Watto's Junk Yard / Re: What's your local sales tax?
« on: June 11, 2003, 04:16 AM »
The irony that Massachusettes would have taxation on everything possible. :)

Allegheny County is proposing a 10% alcohol tax which is pushing bars to protesting and such.  It's funny because in some instances you just cross a river and you're out of a county...  For going into the city to do your boozin' though, there's going to be a price hike.

I for one don't mind, but I see where the bars are coming from too.  Such is life though...

No Star Wars tax though ever I hope...  Sometimes this hobby's taxing enough. :)

I live in Armstrong County which is 6.25% I believe?

Allegheny County which is Pittsburgh's county is 7.25% I believe, and Westmoreland County (which is between sort of to the left and below Allegheny) is around 7%.

Obviously, the further from a city you get the lower the tax rate generally.

COL for Pittsburgh is generally low overall though, as opposed to a city like Chicago, LA, NY, and whatnot...  And it's voted the 2nd most beautiful place in the United States...  So there's some other benefits.   :D

- The Battledroid formations prior to the Battle of Naboo.  I liked the uniform way they lined up, their artillery barage as infantry marched towards the Gungan lines...   I honestly would've changed only how the Gungans fought, and Jar Jar's behavior in the battle...  Given Tarpals a little more time.  To me, the droids made that battle though, and it was reminiscent of Picket's Charge from Gettysburg with how the droids marched into battle.

-The moment Maul appears in the Naboo Hangar...  I still remember people getting totally pumped just because of how bad@$$ he looked standing there, then he ignites the sabre...

You can't top a moment like that, and how it got a major reaction from the crowd.

-The Naboo pilots...  Highly underused, and definately reminiscent of the classic films.  A shame that Lucas made the battle revolve around Anakin.  I much rather would've seen Anakin fly up, actually perform semi-well (natural ability instead of tripping into success), and see more of the pilots work in tandom with him...

Ric Olie could've been a new "Wedge Antilles" heroe had they taken the initiative to make him so.

-Yoda's moments with the younglings in E2...  There's something about how he acts in those moments that make him more like the Yoda in the classic movies than ever.  His calm demeanor with children, his casual playful taunting of Master Kenobi...

That's a "classic" moment that makes you appreciate Lucas a little more.  It's funny, but not over the top at all, and right up the mischevious lil Master's alley for his behavior as we've seen him act on Dagobah.

-Dexter Jetster...  I just like the character, so I like his scenes.  He's big, he's ugly, but he's unique...  I also like the idea Obi-Wan hasa informants that maybe aren't as scrupulous as himself.

-Watto...  Same as Dexter.  Great CGI character, definately a believeable part of Star Wars, and definately a testament to the skill of ILM animators.  Watto also embodies everything bad, but it's odd because you still like his character on some level.  It's like he's down on his luck come E2 and you feel bad for him with his dumb hat.

-The Senate...  I like how the Senate's designed/set up.  I think Lucas did a wonderful job with it, and I think all Senate scenes have been 100% solid.  They're the most boring from a story standpoint, and likely only kept the hardcore fan's attention, but they are definately well done.

-Oddly enough, and I know I'm going to catch it for this, but I like Anakin's breakdown in the Lars family's garage....   Hear me out here though.

To me, a major point of the prequals is the evil that is entailed with one's emotions.  I think that Lucas is showing in a not-so-subtle way (unlike the classics) that emotion is the root of all evil, but it's also the root of all good.

I like that about the prequals, and I felt that Hayden Christensen's acting was actually quite fitting (and good, because I think it was intended to be "overly emotional) for the theme.  His crying fit, his throwing things...  It's that little rumble of thunder underneath.

Not to mention he just slaughtered a tusken tribe completely.

-The whole "Search for Shmi" set to Duel of the Fates...  Come on, that was great.  Even stopping to ask some Jawas.  :)

-The Podrace...  Some dislike it, and it slows the story down for sure because it happens in the middle of a lull in the story really.  The thing I like about it is that it is visually one of the most complex CGI sequences ever.  It's definately eye candy though, and well done eyecandy to boot.

