30th Anniversary Collection / Re: Cutting back in 08?
« on: December 20, 2007, 09:16 PM »
I already cut back to a degree this year - I don't pick up any more than four of any army builder to open. So at most I get 5 (one MOC, four openers) of any one figure. With all of the re-releases and re-paints, I might drop my army builders down to only 3 (one MOC, 2 to open) of each. I know my wife would be happy with that choice.

As far as next year goes, I love it when Hasbro spends resources on stuff like the Might Muggs - they are an EASY pass for me.

If I'm not impressed with the Droid Factory stuff, I'm probably going to be able to drop things down to only picking up 2 (one MOC, one opener) of each non-army builder. But like this year with the coins, if I want two of each wave's BAF then I'm going to maintain my current level of 3 (one MOC, two openers) of each figure. Getting 3 of every figure might even push me towards only getting 3 of each army builder too.

Scorponock Droid looks pretty.  Never knew about that one.  What make that Battle Droid Ultra?  His rib gun and spurs?

Looks like he also has a shoulder canon.

I would be psyched with either of these as BAFs.

30th Anniversary Collection / Re: 2008 Rumors and Speculation
« on: December 19, 2007, 04:35 PM »
Like you mentioned, if they would debut figure waves/etc. on their site, and not act like these toys are national security issues, they wouldn't have nearly the problems with rumor lists and speculation most likely.  Its part of the age we live in now with the internet, but if they kept their site a little more update with news and not just new games or things like that, it would probably help the situation a bit for Hasbro.

I totally agree with this and I have always felt this way with regards to Hasbro releasing information as soon as they possibly can as opposed to waiting for Toy Fair or the Summer Conventions.

First Argument: They don't want fans to be disappointed if something doesn't come out
This makes absolutely no sense to me. Ok, so they said a Yuuzhan Vong figure was coming and they decided to push it back to next year. BIG F***ING DEAL! I mean, we all got to drool over the Force Unleashed figures at Toy Fair in Feb 2007 and what happened to them? They got pushed back to being released in 2008. I saw all of the collectors out there committing suicide or sending death threats to Hasbro over this delay, it was truly a dark day for collecting indeed.  ::)

Second Argument: They don't want other toy companies to know what they are up to, afterall selling toys is a competitive business
Ok, this one is b.s. too. When I was a kid and my mom asked me which I wanted for my birthday, of course I said "Star Wars figures!". I did not care that they had less articulation than GI Joe, I liked Star Wars and that's what I wanted. My mother and I did not jump from Star Wars to GI Joe because Hasbro had out-innovated Kenner with their line of army-based 3.75" figures. There is only ONE maker of 3.75" Star Wars figures. Hasbro has the monopoly on the Star Wars franchise. No one competes with them directly. Kids who are fans of Star Wars are not going to want Ben 10 figures because they "look cooler" - if they think Ben 10 is cooler than Star Wars then you've already lost their purchase, it had NOTHING to do with what innovations Ban Dai put into their P.o.S. toys.

Third Argument: We need to hold information back for Toy Fair
To this, my response is simple.

Why?

With all of the fan forums out there, you couldn't BUY the kind of marketing research we provide them. If Hasbro were to post pictures of the AT-TE today and a list of features of the vehicle. They could scour the boards between now and Toy Fair and everytime they speak with a buyer for a major retail chain, plop the stack of message board comments a mile high and say "all of these fans are EXCITED about this vehicle and 95%+ of them don't seem deterred by the $100 price tag - you can't loose with this piece!" The converse could work to their advantage as well. Propose something like Star Wars Customs/Choppers or whatever those turds were called, see all of the negative feedback on the collector boards and perhaps you might decide to rethink them since it sounds like they might rot at retail (which the DID!), perhaps you pull them and don't even bring the line as a discussion point with the buyers.

I can come up with MANY more examples like this where showing us stuff BEFORE Toy Fair could help them better sell aspects of the line that might otherwise be a tough sell with the buyers for the chains.

Perhaps I'm over simplifying things a bit, but I do not understand why they have to react like they do. How about just coming out and saying "Yeah, we're planning on doing A, B, D, E, F, H, I but items C, G & J have been held back for re-imagining/re-work to see if we can improve on the concept." No harm, no foul, no one boycotts Hasbro, cause afterall, they are the ONLY game in town when it comes to Star Wars 3.75" action figures.

30th Anniversary Collection / Re: 2008 Wave 2 - The Force Unleashed
« on: December 19, 2007, 01:35 PM »
I am quite puzzled by this case pack-out. I would have thought that they could have put together a case like this:

2x Imperial Evo Trooper (#0809)
2x Imperial Jumptrooper (#0810)
1x Maris Brood (#0811)
2x Battle-Damaged Darth Vader (#0812)
1x Rahm Kota (#0813)
2x Emperor's Shadow Guard (#0814)
2x Juno Eclipse (#0815)

This would have made A LOT more sense. Vader is always popular. Collectors are going to want multiples of the troopers, shadow guard and Juno. The unique Jedi being 1-per-case would help them sell well which seems to be a slight challenge for Jedi that were not in the movies.

I'm hoping that there will be a revision wave that is more in line with the counts I have listed above.

Guys, I don't think you can analyze a sentence written by an RS reporter and get a clear explanation of what to expect  ;).  I think Hasbro would be insane to release 30 different pieces for one BAF- it would be a logistical nightmare for them.  I still think there won't be more than 6 pieces in any given BAF.

Agreed.

