Other Collectibles / Re: Star Wars Miniatures
« on: March 30, 2004, 03:29 AM »
I'm holding off till I see their scale in comparison to the original West End Games miniatures before I commit to picking these up.  IF they're compatible in size, I'll ponder getting them just to flush out more characters on the gaming table.

Beyond this though, the game just isn't that impressive...  Star Wars minis battles was a really great game, as is the Lord of the Rings Tabletop Miniatures Battles game out there.  This isn't shaping up to mimic that too much...  That's a shame, given what the potential was.  This game seems a fair bit more simplistic though, so perhaps a larger crowd will gather to it.

We'll see how these pan out though...  SW minis have been something sorely missing in the RPG world.

I think it's funny that a cartoon of Anakin, and a cartoon of Kenobi can have a better relationship than the actors playing Kenobi and Anakin.

Or the same could be said for Padme and Anakin, but even more strongly.  That little moment he touches his canopy and she touches the glass of her apartment as he leaves for war is actually REALLY good.  It trounces every "tender" moment he and Padme had in E2.

McGregor does a nice job with Kenobi in the films, but the guy can't carry every scene with Christansen.  It's a shame really, that their cartoon likenesses had better dialogue, better timing, and were simply more in tune with the classic trilogy.

I like the prequals too.  This is coming from someone who is excited when each of these movies comes out and leaves the theater happy every time.  Hell, I even watch E1 anytime I see it on TV.  But these cartoons I could watch religiously if they were a ful-length series and the quality didn't diminish.  They're just that great.

I'm imagining Rogue Squadron in this format set after Endor...  Like in the immediate aftermath.  I would just go nuts for a cartoon THIS good with classic trilogy characters.

True, but it's also got a duty to conform to continuity with the Star Wars films.  Now Lucas obviously doesn't mind it enough to say "hey, whatever", but to me it's got some lame qualities.

I love Durge, but like all EU I just disevow the things I don't like as simply never happening or not existing.  If it's crap, I ignore it is all.

BTW,

It seems that 21st's figure production is going to be highly scaled back, from news heard at the Toy Soldier Expo in Eastern PA.

Battle of the Bulge will see release to specialty/hobby shops, but don't look for Marines till 2005...  WTF 21st?  You're killing your own toy line again.   >:(

Maybe they bogarted the Modular Millenium Falcon that I and a couple others have tossed around Star Wars forums for years?  You'd be getting a ship darn near the same size as this plane's reported to be.  I really hope they go through with this.

This would be just so sweet...

I'll all for buying this, seriously.  I've never wanted to pick up an expensive item so badly before, short of a car.  :)

I drove with the top down Friday (was downright hot Friday) and yesterday though, yesterday was a tad nippy to be doing so.

We're dipping at least down to the 50's this week though, and maybe back into the 40's, so warm weather isn't here to stay I guess.  :(

I'm just scared on what cost could be for this...  $40-$50 for a regular plane could translate into pretty darn expensive for a B-17.

Just having that though, with a full crew, would rock.  I'd be one happy camper if it was the only large plane they ever made, though a jump plane or glider (or both) for my D-Day paratroopers would be lovely.  :)

Yeah, there's something about the toons that has a genuine charm like the classic films does.  It tells me that Lucas is more to blame for Star Wars losing a step than anything else.  I'm still not fond of two actors in particular in the prequals though, but ultimately it's Lucas who just doesn't seem to have the same "knack" he did in the classic trilogy to make a movie that had nothing "forced" on you but was fluid and worked on all levels.

The cartoons have that...  They have some terrible moments too though, where you can see the creator's imaginations getting out of hand...  The "crap" superlaser for instance...  The incessant use of lances as weapons (I don't get this personally...  Someone's watched too many camelot flicks)....  Propelling Durge to super-human (or whatever he is) feats like lifting an AT-TE with a lance and a speederbike...

To me, these are the dumber things shown, but for every dumb thing there's been 10 neat things.

I mean, I can't even wait to make a figure of that weird cat guy that hosts Dooku to watch the arena battle.  I don't know why, but I like that guy and he's as boring as anything...  It's an excuse to buy an extra Imp. Dignitary I guess, and I like cat people.

Anyway, on the Durge thing with the lance...  I know some people actually dug that, and I'm not saying Durge isn't even cooler than I'd anticipated, but it's still crap because (and this is very nerdy of me, I know):

a) there's no way in hell a single guy could lift the AT-TE...  We're just pushing Durge as a character too far, and making him "too strong".  Seems silly to me...

and b) His bike, and or lance would've both broke upon impact...  Maybe he's that strong, but unless his bike and lance are made of indestructable materials all of a sudden, that just doesn't jive to me.

It's like most EU though, in that it has some overly creative imaginations at work that maybe don't take into account that part of Star Wars' charm is that it "looks real", and it "feels real".  It looks like it COULD be...  Beyond the Force, there wasn't much that made you go "Wow, how'd they do that!?" when you watched those films.  It just made you think that it was your own world.