It adds a bit of excitement, but it still doesn't do so while adding to the story though.

-Various moments of the Battle of Geonosis...  I'd have redone the battle and it would've turned out MUCh different, but it does have its interesting points, and it's fun to watch.

I just still feel a space battle was needed, as was a more uniformed/structured ground battle.  I'd have definately not edited the battle down like Lucas did....  So what if it made the film a bit longer?  It needed to be, and in a hellacious ball of excitement like TBoG, I think nobody would've minded.

-Of course the asteroid sequence...  :)  Everyone likes the asteroid sequence.

I'm sure I have many other favorite moments too, I just am tired after writing all this other stuff out.

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Re: Amy Builder 3-packs pics.....

I just got these yesterday, and I want to clarify a few things. They do have "some" articulation, but not much.
Standing: (6 points) neck, both arms, left wrist, 2 points at the waist-above and below the belt.
Kneeling: (6 points) all same points except it's the right wrist on this figure
Lying: (5 points) neck, both arms, right wrist, 1 point at the waist.

These are actually "OK"
A little dissappointing, but hey they are pretty cool for dioramas, NOT for "the ultimate white Clone" that we originally thought we were getting.
Hope this helps

Just a little update to the picture link...  Someone who says he owns the set says the figures are surprisingly sporting 5 or 6 points of articulation each.  not much, but it does improve them somewhat.

It at least leaves some customizing possibilities open for us anyway...  A simple single piece would've really REALLY lessened my opinion of these.  For $10 though, each figure should have a handful of articulation points to at least acheive SOME kind of variety in poses, and leave ya some decent parts to work with if you customize.

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Army Builder 3-pack pics...
« on: June 10, 2003, 05:43 AM »
I'm a tad surprised nobody's mentioned these over here, so I figure I'll make a post on it...

The 3-packs of droids, droideka shooter, and posed clones are up over at www.galactichunter.com for your viewing pleasure.

Lots of great shots of each figure are available, which is always appreciated.

My response to these hasn't changed a lot personally...  I don't see $10 as a BAD price per say, but it's not the end-all-be-all deal of the century either like some are claiming it to be.

It's "alright" is all...  I still say Hasbro needs to get off their duff and make a fully poseable clone with a natural "neutral" pose.  Mass market that in the white deco and THEN I'll buy a ton...  As a completist, I may just get one set of 3 white clones...  I may pass on the color rank variations.  Not sure (one side says to buy them, another says no).

The droid's are dummed down too, if you didn't know, and aren't as poseable it seems...  A real waste considering the molds for these were already produced.  I feel that's the REAL disapointment, as I sort of assumed the clones weren't going to be good for much of anything.

I had hopes for the droids, but that appears to be for not.  The red droid looks goofy standing there with its gun and its arms out.  A boil/freeze may work for the red droid at least.  I'm just kind of disappointed that I'll get an unposeable SBD and Droideka as well though.   :-\

I mean, I can boil/freeze 3 red BD's to look cool enough (and they did make them "break-apart" which is an improvement IMO), but what am I gonna do with the other 2 unposeable droids?

Seems a bit silly to me.

I think the set should've been 1 SBD, and 2 red BD's.  Then the Droideka set separate...

The Droideka shooter is ok...  Nothing amazing, but I'll knock those cheap-@$$ clones around with the rolling Droideka, you bet your sweet bippy on that.

Since the prequals aren't a cutsomizing focus for me, and aren't likely to be anytime soon, I'll just have to wait and see what they maybe work on for a GREAT basic poseable clone.  Maybe someday...  maybe someday.   :'(

PS: The paint aps are NOT good on these...  Dare I say they appear to be as shoddy as the recent Imperial 4-packs, and possibly worse.  The droids looked a little better than the clones though.

Maybe it's the white/black uniforms that make the poor paintjobs stand out, who knows?

I've never sold on Ebay actually, just bought some.

