The Original Trilogy / Re: TIE Fighters....
« on: April 8, 2004, 12:18 AM »
A TIE Pilot is seen ejecting in TESB actually, so it's canon that they CAN eject...  He ejects on fire when an asteroid hits his fighter, but he ejects straight upward, nonetheless.

EU claims both Imperial and ALliance pilots CAN eject, but Imperials use an automated system as opposed to a manual one, and the Alliance can use either/or.  Automated if they're prepared to use it (IE: set it to on, and have their life-supprt gear on), or manual if they need to get their stuff on if they know they're in a bad situation they aren't getting out of.

Consequently, it's one of the more fragile systems in all fighters, and often the first to be rendered inoperable it seems....  Then again, flight control was lost very often for me in the X-Wing sims as well.  Hated when that happened.  If I was lucky, nobody was targeting me and I either culd dump all power to engines and hope to outrun anyone who came for me (in a straight, unmaneuverable line away from combat), or I was hosed....  And if engines went too, I was more or less FUBAR.

2 video game "bogarts" from Clone Wars...

-First, in one of the ARC Trooper episodes, the one troop raises his rifle and there's a "click click" sound, which sounds like someone "Lock and Loading" a weapon...  Anyone know the sound I mean?

This was actually a soundbite from the original Dark Forces game from WAY back when.  Took it direct and put it in Clone Wars.  Cooooool homage to a great game.

-Second is the steaming lightsabers...  Or I think it is personally.  In Jedi Academy (the last Dark Forces/Jedi Knight game), there's several duels you perform as the main character in rain ranging from thunderstorms to downpours that go from a dead stop to light to heavy.  The sizzling lightsaber is exactly the same...  I think they pulled that from the game personally...  Otherwise it's just an eeerie coincidence. :)

Anyway, onto my impressions of the Anakin/Assajj episodes...

I'll keep this short, but basically I enjoyed them.  A bit much at times with the hopping around and things, but that appears to be a theme to the Clone Wars.  Lots of over-the-top Jedi action...  Use of force powers beyond the films, etc...

It's neat, but the Assajj/Anakin fight came into its own in the last episode when he offed her using the darkside.  GREAT climax.  Great enemy pawn character.  Great effects to show him "turning" and using his dark powers.  Great death for Assajj.  Great weather effects with the thunderstorm to set the mood.

This episode, in and of itself, embodies Star Wars, and the hype that SHOULD circle Episode III.

Great stuff, and a great way to show Anakin's not just disobeying orders, but he's also acting out on his dark emotions now...  Anger's going beyond vengeance for a loved one, but to all out rage when fighting his enemies.  Overpowering them as Luke overpowerd Vader himself at the end of ROTJ.

This is right up there as the best episode of the series.  Can't wait for the last two, to see if they top it.  Good stuff.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Vintage OTC Figures

Yeah, seriously about the case ratios...  Leave it to  Hasbro to do everything within their power to F up these figure's release.

Ultimately they'll claim it's the retailer's fault somehow, but my god what are they thinking on these cases?  She's not really "short-packed", but she's not gonna be even with the boys.  And with the word these aren't reshipping, that's a BAD thing.  :(

I used to watch it, but didn't religiously.  The Gym episodes were so hauntingly realistic...  Uh, not for me of course, I was an athletic god, and stuff.   ;D

It was underappreciated, and part of the show's problem was that it was on at like 8 on a Friday wasn't it?  Old people watch shows at 8 on Friday...  And well, freaks and geeks.   :-\

« on: April 4, 2004, 04:34 AM »
Yeah, I kind of make my list(s) on these with the single intent that they get re-released on regular cardbacks.  There's no excuse not to, considering the mold toolings would cost less to make them more available for the cheaper price.

If you nab an extra mint one Matt, keep me in mind, just because I don't know what my odds of going to a TRU tomorrow are between the weather here and the fact I have an exam Monday again.  I just want to keep my 25th figure set going on a 1-per-figure and mint basis.  :)

My 4, 5, and 6 would go something like this....

