Toy Reviews / Re: New JD Review: Utapauan Warrior (Utapau Security)

Yeah, I figured that's him but he's tough to make out any details...  Thanks Hunter, I appreciate the comments.

He falls in the Neimodian category so much that he's doomed to pegwarm I'm afraid, should he ship a lot anyway.  My area currently doesn't have a TON of that wave so he's not terribly abundant, but I see probably 2 at about every WM I hit.

Not a lot, but enough that I know he'd be sitting right now if we weren't in such a drought out here.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Anyone Else Bored?
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:14 PM »
I'm not bored, but frustrated...

-Exclusives...  Theyr'e a bitch to find, and their prices have crept beyond bareable basically, so it's just something detrimental to my opinion of the hobby overall.  The TIE Fighter I thought was on the lower end of bad exclusives...  I agree it's a $30 ship, but I also love it so much I want a second one even at $40 though I may not get it.  The figures sting more though, especially when many are things you don't even WANT to open up, like the Lava figures.

-Scalpers...  There's a sharp increase in them due to the film (and subsequently the line's) popularity.  They've become more an issue where I live, whereas they were non-existant a year ago out here and generally weren't much of a problem.  Noticeably more at the Toy Show this Summer though, and that's bothersome.

-Gas prices...  They tend to affect "joe average", and I fall into that category mostly, if not a bit lower with school and all, so that makes fruitless toy runs a bit more frustrating than normal.  The best you can do is condense toy runs into general "shopping needs" too at all times.

-Last 12 repaints...  Not much to get real excited about there.  My opinion hasn't changed since those were announced at SDCC.

-What You Want You Can't Find...  The only recent purchases I've made except Obi-Wan Pilot is buying Royal Guard variants, and SA Clones.  They're all I can find.  I have yet to see a single Evolutions set on the pegs, ever...  I got Anakin thanks only to JediMAC.  I did get the TIE Fighter luckily as an early bday gift though.

The 501st Clone set (the only battlepack I'm wanting now) I haven't been able to find (though thankfully KM's are abundant and closer than any other store).

But never seeing AT-RT Drivers, Red Shocktroopers, Evolutions sets, black pilots, or Green Commanders (or even Red ones), is nothing short of annoying and tie that to the above gas comment and it's even more annoying for me.

So, "frustrated" is my best explanation of my current mood...  Not really bored.  I'm not even 100% bored with the prequals as I am looking forward to the Preview Wookiee's re-release as a commando, and Clones...  I'm pretty well set to move onto classic trilogy stuff though and see if Hasbro can wow me with it, and surprise me with some army builder resculpts I've wanted done for ages.  SA Rebels and SA Scout/Snowtroopers would be high on my list.

Classic trilogy stuff always gets me more antsy for finding it than prequal stuff, even if it's cool ROTS stuff.  I know that finding the Cantina wave gave me a rush I hadn't felt in a LONG time.  :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Sam's Club Exclusives?
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:02 PM »
Sam's Club should get army builder packs on the cheap...  SA Clones in a single box for on the low price side.  Word is they're doing that with another toy line, so I'd think it should happen with Hasbro too.  Help get those variants out there to those who want them in droves.

Yeah, I'm actually a fan of it Dr. P, but that's because it makes good diorama Fodder.  I've been using mine as small anti-personnel towers in dioramas.  Makes a nice EU Rebel weapon, and a paintjob can be all the difference for that thing, trust me.

But it's not in the movie so it is a bit goofy.  A removable helmet would've been preferred on the Clone Pilot over this accessory.

I'm still trying to figure out WTF the black bar thing is that the Pilot comes with.  Looks like a tool I guess, but why, and for what?

To the figure's defense, it looks fine.  I'm not sure why there's unhappiness on how it looks.  It's a nice night camo that miimics Gree (or whoever it is on Kashyyyk) and his green camo paintjob armor mixed with black armor bits.  The paintjob is fine to me.

