The Legacy Collection / Legacy Collection Comic Packs
« on: July 3, 2008, 12:50 AM »
We've got a couple new looks at 2 of the new comic packs slated for the Legacy Collection in 2008.

Clicky to check out Durge & Anakin Skywalker

Clicky to check out Tol Skorr & Assajj Ventriss

Now, personally, I don't think the Clone Wars Durge (realistic style) can be topped short of a new paintjob and maybe a cool new accessory.  I made him his own functional "bola" weapon and it looks smashing (no pun...  well, perhaps a little one).  Anakin...  Eh, I'll take it.  He looks beat up.

Assajj may well be one of the greater figures.  I'm hoping for some improved articulation there.  Skorr, I have no clue who he is as that's a story arc I've not gotten to at all, but he appeared to be a separatist leader of some sort and I dig that.  I'm much more interested in this set then.

Check 'em out...

Star Wars Ships and Vehicles / Build A Better Vulture Droid...
« on: June 17, 2008, 04:07 AM »
This is a little tip, little-known among the collecting world it seems because I sure don't see these often...

Anyway, Hasbro's Vulture Droids are 100% clearly underscaled machines.  They're alright if scale isn't important to you, and readily available cheap, but there's better out there...

Estes Model Rockets made a number of rocket kits for Star Wars over the years, and one just happened to be a Vulture Class Droid Starfighter.  Actually two are...  One is in a blister-type hanging package, and it's dinky, so avoid it.

The other, however, is boxed, and cost about $25 originally at Wal-Mart or hobby stores...  And it's just about damn near 100% to-scale.  A hair over, actually (1:16), but really the fudge room there is minimal...  Another half inch the other way and it's almost exactly 1:18 rounded up...  So what's this mean?

Well, it means you do have better Vulture Droid options out there...  A droid that makes an appearance in at least two of the prequal films, and possibly AOTC as well.  I forget if it was in there or not, but if it isn't it will still be a big player in Clone Wars coming up.  That's a given...

The problem; they don't seem too common.  :-\

Here's the droid...

I've known about the size/droid possibilities for a while, better than 2 years I think, actually.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to find one to verify it compared to figures, until recently.  Like I said, they don't seem to come around on Ebay often...  I got one the other day for a fair price though.  It's a sharp piece too, very detailed actually, and so it'll look good with the figures.

Anyway...  Tired of your Droid Fighters being inky dinky and weak?  Hell yeah you are...  Go out and improve your Droid army's scale.  The tinnies will thank you for it.

The Legacy Collection / SA Imperial Officer, 2009... Finally?
« on: May 13, 2008, 11:24 PM »
Are there any plans to retool the Imperial Officer, Death Star Trooper, or AT-AT Driver? so they do not have those awkward looking swivel elbows? Or are these figures on a long term list to get the whole "SA treatment" sometime in the near future? (MD, 05/09/08)

Yes, we do have plans to update these guys within the to SA versions at some point. Imperial Officer would be first, in 2009. The AT-AT driver would come later and might be 2010. Death Star Trooper, though, is someone we might save for a Vintage line and probably wouldn't be in the mainline per se.

The Death Star Trooper answer is interesting...  I don't personally think anyone cared for an AT-AT Driver so I found that request odd, but on the Imperial Officer?

About friggin' time...  I'm hoping for black and grey variants though, and if they're really nice an olive variant would also be greatly appreciated.  Come on Hasbro you know you want to milk the **** out of this mold when it's released, and we'll gladly pay for it. ;)

I'm also hoping for some funky 70's sideburn headsculpts here, and/or Jeremy Bulloch as Imperial coward in ESB.  I'm giddy to know this figure is finally coming out though, and I plan to buy these till the cows come home.

Clone Wars Ultimate Battlepack: 087-06-2070 $59.99

As per the front page story, a new Ultimate Battlepack, but for Clone Wars...  I'm wondering if this'll be animated stuff or what?  Probably I suppose, but still it seems like it's possibly cool news.  :)  Maybe it'll be worth buying the set for the accessories and selling off the figures if they're animated?