I'd like to get back their cover prices though, and I just don't know that would happen on Ebay...  Then I'd just have a listing fee to pay. :)

I used to buy so many of the comics, but since the comic shop died out here I just don't collect them anymore.  Oddly enough my local grocery store gets them in regularly if I wanted to pick up the habit again. :)

The Original Trilogy / Re: Endor Troopers dissapearing?
« on: June 9, 2003, 04:25 AM »
For the Endor soldiers, Han told them to meet up at the bunker as I recall.  That was so they could split up to search for Leia.  Since they are at the bunker, they've just been off avoiding Imperial capture I guess, till they could meet up with Han.

What's a better question...  Where's the REST of them?  There were 3 Dresellian scouts who went along with them, as per the hangar scenes in ROTJ (at least 3 Dresellians are seen walking into the Tyderium, so unless they were just checking out the interior I'd say they went along) and the Shuttle can hold many more troops...  It's likely many more went.  Enough to fill the shuttle fairly well anyway.

I've always felt those other troops went off looking for another way in, or were sabotaging various areas of the Imperial Garrison on Endor...  The various elements of the Imperial base are spread out, so maybe the 2nd commando party was off causing some trouble?  They possibly even diverted the Imperial's attention to the main entrance of the power complex?  Hard to say for certain, as almost anything's possible.

When Han and the crew are leaving the Tyderium though, there's only a handful of troops following them though, so those other fellows took off somewhere. :)

As for where Rieekan went, I think I have something for that one.  The base had seemingly been evacuated.  Since Rieekan was the base commander, he'd be shuffled off immediately.  I'd wager he was at the transport site where Luke met up with Rogue Squad to get his X-Wing.

In the game Rogue Leader, the Battle of Hoth is played out in its entirety, sort of...  You see the Imperials from their landing zone all the way to their actual 2 fronts.

One front is an assault on the Ion Cannon complex by waves of AT-ST's and infantry which must be taken out first.

The second front is the main trench, and presumably the "North Ridge" where Leia was diverting troops...  Also this would be the "hangar" bay, so it makes sense since she said "to protect the fighters" if I am recalling correctly my dialogue...

Leia stuck behind I guess just so a competent leader was there (She would be a morale boost, especially if we follow the EU that says most of the troops at Hoth were Alderaanian nationals who wanted to get some payback).  Leia's presence "in charge" would give a morale boost then, but it's also assuming she knows a thing or two about military tactics.  By Jedi she's wearing the uniform of some form of Alliance Officer though, and at Hoth she is diverting troops rather forcefully.  She may be more than just good at working the Senate floor. :)

Rikeean though would definately be shuffled off quickly.  I'd say one of the transports probably had a heftier fighter cover as a VIP transport of sorts...  Maybe it would even be launched just slightly behind 1 or 2 other transports in an attempt to have a decoy screen.

Competent officers with experience are supposedly in short supply for the Alliance though, so they're a valuable commodity.

Where's my damn Rikeean figure?  He's too cool to not have a figure yet...   ???

The Original Trilogy / Regime Change...
« on: June 8, 2003, 04:37 AM »
I was thinking about this tonight because it's 4 a.m., I can't sleep, and I think I have a chemical imbalance.

Anyway, So we see the political climate in Episode One right?  It's a half-@$$ed democracy of sorts, where not only do individual planets have representation but also financial institutions, and Business organizations...  It's also likely that trade guilds and labor organizations have some say in the galactic political process as well.

At the same time, it's this obviously corrupt and very slow process that leads to a civil war.

The "Separatists", or Confederacy join together to form an independant government aside from the Republic.  The Republic doesn't want this...  The most "recent" event we can liken this to on Earth (That the majority of us reading/contributing to this topic can relate to anyway) is the U.S. Civil War...  The Confederate States of America seceeded from the United States of America over individual rights.

It's similar in a way...

Now, we're led to believe the leaders of the Separatists are inheritly evil by Episode Two.  I don't necessarily BELIEVE they're all bad (Though I think it's established the Neimodians are).  EU has established several planets joining the secession as well who are leaving because they're genuinely fed up with the crap government handed them by the Republic.

