Nothing Star Wars, that's for sure...

For me, it's the 1:18 military toy lines...

For $5, the current Series 2 Battle of the Bulge figures from 21st Century Toys give you as many as 6 sets of arms, 2 heads, packs, a gun(s), and helmet/hat for your figure.  The articulation is super articulated with 16 points of articulation!

Comparably, BBI's Elite Force 1:18 figures are exquisitely sculpted with detail I've yet to really see Hasbro match.  Their figures feature as many as 18 points of articulation, and their figures usually come with a pile of extra weapons as well as their normal packs, rifles, and helmets.  You'll get a Bazooka, Mortar, or tri-pod support machine gun...  Lots of stuff for the $4.99-$6.99 pricetag ($6.99 figures have working parachutes and jump gear...  Not bad).

To take my idea of these being the tops in value a step further though...  Let's look at their vehicles.

A 1:18 scale P-38 Lightning Interceptor...  A massive fighter in World War II by all means, is recreated in perfect 1:18 scale.  The plane is made up of TONS of individual parts, and put together by hand.  There's a full cockpit interior down to every tiny detail including footpedals and a control stick, painted instrumentation, etc...  The cockpit glass opens EXACTLY as the real plane would, in multiple sections.  The landing gear open, lock, and roll, and are comprised of many individual parts, ther painting and decaling are incredibly accurate, and again it's PERFECT 1:18 scale.

You get that for $40-$50 depending if you find it in a store or online.  I got mine for $40 at TRU.  And there's a number of paintjobs for ANY given fighter too, not just one to pick from.  Everything from D-Day to the Pacific Theater can be found....  AND you get a unique pilot with super articulation that is as good (or even better than) the basic carded figures.  I mean, holy ****.

And, to add to that...  21st Cent. Toys is A) a private, small, independant toy company with highly limited capital as compared to Hasbro, B) pay licensing fees on any number of items...  Contrary to popular belief among SW collectors who love to defend Hasbro, other toy companies do pay out the whazoo for licenses, and sometimes pay multiples licenses on one toy they make...  While it's not in the millions, it adds up and for small private toy companies it is just as damaging financially to them in relative terms.  Imagine if you had to pay for the Humvee title, or the Patton Family to use his likeness?  And now imagine if those fees go into the 10's of thousands of dollars sometimes.  And anything from noseart on a fighter to a pilot's name has to be paid out...  Yes, this **** costs money too and Hasbro all-too-often hides behind the license fee IMO.

21st's also got to answer to people who demand accuracy, and are as frustrated as Hasbro can be with Lucasfilm wanting them to go back and revisit something again and again...  Other comapnies deal with the same problems, if not worse problems since 21st doesn't have the production capabilities and such that Hasbro does, and yet they still put out a better product year in and year out despite their obstacles they face.  To me, the X-Treme Detail and Elite Force 1:18 scale lines are worth every penny.

The shark mouth is painted on the ship and is not a decal. Some were wondering.

I thought it was a shark, too, until I heard somewhere that it's supposed to be a rancor.

Think it was mentioned on the CW: V2 DVD.

Kind of a cool idea, I thought.

I've heard that too, that it was a Rancor not a shark...  I think people just think shark automatically since it's an homage to shark's mouth paintjobs on P-40 fighters from World War II...  I've been calling it the sharkmouth paintjob too out of habit.

It's very cool, despite my lack of appreciation for the ship...  The paintjob's fantastic.  It kind of makes me hope for another A-Wing EU repaint since that's one of my more favored ships from the line.  Something a bit more elaborate like this Gunship would be nice.

I think that, if it were $30, I'd probably bite on it...  It'd make a nice set for that price.  $20 would be better though, but $30's not terrible either.  $60 just is hard to take for me on anything.  I can get some pretty complex things for $60...  So a nice, but overall relatively simple stand for figures is tough to bite on.   :-\

I have6 with a bit more coming to me.  I'm not at my goal yet, but I'm getting there.  Can't wait.  These are simply some of the best work Hasbro's ever done.

Fan Club still blows.

Jeff's endorsement is strong though, obviously.  Look at that surge...

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Casting Questions
« on: May 2, 2006, 04:43 AM »
More or less the castin' craft stuff is just low quality.  I've not used it a lot, just some, and the cured casts are not on par with higher quality casting materials.  Generally when something's cheaper, the quality is cheaper as the end result.

