Vintage Kenner / Re: Latest vintage acquisition

Snagged the POTF Stormie Luke and R2-D2 collectable coins last night. I just missed on the Luke "No Eyes" variant, but was able to win the regular version as a consolation prize. The R2 coin was a measly $4, which amazes me because the actual figure (w/Pop-Up lightsaber) is so damn expensive. It's the exact opposite of the Anakin situation - cheap figure, very expensive coin. That I get, because of the limited carded quantities that actually included the coin, as opposed to the mail-away figures in circulation. But it seems like the R2 coin would be as elusive as the actual figure, and thus command a relatively comparable premium price. (It was definitely the Category 1 version - I know there are multiple versions out there)

I'm not complaining by any stretch, just seems kinda odd.

I got my Stormie Luke in the mail yesterday, and he looks even better than I had hoped. :) Now that I have the coin on the way I can scratch him off my list entirely. Glad to have the R2 coin too, because I rarely see auctions for that figure with the coin included. He is next up on my figure list, followed by Blue Snags and Yak Face and then I am done with figures - yay!

That Yak Face POTF coin is going to be a real bear...

Jedi News UK has info up on their front page about the new TCW Mail Away figure for Fall 2010, none other than the estimable Sergeant Bric.

Can't go wrong with more clones, I guess.

Is the Black Hole/Stormtrooper really based on a comic though? This sounds like something from the super-old comic strip which ran in newspapers.

I loved that strip, but I can't stomach the Dark Horse shiite. Did they just recycle the stuff that ran in papers years back? Or was it more of a "re-imagining"?

Great pics, Darby...I totally remember having that thing. I may need to pick this up for pure nostalgia.

I kept my run going this weekend too by picking up what appears to be a pretty decent Star Destroyer playset. Description and pics were a bit vague but for $20 shipping included I can't really complain.

Down to about 13 items left on the list plus some miscellaneous swag now...can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyone spot these at a Walmart yet?

Not a single one has shown up locally at TRU or Target, starting to get concerned...

I've seen a bunch between three TRUs. If you need, I could pick up for you.

Thanks, I may take you up on that if I go another couple of days without finding these. Appreciate the offer!

I really loved the Brown Snake Yoda variant because the cane and facial coloring were noticeably distinct as well. This is one of my favorites!

I still haven't decided if the "green snake" version is really a true variant or not.  :-\

Oh, I'll watch it, believe me, I just shudder at the thought of some bitter little kid making the Jedi look like a bunch of stooges. It's bad enough they keep getting punked by Cad Bane. TCW has really done a lot to chip away at their mystique of awesomeness, it seems to me.

I guess it's not any more implausible than baby Anakin blowing up the Trade Federation ship, but I can't help but long for the days when the SW heroes could actually shave and converse like adults. (Cranky old man rant over)

Wasn't planning on making any more additions to the vintage collection this week, but $50 for StormTrooper Luke was too good to pass up. I bid early and figured I would get boatraced by other bidders at the last minute, but no other bids even came in...weird.

He's not pristine, but 100% complete with original helmet and blaster. Looks pretty good to me, aside from some faint discoloration on the shoulder (apparently from the cardback).

I can only speculate that the seller's omission of the word "vintage" from the auction listing reduced visibility. He did have "POTF" in there, but not everyone focuses on that when searching eBay.

Ugh...spare me. The coolest thing about that character is the mystery. Once you start pulling back the veil, that quality is forever lost.

I don't see how that would make for an even remotely exciting figure either. There is NO WAY that iconic armor is going to fit that little tween punk at his age, so he can't possibly wear it on the show. And what's exciting about a figure of a young human boy?  ::)

What kind of self respecting bounty hunter would take orders from a little kid anyway?

Nope, not on board with this idea...I get it's a shrewd marketing ploy, but it just seems like a cheap, easy grab for some pub at the expense of the original canon.

If they want to flesh out a character with a good backstory, please have a go at Aurra Sing instead.

I saw these at Target last night while searching for the new battlepacks (unsuccessfully). Very underwhelming.

I haven't been following this conversation all that much - but are you saying that the realistic Clone Wars figures bombed?  I seem to recall most of them doing pretty good, but the animated ones having more problems.  A lot of those hit clearance in quantity.

Just my impression really, not based on any hard data. I've looked through those 2003 offerings though and they are pretty limited, IE: not a huge # of figures, vehicles, etc. I assume if they had strong sales Hasbro would have had a more robust assortment of swag.

By contrast, I could never find the first incarnation of animated figures at retail, although admittedly I was pretty clueless about tracking stuff down back then. I had to get nearly all of them on eBay.

Really I was just sort of making the point that it seemed like they tried going down the realistic/animated route before, and for whatever reason decided to go in a different direction. (Thankfully, IMHO)

Thanks guys, I am working on cataloguing my vintage stuff now and clean-up and pics are next on the agenda. (Then finding a suitable long term storage option - no room to display, unfortunately)

I kinda dig the bargain's a bit tedious, but there are some good scores to be had out there if you know how to look.

BTW, I got my B-Wing in the mail Friday and this thing blew me away. Never had it as a kid, but the design is marvelous, and it has some serious heft. One of my favorite pieces so far, for sure. Also convinces me more than ever that the Twilight could be rendered just as awesomely if Hasbro would give it a shot.

My original goal for completing my vintage collection was August-September, now I'm thinking June/July, if all goes well. Some of the remaining items are pretty hard to come by, not to mention pricey as hell. Imperial Sniper will be a tough get, methinks.

Didn't Hasbro sort of attempt that back in 2003 with the Clone Wars line? The ships were cool but I thought the character renditions were horrible. Durge in particular was a trainwreck compared to the Tartakovsky inspired version. I don't think they sold all that well either as my recollection is that this line was pretty short-lived.

It's a novel concept, but also my worst nightmare, frankly. I would definitely lose all interest in the TCW offerings if they went "realistic". I just don't think you can render animated characters well in a realistic style. It's true kids might buy them no matter what, but I think the animated style is sort of unique and holds its own offbeat appeal.

I do think you'll see the positive impact you are looking for when the live action show arrives. Those will likely inspire a whole new line in the realistic style, and likely help boost the associated realistic lines as well.
