Toy Reviews / Re: New JD Review: Ki-Adi Mundi (Jedi Master)
« on: August 11, 2005, 01:23 AM »
Figures I review don't really have their past version come into play on my ultimate judgment of whether I like it or not...  The only way it creeps in is when a figure I review now is just so better than a previous version that you can just basically toss that old one in the fodder bin if you wanted...  I think that's the case with Ki-Adi actually, where his past versions just don't stack up at all.

Comparing things like sculpt and whatnot are all fair comparisons though...  Articulation though?  Well, it depends.  My point of view in 1999 was that Hasbro could've done better on articulation across the board, they were just too cheap to make the toy line competitive.  Jump to 2005 and Hasbro's made a lot of efforts to make Star Wars match up to anything else in the action figure aisle...  They upped the anty.  I think they've alwyas been capable of this, they just chose not to, so to that end I believe a comparison is valid...

That said, I don't really let a past figure alter my opinion too much one way or the other.  If a figure's good then it gets positive marks from me...  If not, then I slam it.  The Wookiee Warrior's better though, arguably, than Mechanic Chewbacca...  I'd rather have Chewie Mechanic on my shelf than the Wookiee Warrior (the basic release one, not preview) which I really dislike overall.  Comparisons can be made, but I've found that I tend to look at the figure as it is alone rather than let anything else influence me.

The articulation on Ki-Adi's what I like though, and it just happens that it makes me look at those past Ki-Adi's and laugh a bit.

The Wookiee Arcade / Re: ICONS: Star Wars Games
« on: August 11, 2005, 01:12 AM »
I've watched that episode before...  It was a little unfair at times, I thought, and a little vague too.  They skipped entire games that were actually "high points", like if I recall the X-Wing: Alliance game was completely skipped yet it's overall a vastly superior game over XvT in every way plus it was generally more popular and still has a supported online community to this day (amazingly).

Force Commander love is something I've just come to not expect.  The rags tore it up because it didn't appeal to mainstream gamers enough because they couldn't play it...  It's by far and away not Lucasarts' best foot forward as I think Dark Forces/Jedi Knight were that, with XW, TIE, and XW:A being VERY close 2nds, and Rogue Squadron a nicely situated 3rd.  Those games are all unequaled to this day as far as what they did for Star Wars gaming, and in gaming in general they were HUGE strides for any company.  I mean, Dark Forces was THE game that made 3rd person shooting more than the Doom experience.

I'd have put XvT as a low point.  The engine for that game was so wonky but people had such a boner to play online X-Wing/TIE Fighter gaming that it got good marks.  X-Wing: Alliance (oh the tragedy it is, falling prey to E1 gaming schedules pushes  ::) ) was so vastly superior and such a blatant replacement to XvT, that I think it's a game that never gets the props it deserves.

Then again Lucasarts totally ignoring the flight sims since Alliance is a bit of a boner on their part all together.

To me, the low points are MoTK, Battlegrounds (game mods are best left for downloading online, not buying at the store), Rebellion (it's just never been one I liked), Racer's Revenge, among some others.

Lucasarts is one of my fav companies, I just wish they'd pick it up a notch with FPS gaming and Flight Sims (and in general, PC gaming).  Go back to what you perfected at one point, and re-claim that throne, ya know?  Put out that Star Wars "Saga" Flight Simulator...  Add to the Katarn story pre-Jedi Knight...  Just do something that isn't the same old same old.  LA's not done well with PC gaming for a while.

Star Wars Universe / Re: Revenge of the Sith made all EU wrong!
« on: August 11, 2005, 12:56 AM »
Perhaps Obi-Wan's not being totally "honest" with Luke once more?  Maybe his leaving is a means of detatching the "strings" that tie him to Luke (attachment being a no-no by the views of the Jedi and all that) and so Obi-Wan's just trying to make it easier on Luke by letting go?  Letting Luke develope and grow on his own now.

I know I wouldn't trust that old fogy. :)

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Jedi After Episode 3?
« on: August 11, 2005, 12:54 AM »
I dunno.  In Episode I, Qui-Gon goes relatively undetected for the most part until Ani spots the saber...  The Poncho was not much of a disguise, so perhaps that's just the "style" some people choose while others have Solo-ish outfits, and others like the "flightsuit" look?  It seems fashion's about as diverse as the # of different species in the galaxy.

This could be some pro's in the argument that Jedi survive and are able to go into hiding.  The Empire maybe institutes stricter means of identification...  Somewhat (to draw the Nazi parallel) like the Nazi Party's strict ID checks and such, and the need for any person to offer up ID at any point it is requested.  It adds an interesting variable to the Empire's growth.

The Cujo rumor was mentioned for the first time in today's paper, but didn't get much play...

Thibault?  Hmmm...  Well if they're just looking for a mentor and not a starter.

The thing I noticed with Obi's Robes is that Jedi robes in general seem to be a common looking outfit.  For instance, check out Uncle Owen.  His outfit is really not terribly off from a Jedi's...

Luke's shirt's very "Jedi-ish" too...

Throughout Mos Eisley, there's a lot of random people that wear robes that look a lot like a Jedi's, at least to me they do.  Maybe those robes are just what people with a little less cash tend to wear?

