Revenge of the Sith / Re: When will the clearances begin?
« on: April 14, 2005, 08:21 PM »
I think ROTS is doing better than Saga's initial launch did...  There's noticeable difference.  I even see people in the SW aisle at every store I stop at, even kids, looking at figures.  I didn't see ANYONE for AOTC, and that coupled with not seeing product really move seems telling to me...  even if it's just a personal observation.

I think we'll see clearances later on this than with AOTC's launch, but I think we'll see them nonetheless.  Some stuff just isn't moving, especially the Col. 1 figures and stuff like Mothma, Bail, etc...

Yeah, this camera is old, but she gave it to me for free since she got one to replace it that's much superior...  I can't complain since I was camera-less.  :)

I wanted to just show how compatible the Hot Toyz figs are with Star Wars figures really, not going for any "diorama of the year" prize there.  I just threw my portfolio binder open real quick for a background (innovative?  Eh) and voila...

The alien seems around the right scale to me though people have debated that with me.  I recall seeing production of the Aliens movies though and guys inc ostumes were often used, so the Aliens aren't huge.  Only certain ones would be bigger than the average person.  Plus the alien CAN stand taller than a human, but it's not HUGE.

Predator figs stand about right too.  The guy that played the Predator in the first Pred movie was from Pittsburgh actually.  He's a big dude, but still in the realm of a basketball player or "Wookiee" type height.  The Preds seem ok then to me.  They're bigger than most SW figures.

I'll snap grainy pictures of a pred with some sw figs and of the "Chase" alien too, which is what I'm just assuming this is at this point.

Oh man, these pics suck, but htis was my lame attempt at showing an ill-fated Stormtrooper patrol on an alien-infested world...

Toy Reviews / New Review: Myo
« on: April 14, 2005, 02:32 AM »

Coming back atcha with another review, and this one's kicking off a doozey of a wave of figures...  The Cantina Wave!  And more specifically, we pick apart Myo in today's review...

Myo is point man then, and he's no slouch folks...  Don't let the drunken stagger and the frosty brew in his hands fool you.

None of this wave is really bad either, but of course nobody is perfect, even one-eyed green freaks with big "Ambrose Burnside" muttonchops!  This figure still ranks as one of my favorites in the modern line though, as does the entire wave, so I'm gonna give this guy lots of praise.

So READ RIGHT HERE the full review, and of course feel free to share your thoughts/opinions with us on this figure as well.

Gotta love those freaky background aliens.  This is the type of thing Hasbro puts out that makes collectors giddy to find in the aisles of their local retailers!

I just got more stuff from Paul today...  Now I gotta pay him, haha.

:)

Obviously Paul's a great guy to trade with...  He's an asset here at JediDefender, we're happy he's on board with us!

I'll take a "General Hicks" figure in Star Wars!  :)

Be nice if they cranked out a lot of those though...  Generics would be fine too, if they didn't wanna piss around with "Vasquez", "Hicks", and the like...  Be nice if they did though.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Thoughts?
« on: April 14, 2005, 01:29 AM »
I'm all for canon over EU mostly, but I think the VD just interprets canon (the films) differently...  That's where things get fuzzy.  I think canon's indisputeable in instances of, say, the scale of an SSD being larger than the "EU" established 11km or whatever it is...  That's canon because there's film evidence that can prove that and no real reason to dispute it...

The whole Vader/Force Lightning thing...  Sounds like a Lucas retread on some level, but I can also bite that it's just another person's opinion of how the force works...

I'm not sure where I stand on Vader's ability (or lack thereof) in using the force lightning...  I just haven't thought of it too much.  I see credence to both arguments.  Lucas has changed the Force from the classic films to the prequals though.  I know my view of it was a little shattered after midichlorians, haha.

I have the warrior alien holding a limp VOTC Stormtrooper by the head/helmet...  To say this looks cool is an understatement.  Looks like someone just had a run-in with a nasty Imperial bio-weapons experiment.  :P

The only pred I've put together, and perhaps this was a bad idea, was the clear one.  I found that just visually it's tougher to put together so maybe I should've put together a basic pred.

I'll take pictures with my half-assed hand-me-down camera I got from my gf.  The pics will be sorta grainy but I like having something to take pictures with so she was kind enough to give me her old one here.

I'm thinking if I can get a very thin brass tack, I can cut angled "barbs" in it, and potentially drill a hole THROUGh the broken off ball and a little into the leg of the Alien that I broke the ball off of.  The barbs on the tack should anchor the tack into the plastic then, and if I can sorta form the tack's head so it fits flush with the ball then I should be able to salvage this Alien 100% without losing any range of motion, nor having any visible work I did.

We'll see.

The red alien's somewhat a mystery then since it doesn't list what it is...  I'm sorta curious what its name/species is or whatever.

The grid one's paintjob is funky, and I like that they have see-through skulls too.  The Hot Toyz company went all out on this stuff.  Now, we really need to see some USCM figures because having seen the Predator, I am sure they can knock out human figures that are just as great.

