The Original Trilogy / Luke's Jedi Trials
« on: March 31, 2006, 06:31 PM »
I was watching "Clone Wars" Volume 2 this weekend and during the council's discussion about Anakin being promoted to Jedi there is an interesting talk about the Jedi Trials that were referenced in Ep I. The trials they mention are: The trial of the flesh, the trial of skill, and the mirror. Now alot of people look at Luke's training as being incomplete but he actually went through all of the Jedi Trials in Empire and Jedi;
Trial of Flesh- Loss of his hand on Bespin

Trial of Skill- The Battle with Vader on Bespin, Defeat of Vader on the 2nd Death Star

The Mirror- The cave on Dagobah

This also puts a totally different spin on why Yoda stated that Luke had to face Vader to complete his training. he wasn't being sent to kill him necessarily but to face his last test of skill. (obviosly Vader and Palpatine needed to be defeated but this was not the sole reason that Luke was sent to face them) What do you guys think?

Thanks for the comments guys! Darth Nihilus is a ROTS Emperor with a sculpted mask with forearms from an evolutions Palpatine (which were added after the original pics were taken). His cloak is part the POTJ Jedi Luke Cloak and part the evolutions Palpatine cloak. I did half plastic and half softgoods because I liked the billowy nature of the softgoods but wanted to keep the sculpted and tame quality of the plastic. Here are a couple more pics

See page one for the final version of Luke!

<Edit: See below for Darth Nihilus pics>

SA Luke Skywalker Jedi Master

He's a combo of the obi wan #55 cloak, evolutions anakin body, and the VOTC Luke head

here he is with the wife who's also been modified slightly to look more like the upcoming bust of her. Got rid of the all white Bugs bunny gloves which I always thought were weird..

Oh and someone should change the title to this thread so the casual browsers know what they're missing! :)

Star Wars Universe / Re: Clone Wars = Canon or EU?
« on: March 29, 2006, 09:10 AM »
The Clone Wars TV Series, at least to me, is as EU as Dark Empire, Republic, KOTOR, Crimson Empire, Ewok TV Movies, etc. I also consider all EU canon (although not as canon as the movies), except for Infinities.

Y'know I know that most fans don't agree with that position but I feel the exact same way. Unless something is DIRECTLY contradicted by a movie I see no reason to treat it as borderline fan fiction. But I'm pretty sure that we are in the minority on this issue.

Does anyone have a Saga 2006 Carbonite Han Solo to spare? I don't need the carbonite block, just the figure. Thanks!

Star Wars Universe / Clone Wars = Canon or EU?
« on: March 27, 2006, 09:23 AM »
So here's a question; Do you guys consider the Clone Wars cartoons canon or EU? The stock answer is "it's not in the movies so it's not Canon". But the opening crawl of ROTS basically details what happened in Clone Wars Volume 2 (minus the mutant smurfs). So does that mean CW is canon insofar as it is included in the opening crawl?  Is it all, some, or none?

I guess this question also goes to film references to EU like Obi Wan's statement re: Master Vos and that "business on Cato Neimodia". The common theme with all of these EU references is that the EU character/novel/cartoon came out before it's mention in the Canon (unlike Solo's reference to Ord MAntell) so it seems like an active effort on Lucas' part to incorporate ideas from the EU. Is being mentioned in a movie enough to make a character canon? I know there's is probably no definitive answer but I was wondering what you guys thought.

Who's torso is in the last body pictured with the brown Tunic and black arms? The torso looks thin enough to use for a Jedi female. Maybe Jocasta Nu?

I didn't mean bent over backward in the sense of making up a back story for him, it was more me just taking what was an admittedly cheap shot at the whole fan's choice disscussion/argument that's been going on. And I agree that the whole "Taun Taun" bar is an example of bad EU but it's consistent with Obi- wan making comments like being sent on a "wild Bantha chase" in ROTS. I agree that the concept of the "taun taun bar" or Obi wan using a term from a planet we've only known him to have gone to once is lame but it certainly isn't exclusive to the EU.

I agree that alot of the really good EU characters have not been used to their fullest potential. Your example with Katarn and also I think that Mara Jade's character hasn't been very well developed. I don't know if I missed it, but I don't think that there has been a book that actually goes into her and Luke getting together. It felt like they were friends and then all of a sudden they were married.

All in all I feel that there is bad EU and bad Canon (I hate sand it gets every where...but not like you...Ew.) But to act like it all sucks just because some of it does just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Obviously because there are so many different artists involved with the EU , no one project is going to appeal to everyone (I find Zahn's stuff pretty boring <even though I really like Mara Jade and Thrawn as characters> but most people love him). But, in a way, that's kind of the cool thing about it because when you find a book that appeals to your particular perspective it's a really fun read.

Wow that is so weird. I was going to do that same character with the exact same recipe. At least now I know what he looks like done right! Very very cool custom.

Ok a few things:
- Luke marrying Mara- This is not a relationship that happened as soon as she was introduced, they new each other for years before there was even a spark of interest.  The fact that people think Luke wouldn't marry a former darkside user or that it's "out of character" doesn't make sense. Based on luke's journey from ANH to ROTJ it is intrinsic to his character that he believe that people can change no matter how "evil". If not for this belief then Vader would never have been redeemed and the whole purpose of the "Canon" (the tale of Vader's rise, fall , and redemption) wouldn't make any sense. Further, Mara was manipulated by the emperor. She had very limited darkside powers so that Palpatine could influence her. Obviously she wasn't completely under his control but it's not like Luke married a Dark lord of the sith. Yes, Mara was an assasin for the Empire but calling her a mass murderer on par with Vader is completely unfair and inaccurate. And my last point about Luke and Mara is that Luke isn't whipped, he's just married ;)

The thing that absolutely KILLS me about EU haters is that they will dog out really great characters like Quinlan Vos, Mara Jade, and Kyle Katarn but will bend over backward for dumb sh** like Icecream maker guy. ::)