So has anyone been able to track down this Lava Lamp at all?

I'm at a loss.  Never seen one, none on Ebay...  Not that I find anyway.  Any help with this, from anyone at all, and I'd greatly appreciate it.  THis is really sorta pissing me off that I can't find this item.  I want one for sure.   :-\

Pens were looking at Burke too and he declined the offer and went to Tampa I guess...  Never heard much about Cujo around here at all.  Never made much in the local news so I'm guessing that wasn't a real substantial rumor.

I dunno why they're after a mentor for Fleury now really, but whatever.

So I picked up 2 of the BBI Paratroopers tonight...

The good?

-Articulation is above and beyond anything before done by BBI.  It's amazing what hinged elbows can do to figures who've done nothing but looked like **** with their piss-poor angle-cut elbows.  These guys are great though.

-Legs Apart...  BBI apparantly learned that the ****-tacular way their last couple waves of figures looked because their legs were awkwardly close together just wasn't working, so they fixed them up and now they're looking great.  Much better spacing.  Very realistic.

-Gear...  Armed to the teeth these guys are.  Some come with 2 firearms, and each ahs a heavy-weapon pack-in except one who has a duffel bag on his leg.  I got one with a kick-ass mortar and the duffel-bag guy.

They also have the first ever to-scale .45 pistols, and pineapple grenades.  Talk about kicking ass eh?  Smoke grenades too, lots of pouches...  They're just packed with gear.

-Headsculpts rock...  Really the sculpts overall rock, and it makes me only long for more WW2 items from BBI since 21st doesn't put **** at a decent retailer.  Great figures though, and the headsculpts are among their best ever if you ask me.  Just intensely realistic.  Good customizing fodder for Star Wars too!

And now, the bad and the ugly all in one...

While I like having the workking chute and all, it sucks more than enough ass that the vest and chute straps are all molded on the figure and not removable.  They look great for what they are, but I want combat ready Para's, not jumping para's, and that's gonna kill me buying anything but ONE set of these guys.

Had they been vest/chuteless, I'd want at least 3 of each figure if not more.  They're just that F'n great.  I'm sad that BBI went this other route though.  They did a great job, but they gotta ditch these packs so the figures can actually be used in multiple dioramas other than jumping or pre-jump looks.

So, that one little slight kinda killed my "high" on these.  They're neat, but only neat enough for one set and that sucks.  :(  I wanna army build, dammit.

The Collection 2 Jedi in general were pretty great...  at least till Zet Jukassa.

Agen and Ki-Adi Mundi were probably the tops though in my view...  I'd definitely add Kit Fisto to that list though as well.  He's probably the best "generic" looking one out of the group as far as outfits go.  Agen's close, but I did have trouble with his arm's poseability while Kit Fisto was just fan-frickin' tastic for any pose.

Pilot Obi-Wan's blowing them all away judging by the pics I see, but Collection 2 was just some of the best Jedi figures.  I still call them the "Apologies" from Hasbro. :)  Profuse "sorry" with every figure for it's inevitably ****** version that came out in Saga's run.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: #55 Obi-Wan Kenobi-Red Leader Pilot
« on: August 10, 2005, 01:24 AM »
You guys are killing me! :)

I think part of his pegwarming status has to be the fact that Jedi Fodder's in no short supply right now too.  I've noticed the better a figure is overall the more it does tend to move (or at least the longer it moves, and steadier).  Customizing has its place I think in the dwindling of specific figures.  For instance, astromechs...  For all intents and purposes, astromechs are rather dull figures, but a good version of one tends to move no matter how many get out there.  Why would that be though?

I have noticed Agen Kolar's one of the faster moving Jedi from ROTS too...  Why?  I can only imagine it's the robe, the customizing potential...  Someone's making Jedi figures I'd think, otherwise it just seems odd that he'd move so much better than some of the other Collection 2 Jedi...

Tonight For the first time since 4/2 though, I can honestly say that Clones were in some level of supply at stores around here.  At least Toys R Us had a substantial quantity whereas WM and Target weren't so spiffed up.

Makes me wonder if Hasbro isn't working a little overtime to make TRU look better.  They tend to hold their retail hand a bit more than the others I know.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: #56 Mustafar Sentry
« on: August 10, 2005, 01:16 AM »
He's looked pretty sharp to me too, from pics anyway.  Not one I've seen myself, though we just are starting to get the Zett Jukassa wave in any decent numbers, haha.

Gotta love being all the way out here in EBF.  The east always gets hosed!   >:(

I'm SOOOOOOooo anxious to find the Obi-Wan Pilot, Mustafar Sentry, and AT-RT Driver soon...  Those, the clone variations, and the Anakin Evolutions sets are the last things I"m needing to be caught up right now, and unfortunately MOST of that I want multiples of.   :-\

Hey, sideshow figs come armed to the teeth...  No reason a Katarn figure shouldn't just be "accurate". :)

Power of the Jedi / Re: favorite POTJ figure

Those Amidala's are like Senator figures to me...  Articulation kind of becomes a secondary to sculpt because of the outfit.  It's tough to criticize Orn Free Tah as a bad figure because of articulation when he's just a big fattie.  He came out as a great figure for some dull Senator though.  Amidala's are kinda like that.