As far as resin, it is more or less liquid plastic...  Resins aren't plastics, they're not the same materials, dont' share the same properties, etc...  The plastic Hasbro uses are injection molding plastics that start as little pellets that are heated, and shot into steel molds.  Different bird, different chemical properties and things...  Just different.

But resins are very similar to plastics.  Sometimes referred to as plastics but they are different in some ways too...  Easier to work with in small doses is one of their major differences...  I have had some experience working in plastics based industry and friends in the broader industry as well as in toys, and there are differences and such.

It should be noted too, resin is a harmful chemical...  make no mistake.  I know people who've handled and worked with resin all their lives.  It's not something to just tink with lightly.  Use safety stuff.  I suggest working with surgical gloves when you work with it...  When sanding resin items, they create REALLY fine dust particles that are incredibly harmful too...  Generally it's people working in really large doses of this stuff over years and stuff, but still be cautious.  I've heard of resins being the cause of long-term health issues because of mishandling, routine skin contact, etc...

Star Wars Dioramas and Displays / Re: Custom decals?

Depends what all you're on the hunt for Brent...

Erik Stormtrooper's site there has shoulder and helmet emblems and such.  I have his stuff saved because it's great.  It'd be nice if someone handy dandy with drawing and such would do up new ones like those.  EU logos and stuff.

Anyway, share anything you come up with that you're able to find Brent...  May be helpful to everyone.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Styrene Sheets
« on: May 2, 2006, 04:31 AM »
What I do is generally buy my shapes at hobby stores...  I look elsewhere for sheet though.  Like I said, price a house for sale sign at WM.  Check the clearance aisles even.  I got two nice sized signs on the cheapy cheap just the other day.  $1 each isn't bad at all, and this is fairly thick stuff too compared to the sheets I can get at HTUSA out here.  Still thin enough to score cut it, but much thicker than the 8x10 sheets I see at the hobby stores for certain.

For the detailed bits though I go to the hobby store...  It's just easier for me, and often I don't need a LOT of one shape I've found.  Some I could but eh, I deal.

I like the Saga figure too...  But at the same time, I agree that the hands need updating, the articulation can be better (ball/socket knees and elbows), the paint was weak on every one I saw (tons of flaws), the hood's meh...

It's not a bad figure, it just has flaws and when compared with ROTS figures, it can be updated.

What I'd do is give a softgoods gauze-ish type material for the vest with like an elastic band sewin in the waist part.  You could remove it and have Luke as he appeared when he left Endor...  It'd be cool if they could figure out a heat/cold decal to put on his chest that shows the open grey flap of his shirt too.  Like you put cold on it and it shows grey for Death Star dueling. :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: ROTS Recent Purchases

JTA set tonight for the low low price of $28 and change...  I feel dumb for not being able to do the math quickly but I figured it came to $7-ish a figure (not counting the Anakin figure in there at all) and I was willing to bite on it at that...  Pricey but 3 Tact. Ops Clones and Pilot are worth it to me, plus considering the current figures out on pegs these things look like VOTC in terms of quality.  ::)

Yeah it's extended...  Put out a wants for one of these sets on our classifieds boards and someone may have one for you Mitsu.

I'd like another Chewie but I'm not too concerned about it.

Good set but one's enough for me I think.

Smyth dove to draw the penalty

Yeah that was about as blatant a dive as one could imagine...  I thought the penalty was called when he fell behind the net though, not the dive in front.  I thought the arm went up when he had his skates taken from under him behind the net but I don't know now.

Same with the kicked goal...  I don't think it was but I didn't see it replayed a lot, just a couple times, so I could just as easily be wrong.  It just looked from what I saw like the puck wasn't even near his skate when he was being driven into the net...

Either way though it was a really exciting game.  Flip flopped back and forth a couple times.  Fun to watch for sure.

I've been watching the game...  I'm not so sure on that goal HoloE, I think that was the right call myself...  The guy's drug into the net by Lidstrom and I couldn't see the puck anywhere near his skate, so I don't know.  I'm curious to see it later though.

Dale I could almost hear you coming in...

Good game...  The action this playoff has been so superior to years past.  I think of the games today compared to the debacle in '93 when I was mother f'n the TV nightly because of the clutch & grab bs the Islanders did to the Pens...

I'm loving OLN too, it just needs to be said.  I've been really happy with them all season and the playoff coverage is great.
