Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Vintage OTC Figures
« on: June 30, 2004, 12:39 AM »
The angle cuts on some of the VOTC figures are disappointing.

So much for "Ultimate" versions...  Close, but not quite.

Han's great though, and Yoda's about as good as Yoda can get I think...

Lando's REALLY good except those elbow joints...  Ball/sockets are hidden better and allow a greater range of motion so that's a slight disappointment on him.  The cape I can stomach because of having extras of the POTJ to swap with.

Leia I'm ok with except she appears to have the least articulation of all the figures I think, save perhaps Yoda.

Obi's legs are my biggest gripe...  Soft-goods skirt and his knees don't bend?  WTF is the deal there?  His odd looking arms would be a close second, but I can stand them.  The robe's puffy but I plan on seam-ripping a Pilot Obi robe and using it as a pattern to make my own Jedi robes from the material they used on Total Control Mace.

If you guys didn't get Mace, but have the opportunity to check one out, I highly recommend just checking out how great the softgoods are on it.  Simply perfect!

Luke...  I'm torn.  Part of me thinks the idea/concept is interesting, and with how many POTF2 ones of him there are, and the fact you can make an almost "perfect" Luke with thse bits and pieces...  I dunno, I kind of like this one then.  The head's a little off, the robe's puffy, but a removable belt is COOL, and the fact he may have the best "shirtless" custom fodder torso ever is intriguing...  I'm anxious to see how he looks without the cloak because he could be useless if his sculpt underneath is bad.

R2-D2, unless he's swiss-army R2, isn't going to be great...  Unless this figure can open at damn near every panel with every known gadget he had, and has articulated ankles, retractable 3rd leg, etc., etc., etc...  I just don't see this being a great one.

3PO...  Same as above, but articulatin replaces the other stuff, and for some reason I'm thinking he's just going to pop apart to make an accurate "pull-apart" 3-PO...  Call me crazy I guess.  Or perhaps cynical is more the term.

Boba Fett...  Short of possibly the Stormtrooper, THIS is the figure that's going to be in demand I think.  Vader a maybe close 3rd, but Fett's going to dominate demand IMO.  They'd better not cut corners on this guy.  I want a side-arm, ROTJ paintjob, softgoods cape and wookiescalps, working holster, accurate blaster (if it pulled apart at the barrel, I'd simply worship this figure), and full use of ball/socket joints.  Hasbro could even go the extra mile and give the double-jointed torso to Fett and it'd look totally cool.  Here's to hoping.

Stormie...  Army builder = selling well, at any price.  I just hope he's not off-kilter as far as height goes next to the CT Stormie.  I'm updating all my CT Stormies with a hand/blaster kit and I'll happily line them up with these new guys.  The new guys will be the dominant ones in any diorama though, and I'd happily buy 100+ more of them if they look  good with the CT figure.

Vader...  The hottest with collectors behind Fett I think, because I know people who won't bother with VOTC who will still buy this and the last 2 figures just because.  Vader's chain's awkward, and he seemingly had some articulation skimming too if I recall.  Not total ball/socket joints!?   >:(  Vader with the double-jointed torso would've rocked too...  What's the big deal?  I'd have liked it.

Hell, Durge got the Double-jointed torso, yet some of these guys aren't?  Blah!  And Durge ranks, as weird as it sounds, as the #2 greatest Star Wars figure behind the CW Clone to me.  Durge is so heavily articulated it boggles the mind.  Makes me wish I was a kid again because I'd have Durge whipping the bejesus out of G.I. Joes as Cobra's newest "secret weapon" or merc.

OOOOOOH Yes...   I believe my heart just skipped a beat.

If this is a film just for kids, I'll be kinda bummed, but I'm hoping for somethign with some slick humor in it like Shrek or Toy Story.

Lego's the only thing I can think of where EVERYTHING hits.

BBI Elite Force 1:18 is pretty good about distribution though, as was 21st Century when they were with TRU.  Now that they're with Wal-Mart, their distribution is spotty at best...  I know I've never seen the Spitfire or P-40's here and they were 2 planes I actually wanted.

Never seen Mustang repaints either, or Messers...  Last I saw those was at TRU in the first release.

WM's been a real disappintment for 21st 1:18 product IMO.  Overordering at some stores, and simply never giving others any new product.  21st's loss of their deal with TRU was a big blow to them.  THey should've simply gone to doing allied forces and milked that contract as long as they could've...  Market German stuff via Etailers and be done with it...

Hell, it'd at least be SOMETHING in stores.  I think that contract was nullified more because of poor sales of large-ticket items like the planes than anything else.

I have....

-Atari2600
-NES (The one with the robot too!  Though we never used that POS)
-SNES
-N64
-Gamecube
-X-Box

and my PC which probably gets more use than any of the abve, save the NES which we had TONS f games for.

Consoles are fun but PC won't ever be replaced IMO.  It'll only absorb consoles.