Any speculation on this one?

Watto's Junk Yard / Cool History Channel Stuff
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:00 AM »
I'm a big fan of watching History Channel and other related TV channels (military channel, etc.), and figure there's bound to be a lot of other guys watching it...

Something that prompted me to fire this thread up is a new show they're running called "Battle 360", which takes a historical battle (so far only World War 2 that I've seen), and it's really fantastic.  It animates battles gives you a full view of how the battle would've played out...  It tends to focus on specific moments and actions in the overall battle too, pointing out unorthidox techniques of commanders and indivudals during the battle.

Anyway, tonight was the battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in the Pacific theater, a naval conflict between the U.S. and Japanese.

I won't get into the episode too much if people want to watch it for themselves (I'm sure it'll be repeated like everything else on the channel about 3000 times this weekend).  What I found fascinating, and what interests me the most in the show I guess, is one specific moment actually that the show made sure to point out...  It's kind of the reason I wanted to start the thread.  I'm very into history and military history in particular, so this just was really "neat" to me and I thought it was worth mentioning.

The USS Smith was acting as a screen to the USS Enterprise during the battle while Enterprise was getting pounded by Japanese Dive Bombers and Torpedo Bombers...  A US pilot shot and damaged a Japanese plane, which rolled into a dive at the Smith which was nearby the Enterprise, and he Kamikazied the Smith in the bow.

His Torpedo also was still "live" and went off a short time later...  The forward hull was engulfed in flames on the Smith, and the crew was having difficulty getting the flames under control and it was threatening to detonate the ship's own ammunition stores...

The Smith's Captain, amidst all this chaos, smoke, fire, and really unbelievable carnage, turned the vessel into the wake of another escorting ship, which was kicking up a lot of spray...  To get control of the forward fire on the ship, he actually pulled in behind another and the spray put the flames down...  The ship returned then to putting flak in the air and defending the USS Enterprise.

I've never read this story, never heard about this action that saved a ship really and put it back to its job immediately, despite a blow that for all intents and purposes should've crippled, if not sunk the Smith.  That's just simply incredible stuff...  It's the kind of small action that usually gets glossed over in the hsitory books due to the larger battle it all took place in.  But it's the kind of thing that I'm loving about this new Battle 360 show, as it really puts you in a place where you can see how the battle played out, and why things turned out as they did, and the actions that made the day a success (or failure) for either side.

I highly recommend this one...  History Channel shows tend to come and go quickly, but this one I'm really hoping sticks around and covers more than just naval engagements.

Weird thread perhaps, I just was really enjoying the program and thought I'd share.  Plus it really introduces some heroes to you too.  Well worth watching for a wide variety fo reasons I think.

The Legacy Collection / More Ultimate Battlepacks
« on: March 15, 2008, 05:17 PM »
According to Curto, there's more UBP's on tap...

Endor Celebration:
Darth Vader (Funeral Pyre)
Luke Skywalker
Han Solo
Chewbacca
Red Sullustian Pilot
Obi-Wan Spirit
Yoda Spirit
Anakin Spirit (Sebastian Shaw Head)

And a Death Star Escape...

Let the speculation begin.  That Pyre Vader would probably be a hefty "accessory".  Lot of figures in that set too.  Might be interesting.

The Legacy Collection / Legacy Wave 3 - Repaints/Repacks
« on: March 13, 2008, 03:47 AM »
According to one of SSG's questions this week, a repaint wave is upon us again this year, and again due to some production issue/delay that's pushed a decent wave of figures out for a wave of figures we probably didn't want or need...

So, with that in mind...  What do you want?  What could Hasbro possibly redeco that we'd care about?

Me, I don't have a clue at the moment...  Repaints aren't necessarilly all bad, but if you're like me, a lot of them aren't real high on the list of wants...  Some maybe, like the Hawkbat Batallion Clone was really cool and desired (to me at least), but R2-B1, Red Naboo Dude, Pax Bonkik and stuff just seemed meh...  Some ones I could stand though?