OK, so by this we see that regime change was needed, right?  I mean, WE know the Republic was crap...

Problems could abound in the Republic's world that we have no clue of...  We know the Naboo conflict was one issue, and thinking of it in Earth terms it's as if the whole of our world's population were overthrown by an invading force, with millions of casualties...  That's a mass issue.  That's the equivalent of World War 2 happening within a month or so, for an example.

That's ONE conflict out of who knows how many other civil wars, conflicts and other issues that can be directly blamed upon the Republic's very poor structure.

OK, so the "dark times" come...  The Clone Wars end, and the Empire takes over...  The Empire gives some "System's rights" up until the events of A New Hope we know, because it's not until the Death Star's completion that the Emperor dissolves the Senate.

The Empire brings with it a change of rules I guess...  In some EU writing, the Empire's got some "fine points" set out that you cannot possibly get from movies that show it as 100% evil.  For instance the Empire sets up control on trade so that groups like the Trade Fed. cannot pull their blockade BS.  The Empire restricts arms trading, and expands space exploration/colonization.  The Empire takes a personal interest in every colonized world, either through small patrols or full garrisons.  The Empire attempts to curtail the "Scum" of the galaxy like Han Solo.  The Empire establishes training and schools.  In the game TIE Fighter, the Sepan Civil War (A system of human inhabited planets) is ceased by Imperial Intervention that's fair and just for both sides.

Anyway, we all know the "bad" stuff that comes with Imperial control as well...  The slavery, Alien prejudice & human priority, martial control of the galaxy, mass propoganda, control of personal freedoms, etc...

Now, during the Empire's time, the another civil war breaks out...  Several planets ally with each other, much like the separatists did prior to the Clone Wars onset.  They title themselves "The Alliance to Restore the Republic".  Sounds better I guess.  The Alliance seems hunky dorry by the film's view, but what are they asking for?

Well if they're truly wishing to restore the Republic, are they wishing to restore it to how it was?  It was pretty darn crappy by my estimation...  So why would you WANT to restore it?  Would crime run rampant again?  Would political backstabbing the wheeling/deeling of politicians not take over once more?

What's so great about the Alliance other than they say the Emperor's a bad guy, and point out where he is bad?

OK, so here's my question...  Which government do you want?  I'm going to request that you THINK of this as a human...  IE: Don't think "Well man I like wookies, and so I'd hate to be one in the Empire's reign"...  Just think of it like you're a human, though  having some sympathy is fine if that's what makes you choose the choice you do.

Alright, this is a goofy topic, I'm sorry...  Maybe it's just me, and stuff like this keeps my interest.   ;D  Feel free to ignore the topic all together if you find this 100% boring.

I'm thinking that I'm actually leaning towards the Empire...  I'm disheartened with the Republic after seeing the prequals.  The Empire sort of brings a "hope" the Republic didn't.  The only thing is, the Alliance is thinking idealisticly, and maybe they'd planned government changes to curtail political wrong-doings that ran rampant in the Old Republic.  I dunno...

I'm a bit on the fence on the issue I guess.  If you've played TIE Fighter, you'd be on the fence too.  It's quite an interesting story, and after playing it (And reading some of the "Empire's Side" in various forms) you'd question this too I believe.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: AT-ST
« on: June 8, 2003, 01:48 AM »
AT-ST's surprisingly small Angry Ewok...  VERY small actually, especially for a SW vehicle.  Don't give up all hope because of its size...

One with poseable legs could collapse into a VERY nice window box ala the TIE's we've gotten lately.

Could actually wind up taking up less space than the POTF/POTJ ST's have.

And like I said, last year we got a brand new Saga Landspeeder.  It was done in some of the best detail of a toy in this scale that I've seen, and was 100% new (with a decent pack-in).  Nothing's out of the realm of possibliity anymore after that thing.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: AT-ST
« on: June 7, 2003, 04:41 PM »
It's not out of the realm of possibility to get a new AT-ST some day...