The price though?  Meh...  Since it's a cardback change from other exclusives I've been trying to keep up with I'm going to skip it.  They should be focusing on getting GOOD figures out to retail in good quantities rather than pissing around with these exclusives that are supposedly taking up their "production capabilities" that Hasbro whined about a short while ago.

If you can't meet demand at retail then stop with the ******* exclusives already!  At least for Clones...  That doesn't make a lick of sense to me, but whatever.

I'm passing.  Nice card or not, it's a changed card, so I don't feel compelled to have it now for a "set", and while I'd gladly take this at the $5 - $7 (maybe even $8) range, and even buy a few extra for a small 4-man team maybe, I'm not even going to get one at the current price.

I'm amazed this is even coming out...  Makes one wonder if the Target one got axed or something.  Would seem odd they both go out, I mean they're not too dissimilar, but whatever.

Add me to the list who is "done".  I'm out...  Enjoy your exclusive StarWarsShop...  You're going to have more of them left over than you planned on I think.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season 2005
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:26 AM »
They're not Hurricanes by the time they reach in where we are, but Katrina's slated to come right up the Ohio Valley and nail Pittsburgh.  The damage they can do here's severe though.  Ivan last year was right after another one, and the 1-2 punch they created was pretty severe.  Ivan pretty much did it all on its own though, and caused massive flooding, landslides, deaths, damage...  I got stranded last year north of the city from about 3:30 to midnight trying to figure out how I'd get at least to my gf's house on backroads since every main route was out of order for the night pretty much.

It was a rough night, and I wasn't home to take care of the house which almost had water on our first floor level...  I was at my gf's which flooded in the basement fortunately, but people down from her had total losses...  They're still cleaning up around here from last year.  It's a mess, and there's a ton of fear about what Katrina could do.  Some are predicting far worse, others less, so who knows.  All I know is I'm not getting stuck out in it.

Yikes, I can't help but watch the Weather Channel religiously right now.  Scary stuff.

And like last year in September, this Hurricane's current path projections have it on a straight heading for Pittsburgh about mid-week.  Obviously it'll diminish at that stage, but last year's hurricane caused heavy damage to our area, and was something I got caught up in so I'm taking those days "off" basically and doing nothing but defending my property here as best I can.  My have to help at the little lady's place too though since she was in a majorly hit area last time and I'd expect nothing short of the same this time.

I hope the people down on the gulf coast are alright...  At the same time I have to prepare for my own potential problems from this.  Scary seeing it coming like this.

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Utapauan Warrior (Utapau Security)
« on: August 29, 2005, 12:55 AM »
If I could've made a top 10 list of army builders I didn't really want from the Star Wars films, I bet I would've had the Utapauan Warrior (Utapau Security) on that list somewhere.

I'm really perplexed at some of Hasbro's figure decisions for the ROTS line like this guy, the Neimodian Warrior, and the Mustafar Sentry.  All army builders, all with positive marks working in their corner, but all figures that I could've lived without in favor of getting something a little more interesting to me personally.  Not to mention that they all are lacking something here and there as well.

Personally, the Utapauan is not one of Hasbro's best efforts in the ROTS line.  He falls prey to many of the same failings the Neimodian Warrior did, though I somehow like that figure a bit more than the Utapau Warrior.  A wonky pose and lacking knee articulation make for a less than fun figure.

Hasbro's taken an obscure and somewhat uninteresting character and made a moderate figure of him basically.  That equals boredom on the pegs, and a figure that could be prone to backing up the system ala the Neimodian.  Not a good thing for collectors at all.

As always, feel free to read my full review on him Right Here, and of course share your thoughts.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Toy Runs affected by Gas Prices?
« on: August 29, 2005, 12:10 AM »
I can't say it hasn't affected me.  I know my trips have decreased, but I'm not sure that it was a conscious decision on my part or just that I'm more busy than I have been for a while.  If I was making as many trips as I had been, it probably would impact me more, but I'm lucky to get one a week in right now, maybe two, and often I try to tie it to other things (home items or whanot...  I know I'm doing some house work right now as far as improvements go and so I try to tie it to a trip to the Lowe's store to save some).