ANH
-Tarkin
-Death Star Trooper
-*drum roll* Rebel Fleet Trooper
-Generic Rebel X-Winger (Blue emblems, black visor)

ESB
-Hoth Han Solo
-Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder Pilot)
-Hoth Rebel Soldier
-Hoth Imperial Soldier

ROTJ
-Han Endor (Trench Coat)
-Luke Endor
-Leia Endor
-Biker Scout

Of course, I'd also like all these to see wider release too, especially the army builders in 3-packs with head variations.  :)

My ex-girlfriend called me today and said she was pregnant, and it's mine.

It wasn't all that funny, really. I about **** my pants though.

It would've been funnier had she said it wasn't yours.  :)  Not to you of course.  Jokes never are funny when they're against you I guess.

This brings me to a thought though...

There's a guy over at Rebelscum who, so I don't mix words here, I simply dislike.  He's a kid, and generally that garners some sympathy from me, but not in this instance.  He's just annoying.

He changes his name more than his clothes, he posts incessantly with "Me too!" type crap, he clutters the "poll" feature there...  Very silly.

And now to top it off, he's taking a nutty on everyone posting stupid April Fool's Day joke threads.

Now, granted, it is stupid...  I hate April Fool's Day because it wastes some of my time generally, and none of it's REAL funny (Save Greg's admission of his CC.com Fandom), but it's just dull to me for the most part and time consuming in the end.

With that, I have to say I dislike the "day", but I don't get PO'd about it.  This kid at Scum's running around telling people that post that they're spamming (which is irony defined) and then yelling at them demanding that some of them "Go to Hell" as was his last line of idiocy.

Getting mad about AFD is counteractive.  It's made for the only entertainment I got out of yesterday, again short of that picture of GNT.

I know you're not mad about it Tydirium, but I'm citing mostly this other individual (and a couple others) at Scum who've posted multiple times, in multiple threads, in multiple sections, about how vehemently they despise AFD and want people who like it to shut up and leave the forums for a time.

To me, it's a day you just have to put up with.  At least it's only once a year.

Well, it's shaping up that the Pens will have the #1 draft pick, and ironically to likely pick the player being touted as "the next Lemieux".

Let all of us in Pittsburgh pray.    ::)

My view?

It's War...  This happens in all wars.  This isn't an isolated incident to the Iraq War, or Iraqi people.  U.S. citizens and troops have done simiilar things, especially when our nation's been invaded and occupied.

Brutality is war defined, no matter who is in the war's zone, and for whatever reasons they're there.

Yeah, I saw Even Steven not TOO long ago, but it seems like it's been a while for what it once was...

I like that once or twice a week we get Lewis Black Editorials.  They are easily my highlight of the show, short of John Stewart himself.  And that says a lot since I love damn near every spot that show does.

Vance Degeneres is missed sorely, and he is irreplaceable, but there are good substitutes in at least.  I'd actually not even really missed him till you mentioned his name, but when you think back to the great bits he did he is missed then.  The new people have done such a great job though that I haven't missed a beat with the show, and Stewart is the perfect host...

I liked Craig Killborne (sp?) at the time, but Stewart makes him look like a chump, seriously.

Tonight's episode had me howling...  I think tomorrow is Back in Black night...  Not sure.  I think they do it semi-regular on Wednesdays?  I actually look forward to this little 30 minute program every day...  :)  Way to go Comedy Central.

CC is like the only decent TV on anymore to me.  Short of Star Trek TNG Re-runs on Spike (DS9 reruns too, yay!), Comedy Central just has me fixated.  They have some stupid ideas at times, but shows like Insomniac, Chapelle, South Park, Tough Crowd, and the Daily Show keep me locked on there most of the evening when I'm at home.

The only other channels I can say I actually watch are the History Channel, Spike, and the local news channels...  CNN if something "big" is up, but beyond that it's CC all the way. :)

I have a slightly mixed reaction on 12 and 13...  (Missed 12, had to wait to d/l today...  crap in a hat)

Anyway, here's my take...

12 starts out awesome.  A collossal battle with taking place on the rural Dantooine (BTW, neat to see that Dantooine still looks futuristic, but has a sort of agricultural and docile theme going on.  An entire planet like that, with few cities, and at one point a big ass rebel base makes this planet all the more believable and interesting to me, but I digress).  Basically everything looks cool.