-Imperial Techie...  A kitbash of the "Imperial Officer" from the waist up, with the bendable knee legs of the POTJ/etc. TIE Pilot pack-in figure.  The legs fit PERFECTLY and are the correct sculpt even for the jumpsuit!  How can you go wrong here?  Sure it's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than a non-poseable leg version. :)  Give him a light grey deco with the silver/black Impy Logo patches on his shoulders, and you have a pretty rockin' figure for your Destroyer bridge, or just hanging around in your Imperial hangar you don't have.  Include the scanner box as an accessory, as it is a cool box, and a gun, and you're set.

-E or U-3PO...  Would it be so wrong to get Endor C-3PO in simple silver chrome?  Include some kind of junk accessory, and that'd be neat I think.  A Bespin Sculpture would be equally cool for whichever one of those two was on Bespin.  All I know is, silver protocol droids are cool, and cooler when they dont' have the TC-14 sculpt disadvatnages.

-Ewok 2-pack...  Simple logic would tell you to put the Romba/Graak pack out with radically different decorations.  Instant new Ewok figures.  Hasbro is dumb not to do this, I have deemed it so.

-Wookiee Warrior...  I may be in the minority, but I love the Preview Wookiee and I'd take a new one.  If they could slip the new battlepack belt/gear on him and maybe whip up a new gun (headsculpt?), that'd be simply outstanding.  Not likely, but outstanding.

-Orange R5 Droid...  The ANH Mos Eisley R5 that rolls by during the Sandtrooper questioning.  I love that push pop colored R5, as it's so 70's Retro.

-Light Blue Power Droid...  Make it a 2-pack Hasbro!  Pack the light blue Power Droid from Mos Eisley in with the R5.  Instant awesomeness.  Or, tickle the balls of vintage fans by making a dark blue "vintage" repaint of the gonk droid...  That would make people cry with joy.

-White IG Droid...  Another Bespin lame-o, take the vintage IG-88 and give him the worn white deco of the junk IG droid on Bespin whose name currently escapes me.  I'd dig that, and so would Jesus.

Now, things NOT to do...

-Stormtrooper, Scout, or Snowtrooper repaints...  Don't do it, please.

-No Clone repaint you made up Hasbro, please...  Stop ruining Clone fun for us all.

-No Vader's...  Enough with Vader already.  It's offensive at this point.

I'm pretty open to most anything else, but the above would just make me groan I think.  As it is, a repaint wave bumping something possibly OT-oriented, is annoying.  It's already a fairly OT-dry year, or at least feels that way, so the thought of a repaint wave is just a little bit of a bummer.  Repaints at $8 are even bigger bummers too.

Watto's Junk Yard / Last Living U.S. "Great War" Vet Honored
« on: March 6, 2008, 10:24 PM »
On Yahoo there's a video of the last living U.S. World War 1 Veteran (Frank Buckles) being honored by the President at the White House.  I was thinking about this actually and how sad it is that really the veterans of World War 1 went largely forgotten by the public.  World War 2 generally gets more "press", possibly because Hollywood latches onto that war more...  World War 1 is also largely overlooked in U.S. history courses it seems, and is largely viewed as a European conflict (couldn't be more wrong on that of course).

I just find it impressive how many people have survived from that era, well into the 1990's, but sad at how few are left from an era that really hasn't had the same ammount of focus in the U.S. as other times seem to get.  It's a missed opportunity I fear since so many are not around now to tell of their experiences.

The little video on Yahoo ended with a story that was kind of funny...  The gentleman was asked what's different now to him from then when he was young, and he said transportation...  Everyone has a car now.  :)

As if his life wasn't long and interesting enough, he was stationed in the Phillipines at the onset of World War 2, and spent 3 years in a Japanese prison camp.  To survive one horrific war, only to go into one of the worst situations of another, and still survive.  That's impressive.

Does anyone happen to have Grievous' Starfighter, and could they give me a measurement on the ship's length if possible?  I'd appreciate it a lot.

