleman, and Maul/Han/Leia/Jango rehashes.

This is the first time either of us have seen any new figures at TRU since about November of last year!  Looks like it's time to put their stores back in the hunting rotation again finally!   8)

The Prequel Trilogy / Episode 3 running time...
« on: July 2, 2003, 04:43 PM »
As mentioned by dustrho right here...

Rick McCallum basically said they're planning on EP3 to be the shortest of the previous two movies.

All I have to say is that this is absolute CRAP!  I've been ranting for quite a while about both of the prior Star Wars prequels not being long enough as it is, and now this?!?  Ridiculous.  With the blockbusters nowadays often running for a solid 2.5 - 3+ hours long, I think this is an absolute rip-off by Uncle George.  McCallum had already mentioned over at the Official Site not long ago that Ep. 3 would fall into the 2.25 hour time frame like all the rest - nothing more, so I already knew I was going to be fairly disappointed.  But for it to be the shortest of them all, when there's so much to cover, characters to develop, so many questions to answer and loose ends to tie up for the entire Saga...  That's just pathetic!   >:(

Hopefully once they really get into the filming of Episode 3, which started just last week I think, they'll realize they're going to have to step up to the plate and pack in some more time to make the movie and Saga flow (and end) better and just to be a better movie.

Here's a link to one of my prior rants on the matter over at RS after the AOTC release...
AOTC running time... I feel a bit cheated!!!

Watto's Junk Yard / Your tales of the strange and bizarre...
« on: July 2, 2003, 03:59 PM »
I figured we could share whatever weird/strange/bizarre stories are going on in or around our lives here...

What prompted this thread, was that last Tuesday, a local college called my wife to inquire as to whether she was available to teach one of their summer history courses.  Since she's already in the process of teaching a couple summer classes elsewhere already, she asked when their summer session was starting, and they replied that it actually started a day earlier.

It turns out that the original professor for the class had a heart attack and died the first day of class...  In class, right in front of the students...   :o  Needless to say, a number of the students wound up dropping the class due to being too freaked out by the whole episode.  Turns out this man was also a teacher during the regular school year at the high school where my father in law is the principal, so it affected both Patty and her Dad, who this guy worked for...  Pretty strange.

So Patty decided to go ahead and teach the remainder of the class, as strange and unfortunate as the circumstances were...   :-\

And in another bizarre story, I actually went to a wedding last night.  Yeah, a TUESDAY night wedding.  Go figure...  Kinda weird couple (she's my co-worker), who wanted to get married at an old club in Hollywood (El Sid).  Needless to say, 3/4ths of our company is hungover today, on a Wednesday.  Good prep for the Holiday weekend, I suppose...   :P

So, anybody else have some strange things goin' on in their lives...?

Saga '02-'04 / MOVED: Clone 3-pk ...does it suffice?
« on: June 29, 2003, 01:43 PM »
We're in a bit of a pickle with this thread...  It's got serious crossover potential with the Saga collectors with it's Clonetroopers, but since technically it's on a Clone Wars card, we're going to finally go ahead and stick it over in the Clone Wars forum where it really belongs.  Hopefully that's cool with everyone!

Highly recommended to all, this great guy is!   8)

Just wanted to wish a Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there - my own, as well as any of our JD members who have kids of their own as well!

I thought it would be cool if we could each share a nice memory about our Dads.  A Star Wars related one would be even better, but isn't necessary.  Here's a recent favorite one of mine...

My Dad is a pretty serious guy, who's mostly into serious "guy stuff" like sports, tools, cars, etc.  He's never expressed much of an interest at all in my Star Wars fandom or collecting ways, even though he knows it's one of my favorite hobbies.  I've always wondered if it in fact embarrassed him just a little...

Well, about 3.5 years ago, not long after the release of Ep. 1, the wife and I headed out to Scottsdale, AZ like usual to spend the Holidays with my family.  I'm a nitpicky freak who always prefers to give out detailed Christmas lists to the family of what I'd like for presents, rather than having them trying to just "wing it" and pick out something for me on their own that they think I'd like.  Hate it when they do that, 'cause I always just wind up returning it.

Well, 3 Christmases ago in the middle of the family's big gift giving session, my sister brought over this giant package to me from my Dad.  Immediately recognizing that this couldn't possibly be anything off of my detailed list, I was a bit concerned about what might be inside.  I opened it up, and found a complete set of all 12 Phantom Menace cup toppers from the Taco Bell/KFC/Pizza Hut promotion that was being run several months prior!  I was flat-out dumbfounded.  Not so much about the fun cup topper gifts in and of themselves, but moreso due to the fact that my Dad told me he had spent nearly a month driving all over town to all the different restaurants trying to complete the entire set for me (even Dad knows I'm a completist for everything).

Even though these items weren't on my Christmas list, didn't cost much, weren't too HTF, and would've probably never found their way into my collection otherwise, the fact that my Dad specifically went SO FAR out of his way to try to "connect" with me, and show me that he's cool with my Star Wars fettish, and even helping to add to my collection in the process with this complete set of fun collectibles, was just about one of the coolest things that he's ever done for me (and he's done a LOT of great stuff for me).  While buying me a nice new car was totally awesome, the Ep. 1 cup toppers gift was just so much more of a personal and meaningful thing to me (though not quite as practical  :P).  It's something I'll definitely never forget it.  Thanks for the cup toppers Dad, but thanks even more for the meaning behind the time and effort spent in putting this great gift together!  It really meant a lot to me and I'll never forget it...
