The Original Trilogy / Re: Force lightening
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:15 PM »
Yoda has seen one Skywalker fall to the Dark Side, and with dire consequences.  He knows who he is training.  And he even asks the spirit of Obi-Wan if Luke will complete his training, suggesting that otherwise he may rush off an be tempted to somehow join his Sith father.

These reservations that Yoda may have about Luke, and the relatively brief time that he had to train him are the likely reasons why Yoda never trained him to defend himself against Force lightning.

Another reason why I think Yoda wouldn't have taught Luke about Force lightning?  It's very simple:  Anakin.  Yoda knows that Luke is Anakin's son.  And he openly expressed reservations of Obi-Wan's Force Spirit about training Luke, citing similarities between Luke and Anakin.  So with that in mind, why would he teach him about Dark Side powers when he's still a Jedi apprentice?  Why would he risk that when he saw the slaughter that Anakin led at the Jedi Temple?

JD Sports Forum! / Re: NHL Offseason

Bah, enough ranting.  Anyone figure the players are clever enough to understand this: Lock out clock.  Whatever Fehr put in the kool-aid is pretty potent

I've only been checking in on this thread once in a while since I'm not a serious NHL fan.  But when I saw Donald Fehr's name mentioned, I had to do a double take.  I had no idea that this guy had become the head of the NHLPA.  I knew him from his role with the MLBPA and the last round of collective bargaining talks between baseball's owners and the player's association.

Fehr definitely plays hardball with the owners.  He did that in the MLB talks.  And that's no doubt why the NHLPA sought out his services.  But I can't help but think that his style of negotiations may not work with the NHL owners.  No offense to hockey fans or players, but baseball has a significantly larger audience in the U.S. than hockey.  And with that larger audience and popularity comes more leverage.  But for the NHL, I think Brent hit the nail on the head with how the owners regard their teams.  The NHL may have over-expanded the number of franchises, and contraction is looking like a real possibility.  Or at least retreat to safer northern / Canadian markets like Quebec.  Fehr's negotiating style could elicit a response from the owners that may not be to the ultimate benefit of the players.  He needs to get them playing & working again.

Received my 2-pack from TRU.com today. Glad that it got here okay, but still a bit annoyed that I never got any kind of an email confirmation or shipping notice. I can't recall the last time I ordered something from TRU online, but this definitely cause for concern.

We saw very little lightsaber training for Luke.  He had a couple of lightsaber training sessions with Obi-Wan Kenobi, but those were really the most basic of lessons.

And then there was Luke's training in TESB.  From the scenes that Luke has with Yoda there were no mentions at all of Force Lightning.  He also didn't pass the mirror test in the cave when confronted by the Dark Side vision of Vader.  Had Luke continued his training as Yoda requested and not gone to Cloud City to confront Vader, then perhaps he would have been able to teach him defenses against Dark Side powers.  But that seems to be a more advanced lesson.

Yoda did warn Luke in ROTJ.  He explicity stated "Do not underestimate the powers of the Emporer, or suffer your father's fate you will".  Palpatine comes across as a frail, old man.  But Yoda speaks from experience.  He fought the Emporer in ROTS, and he had a difficult time with Palpatine's Force Lighting.  He was knocked across the Emporer's office by a first blast.  And in the Senate chamber Palpatine hit Yoda with such an intense blast of Force Lightning that it knocked Yoda's lightsaber from his grasp.  Eventually he is able to handle the Force Lightning, but it proves difficult for even Yoda.  Only Mace Windu seemed to have the lightsaber skills necessary to withstand Palpatine's Force lightning.

As for Luke and the Force Lightning at the end of ROTJ?  I think he didn't see it coming.  He seemed to think that he had defeated Vader, and by refusing the Emporer he thought that he had defeated him and redeemed his father.  The Force Lightning attack by Palpatine was definitely the catalyst for Vader's redemption.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: The biggest "missed moment" of the prequels:

I never really saw a significant link from the AT-RT to the AT-ST other than they both have 2 legs. Rather, the AT-ST looks like it was the result of a combination of the concepts behind the AT-AP and the AT-RT. The AT-ST has the size and crew protection of the AT-AP, but the 2 legs and mobility of the AT-RT.

And I've got to say, Jon Favreau might be an interesting guy to take on Star Wars.  After seeing what he was capable of doing with Iron Man and Iron Man 2, my opinion of him changed dramatically.

I'm not sure you'd still think that was a good idea if you'd seen Cowboys and Aliens.

I saw it.  Visually the movie was good.  The script?  Eh.

But since when was any Star Wars script all that strong?  At least when it came to dialogue?

I definitely agree on the Y-Wing.  The backstory on that fighter had established that it was an older model, and that link back to the end of the Clone Wars would have been a nice connection.  It's nice that the Clone Wars series had the opportunity to correct that discrepancy, but a movie appearance would have been far cooler.

As for the ARC-170?  It's design definitely shows a common lineage with the X-Wing.  But I think that we saw something interesting in ROTS when the ARC-170's got taken out by the Droid Tri-Fighters.  The bigger design wasn't necessarily better.  And perhaps it took the 20 years between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE to make those leaps forward in design that led to the Z-95 and eventually the X-Wing.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Vintage Collection Wave 17 (2012 Wave 7)

Got my BBTS case yesterday.  And I was genuinely surprised to see how small the actual Hasbro case was for this wave.  I've been way too busy to open ANY of these figures, so that's gonna have to wait a little while.  But it's definitely reassuing to finally have these in hand.

I'm not really high on EV-9D9 8D8 resculpts for some reason....not sure why

I think Droid Factory will take care of these next year.

I think at least one of these would make for a decent Droid Factory B-A-F.  And in that case, I'd lean towards EV-9D9 since that droid has some dialogue.

That little Wookiee made me laugh.  Anyone else remember all this nonsense from the Hasbro Q&A a few years ago...

Apparently Lucas has something against Wookiees being Jedi.  There's supposedly an edict for the EU that the only Wookiee Jedi will now and forever be Tyvokka and Lowbacca.  And apparently this extends to Hasbro not making a Tyvokka figure.

I guess LFL changed their mind and Wookiee Jedi are cool again... maybe now we can get our Tyvokka action figure?  :P

I'm definitely happy to see the about face on the whole Wookiees as Jedi thing.  And Gungi was definitely one of the high points of the episode for me.

As for the episode as a whole?  I felt much more positive about this one episode than I did about the 4 part Onderon story arc. And to know that this story arc with the younglings will continue?  This season is starting to look a little better.

Is anyone else as disappointed as I am in the make-up/casting for Kili (and Thorin to a lesser extent)? He is way too human looking. It's as if he was cast that way purely to put in a good looking character. Dwarves aren't supposed to look like that, where is his big beard or bulbous nose?

He looks completely ridiculous when pictured next to the rest of the dwarves.

It honestly doesn't bother me that much.  And from I've seen of all of the dwarfs, it looks as though their facial features become more pronounced as they get older.  That is actually something that happens naturally in people:  their noses and ears continue to grow as they age.  Why wouldn't the same happen to dwarves?

Thorin, Fili and Kili look reasonably alike, and I appreciate the effort there.  The makeup department seems to be trying to make the members of the same dwarf families look as though they're actually related.  And they've done that with the other dwarf families, too.  Gloin looks very much like Gimli from LOTR.  And there are resemblances between Gloin, Oin and Balin.  Again, they're all family.  It's that level of effort in the filmmaking process that I think really make a huge difference in creating a world like Middle Earth.

The TRU stores near me are pretty well stocked up on MTT's.  But then, it seems that TRU stores are starting to get up to holiday stocking levels.
