Your Picks: Five Movies
« on: November 18, 2005, 03:04 PM »
This is inspired by an episode from this season's "The Office" in which they played a game called "Desert Island", and talked about picking things like "if you were on a desert island and could only watch one movie the rest of your life....", etc.  Expanding that a little bit, if you could only choose five movies to watch, which five would you pick?  Up to you whether you want to use the "Star Wars Saga" or movies individually, same for other franchises.  I suppose the right way would be to use the movies individually, but that makes it tougher.  For the sake of argument, we'll say you can use any movie, regardless of if it is available on DVD/VHS, etc.  I'll have to give this some thought myself, but I just wanted to get the ball rolling and see what some people's choices would be.

I'd have to pick all educational films about island survival, etc, etc. If I had any spaces left after that, I have to go with Bill's choice and pick some porn.

Unless of course this is one of those islands where you are stranded whatever celebrity you selected years ago. In that case...I guess I could skip the porn.

Top five movies in other words. That's tough. I'd have to go with:

Empire Strikes Back
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Army of Darkness
Shawshank Redemption
Star Trek III: the Search for Spock

Just bumping this up to see if anyone else wants to chime in.  I changed the original title, so it doesn't have to be a "desert island" scenario :).  Basically, if you had to pick five movies (most likely your favorites) to watch the rest of your life, which ones would make the cut?  I'm leaning towards making lists without the thinking of "I've seen this movie so many times I have it memorized, so I'll leave that one off" - which five movies would you want to watch and rewatch the most?  Again, if you want to leave "franchises" (Star Wars, Indy, Harry Potter, Alien, etc.) as one you can, or you can split them up (tough, but probably more "accurate").  Anyone else have lists?  I'm still thinking about it here, because honestly the movies I watch the most now (and are my favorites) are often parts of franchises.

I'm all over this one:

1. Star Wars Saga
2. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
3. Shawshank Redemption
4. Braveheart
5. The Usual Suspects

Honorable Mention:

-Caddyshack
-Jaws
-Matrix Trilogy
-Tombstone

I know I have more, but those are the ones that I ALWAYS watch when they are on.  I've cheated with the franchises, but at least with LOTR, it's one continuous timeline broken up over 3 movies  ;).

I'll go with the "Cheat" of listing a couple Trilogies...

1.  Tombstone
2.  The John Ford/John Wayne Cavalry Trilogy (Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande)
3.  HBO's Band of Brothers
4.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail
5.  Star Wars OT.

I'm going to do this without cheating, so I won't be using any trilogies, TV seasons, miniseries, or anything else that isn't one film. The first four are easy choices for me.

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Serenity
3. Gladiator
4. Black Hawk Down
5. LOTR Return of the King

The first four were easy choices for me. ESB is the best movie of all time and I love Serenity. I've seen Gladiator and Black Hawk Down probably close to 20 times each and I never get sick of them. The fifth choice was a little more difficult for me to make. I couldn't decide if I'd like a comedy type movie to break up the action theme I had going. Ultimately though I settled on ROTK, I watchit enough without getting sick of it. While stuck on an island it would be nice to have fantasy/escapist type movies, which four of the five are to get me off the island, at least mentally, for a few hours at a time.

Ok if I don't Cheat....Ryan made me feel guilty...

1. Tombstone
2. She wore a Yellow Ribbon
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. MP and the Holy Grail
5. Star Wars (or "A New Hope" to all you folks who saw on video or the DVD the first time)

But if these are DVD's does this mean we can also have the option of watching with foreign languages and Closed Captions?  I'd like to learn Spanish, French or any other languages that are available on various DVD's...not sure I would get fluent, but I could get some conversational phrases out of it.

1. Jedi - This was the first flick I ever saw in theatres and it holds a special place in my heart
2. Casino - I lived in Vegas from 84-01 and this show brought a lot of gangster stuff I never saw..Good stuff!
3. The 5th Element - I'm borrowing here but I love this movie everytime I see it and I can't get enough for some reason
4. LOTR Extended Cut Trilogy - I have them all but haven't watched them in there extended goodness
5. (The) Crow - This movie meant a lot to me while growing up as a teen

I'll hold this as a distant 6th:

6. Hellraiser (1-4) Pinhead is my alltime fav horror character and the cenobites are just plain wicked.