If there are 30 figures that will be part of this sub-line concept. Then I think that will mean we will end up with anywhere from four to six droids (if you get all 30 figures)

They have had BAFs in Marvel Legends that span across 8 figures - but all eight of those figures/pieces were still self-contained to a specific wave. So perhaps one wave might have seven figures and therefore the BAF will be made up of seven parts and then in a smaller wave of only five figures, that BAF droid will be made up of only five pieces.

These pieces plus the stands will be the gimmick that replaces the coins that appeared in this year's figures.

This is a pretty smart move, they're counting on idiots like me who filled two coin albums to want to build at least two of each BAF so that means getting more money out of us per each wave.

30th Anniversary Collection / Wal-Mart Exclusive 30AC Comic Packs
« on: December 19, 2007, 11:24 AM »
Cutro, over at RS, has reported that the comic packs have been pushed back until January.

Good to hear that these have been pushed back to January.

Plenty to pick up this month already.

I'm hoping these won't be too hard to find. I want to score at least two of each. If I can grab a third Commander Keller/Marine set I will.

Hit the mother-load of Wave 8 at Toys R Us last night.

Scored enough figures to cover both myself and a friend, here's the run-down of what I grabbed:

5x Jango Fett w/Poncho & Removeable Armor
5x Fireside Padme Amidala
5x Voolvif Monn
10x Destoryer Droid (Droideka) w/Half Energy Shield
10x Clone Trooper (Training Fatigues)
10x McQuarrie Concept Rebel Trooper

Kind of an expensive evening.

All I need are five Hawkbat Battallion clones and I can finally put the TAC collection to bed.

The Legacy Collection / Re: 2008 Wave 3 - ?
« on: December 16, 2007, 10:48 AM »
While wave 3 couldn't include the AOTC versions of Owen and Beru, I wouldn't mind seeing at least a new version of Uncle Owen in Wave 3. Another cantina alien (or two) would be nice as well.

I definitely think a Vader in this wave would be overkill especially since every time they seem to do a ROTJ wave there's Vader/Anakin in there in some form or another, so I'm expecting a Vader in Wave 4 if that's a ROTJ wave.

While I'm okay with them completely ignoring EP1 in the basic line in 2008, I'm hoping that in 2009 they at least dedicate a pair of waves in celebration of the 10th anniversary of TPM.

Picked up the WalMart Exclusive Jabba's band/performers "battle" packs today.

The presentation on these is nice.

AAAAGGHHHH!!!!  Wow okay I started breathing again.  Thing of beauty Daigo.  I noticed one of the Tycho bodies has a Rebel Honor Guard head on him, any mods to that or could it just pop on?  Any other heads that fit the body without mods?

Agreed - what a great custom diorama.

I was so excited about it, the first thing I did when I got home was to try the head-swap between the Rebel Honor Guard and Tycho - alas, Daigo must have modified the Rebel Honor Guard head because unless you make the hole for neck ball deeper in the head, it looks like the new figure has a giraffe's neck!

Oh well... leave the customization to the talented people I will....

Here's a scary thought, what if the third set is how they'll be putting out the Secret Apprentice?

Before you discount that idea, remember that the Clone Wars vol 2 sets had unique characters to the animated line in them. Granted they were old body sculpts with new heads, I'm sure they could cobble together a version of the Secret Apprentice from previous figures and just sculpt a new head.

Hopefully these two sets will be it.

Like the sucker that I am, I will be getting two each of the Jabba's Band Sets (if I can find them). I'm kinda digging the cardboard playset value of the packaging - it might go well with the pop-up Jabba's palace diorama.

3058
Maybe these will be available on the release date of Force Unleashed? Didn't all the other WM sets get released on a specific SW DVD release date?

That has been the track record with the WalMarts by me. Each time the DVD came out there was a aisle display with the 3-packs. The size of the display piece varied depending on the release (large for the second DVD of the OT release, small for Clone Wars Vol 2 DVD release).

Hopefully it will be the same with these.

Despite your "Debbie Downer", realistic view of things trying to squish my dreams, I will continue to hope that they find a way to release the rings separately, because I really don't like the idea (whether practical for Hasbro or not) of rebuying all the JSFs just to get the rings.   :-\

I too am not relishing the idea that I might be having to re-buy all of the JSFs only "this time with rings!"

However, the reality is that Hasbro spent a good amount of money sculpting and tooling the Hyperspace Ring, so they are going to use it more than just this one time.

The sensible thing would be for them to come out with one more new design (such as Aayla Secura's JSF) and include the Hyperspace ring with that as an exclusive to either TRU or Target. Then on top of that offer JUST the hyperspace rings for Plo Koon's, Kit Fisto's and Saesee Tiin's JSFs as an online exclusive with HasbroToyShop.com.

A two-pronged strategy like that would increase the ROI on the Hyperspace Ring development. I also think a lot of collectors who already have those three JSFs would be more open to the idea of just buying three Hyperspace Rings as opposed to re-buying the vehicle.

I don't have a lot of faith that Hasbro would be so kind though - so I'm kinda expecting a re-release of the Plo Koon JSF w/a Hyperspace Ring, exclusive to Target at some point in 2008, perhaps even as a Clone Wars line exclusive.

Picked up two each of the Turbo Tank, AT-AT and Snowspeeder Transformers.

I've only opened the Turbo Tank/Commander Cody so far. Not very pleased with how that one turned out. Hopefully the AT-AT will be better. Snowspeeder looks interesting.

Also got my order from HasbroToyShop which included 2x TAC Jawa, 1x TAC Moisture Vaporator w/Luke, 1x TAC Han w/Torture Rack, 2x 7th Legion Clonetrooper, Titanium BSG Set from SDCC, Titanium AT-RT (Camo Deco), and Titanium White/Gray Darth Vader TIE.
