The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Recent Clone Wars Finds/Purchases
« on: April 2, 2010, 11:51 AM »
File this one under a "Lousy Find"....

I went to a nearby WalMart tonight and they were stocking the shelves.

There were about seven toy pallets being worked and three of them heavily contained Hasbro action figure cases.

There was a healthy amount of Iron Man 2, Marvel Universe, Transformers and GI Joe. There were also twelve cases of Clone Wars figures.

Now, I've seen reports from some of you in the last few weeks of walking into a WalMart and seeing a lot of the most recent wave (Snowgear Obi-Wan, Firefighter Droid, Magnaguard, etc...) - I hoped I had stumbled upon the same thing.

Unfortunately all twelve cases were 2009 Wave 4 - which was actually the second Red/White wave of Clone Wars figures that was released back in August of 2009.

You read that right - twelve cases of the Whorm Loathsom/Soft Goods Yoda/Admiral Yularen/Commando Droid/etc... wave

Figures that to this day, you can pretty much find ANYWHERE if you look around...

I guess I won't be checking back at this WalMart anytime soon....   >:(

Dude, I am seeing the same thing here...pegs go 6 or 7 deep on Yularens, Fistos, Padmes, etc. They are never going to move these steamers, not even for $6 a pop.

What drives me crazy is the thought that somewhere out there is a whole warehouse full of Hondos, Aaylas, and the 2 successive waves that are gathering dust for no apparent reason. I guess we'll see those in a similar glut come July.  ::)

I'm fine with stores getting 12 cases of new TCW figures - just make sure they are the latest ones and they will sell. Otherwise, instant peg warmers.

Vintage Variants:

"Brown Hair" Luke

"Orange Hair" Luke

Luke w/Double Telescoping Lightsaber

I'd love an animated Bossk as well...good call.

Can we also include a blurb about any vintage variants?  ;D

Green Crossbow Chewbacca comes to mind immediately, but there is also "Green Pouch" Chewbacca and "Green Legs" Chewbacca, if you consider those true variants.

Snagged the POTF Stormie Luke and R2-D2 collectable coins last night. I just missed on the Luke "No Eyes" variant, but was able to win the regular version as a consolation prize. The R2 coin was a measly $4, which amazes me because the actual figure (w/Pop-Up lightsaber) is so damn expensive. It's the exact opposite of the Anakin situation - cheap figure, very expensive coin. That I get, because of the limited carded quantities that actually included the coin, as opposed to the mail-away figures in circulation. But it seems like the R2 coin would be as elusive as the actual figure, and thus command a relatively comparable premium price. (It was definitely the Category 1 version - I know there are multiple versions out there)

I'm not complaining by any stretch, just seems kinda odd.

I got my Stormie Luke in the mail yesterday, and he looks even better than I had hoped. :) Now that I have the coin on the way I can scratch him off my list entirely. Glad to have the R2 coin too, because I rarely see auctions for that figure with the coin included. He is next up on my figure list, followed by Blue Snags and Yak Face and then I am done with figures - yay!

That Yak Face POTF coin is going to be a real bear...

Jedi News UK has info up on their front page about the new TCW Mail Away figure for Fall 2010, none other than the estimable Sergeant Bric.

Can't go wrong with more clones, I guess.

Is the Black Hole/Stormtrooper really based on a comic though? This sounds like something from the super-old comic strip which ran in newspapers.

I loved that strip, but I can't stomach the Dark Horse shiite. Did they just recycle the stuff that ran in papers years back? Or was it more of a "re-imagining"?

Great pics, Darby...I totally remember having that thing. I may need to pick this up for pure nostalgia.

I kept my run going this weekend too by picking up what appears to be a pretty decent Star Destroyer playset. Description and pics were a bit vague but for $20 shipping included I can't really complain.

Down to about 13 items left on the list plus some miscellaneous swag now...can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyone spot these at a Walmart yet?

Not a single one has shown up locally at TRU or Target, starting to get concerned...

I've seen a bunch between three TRUs. If you need, I could pick up for you.

Thanks, I may take you up on that if I go another couple of days without finding these. Appreciate the offer!

I really loved the Brown Snake Yoda variant because the cane and facial coloring were noticeably distinct as well. This is one of my favorites!

I still haven't decided if the "green snake" version is really a true variant or not.  :-\

Oh, I'll watch it, believe me, I just shudder at the thought of some bitter little kid making the Jedi look like a bunch of stooges. It's bad enough they keep getting punked by Cad Bane. TCW has really done a lot to chip away at their mystique of awesomeness, it seems to me.

I guess it's not any more implausible than baby Anakin blowing up the Trade Federation ship, but I can't help but long for the days when the SW heroes could actually shave and converse like adults. (Cranky old man rant over)

Wasn't planning on making any more additions to the vintage collection this week, but $50 for StormTrooper Luke was too good to pass up. I bid early and figured I would get boatraced by other bidders at the last minute, but no other bids even came in...weird.

He's not pristine, but 100% complete with original helmet and blaster. Looks pretty good to me, aside from some faint discoloration on the shoulder (apparently from the cardback).

I can only speculate that the seller's omission of the word "vintage" from the auction listing reduced visibility. He did have "POTF" in there, but not everyone focuses on that when searching eBay.

Ugh...spare me. The coolest thing about that character is the mystery. Once you start pulling back the veil, that quality is forever lost.

I don't see how that would make for an even remotely exciting figure either. There is NO WAY that iconic armor is going to fit that little tween punk at his age, so he can't possibly wear it on the show. And what's exciting about a figure of a young human boy?  ::)

What kind of self respecting bounty hunter would take orders from a little kid anyway?

Nope, not on board with this idea...I get it's a shrewd marketing ploy, but it just seems like a cheap, easy grab for some pub at the expense of the original canon.

If they want to flesh out a character with a good backstory, please have a go at Aurra Sing instead.