It's a relatively small vehicle (especially for Star Wars), and thus its scale wouldn't be absurd.

I agree the original sculpt is looking dated...  I'd take one with a joint at each point on the leg that it should have, an opening 2-seater cabin, and complete accuracy.  The viewports would open as would the top hatch, the gun turrets (And grenade turret) would tilt up and down, and the head would turn left/right...

I'd dump the "walking" feature all together though, for poseable legs/feet instead (with good/stiff joints).

To-scale with an accurate ROTJ paint job...

The modern version suffers from a few major issues besides being underscaled.  Namely it's based on the design of AT-ST's in ESB as opposed to those of ROTJ which are much closer/easier to make out.  Of course one could always say the ESB version's a different "type" of AT-ST all together.

We got a scale landspeeder out of left field, so I hold hope someday a new AT-ST floats out.  I'd buy at least SIX of the things (Standard flanking formation for an AT-AT).   **wink wink**  :)

Ackbar:  "I will meet you in the speederbus station bathroom in 5 minutes"  ***drooling slightly***

Obi: ***waves hand again*** "You will not tell anyone about this..."

Ackbar:  "I will not tell anyone about this..."

Obi:  ***Waves hand again***  "You will receive a chocolate bar from me...."

Ackbar:  "You'll give me a chocolate bar..."

Obi:  ***waves hand*** "move along..."

Eh, for some reason I thought of Beavis when Butthead made fun of him for "meeting that guy in the bathroom stall", then Beavis telling Butthead to shut up but saying "At least I got a candybar out of it..."

The Original Trilogy / Re: How does Vader know who "Luke" is?
« on: June 6, 2003, 03:24 PM »
Quote
Whose to say the name Skywalker isn't any more common than, say, Williams or Smith or Chin? I'm sure Vader wouldn't read too many applicant's papers until after they've proven themself worthy of being in his special squadrons.

Another thing to consider...  Other last names around the galaxy we know of aren't really "similar" to Luke's last name style...  For instance:

Veers
Ozzel
Piett
Tarkin
Solo
Antilles (x2)
Organa
Palpatine
Naberrie
Kenobi
Windu
etc...

Now, Skywalkers name is kind of like "Shoemaker" here on Earth...  You hear Shoemaker, and you know it's an English name immediately.  Skywalker, Darklighter, etc...  They seem to be a "native" style of name for Tatooine residents possibly.

If that's the case, the likelihood of it being a common name is slimmed down some.  It certainly seems like a Tatooine kinda thing to me then.  And at the very least, if Vader heard the name Skywalker, who blew up the death star, and who Vader himself said "the force is strong with this one", then there's some simple deduction that it's a force sensetive skywalker...

Tack onto that Obi-Wan sacrificing himself so these 3 young rebels and their droids could escape...  And the whole "glance" over at Luke...  Could Vader have put all this together?  Hell, maybe Obi-Wan was even thinking of Luke at the time (Seems he might have been) and Vader could sense/read that from him...  Maybe Obi WANTED Vader to find out about Luke...  Let him know there's someone out there who can turn the tide.

Do you think that nothing happened between A New Hope ESB and ROTJ?? At the end of ROTJ, Luke and the gang just packed up and went home and that was that??

Well MJ, I'm not sure they don't believe anything happened between films, or after ROTJ, or before ANH and whatnot...  I think Movie Purists either simply follow only GL's telling of the story since he's the creator (There's people in the Star Trek world who are the same, and feel none of Trek after Roddenberry's death is "legit"), or the Movie Purists feel the EU they've read is pure crap.

Like I said, I'm not a movie purist, but it is all that's canon so it's all I accept as "canon" for Star Wars...  The rest I pick and choose, and I'm REALLY picky about what EU I like...  Some I feel is totally hack writing, with little to no imagination.  Essentially I feel that I personally could've made a more creative story, character(s), setting, etc...

I would suppose those are the two ways "movie purists" think though.  Some find it poor writing/general quality, and others just don't think anything other than Lucas is "true Star Wars" as I've heard it called.