If it's my own world, then maybe Durge is that DB at the gym that I can't stand who's always powerlifting and swearing constantly while he puts up his weight, then walks around like he has a stick up his butt all day showing off.  Maybe that guy can pick up an Abrahams tank while riding his Harley?  :)

Nah...  Durge just shouldn't be able to do that stuff.  Cheapens his character.

He's still cool though, and translated into the 2nd greatest (maybe even greatest) Star Wars action figure of all time.

I've not bothered with a full custom, but I did take them apart out of curiosity.

Also, I think i'm the first person on Earth to realize Antilles DOES have waist articulation, contrary to everyone else.  It's just very strangely done so it sort of locks in place, but it is there.

I'd heard all over that he didn't till I was looking at him closely one day and noticed a definite seam there.  TIE Pilot has one too, but I can't get my only one to move at the waist so I'm gonna wait till I have one to boil/pop for fodder before I figure out what's doing on him.

I personally don't find Antilles or Dodonna particularly "great" custom fodder in the arms (either one), so I'll maybe eventually tweak them to have a more versatile arm set on both characters.  Hasbro's F'd up arm articulation makes some of these figures only good in two poses, and that flat out SUCKS.

Jedi Luke was slightly more useful as his arms weren't so sharply bent, but Dodonna and Antilles (And the TIE Pilot's right arm) are all very useless beyond one, or possibly two poses.  Disappointing in my book considering a single ball/socket elbow would give full range of motion to the arm and be better hidden ultimately since it sinks into the socket and shows no gap like the cut joints do.

I can see the argument for aesthetics (if the company were aiming for things like McFarlane's company), but when the BETTER joint also looks better to the less versatile one, then I just don't see why Hasbro goes with the craptacular "posed" joint.

More articulation on paper doesn't always = great figure I guess is the moral I've learned with some of the latest figs.

Antilles is neat, and far superior to lots of other Saga figs though, that's for sure.  I'm just getting disappointed in the way Hasbro's doing things.  These figures don't even need super articulation to be great, just a little better use of the ball/socket joint at shoulders, elbows, and knees.  Then things would really be going better.

BIG news...  Literally.

Talk of "Big Birds" coming out is swirling, and an image of a B-17 (Yes, I'm not giving you **** here, I said a B-17) have surfaced...

Will they make the famed "Flying Fortress" of World War II?  Possibly the most recognizeable plane of the war, which would sport a 5 FEET + wide wingspan?

OOOOoooo baby.  I don't have much room but you bet your sweet ass I'd own one of these, come hell or high water!

Not sure they're actually gonna make these or not...  There's a lotta "talk" swirling about what 21st is GOING to do this year and into the next couple years, but what they WILL do is something else.

If I can last these dormant days though, you guys can too.  Don't give up all hope and let us just wish for these things.

I say though, if 21st DOES make a 1:18 B-17 then Hasbro better get their **** together and start making scale vehicles.  Their stuff isn't even NEAR the level of detail, quality, or complexity of 21st so they can really at least improve their LITTLE vehicles like the AT-ST, Y-Wing, B-Wing, and TIE FIghter...  Good God there H, get with the times...  Especially if vehicles are just aimed at collectors like you always tend to claim.

I noticed something on the swap of parts, and not to be a downer on it, but there's a color difference between the arms and the coats when you swap them.  :(  It's not HUGE, but it's noticeable.  I thought maybe anyone curious would want to know though...

Also, a skintone difference between the heads and hands of the figures...  Dodonna's definitely tanner than Antilles, and their hands don't mix with the heads then without a little oddity.

I don't think Hasbro intended this idea, I think it's coincidental at this point...  The color variances just don't match up.  Then again, they claim they intended the KB TIE's cockpit was intentionally made to work with the TIE Int's from TRU, and the color of both didn't match at all (despite what Hasbro said).

Maybe they (Hasbro) just suck?  Nah...  Not possible.   :P

#11 was indeed a good episode...

Lots of dogfighting between Assajj and Ani, as mentioned, and it was pretty intense seeing them fly through the cityscape on the Banking Clan's planet.

BTW, the Bankers have a nice rock to rest on...  It's a pretty peaceful looking place.

Anakin was indeed particularly doofy tonight so that was cool.  Lots of snotty stuff that you'd love to smack the crap out of him for.

The Clones constant "Yes sir", "No Sir" answers are funny...  I like that they are not the best conversationalists, but Obi-Wan still treats them like they're normal people.

Assajj's ship is officially on my "To-Do" list for customizing.  I REALLY want a scale one that opens up and everything.  It's not too big, and I already have a million ideas floating in my mind on how to do the "fan" part too.  Good stuff...  And ya know Hasbro wn't get off their ass on a Season 2 Clone Wars line, so I'm left to do it myself...  And likely do it better anyway.

Her ship's one of the neatest designs...  And it even keeps to the Geonosian Solar Sailer look too.  Love that stuff.

I loved tonight's episode...

Watching 1-10 though reminded me of some of the STUPID moments from those though.  Durge destroying an AT-TE with a lance, the Mon Calamari episode, Durge wreaking havoc with his lance otherwise, etc...  These toons aren't without some pretty "Stupid" seeming flaws.  Kind of like the prequals but to a lesser extent.