Oh, one other gripe on the predators.

His backpack/hunting gun really kinda blows because his dreds get in the way of it functioning.  I don't have it on my clear pred at all, but I'm pondering a way to maybe customize a pred with "cloth" dreds so I can have one with a working pack/gun.  I dunno.  I found a place I can buy individuals for $9 each so I may just try that then.

MisterPL (and all),

Got my Hot Toys figure case in the mail today.  WOW.  Kicking ass and taking names.

I have 2 gripes really...

-Fragile...  If you don't heat them with hot water during construction, you risk a lot with these.  I broke a ball/socket on an Alien already and am desperately trying to fix it with a screw/rivet type method...  I shoulda been a neurosurgeon with this kind of intricate work. :)

-Fall apart Easily...  Kind of more a problem with Predators than Aliens though.  It's annoying that he pops apart a little too easy for my liking.

Now...

They're fairly poseable figures...  The Aliens are a bit moreso than the Preds, as the preds are hindered at times by looser joints and their armor.  The preds sport tremendously superior detail, which is no slight on the Aliens who are among the most intricately sculpted figures in this scale I've EVER SEEEN.

The Preds just feature everything from a REAL necklace of mini-skulls (Yes, a piece of string with teeny tiny skulls), to their mesh suits, and separately sculpted teeth pincer thingies.  The Preds just wow you.  Their knives fit in sheaths, their backpack gun swivels and aims with a multi-jointed arm.

To import these it cost $10-ish a figure.  Hasbro just found a new benchmark to meet because I'm sure in Asia these are about the same price as a regular SW figure is in the states.

So these are pretty incredible...  Plus I think I got a chase figure of an Alien.

MisterPL, did you get a red-colored alien?  The packaging doesn't show anything save for a translucent alien, a "grid" alien, a basic "warrior" alien, and a different warrior with his mouth open and the inner-jaws out.

I also got this RED alien though.  Completely different from the others and not listed on the packaging.  I did not get the Eldar predator which irks me.  I wanted him pretty badly but to no avail.

Did you get that one MisterPL?  Or this red alien?  Or did anyone get one of these for that matter?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Rebelscum Spam Mail? WTF???
« on: April 12, 2005, 07:34 AM »
I've been reading through things, and this is just a side comment I want to make because we are seeing an influx of new membership.  First I'll say we're happy to see all the new faces, we're happy you're here, and we're hoping for bigger and better conversation.

With that said, make no mistake that "quantity" increasing over at Jedi Defender isn't going to require a decline in quality either.  We have our rules established here, and we're (dare I say) even more strict than Rebelscum...  at least in some instances anyway.

A topic discussing an issue like this goes smoothly, but we've had our share of "trolls" too, and that's something Rebelscum rarely ever touches but which Jedi Defender will act swiftly to handle.  You can ask the people that are on our "banned" list how swiftly we act to behavior we deem inappropriate...  Condescending attitudes, name-calling, and  the like has earned more than one person a swift kick in the ass out our front door, not a doubt about that.

I know I came to Jedi Defender because my friends had come here, but also because i wanted to ESCAPE the post-padding, "kiddies", arrogant, rude, and condescending people who were allowed to basically walk on other members over at Scum, or run the show over there...  So needless to say, we run a tight ship here on some level as well, and definitely are more strict in our own ways.

So did we lock this thread once?  Yes, but it's not "close-minded" as Matt mentioned, but rather it's our way of saying "move along"...  The topic had new reason to be re-opened, but if things die down again and we feel it's time for people to move onto new discussion and forget about what's in the past, then it'll get another lock...  You can't dwell on the past forever, basically.

I do hope everyone enjoys their stay here, enjoys the format, enjoys each other's company, and most of all has as much fun as they possibly can in a completely different setting.

You didn't miss much Matt...  Jedilerious went on about not understanding your "thanks for the fish" tag, etc., and of course ended it with a healthy dose of "git" at the end because I guess he didn't want you over there.

To each their own...  I find it funny so many people would be so willing to let good established members walk away.  Not just the administration, but people who actually are invovled in the conversation end of the forums.  To me, the more good posters who leave, the less tolerable the community there (if you can call it a "community" anymore) becomes.

Oh well, I guess they figure for every good member lost there, they have a new GNT to step right up and post nonsense in their place.

Uhm, thanks to you too Chris.  You don't call "last call" on us, and we appreciate that too...  Best time I've spent in the Star Wars hobby online has been working here.

I never got one or two either Morg, so I dunno what the deal may be there...  And I'm actually one who wouldn't have been terribly bothered by it either, actually, but I am more towards the opinion others are sharing at simply getting no respect over yonder.

The real problem boiled down to the poor handling of the situation between site and members.  A total lack of respect for the people that make advertising even a viable option, and that's just bad form.  It is what it is though, and it apparantly won't change either.