Yeah, I wanna get some of those, but the $7.99 tag's scaring me off.  May try ordering a case assortment instead since they came to TRU retail then.

Wanna nab some Dragn figures on sale too...

Toy Reviews / Re: VOTC Han Solo (large(ish) pics)
« on: June 27, 2004, 02:16 AM »
Impressive there my friend, thanks for sharing images Vator...

This Han should see the light of date at basic retail I believe...  You can do anything.  Hell I'd even like a "Death Star" version with a removable Stormie belt and stormie blaster or something.

Luke, even with the goofy cloth robe, would be cool to do the same with.

I'm really anxious to see the articulation on Luke actually...  Doublejointed torso was word on him, and thus the reason for the robe.  I still don't get WHY they would give him that torso, but whatever.

Anyway, a couple ?'s...  Or one anyway.

1) Is Han substantially shorter than the CT STormie?  Very curious if he is, and then what may be of the VOTC Stormie and how he'll stack up against the CT.

Nice price ont hat Vator, good for you man...

I'm personally awaiting these as per usual...  Find it at the store, unless my buddy Paul gets a case and has extras, haha.

I gotta ask you some ?'s in your review about overall body construction and height (looks short with that stormie :( ).

Nice images...

Joe Defender / Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread

I believe the 2 companies I've been thinking of are one in the same and there's really only a single company making Joe parts casts.

At least that's someone though. :)  Good stuff too.  They did have a Wild Weasel helmet hollowed out, I just missed it.  Cast in a lovely resin too BTW.

Have to do some ordering from them sometime when I get some scratch...

Even though I can safely say I'd have as many complaints about this line as I do Star Wars, I think I'd likely get into G.I. Joe collecting.

I'd of course be heavy into their customizing as well...

LOTR is a close second in getting my vote though, only because they have a diverse line already and have seemingly committed to the long haul.

G.I. Joe I would conosider a blanket "military" line I'd collect though, so I'd buy up BBI and 21st Cent. Figures (like I do now) to mix in.  :)  Kinda cheap cop-out to get 2 choices in 1, I know.

Nonetheless, I'm sure I'd have a pretty extensive Joe collection (vintage ARAH 82-89 at the latest) and customs going right about now.  Joe was THE Toy Line when I was a kid...  Not Star Wars.

Good work Famine...

First, you're not truly "free" yet.  I personally found that, while graduating high school was great for me at the time, turning 21 actually was my truest moment of freedom.  The day I realized the world was a pretty wide open place.

You've got 3 years of a goofy "limbo" to go through, but it's a hell of a lot better than the years in high school.  :)

Second, make sure you enjoy your college years and don't goof off.  Have fun during them, but make your best effort too.  You'll appreciate the growth later.

And third, don't drink too much and develope a horrendous beer gut.  It's a very common side-effect of graduating high school that can take upwards of 12 years to develope, but it can happen!

Other Toy Lines / Re: Articulation: How Do You Feel About It?
« on: June 26, 2004, 12:34 AM »
Articulation's part of toys, and being that toys are what I want to collect I say the more the better GENERALLY.  The Marvel line I'm familiar with enough, but I generally don't collect them.

This figure, to me, is close to perfection...  Hasbro's SA Clone or Durge MAYBE best this though, with their VERY excellent use of Ball/socket joints.  Unfortunately where 21st excels Hasbro doesn't, and where Hasbro excels 21st doeosn't.

To me, the SW line's severely lacking in this single area more than any other.  Rubbery accessories are dealt with, absurd distribution's a fact of life, oversaturation's been with us since vintage days.  Articulation is an area they just are reluctant to tread.

21st's figures are incredibly poseable (as are BBI's) and look AMAZING displayed.  Truly impressive little pieces of plastic, and even with pre-posed interchangeable arms they really add a dynamic there for "static pose" collectors.

Bottom line though, articulation is the #1 area that makes a toy, and more focused an action figure, a truly fun item to play with.  The popularity of poseable toy lines should be a guide for all toy lines...  G.I. Joe, Marvel, LOTR, Stikfas (and similar), BBI Elite Force, 12" military lines, etc...

Lots to learn from there.  I'd love to see Hasbro wind up doing figures in their SW line as well as the SA Clone or Deluxe Durge were (or VOTC's).  Incredible sculpting, articulation, and deco all in one.  Keep salt shaker senators and the like, but go all-out on the rest.

I'd even like a more dramatically posed side-line alongside the poseable basic line at the same time.  Like Unleashed, but in more "realistic" poses and in the same 3.75" scale.  A 3.75" Han running (circa DS Escape) looks a LOT more fun for specific dioramas when you've got VOTC Han to pose however you want and play with.

Remember our policy guys.

Vator doesn't believe it, he doesn't support it...  Leave it at that, but I would rather not see this get any worse than it has (though I see it is "escalating" already).

Just remember that you don't have to agree on this, but it's not something we're wanting to turn into another political debate with points and counterpoints that aren't doing anything but pissing both sides off.