Other Toy Lines / Anyone Heard of Majo-Kit (Majorette)?
« on: March 4, 2008, 03:49 AM »
I'm curious about anyone who maybe knows of any site(s) into this.  I can't seem to find much in searches.

Majorette make die-cast cars like Hot Wheels and things, some larger scales too, but in the 80's/90's they also made a toy line called Majo-Kit that was basically a LEGO competition thing...  You built city's with it, and it was a modular set-up, not as versatile as LEGO, but similar in style...  You got building walls you put together, floors/roofs, sidewalks the buildings fit into, etc., etc.

I'm curious if people have heard of these, if people (other than me) had these, and if there's any kind of collecting site associated with them...  Considering possibly selling mine actually if I an find them and complete the sets as much as possible.  I had a sickening number of these I got at Children's Palace and Family Toy WhoreWarehouse and stuff.  They were pretty neat...  I'll be damned if I can find them on Ebay or anything.  Found a trade catalogue and that was it...  Sad.

They were really rather neat though and really challenged the mind as far as laying out a "city" in some logical way (or illogical if you were in the mood to really make a screwed up looking town).

Thanks if anyone knows something here.  Cars and associated toys aren't my gig.

30th Anniversary Collection / Hermi Odle... Sort of Uncommon?
« on: February 25, 2008, 03:06 AM »
I was thinking tonight about all the 2007 figures that I saw in limited numbers, only once, or not at all...

Ultimately, I can't think of anything now that I didn't see at least once, but there was some that I didn't see very many of.  McQuarrie Starkiller and McQuarrie Han Solo both come to mind as figures I saw once maybe twice, and then nothing...  Ironically I've wound up seeing more Wave 7.5 and 8 than those two figures, and I really thought those last couple waves from 2007 would be a bear to find.

One that came to mind though was Hermi Odle...  I think I saw old Apple Eater twice total.  Did his size limit his production?  Or was his wave just less common?  In my area, I can't say that his wave was really abundant, and the Luke figure wasn't around a lot either because of that, though one would linger here and there it seemed...

Anyone else find that Hermi may be one of those figures you're glad you didn't pass on when you saw him?  He's up there with my tops of 2007 for sure, and he was my most wanted Jabba's Alien, so I was happy to buy the second I saw him, but looking back I'm glad I saw him at all.   :-\

I cannot stop laughing at this.  I was shocked it was on Youtube to share really, but that's what makes the internet great.  If you're not into Hockey you won't know anyone in the commercial.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / CW "Speeder Bike Recon" Battle Pack
« on: February 16, 2008, 02:45 PM »
In a small photo someone posted elsewhere, there appears to be maybe another Clone bikerscout 2-pack type set...

BARC Speeder front is barely noticeable, 2 AOTC Clones seem to be the figures with some odd striping I can't quite make out in the picture...  Has the Treachery on Salecumi pack's popularity spawned a whole series of Speederbike sets from film and EU?   ???

Watto's Junk Yard / Angry People on TV Are Funny.
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:53 PM »
There's something about watching people get pissed off that I take sick pleasure in, and I've found a new way to get my jollies with this...  Watching TV tonight, A&E had some new show on (at least one I hadn't seen before) called Parking Wars...  If you haven't watched this before, I highly suggest you give it a whirl...

Basically, they follow around (like the show "cops") Parking Authority workers in Philadelphia...  It's great.  I thought the repo shows were funny, and they are in a way (and sort of action-ish, like cops is), however the Parking Wars show is much more light-hearted and just filled with people who freak out over parking tickets...  It's great!

It's extra funny too because getting parking tickets is usually something very avoidable, just that people don't give a **** at the time, so it comes back to bite them in the ass on this program and YOU get to be there!

Maybe I'm sick, or easily entertained, or both, but I could watch this all day...  People threaten the meter people, people threaten the impound truck, people freak out at the impound office...  It's simply a fun time.

Two thumbs up, all the way.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate it man!