The battle's playing out well too, with the child's perspective on the hillside really adding to it.  You see Droids and Clones in everything from hand-to-hand combat to wild blasting.  I would say that a minor complaint is that this battle fell prey to the prequal battles as well, in that it has no rhyme or reason to it.  It's a haphazard mish-mash of intermingled troops blasting the hell out of each other, rather than a seemingly definitive "line in the sand" that two sides are clashing over...

That would've made the battle slightly more believable to me, but whatcha gonna do, ya know?  It was still sort of neat, but there just wasn't any "form" to the function...  They didn't even appear to fight over anything, did anyone else notice this?  I saw no clear objective, like a Separatist base, or something.

Anyway, Mace kicked ass in it, and that was cool.  I can buy the over-the-top stuff in 12, as Mace seems like he'd be a bit extra tough in battle.  A guy not to be trifled with.

The "ground pounder" or whatever the hell it was, was neat, but sort of disappoionting too.  I can only accept it as some attempt at an experimental weapon by the Separatists, but to me it smacks of  yet again the "Super weapon syndrome" that plagues much of the EU.  I've seen others liken it to World Devastators, and I agree, and World Devastators sucked the first time around so I dislike the concept from the start.

That said, the thing seemed simplistic...  It was intended to just F up a battlefield where the separatists were maybe losing, so that basically nobody wins the battle.  I can accept that (I'm trying to convince myself anyway), and the vehicle wasn't out sucking up natural resources like the stupid Devastators did.  That's lame.

These were simple pile drivers...  We have thingsn like this on Earth, just smaller, so I guess I can see the goofy attempt at making one a weapon.

Their effects...?  Well, I'm not physics major, but I somehow question the whole process somewhat, but I'll just overlook it.

Overall then, I liked the episode.  Hardcore combat, little dialogue (sometimes that's good), and lots of neat, gritty, "realistic" military stuff that makes you think this IS a war, and not just some super-hero crap...  That's cool.

Chapter 13 then...

I liked 13 for the same reasons as 12, and mostly as a wrap-up to 12 (which is all it was), but the excessive force-power useage by Mace kind of fell flat on me.

So when Mace wigs out with the Force, he turns into the incredible hulk and can destroy anything with a flick of his wrist?  Damn...

Had this been toned down some, I'd have liked it more.  it works for a toon, but if this were a comic, or video game, or *gasp* film, I'd had hoped  it would've been more "realistic" as they say.  I could see him kicking some droid butt, but not EVERY droid butt without a saber.  That just strikes me as odd, and makes you wonder why he, or anyone else didn't do this at Geonosis.

If you went by Clone Wars, you'd think Mace could've rescued Anakin, Obi, and Padme at Geonosis himself, ya know?

The way he got into the ground pounder thing sorta sucked.  I would've liked a more "real" method of getting in it, like a commandered vehicle of some sort.  That's just my take there though.

Short of those couple minor things that I'd change, I liked this episode too...  IT was really fun, and the way it ended was great.

The handing of the drink to Mace only needed Mace handing his tattered Jedi Robe to the little boy to make it more a parallel to the 1970's Coca Cola commercial where Mean Joe Green gives his game Jersey to a kid who offered him his Coke in the players entrance.  Any Pittsburgh fan (especially the die-hards from the old-school Steel Curtain I'd imagine) catches that one right away.  Good stuff.

Mace = Joe Green...  Hmmm....  Funny.  :)

So, in short, 2 great episodes...

I would just like to see a LITTLE more structure to the battles...  At least make them look like there's 2 sides, ya know?  And tone down the Jedi abilities slightly.  I think this is more the style of the animators more than anything, but it's a bit over the top...  I don't think it'd hurt the "action" to make things slightly more believable.

The ground pounder things kinda bite, but they're better than the lobster super laser the Quarren used.  THAT was, to say the least, a terrible idea.  Too Death Star-ish, and didn't even look real creative, nor add to the story if you ask me.  That's all old news though.