Now in my little Star Wars world, there's some great stories I accept as 100% Star Wars, like Force Commander's story (Which is a good one), or the open-ended story of X-Wing: Alliance...  Kyle Katarn's story is another I really enjoy, and the Zahn Trilogy as well.  The thing is though, like I said, for every good story there are 2 or 3 HORRIBLE stories, and a few that are questionable.

That doesn't bode well for EU support I suppose.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: THIRD Imperial Officer head variant is a go!
« on: June 6, 2003, 03:04 PM »
I've been sayin' for ages that they need to make a 4-pack of these...

Make 2 in black with the Saga head variations, and 2 in grey with the Saga head variations.  Pack in 2 blasters and 2 Scanner boxes.

Voila, instant hot seller at barely any cost.

And the peasants rejoice.

22815
I'm not an EU basher, but more an EU critic...  Of course, some just diss EU based on it not being part of the movies, and that's fine (I can understand movie purists).

I'm borderline a movie purist, but only because the movies are the only "canon" and the rest is up to the fan to decide...

That to me leaves EU open to greater criticism, but it also leaves it open to being more fun.  In Star Trek you don't pick and choose...  It's all "Canon" and there's no debate on that.  So if something crops up you totally dislike, then you're kind of SOL about having an imagination that differs from it.

I personally think though, that the SW EU has more bad than good generally...  And I think it's that lopsided quality that has turned some off to EU 100%.  For every Thrawn Trilogy there's 2 Dark Empire's...  Literally (haha, my lil joke).

What's quality is quality though...  To me, the Zahn trilogy are as close to the movies in terms of "quality" as they can be, without being canon.  The thing is though, that then you have umpteen other little things that aren't so great...

Then there's some things that the opinions are split on 50/50 too...  Things like the NJO series where half the people love them, and the other half hate them.  I for one like parts of them, but I hate certain MAJOR parts of them too (The Yuzahn Vong for instance).  At the same time though, I find the resurgeance of the Jedi Academy under Luke as exactly how I'd imagined it.

I've found that a lot of the EU I like are the smaller things, like snippits and characters from the 2 SW RPG's, or details from particular stories as opposed to the stories themselves...

Another biggie EU thing I love are the games.  I've found FEW games that I felt were EU "crap".  Storylines in games like Force Commander, Katarn's story (Dark Forces/JK), X-Wing/TIE Fighter sims, Rogue Squadron, etc., are all great storylines which fit flawlessly, or fit with a little creative thought (Or abstract thinking at times).

I find EU's biggest flaws though, are too often they try to tie everything together...  Not in continuity, but in specific characters.  It's something I hate about the Prequals too.  Greedo's not necessary fighting Anakin at the tender age of 8, and IG-88 didn't need to upload himself into the DSII's computer core.

Other areas of EU that I find disturbing are the "Super weapon of the week club" mentality...  Something Thrawn avoided with his trilogy by making an interesting villain.  A tactical genius over a super weapon.

NJO got away from the super weapon, but they came up with a super villain that is too close to other sci-fi villains (Namely star trek) to suit me.  Like I said, NJO has some nice details to it, but the Vong are too major a plot point for me to get into the series.  I know the gist of it, I just don't care for it anymore.

I felt the EU took some wrong turns at one point though, and it makes post ROTJ era reading a bit tough for me.  Unfortunately, in the EU deluge of the '90's, it solidified EU as what it is...  There's room for "new" things to be thrown in though, so I always look forward to some of that.  For instance the Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy (And Mysteries of the Sith) plotlines take place in the NJO-ish era or just prior, but they don't deal with the specifics of the novels.  The only thing they've actually covered is some minor Jedi training on Yavin IV, and Kyle/Mara's crossover stories.

EU's great though, because if you don't like something you can simply ignore it and go with what you WANT to go with.  It's there, but it's not canon.

Freedom of the reader/viewer's imagination is what makes Star Wars EU great, more so than any story could.