My gf had to pick up her dishwear lay-away at WM the other night so I tied a toy run onto that. :)

I know when I am filling up though I tend to NOT fill all the way.  I put a set ammount in that gets me above 3/4 tank or so.  I can usually put in $17 once I'm around 1/4 tank and that gets me above 3/4 tank.  It's not that I do any better though obviously, it just is a help in my own mind that I'm not putting $25 in to fill it to the brim like I would need to.  I also think I subconciously base my trips on how much gasoline I have.

I know I'm taking advantage of fuel perks as much as I possibly can locally.  When I have them saved up I have a couple gas cans I fill along with my car (which I usuallly run to E before the fill-up).  That way I figure I'm maximizing my dollar.

Oh man, EU's labeled Alderaan as a "colony"?

I'm not a fan of that idea...  Whether stretching the limits of what's possible or not, I always liked the idea of humans being indigenous to multiple planets (with of course colonies existing, but I never looked at Alderaan as a colony before).

I'm just gonna pull the EU Shuffle and plug my ears while singing, "La la la la la la I can't hear you!" and ignore it.   :D

Revenge of the Sith / Re: ROTS - #57 and beyond
« on: August 28, 2005, 04:35 AM »
Hasbro's been wonky with what they say is happening with Clones.  Supposedly ALL this stuff's being produced/pushed now and they're utilizing all their molds to put out all the Clones they can (while keeping plain whites mixed in).

At this point, I think they could pull extra #6's they've got making all-white Clone #6's and put it to a different paintjob (the shocktrooper needs better distribution I know).  But that's my opinion.

I really think all 3 basic Clone grunt sculpts should see all the flavors of Clone trooper at this point though...  And like they did with the 1st Target Clone, they should be utilizing the Clone Wars SA sculpt as much as possible as well.

I'll keep my eyes open Brent.  KM's are abundant around Pitt yet so if I get a 2nd one it's yours.  I was going to consider buying 2 for myself but at $25 and being packed even with that lame Imp set, I'm doubting that's a good idea anyway.

I'll be hitting KM's this week in search of this so I'll let you know should I find anything.

May have to nab 2 501st sets...  I wish the Clone pilot was a variant on some level...  Or at least the as-of-now harder to find Black pilot.  Some unique helmet markings would've worked for me though.

The extra Ani I wind up with will either make for the fodder bin or a hand-off to one of the kids since they dig Anakin in general...  The pilot's my only stickler that I wish was at least different then, but whatever.

If Ani was a Clone Trooper though, this set would be something I think they could restock and sell again and again.

TV-9D9 / Re: Animal Icons- Star Wars Creatures
« on: August 28, 2005, 04:22 AM »
I'll tell ya what, like a nimrod I forgot to watch it every time and missed it basically, but I caught some stuff at the end and this was a REALLY in-depth program.

I was thinking it'd be more animal planet than Star Wars, and really would only glancingly compare SW animal life sparsely to earth animal life.  HOw wrong I was for that little bit I saw.

Of particular interest was them describing Wookiee's and how in-depth LFL went into their backgrounds.  It was addressed how Kashyyyk was (as Lucas wanted it) to be a jungle world...  I felt it kept to EU well, and Lucas's early visions of the planet, but someone brought up that Wookiee's would be hot with all that fur, but the orangatan's (sp) were used as a counter-argument due to their habitats and physiology...  Fascinating.

PLUS it confirmed something I wasn't sure was "true" or not, but that Chewbacca indeed is a runt.  That Lucas explained the Wookiee's to the production people and said that basically fans would be surprised to see Chewbacca is very small for his species, and that true Wookiees are the gargantuans we got with the preview action figure while some are smaller and of course there's in-between I suppose.

That makes Chewie's character a lot more loveable knowing that he's not the bruiser Han pimps him out to be, but more or less just a friend...  It's the REAL Wookiee's you need to watch out for while playing them at holo-chess.

I wish I'd caught the full show now.  That was a valuable resource I felt.  Worth having on DVD.
